I've read fics about SQH worrying about becoming second husband/wife, about MBJ proposing and SQH not realizing and thinking he is going to marry someone else, about MBJ promoting him without telling him until MBJ gives him the ultimate promotion and declares SQH his "queen" (also without telling SQH 😂) and I also saw one fic (although only read the first chapter) in which MBJ is looking for a spouse (not SQH) after they tried and failed at being together and many at Court are upset is not SQH(?). The point is I've seen many marriage fics, and while on them it takes a while for them to get married because of misunderstandings/miscommunication, usually SQH is on board once the misunderstanding/miscommunication is cleared. I don't think I've seen one where instead of SQH worrying about whether MBJ will propose and being envious of SQQ/LBH, SQH is instead dismissive of marriage and not wanting to ever get married himself if asked about.

I've seen post making fun of MBJ being courting SQH by beating him three times a day and how actually in the demon realm his romance is THE Romance ™ and not LBH's, because from an outsider demonic perspective it seemed that SQH kept playing hard to get and MBJ was willing to keep in trying. But, what if the misunderstandings/miscommunication were cleared and SQH is NOT on board. Like, even if you write him as already aware that he is in love with MBJ (and I like it more if he either doesn't see MBJ in that light yet or he isn't aware his feelings have turned romantic) and being on board on becoming lovers, I would love for him to just for him to hem and haw and distracting MBJ or avoiding the subject, because he doesn't want to get married. Because marriage kills romance. Marriage is the death of love, AND THEY JUST FOUND OUT THEY ARE IN REQUITED LOVE, WHY RUINED BY GETTING MARRIED!? And him trying to convince MBJ that it is better that way, he already promised to follow MBJ for all his life, why do they need to get married?

And now MBJ actually has to try and convince SQH that marriage is good. Until either one of the is convinced they are fine with or without being married.

Or you know, maybe there is no marriage proposal and MBJ's council or CQM are the ones telling Moshang they should get married, because of politics, and both MBJ amd SQH don't have a good opinion of marriage.

Shen Yuan and Shang Qinghua: Kinda sad, but pretty mundane backstories

Gonna gush and ramble about a daydream scenario for two of my f/o's to have my s/i crush on them at the same time so I have it somewhere to flesh it out more

So Qiu and Cove

Cove's bday is know, Qiu's isn't. But that won't stop me because we know Baxter's ages nyahahaha. If Baxter is 3 years older than Qiu and 1 year older than Cove, then that means 2 years difference between Cove and Qiu. Meaning I can have my s/i's age inbetween them. Summer bday will be inconvenient tho, but I want it.

She'd lose her parents at age 9, almost 10, in a car-accident. And thus will live with her uncle during summers and her aunt during the schoolyear. Her uncle lives in Sunset Bird, while her aunt lives in Golden Grove. So she meets Cove and Jamie 2 years after Cove arrived. She meets Qiu a year before Tamarack and Franky arrive.

She would crush on them both so bad and would write all her five friends letters, like super fancy too. And both of them would crush back. It gets revealed she's crushing on them, one summer when the Golden Grove gang goes along to Sunset Bird for the summer and they split up in two groups. Her uncle is a tattletale and lets it slip to the both of them.

Also her room at her Aunt's is literally the attic, so super big.

She also cried during her first birthday without her parents.

Ok but like. SQH is a Child from Divorce™. He also wrote a Stallion novel where the protagonist married who knows how many times and forgot about his new wife as soon as he said yes. Mind you, he was pandering to his fans, but he could have also just kept the harem smaller and still write porn scenes with the current wives. So my point being. And I'm also very interested in this because I have read MANY moshang fics and I only saw this like twice (to my recollection). How would SQH take the fact that he is forced to marry? What is his opinion of marriage in general?

Yes, this is a fake marriage, but he is also marrying his favorite character who constantly (?) beats him. His favorite character who he still believes will kill him in the future? And now he has to worry about practically EVERYONE out there trying to kill him so he doesn't get to marry MBJ.

Is SQH being dismissive about the marriage to MBJ saying, don't worry my King, we know is fake and you can marry a demoness in the future who can give you powerful heirs?

(and MBJ being offended, because even if they are forced he would still take their marriage seriously because he doesn't want to be like his father. And he definitely doesn't want more than one spouse)

SQH saying, Oh I know this magical plant that can give you an heir and it only needs one person's ADN, don't worry about my human side tainting your line.

