Michela Griffo, Mother, 1982
Oil and graphite on canvas
72 × 54 inches
These paintings are what remains from Griffo’s The Family series, most of which she destroyed in the late ’80s during a drunken rage prior to a second stay at rehab. A fourth was left unfinished prior to her departure for her first rehab in 1984, and has only recently been completed. Like all of her paintings, they are formally governed by two elements symbolizing the dichotomy she interprets: a painted fantasy and a reality depicted in graphite. They combine characters from modern and traditional fairy tales with cropped and masterfully rendered figures from Albrecht Dürer engravings to illuminate the dynamics of abuse. In Mother, we see a partially drawn figure of Pain from Dürer’s Hercules at the Crossroads, where the demi-god must choose between Pleasure and Pain, in the act of striking down ornate pillars; the Mickey Mouse on the room’s wallpaper witnesses the scene in shock.

"Overcoming Poison." Introduction to the Garuda Upanishad, "the Exploration of the Mysteries of the Antidote to Poison."
Tumblr media
The Garuda Upanishad was first published in 1883 by S. Subrahmanya in Telugu language in Chennai, India and then in 1885 in Albrecht Weber. In 1891, G. A. Jacob published it in his Eleven Atharvana Upanishads. Paul Deussen partially translated it into German and published it in 1897.
It is numbered 89 of 108.
Garuda is the eagle vehicle of the god Vishnu "the all pervasive" who is seated on the three points of the body the mind and the intellect signified by the wings and tail of the great bird. Garuda is known as a fierce no bones about it predator of the wicked and is often seen carrying Krishna as well.
He is not known for his good temper.
Like the other animal shaped deities he is not worshipped as the god of eagles or eagle god, but an eagle shaped god which is not the same. His power is said to remove poison, the influences of the wicked the same way an eagle rids the ground of a mouse or rat:
Om ! O Devas, may we hear with our ears what is auspicious; May we see with our eyes what is auspicious, O ye worthy of worship !
May we enjoy the term of life allotted by the Devas, Praising them with our body and limbs steady ! May the glorious Indra bless us !
May the all-knowing Sun bless us ! May Garuda, the thunderbolt for evil, bless us !
May Brihaspati the god of prayers grant us well-being !
Om ! Let there be Peace in me ! Let there be Peace in my environment ! Let there be Peace in the forces that act on me ! Om! That (world) is a complete whole.
This (world) too is a complete whole. From the complete whole only, the (other) complete whole rose. Even after removing the complete whole from the (other) complete whole, still the complete whole remains unaltered and undisturbed. Om Shanti! Shanti! Shanti!
I will preach the Brahman – science. Brahman taught it to Narada, Narada (the root of the sugarcane) to Brhatsena (great kindness), Brhatsena to Indra (intellect), Indra to Bharadvaja, (the skylark) Bharadvaja to his pupils who desired to preserve their life.
(He taught them the science) which achieves this, which achieves good, removes poison, destroys poison, overcomes poison and annihilates poison: “Struck is the poison, annihilated is the poison, destroyed is the poison; it is struck by Intra’s thunder-bolt, Svaha!
May it originate from snakes, from vipers, from scorpions, from cankers, from salamanders, from amphibious animals or from rats”.
Garuda, "the one who is endowed with wings" is the antidote for poison, or hatred. Eagles and other birds of prey are known for their ability to focus, to watch and wait and then break and attack. We are supposed to tone the intellect till it can work like it has an eagle's focus.
An eagle would not have allowed the world to become a place of poison. He would have dive bombed on its causes and told the story later, of his victories. Now we are discussing ways to contain conflicts that are necessary to cure the world of the poison sacks it allowed to fill and flood our lives.
We call the conditions before and after our lives changed a few years ago, "complex", let them languish, and now they are even more "complex" than before. We say we don't want escalations, we listen to every complainer and braggart, we hope democracy can withstand us and we discuss all the contingencies, but do we focus and strike? No we do not.
The Upanishad is short, a meager few verses, and shall conclude shortly.