Or him excusing them to TLJ about not having children now because they are too young, they want to enjoy their relationship without caring about children for now? (Or, if there is Didi, SQH quickly jumps on how Didi already has all their attention, there is no way he can deal with another child)

SQH being going from being very scared to scared and very annoyed and angry about this situation. He doesn't want to marry! Marriage is a sham! Everyone wants to kill him for something he didn't ask for or even wants!

And MBJ being very offended that his human servant, who he still has no idea why works for him, is dragging his feet about this. MBJ will be a King! SQH should feel HONORED.

Also. How old are they? How long has it been since SQH started working for MBJ? Are they in their twenties? Or not even that?

I am quite fond of “arranged marriage / forced marriage” concepts, so I was thinking about how that unfortunately that doesn’t really work with Moshang in a Canon AU, except then I remember that Tianlang-Jun (agent of chaos and incurable romantic) would probably LOVE the whole “oh yeah, as the so-called ‘Demon Emperor’ I can matchmake anyone I like for funsies” thing.

In the “servant to a different king” AU I proposed months ago, Shang Qinghua (without System restrictions) dumps Cang Qiong Mountain Sect before becoming head disciple and saves Tianlang-Jun and Su Xiyan. So, let’s say that in this AU, Shang Qinghua anonymously gives Su Xiyan a heads-up and does successfully become the candidate for the next Lord of An Ding Peak.

Only, in that vague time before “when Tianlang-Jun was supposed to be imprisoned” and “the ascension of the new generation of Peak Lords”, Mobei-Jun’s family gets in trouble with the newly married, new father, newly interested in politics to protect his family Demon Emperor. Linguang-Jun implicated his brother in some scheme and cozied up in the hopes of being the Demon Emperor’s “appointed” next Northern King, maybe?

Only the scheme backfires because Tianlang-Jun is a spiteful bastard (and maybe not entirely fooled by this web), so he’s like, “Hey, what if I kill the Northern King and keep his body? What if I don’t give him back afterwards?” So, Mobei-Jun’s family will lose thousands of years of inherited power. Mobei-Jun’s family is panicking over this (including Linguang-Jun), which Tianlang-Jun finds delicious, and he’s like, “Hey, what WOULD you do in order for me to let him live or at least give you back the body? Dance for my amusement here, people; I want GOOD suggestions.”

SOMEWHERE along the line (don’t know how or who suggests it), marriage to a human pops up as an idea. Tianlang-Jun is married to a human and has a half-human son. Wouldn’t that show the Demon Emperor that Mobei-Jun’s family doesn’t hate humans and didn’t try to kill the empress?

Mobei-Jun basically exists to be the next Northern King and hey, he knows a human being, so he grabs head disciple (almost Peak Lord) Shang Qinghua from An Ding Peak and brings him before the Demon Emperor. (Mobei-Jun is kind of panicking here. Whatever his personal feelings for his father are, they CANNOT lose his father’s body.) Mobei-Jun’s explanation of the situation to Shang Qinghua on the way is not very good and very confusing, but part of that is because the situation is very ridiculous because Tianlang-Jun is ridiculous.

So, young Shang Qinghua is forced to spin a forbidden love story for the Demon Emperor (and possibly a large audience of demon royalty/nobility), in which he saved Mobei-Jun’s life and they’ve been secretly seeing each other for years. Tianlang-Jun is like, “Wow, I was probably just going to destroy the body no matter what they did, but this IS good. Keep talking. I really relate to this forbidden demon-human love story you have going on. A powerful demon lord and a human cultivator? Love it!”

Shang Qinghua’s explanation is SO GOOD, in fact, that Tianlang-Jun decides not only to let the current Northern King live after all, but to personally throw Shang Qinghua and Mobei-Jun a fabulous wedding.

Tianlang-Jun: “Xiyan and I eloped, so we didn’t really get to do the whole Big Fat Demon Wedding thing, but you two can! This is great. Xiyan and I don’t have any other demon-human couples to hang out with. You two should have kids A.S.A.P. so my son can have some half-human friends around his age.” (As far as Tianlang-Jun is concerned, if they ARE faking it, he’s going to make them do the whole monkey-dance anyway just to see how far they’ll take it.)

Shang Qinghua is like, “Great! Sounds great!” While Mobei-Jun is completely stone-faced (like, more than normal somehow) because he doesn’t actually want to marry his human servant, but can’t object without bringing down all the consequences just avoided.

So Shang Qinghua has to go back to Cang Qiong Mountain Sect and say, “Yeah, I’m leaving the sect. I’m stepping down. Can’t be the next An Ding Peak Lord, sorry. I’m getting married.” And people are like, “Well, you can be a Peak Lord and married, that’s fine.” And Shang Qinghua has to be like, “Haha, yeah, no. Expect an extremely dramatic messenger from the Demon Emperor tomorrow, probably complete with fireworks and confetti. I’m kind of being willingly forced to marry the son of the Northern Demon King.”

I know i said this recently but Airplane's detachment from others and tendency to see people as characters isn't because he's the author and a transmigrator

He's just like that

He doesn't view the readers of PIDW as real. They are caricatures and internet forum stereotypes and a nameless hungry beast he has to feed but they aren't real

Even Peerless Cucumber, both before and after transmigrating, isn't a real person to him. He's a black powder anti fan. He puts just as much of a character role on Shen Yuan as he does on Shen Jiu

It's how he talks about people in general. And it's clearly a protective measure. He makes a living appealing to the masses and farming internet hate. He's detached so it doesn't get to him. So he can read the criticism and laugh

He goes to hate threads about his work and is able to smirk and make jokes because they aren't real to him because they can't be. If he acknowledges the reality it's going to break him

Plus the whole child of divorce who is abandoned by both parents as they build new families without him thing

He's detached because attachment scares him

The only thing he lets himself be attached to is Mobei Jun because he's the only thing he lets himself be truly selfish over and make for himself

And I think it's really important that the system would have let him kill Mobei Jun

That means, unlike everything else that happens to him in SVSSS, everything to do with his relationship with his king is his choice

He could literally kill Mobei Jun at any moment and he doesn't because he's his choice he decision to engage and connect with someone else

He doesn't even have to stay to save Mobei from his Uncle! He can literally just go back his OG life

What makes Mobei different is that it's a relationship he has to actively choose for himself and cultivate on his own. He chooses to attach himself to Mobei and only Mobei

And if that isn't something that is accidentally reflected in both Bingge and Bingmei

Bingge who has no attachment and no fulfillment despite having power. Who is lonely and detached and has no one he truly cares about. That's a reflection of Airplane and a reflection of a Shang Qinghua who chose to kill Mobei in that clearing

Bingmei is a reflection (of sorts) of our Shang Qinghua who took a chance and made an attachment and at the end of the day is willing to do anything to keep it

I just think Shang Qinghua/Airplane is a fascinating guy

We learn a bit about Shang Qinghua/Airplane's original family during the Airplane Extras. Not only do we learn that his parents divorced when he was young, but also a little bit about the relationship between them:

His parents had divorced early, each going their separate ways, and they had both made all-new families for themselves long ago. He occasionally got together with them for a meal, but no matter which side it was, he regularly felt that his presence was extremely obtrusive. As he politely picked up food and politely gave them subservient smiles, the meals would be even more formal than they would have been if he were eating with real strangers.  Even though his father was his legal guardian, when they weren’t face-to-face, they didn’t have contact other than a few phone calls on the new year and holidays, or when his father asked him if he needed money. Sometimes, his father would even forget to ask that, but Shang Qinghua never reminded him. No matter where he was, or who he was talking to, all he did was smile that familiar subservient smile. He was an adult, after all. His parents still had to pay his university tuition, but it was up to him to find ways to pay for the rest of his expenses. (7 Seas, Ch. 26)

He doesn't seem to have a good relationship with either of his parents-- strained with his father, and not really even mentioned with his mother-- and isn't close with any half siblings or other family members either. Therefore, depictions of Shang Qinghua as a child of divorce, as well as those which show him to be particularly affected by it, are canonically-accurate.

An Interview with Galina Roslyakova: Vlad’s personal life according to his mother

A year after the shooting, BAZA, a Russian news outlet, interviewed Vlad’s mother Galina Roslyakova. Here are several details she had disclosed about her son:

He was gifted in drawing and engineering, however was an average student.

When he was younger, Vlad attended a kindergarten in Kerch with a chess focus. His mother considered him as a normal child who had an interest in drawing. He had hobbies such as architectural modeling, construction, and designing. He had a particular fascination with airplane models that he would try to configure by himself, although his father would occasionally help.