(( I’m going to assume the films, correct? I can’t really RP as a toyline ^^; /hj
For real though, I think some characters from the various movies (most likely movies in the 2000s onward) are alright. They aren’t really bad, aren’t really good...just mediocre. They’re made to be watched by little girls, mostly. However, there are some interesting characters that I like, mainly the villains and animal characters. Main ones are kinda ‘eh’ cause it’s Barbie basically self-inserting herself XD...  (I stopped at Princess Power ngl, but if there’s more down the line for more modern Barbie films, I’ll list em too.) Anyways, the characters that I’d RP most are:
The Nutcracker: Mouse King, Pim
Rapunzel: Penelope, Hugo, Gothel, Otto
Swan Lake: Fairy Queen, Rothbart, Lila, Erasmus
Fairytopia/Mermadia/Magic of the Rainbow: Laverna, Topaz, Ruby
Magic of Pegasus: Wenlock, Brietta
The 12 Dancing Princesses: Prince Derek, Duchess Rowena
Island Princess: Sagi, Ro/Princess Rosella, Prince Antonio
The Diamond Castle: Lydia
The Three Musketeers: Corinne, Aramina, Miette, Phillipe
A Mermaid Tale: Princess Merliah, Break
A Fashion Fairytale: Marie-Alecia, Millicent, Jacqueline, Glimmer/Shimmer/Shyne
Princess Charm School: Dame Devin, Alexandra Privet, Delancy Devin
The Princess & The Popstar: Seymour Crider
The Pink Shoes (which is basically swan lake all over again i guess??): Snow Queen, Hilarion, Prince Albrecht, Hailey, Rothbart
The Secret Door: Alexa, Princess Malucia, Grodlin
Princess Power: Baron von Ravendale, Princess Kara

Forgive my ignorance but who's the Doll Maker? Are they another JBM villain?
Yep! My OC, Albrecht Fuchs, is the Doll Maker. He was a former classmate/friend of Schneep’s who has a fascination with kidnapping people, cutting all of the imperfections out of them and turning them into his “dolls”. He sells body parts on the black market and runs a forum on the Deep Web to lure in new “patients” – helped along by his partner, Smiley, who belongs to my friend @bing-iplier. They’re quite the pair XD
Jackieboy found him on the Deep Web and they’ve been playing a long game of cat-and-mouse ever since. Sometimes it’s unclear who’s the cat and who’s the mouse! Dolly’s captured Jackie and tried to “doll him up” on multiple occasions. Schneep, Silver Shepherd and Jameson have been tortured by him too.

Better Together
Like any well-functioning society, cells have their own recycling centres, known as lysosomes. These little compartments are packed with harsh chemicals that break down unwanted large molecules into smaller components that can then be transported elsewhere in the cell and turned back into useful new materials. However, little is known about the components of lysosomes themselves, or how molecules are transported in and out of them. Researchers have now genetically engineered mice that lack a protein known to be important for lysosome transportation, called MFSD1 (stained green in this image of a mouse cell). These animals develop liver damage and cancer later in life, highlighting the importance of functioning lysosomes for health. MFSD1 is found specifically in lysosomes (stained red) and works together with another molecule called GLMP. By figuring out how these two proteins buddy up, researchers hope to understand more about liver disease and even discover new treatments.

Germany bans unvaccinated from public transport and warns of bleak Christmas
Tumblr media
Germany has agreed a series of tougher Covid-19 measures which stipulate that only those who have been vaccinated, test negative or have recovered from the virus can use public transport or go in to work from next week.
Although not as severe as the lockdown rules imposed this week by the country’s neighbours Austria and the Czech Republic, the latest restrictions come after alarming warnings that Germany is facing a “horrible Christmas” as infection rates surge.
The German parliament passed the new measures on Thursday. There is growing exasperation from officials that one-third of the adult population remains unvaccinated.
Chancellor Angela Merkel will take part in a video conference on Thursday afternoon with the 16 German state premiers to discuss how else to combat a sharp surge in coronavirus infections in the last two weeks that threatens to overwhelm hospitals, with more than 50,000 new infections being reported every day – a 10-fold increase from a few weeks ago.
“We are facing a serious emergency situation,” said Lothar Wieler, the head of the Robert Koch Institute, which monitors public health in Germany.
“We’re looking at a horrible Christmas break if we don’t act now. We’ve never been as worried as we are right now. The outlook is bleak, extremely bleak. Anyone who can’t see how serious it is is making a big mistake.”
The normally cautious and mild-mannered Mr Wieler said that the government had made mistakes by reopening too much of the economy too soon after an earlier lockdown in the spring, and that the country’s vaccination rate of around 67 per cent was simply too low to slow the spread of the virus.
“We’ve got to stop giving those who are unvaccinated chances to avoid getting it with tests,” he said, adding that he wants to see pharmacies joining the ranks of those who are vaccinating people.
“Every man and every mouse who can inject a shot should be vaccinating people now. Otherwise we’re never going to get on top of this.”
Saxony’s state premier Michael Kretschmer avoided the word “lockdown” in a speech to the state assembly on Thursday morning, but called for “tough and clear wave-breaker” restrictions in his state for the next two to three weeks as the seven-day incidence level surged to 761 – the highest level in Germany and double the national average of 336.
“If we want to break this wave, we’re not going to achieve that by only talking to those who haven’t been vaccinated,” said Kretschmer. “We’re going to have to take a big leap. It’s a bitter experience but it’s probably our only hope.”
Michael Albrecht, the hospital coordinator in Saxony, which has Germany’s lowest vaccination rate (below 60 per cent), said: “We need a complete lockdown for the next 14 days.”
Meanwhile in Hungary, Gergely Gulyas, the chief of staff of prime minister Viktor Orban, announced on Thursday that new measures would be introduced across the country. Booster vaccines against Covid-19 are to be made mandatory for all healthcare workers, and the wearing of masks in most indoor areas will be compulsory from Saturday.
Mr Gulyas told a government briefing that only vaccines could provide protection against the coronavirus. Hungary reported 10,767 new Covid-19 infections on Thursday, its highest daily total since the end of March.
In Slovakia, people who have not received a vaccine will be banned from non-essential stores and shopping malls from Monday, and will not be allowed to attend public gatherings. In addition, they will have to submit twice-weekly tests in order to attend work. In the hardest-hit parts of the country, restaurants and gyms will be closed.
The country’s prime minister, Eduard Heger, called the measures “a lockdown for the unvaccinated”, saying that they were likely to continue for three weeks but that the government would “react promptly” if it became clear that the restrictions were not having the desired effect.