He then continued to paint throughout his life and excelled at it, Galina believes he inherited this skill from his father, Igor. Vlad mostly expressed an interest in drawing domestic animals and portraits of people. He focused a lot on the details and drew rather thoroughly. Unfortunately, she has none of his drawings left to reminisce.

In school, he was “statistically average”. He studied for at least three to five hours and was in the middle line of poor to excelling. He didn't dislike nor have an interest in school and had no specific goal yet. According to Galina, “Not all dreams can be realized.” So in a pragmatic sense, his parents tried to instill something that would have perhaps helped him by trying to search for something suitable for his life and future. She had also described Vlad to be somewhat confused or unsure of himself:

“You can show a different side of yourself. You can realize yourself somewhere else. And this period of transition from school to college was somehow unconscious. A lot depends on how this might turn out. Every person's views and values ​​change. Children must realize during this period that they are growing up primarily for themselves. He understood that he was not quite a child and not quite an adult.”

Vlad did not finish highschool and went straight to college, explaining why he was 18 during his 4th year.

Galina and Igor saw no point in enrolling him into 10th and 11th grade because it was unclear to them that he would graduate at all, seeing that his academic performance was mediocre at best. During his transition from highschool to college, Galina recalled it to be a stressful experience, “just like any other transition”, she says. She had attended all parent meetings and recalled that teachers would often describe her son to be socially inept. He was not keen on socializing but she figured this must have been his way of coping with his adaptation, since it was a contrasting environment to what he was used to.

“I went to all parent meetings. At the beginning of the training they were carried out. I talked with curators and other teachers. There was a phrase that he was not very sociable . Not all people are open and ready to communicate with others. At that time it was a period of adaptation. Everyone tolerates it differently, but I wouldn’t say that he had a difficult time with it.”

More on relationships, since their house was located in a residential area not far from other neighbors who lived nearby, Vlad easily could communicate with a few neighborhood kids whom his mother considered to be his “friends”. Rather, they were his classmates. 

“I think Vlad chose exactly those friends who suited him according to his views and interests at that period of his life when he was at school. He also played Minecraft. Well, of course, communication there is no longer only with classmates.”

Vlad still kept in contact with his father despite his mother's wishes to not be so in touch.

Technically, Vlad's parents were not officially divorced. Igor’s traumatic brain injury which subsequently led to the development of a mental illness was seen by Galina as a danger toward her and her son if they continued to live together. Coupled with the fact that he developed a dependency on alcohol, she had figured out that she had to make the resolution to move out with her son to protect their well-being. Despite this, Galina mentions that even with their separation, Vlad still communicated with his father, since it is a relationship not within her control. At first, Vlad was offended but as he grew, he began to contemplate the idea of his mother’s decision. He continued to communicate with his father as he grew older.

“With age, he made his own decision. He begins to make his choice whether he should communicate with his father. What will this give him and does he need it? That is, he could decide for himself. That is, in this regard, I gave him freedom of choice.”

He would often go to the garage together on weekends, which developed Vlad's interest in technology and personal interests like motorcycles, which he would’ve liked to study. Vlad then on became a major in the course: installation, commissioning and operation of electrical equipment of industrial and civil buildings.

Signs of isolation and depression were under the radar since he barely communicated.

Apart from the detail that teachers have said he was rather not very sociable, closer to the third year he already became withdrawn and kept to himself. He would often divert this topic of his behavior as his ‘right to privacy’ whenever asked, so no further questions would ensue. He was silent most of the time, got ready to go to class straight away and sat in his room ("another office") to scroll through his phone. He was quiet, didn't talk about himself that much, which led her to not anticipate the events that would unfold soon after. However, she said that she could sense a slight change in him, since he became more private. She did respect his boundaries however, since she saw it as his right to personal space. 

“Well, slightly, so to speak. Because, in principle, many people reach such a period and age, and so, in communicating with their friends who have children of this age, many children tend to have, so to speak, personal space. Personal life, this is how the period begins. You know, like “I have the right to personal space, ‘I have the right to privacy.’ Within reason, because we live together in the same apartment”

Did he need more attention? Galina expresses that although she didn't primarily focus on him at all times, she did care for him and paid attention. She tried to make him talk and actively made efforts to communicate with him to get him to open up more about himself, however to no avail. So, in an outward perspective, everything seemed rather normal for her, and with the lack of properly established and structured communication, it was difficult to see through her son. After all, you cannot properly fit in puzzle pieces when there are no pieces provided to arrange.

It was difficult for her to speculate about the topic of whether or not he was depressed, nor did she anticipate that somehow he felt abandoned because he would often just sweep things under the rug. The signs didn’t manifest in any way in everyday life because again, he was very secretive and rarely talked about himself in conversations at home, so things easily fell out of notice and undetected.

“What percentage of love do children want to receive from us? Do we feel this as parents? Or if they tell us, let’s say: 'Well, at the technical school there were difficult tasks and classes, I’m so tired that I don’t want to communicate.' And you are trying to do everything to make contact with him. The children say: 'Well, I don’t want to now.' You won't really force him too much... But you still have to try to do it. Basically, I tried to do all this. What provoked it, I can’t say anything. For me, all this still remains a big, big secret as a mother. I cannot put together logic and specific pieces of the puzzle for myself. Therefore, everything remains like this.”

Vlad's online presence was monitored until the age of 14.

Galina had monitored his online access until he was around the ages of 13 to 14. After the age of 16, this period however stopped because of the gap between parents and their children's familiarity with devices and the technologicaĺ world. So, she stopped keeping track. 

“I wished in my heart that somewhere they had slowed him down.”

She was unaware of his online presence in crime communities since 2016. According to her, at home he only sat and played minecraft,

“I didn't see this. If a person really wants to hide something... Maybe he did it sometimes, but not in my presence. At home he sat and played Minecraft. He talked there with one, then with another, then boys, then girls - they all communicate with each other there, laugh. There were different emotions, there was laughter.”

She was aware that he went to study firearms in the summer.

Vlad shared a common interest with his father with firearms. He also said he would join the army. Galina speculated that this might be due to the benefits, since the income of military salaries was fairly high. Vlad earned an internship at a plant prior to this, and it was good news for her but in reality, Vlad's perspective was that he did not generally take a liking to the place.

According to him, “I talked to the people who work there, I don’t see much prospects in income and in general my place in this.”

During the summer, he then began to study firearms through the internet and via the Internet, register with government services, and collect documents. She was against this act because she saw no purpose to this, however, she couldn't stop him. He excused this by saying he had an interest in hunting. Though she initially thought that he had given up on this prospect and moved on, since these documents were rather complex and difficult to complete, he then went on to successfully buy a gun after passing the exams and receiving his license. 

She hadn't known of this, of course, since it was reported that he hid his gun in an abandoned warehouse to avoid speculations from her.

Y'know I'm not going to go and argue with people but I'm. kinda weirded out by the "Shen Yuan's family was actually neglectful/awful/abusive" takes? Because we have a story where:

a point is made about cycles of violence and how abuse creates more abuse (with Qiu Jianluo - Shen Jiu - Bing-ge sequence).

a point is made about how the person can turn out very differently depending on their environment growing up (with differences between Bing-ge and Bing-mei).

And like... how does one look at those two points, then at Shen Yuan saying he had a loving family, and forgoes the obvious conclusion - that growing up in a stable home is what sets him apart in the world of PIDW (including from literal author of the world who is a lonely and embittered child of the divorce!) and allows him to change it with the power of love & kindness & bonding with people - in favor of deciding that his family was ~actually~ horrible?..

In that case, what makes him capable of breaking the cycle? Some kind of innate goodness or kindness? That, for some reason, no other character happened to possess? Right. Nice going completely devaluing Shen Jiu's tragedy.

To explain the last point: we get a lot of backstory for Shen Jiu, and the obvious takeaway from it is that he was not born a scum villain. That he did have a desire to do (and be) good, but it just couldn't flourish - because of a combination of terrible circumstances of his youth, his personal flaws, and the demands of the meta-narrative.

Thing is... two of those problems, he shares with Shen Yuan. Shen Yuan has his own personal flaws aplenty, even if they differ from Shen Jiu's, and a literal manifestation of the meta-narrative haunting him. But, unlike Shen Jiu, he happened to have a good family. That is their fundamental difference.

If one argues that Shen Yuan's family situation actually wasn't good, then what allows him to be so different from Shen Jiu? Isn't that saying that Shen Yuan was just a good person from the start... and Shen Jiu was just a bad person from the start? you know, the exact sentiment that made Shen Jiu give up on himself? And isn't it flattening Shen Jiu's story from a tragedy of a person who was broken out of his desire to do good by his terrible circumstances, into just 'a bad guy doing bad things because he's bad'? like, exactly what Airplane did to him in PIDW...