Der Homeostat by Albrecht Hauenschild (1956) at the Technical University in Vienna. Hauenschild’s father owned a plastics factory which was used to great effect in this recreation of Ross Ashby’s Homeostat which Ashby himself saw and admired. “He added two demonstration devices. One is a primitive glass screen on which two spots of light are moved in accordance with the four variables. There is a setting where the two spots of light behave like cat and mouse (the cat tries to catch the mouse; the mouse tries to escape). At another setting the spots behave like two boxers, attacking each other again and again. The second demonstration device is a stylized human face, where the four variables control the positions of the corners of the mouth, the eyebrows, and the eyes. This produces a play of features. Such demonstrations give a better idea of how the abstract concept of homeostasis produces dynamic effects.” from Beyond Art: A Third Culture, Peter Weibel (ed.)

Extinction Rebellion - Time against Life
Tumblr media
Extinction Rebellion is a global environmental movement with the stated aim of using nonviolent civil disobedience to compel government action to avoid tipping points in the climate system, biodiversity loss, and the risk of social and ecological collapse. Extinction Rebellion - Time against Life https://youtu.be/XMzTWwTw_kQ Extinction Rebellion is an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimize the risk of social collapse. Our world is in crisis. Life itself is under threat. Yet every crisis contains the possibility of transformation. Across the world, heralded by the young, people are waking up and coming together.
Tumblr media
Symbol-of-Time We hear history calling to us from the future. We catch glimpses of a new world of love, respect and regeneration, where we have restored the intricate web of all life. It’s a future that’s inside us all – located in the fierce love we carry for our children, in our urge to help a stranger in distress, in our wish to forgive, even when that seems too much to ask.  And so we rebel for this, calling in joy, creativity and beauty. We rise in the name of truth and withdraw our consent for ecocide, oppression and patriarchy. We rise up for a world where power is shared for regeneration, repair and reconciliation. We rise for love in its ultimate wisdom. Our vision stretches beyond our own lifespan, to a horizon dedicated to future generations and the restoration of our planet’s integrity. Together, our rebellion is the gift this world needs. We are XR and you are us.  https://rebellion.earth/ https://www.instagram.com/p/B3PwZ73HHCC/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link At the core of Extinction Rebellion’s philosophy is nonviolent civil disobedience. We promote civil disobedience and rebellion because we think it is necessary- we are asking people to find their courage and to collectively do what is necessary to bring about change. We aren’t focussed on traditional systems like petitions or writing to our MPs and more likely to take risks (e.g. arrest / jail time). We don’t want or need everyone to get arrested – for some this is not a good idea – but we do want everyone involved to support civil disobedience as a tool. We are promoting mass “above the ground” civil disobedience – in full public view. This means economic disruption to shake the current political system and civil disruption to raise awareness. We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience that this causes.
Tumblr media
We can't eat money We have made some decisions about security and our interactions with the police. We have made a strategic decision to communicate with the police about what we are doing when we believe that is more likely to enable things to go well (which we can’t always be sure of). Except for the case where a small group is trying to do a specific action that needs the element of surprise, we generally don’t try to be secure in our communications about plans. We expect that we have been infiltrated by those without our best interests at heart and suggest people bear this in mind. We are about political change, not personal change (though we welcome the latter). We are completely nonviolent, our actions are done in full public view and we take responsibility for them. We have an Action Consensus which outlines how we work together on actions. https://rebellion.global/ https://www.instagram.com/p/B3T3Qndniqo/?utm_source=ig_web_options_share_sheet We organise in small, autonomous groups distributed around the world. These groups are connected in a complex web that is constantly evolving as we grow and learn. We are working to build a movement that is participatory, decentralised, and inclusive. The structure aims to empower anybody to act as part of XR, so long as they agree to follow our ten core principles (see ‘Our principles and values’ section below). You can read a summary of our Self-Organising System (or XR Constitution) for more information. You can also read the full constitution. We are seeking a balance between being able to act quickly in response to fast-changing situations and being able to integrate the collective wisdom of multiple perspectives when needed.