But, some of you may ask, don't we have evidence that Shen Yuan wasn't actually very happy in his past life?

Thing is, I don't disagree with that! I just think it didn't necessarily have anything to do with the quality of his home life.

For starters, having a loving family is not everything. Like, even if you just look at Maslow's pyramid, "love and belonging" is actually in the middle of the thing. Shen Yuan could have a perfectly fine, caring family and still be unfulfilled on "esteem" (recognition and respect from other ppl + personal feelings of accomplishment) and "self-actualization" (becoming the best possible version of himself) levels.

And that's before we factor in that he's a(n obviously if you read between the lines) queer dude who grew up in a country that criminalizes queerness which is something I don't see brought up a lot in discussions of the strength of his internalized homophobia, and the possibility that he is an undiagnosed neurodivergent person (i personally hc him as having adhd-I, i know there are also ppl with autistic headcanons, could be both, etc etc), and the influence of his social circle outside his family (cishet dudes on the forums, from what he know, so not the most positive and uplifting bunch)...

Lastly, while I think the thematic evidence from the first half of this meta is more telling, there are also a few small in-text details that prove Shen Yuan's words about how close-knit his family was.

First, the way he compares Yue Qingyuan to his older brothers in the very beginning, at the time he is still finding his footing and YQY is the one person looking out for him. (On the subject of SY!SQQ and YQY, just read this post, I won't be able to put it better.) Shen Yuan is explicitly "feeling at home in the atmosphere of brotherly love".

Second, the fact that we know he read his younger sister's danmei novels. On Shen Yuan's side, literally how committed he had to be to supporting his sister's interests, when we know from being in his head how determined he is about playing ostrich with anything and everything gay. No shit he spoiled her, I believe that one hundred percent. And on his sister's side, the level of trust she has towards her brother? Having full confidence that she could make him read gay bdsm and he wouldnt love her any less?..

So yeah, I think all signs point to Shen family being as close-knit and loving as Shen Yuan says.

Jake was naturally an early riser and being in the Navy since he was eighteen only increased that tendency. Waking up before his alarm, Jake cracked his eyes open and let out a sigh as he stretched his back.

Nickie was drooling onto Jake’s shirt, absolutely knocked out, and happily curled up into his dad’s side. Jake was about to reach up to try and clean up some of the drool when he realized that his arm was somewhat immobilized. Looking over towards Lena’s side of the bed, Jake found her arm wrapped around his own with her lips brushing against the skin of his shoulder.

Taking in the arrangement for a moment, Jake simply sunk into bed and enjoyed the arrangement. The last time that he woke up to any sleeping situation that was remotely like this one was before Lena divorced him. Probably by a couple weeks, if not months. And Jake could really get used to waking up like this in the morning. He really could.

But, unfortunately, he still had to go to work.

Jake started by carefully lifting his arm away from Lena, who let go relatively easy. She shifted a bit, but remained asleep. And now came the harder part of the job—getting Nickie off of him without waking him up. Carefully shifting Nickie over, Jake rolled his son onto his side. Nickie let out a noise, but quickly found the warmth from his mom and shifted over.

With his family settled, Jake slipped out of bed and stood up. Grabbing his phone, Jake prepared to head over to the guest bedroom to dress for work. Looking back at Nickie and Lena for a moment, Jake paused and returned to the bed. Careful of his weight, Jake leaned over a pressed a kiss to Nickie’s forehead. He gently brushed his fingers over Lena’s hand before heading out.

Jake changed into his uniform and was about to head out the door when he glanced back at Lena’s bedroom. Jake stared at Lena and Nickie as they cuddled in the warmth of deep sleep for a moment. He took a quick look at his watch before walking into Lena’s office to grab two pieces of paper from the printer.

Lena woke up to her alarm going off. Reaching blindly for it, Lena paused for a second when she felt her hand press down on some folded paper. She managed to turn off her alarm before it woke up Nickie and pulled the piece of paper closer to inspect it. Squinting her eyes, Lena realized that it was a paper airplane.

Where the hell did that come from?

Lena slowly unfolded the pages of paper to reveal a letter. And she immediately recognized that small and square-shaped writing style. Careful to not wake up Nickie, Lena sat up a little bit in her bed and started reading through the note. But, of course, Nickie just seemed to sense that something was going on and started to wake up beside her.

“Mommy?” Nickie called, rubbing his eyes in that distinctly toddler way. “What’s that?”

“It’s a letter. From your dad,” Lena replied, brushing Nickie’s hair with her hand and pressing a kiss to the top of his head in greeting. “He had to go because of work.”

“When’s he coming home?” Nickie asked, starting to sit up.

“He didn’t say. He might be late, though. Apparently, they’re doing a lot of training today,” Lena explained to Nickie, setting aside the letter. “He’ll probably be home after dinner.”

“Okay,” Nickie sighed, sleepily leaning on his mom.

“Go back to bed, sweetheart. You’ve got an hour before you have to be up,” Lena replied with a light chuckle, rubbing her son’s back.

Jake was growing increasingly annoyed with his fellow squad members and their inability to adapt to the mission. Was the whole thing absolutely batshit? Yes. Was Maverick’s plan also absolutely batshit? Yes. But a mission was a mission. And Jake had every intention of getting the job done and coming back home in one piece.

And Rooster was really starting to piss him off beyond their normal level of contention.

Jake and Bradley had never really gotten along. Not before Jake started dating Lena. Definitely not while he was dating her. And not even when Jake married her and they had Nickie together. There was a brief period of compromise when Lena was sent for extra testing to see if she had the same disease that took Carole. But when all the tests came back normal, it was right back to fighting over everything.

And today was going to be no different.

Jake’s jaw ticked every single time that Rooster acted all high and mighty. Like a protector for the rest of the Dagger Squad as if they all weren’t grown ass adults who would have never made it this far in their careers if they couldn’t hold their own.

The only person that Rooster cared about was himself. He claimed to fight for the greater good, but he always had selfish intentions behind it. Rooster inserted himself into Lena and Jake’s marriage to ‘protect’ his little sister, even though Lena told him that she had it handled multiple times. He inserted himself into Nickie’s life, trying to be the father that Nickie already had. As if Jake wouldn’t have taken a bullet for either Lena or Nickie without even a second thought.

And now, Rooster was using that same façade to try and hide his personal vendetta against Maverick from the rest of the squad. Rooster wasn’t pushing back against Maverick because he cared about his fellow aviators. Rooster pushed back against Maverick because he wanted to prove Maverick wrong. To prove to Maverick that he was good enough. And Jake was sick of it.

“Why’re you dead? You’re team leader up there. Why are you, why is your team, dead?” Maverick demanded from Rooster, causing a small smirk to tug at Jake’s lips.

“Sir, he’s the only one who made it to the target,” Phoenix stated to Rooster’s defense.

“A minute late. He gave enemy aircraft time to shoot him down. He is dead,” Maverick insisted firmly.

“You don’t know that,” Rooster argued back.

“You’re not flying fast enough,” Jake snapped with an edge of amusement at his former brother-in-law. “You don’t have a second to waste.”

“We made it to the target.”

“And superior enemy aircraft intercepted you on your way out,” Maverick interjected, causing Rooster to whip around to face him.

“Then it’s a dogfight.”

“Against fifth generation fighters,” Maverick pointed out harshly.

“Yeah, we’d still have a chance.”

“In an F-18!”

“It’s not the plane, sir. It’s the pilot,” Rooster replied, a bit smugly.

“Exactly!” Maverick shouted.

A moment of silence passed while Rooster tried to respond and not lose his shit while doing it.

“There’s more than one way to fly this mission,” Rooster finally choked out, his voice breaking slightly.

“You really don’t get it,” Hangman drawled, his Texas twang coming out more. Lena always used to say that she could tell when he was either really annoyed or really happy based on how thick his accent came out. And he certainly wasn’t happy right now. “On this mission, a man flies like Maverick here, or a man does not come back.”

Hangman turned to Phoenix across the way and a smirk wormed its way back onto his lips. He and Phoenix had always been rivals from the second that they met. And hell, Jake did owe her one for keeping Rooster in check during his wedding to Lena. But right now? She was just another part of Jake’s deep-seated frustration with Rooster.

“No offense intended,” he stated, causing Phoenix to tilt her chin up.

“Yet somehow, you always manage,” Bob spoke up to his pilot’s defense.

“Look, I don’t mean to criticize. You’re conservative, that’s all,” Hangman continued, turning to face the front of the hangar again.