Use your browser’s Back button to retrace your steps. https://www.designweek.co.uk/issues/15-21-april-2019/how-extinction-rebellion-protest-graphics/ Extinction Rebellion: A Call for Direct Action In response to the global climate crisis, Extinction Rebellion has emerged as a direct action movement. Originally a UK based initiative, Extinction Rebellion began on 31st October 2018 when a small group of individuals gathered together on Parliament Square in London to make a ‘Declaration of Rebellion’ against the UK Government. Anticipating only a couple of hundred people to attend, organizers were surprised by the 1500 that gathered to peacefully protest for the climate crisis. Encouraged by the show of solidarity, the movement quickly gained momentum with protests springing up all throughout the UK. In the weeks that followed, a group of 6000 converged to block five major bridges across the Thames river whilst others superglued themselves to the gates of Buckingham Palace to read letters to the Queen. Naturally, these protests generated huge national and international publicity, with thousands of people around the world finding Extinction Rebellion’s message to be resonant. There are now groups forming in countries far and wide, with people of all nations banding together to take action while we still have a chance. At Synergetic Press, we want to encourage this movement. Here are links to key talks and networks to help you get involved. https://www.synergeticpress.com/extinction-rebellion-rebel-for-life/

    Week 3
The story of Adam and Eve in the bible has always been one of my favorites since I was little. I think this piece of art by Albrecht Dürer is an amazing representation of how truly meaningful this piece is. An engraving was made in 1504 and then a pair of oil on panel paintings were completed in 1507. I find it very unique that the author chose to display his name in the sign held by the parrot in the tree. This is the first piece of art where I have seen an artist mark their work in another way besides just signing in the corner. I like that he chose this as a way to be different and unique, besides the uniqueness of the art itself.
The two figures, Adam and Eve, stand in a dark forest, which is not necessarily how the bible perceives the Garden of Eden. In the bible, the garden is described as “the most beautiful land on Earth”, with many fruit trees and animals. The innovative garden painted by Dürer is dark and said to be German.
The two figures appear to be naked and looking at each other while facing towards us. The man is very muscular while the women is not as much. They are both shifting their weight to one side balancing on one leg, looking as if they could move at any time. Adam and Eve are of very light complexion in contrast with the dark background they are in front of.
I chose this piece of work, because I found it interesting that the artist chose to perceive the Garden of Eden in a different way than what was explained in the book of Genesis in the bible. When I think of the Renaissance era I think of many religious paintings that would be seen in a church. This painting is one I could see hanging in a church, waiting for someone to unlock its deeper meaning. I notice there are many animals depicted in the backdrop of the piece. An elk, ox, cat, rabbit, mouse, goat and a parrot. Parrots were colorful birds and found that they were collector’s items in Germany and their call sounded to them of “Hail Mary”, which is another Christian relation. The cat seems to not have trouble with the mouse and the goat is standing way off in the distance, still on the mountain. I see this as Dürer setting this painting in the perfect moment in the dark and dreary forest.

Note
Hey! The question just blowed my mind; what do you think witch animals would some napola characters be?
Albrecht: Deer. Strong, noble, and pure, but a vehement pacificst.
Friedrich: Labrador Retriever. Loyal to a fault, enthusiastic, energetic, and willing to go out and do things others aren’t.
Justus: Vulture/Peacock.
Vulture: Circles around others who are already weak and attacks in search for sustenance and enjoyment.
Peacock: Walks around with a sense of arrogance, showing off to attempt to gain the attention and affection of others (whether it be his superiors, which I assume, or perhaps the boys). Also will never shut the hell up.
Chrisoph: A mouse. Quiet, hard working, keeps his head down, but still social. Will dart away from danger.
Siegfried: Butterfly. Weakest and most fragile among all of them, but sacrifices himself for the sake of others, as butterflies die for the predator to know not to eat the rest.
Hefe: Pigeon. Meek, loves food, not physically gifted, yet somehow survives because of other people’s actions.
Tjaden: Chipmunk. Swift, social, and cute, but easily startled.