“Lieutenant,” Maverick warned, staring Jake down.

“We’re going into combat, son. On a a level no living pilot’s ever seen.”

It was then that Jake set his sights on the other man that he blamed for getting inside Lena’s head about their marriage—Maverick. He wasn’t nearly as vocal as Rooster was about his disapproval of their relationship. It was in the subtle stares that said something along the lines of ‘why did Lena pick you?’ that grated on his nerves. And the subtle digs about his skills as a pilot, since Maverick had access to all of those records.

So, in Hangman’s book, Maverick wasn’t exactly a friend when it came to his relationship with Lena.

“. . . Not even him,” Hangman continued, staring straight into Maverick’s soul.

Maverick frowned and turned back to Jake, but Jake was already turning to Rooster. And perhaps Jake was dramatic and perhaps he held a grudge and perhaps he needed to look inside himself a little bit more, but in that moment, Hangman was living out about seven years of built-up frustration with both Rooster and Maverick.

“That’s no time to be thinking about the past,” Hangman drawled calmly.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Rooster demanded defensively, turning to glare at Hangman.

“Rooster,” Maverick warned, hoping to avoid a fight.

“I don’t think that you want to start a conversation with me about the past, Hangman,” Rooster spat, which made the smirk drop from Jake’s face.

Sensing the tension building, the Dagger Squad members who had no idea what was going on shared confused, but nervous looks. Coyote and Phoenix locked eyes, both on the edge of their seats because they both knew just what history Rooster was threatening to talk about. Hangman’s dig had been vague, but that feral glare on Rooster’s face was sign of only one particular history.

Lena. Lena and Nickie.

And as soon as they got brought up, it was going to go nuke in that hangar.

“Right, because you always know best, don’t you, Rooster?” Hangman growled, deep in his chest.

“I know better than you,” Rooster snapped back.

“You would have stayed the fuck out of it if you knew better,” Hangman retorted, glaring straight into Rooster’s soul. “Worry about your own problems, Bradshaw.”

“Lieutenants!” Maverick demanded, trying to get their attention.

“It’s not like you were going to take care of them anyways, Seresin.”

That just seemed to uncork the years of pent-up frustration. All of the complaints and comments that Jake just swallowed down to keep the peace came bursting out. But, hell, between the mission and the fact that a life with Lena and Nickie by his side was dangled right in front of him the night before, Hangman snapped. And Rooster was right there with him.

The other Dagger Squad members leapt to their feet the second that Hangman and Rooster got to their feet. People were shouting and there was a lot of attempts to get in between Rooster and Hangman. Even Maverick and Hondo got involved. Coyote, Payback, and Maverick dragged Jake away from swinging at Rooster, who was just as pissed.

“Stay the fuck away from my son!” Jake snapped at Rooster, still fighting against the holds on him.

“Like hell I will!” Bradley growled back, just as pissed.

“You don’t think that I realize what the fuck you’re trying to do!?” Jake yelled back, trying to push forward. “Trying to turn him against me!? Turning Lena against me wasn’t enough for you!?”

“You did that yourself!”

“Fuck you, Bradshaw!”

“You were never there for her!”

“Yes, I was! You just refused to see it!”

“I protected my family!”

“They’re my family!”

“ENOUGH!”

The entire hangar quite literally shook from Maverick’s bellow. Everyone kept a tight hold on Rooster and Hangman, but there was a subtle draw of attention to Maverick. The captain glanced between Rooster and Hangman with a steeled expression that negated any personal affection that he held for either of them.

This wasn’t about Rooster or Hangman now. It was about Nickie, who was a little boy with more father figures that would fight to the death for him than he knew what to do with. Now, if only those father figures realized that they should be on the same team—Nickie’s team—instead of fighting among themselves like animals.

“Everyone else out. Hangman and Rooster stay,” Maverick demanded, gesturing to the exit.

He wasn’t Uncle Maverick or Ex-Father-In-Law Maverick anymore. No, he was Maverick, the man who swore to Goose to beat up any boy who caused Lena pain. And, in this case, those two boys just happened to be her older brother and her ex-husband.

And Mav wasn’t going to go easy on them. Not this time.

Lena walked down the hallway, letting Hondo stay a step ahead of her. She glanced nervously at the pictures on the walls and gripped her purse strap just a bit tighter. Top Gun always made her nervous. Even when Bradley and Jake graduated—separate occasions—from Top Gun, she never felt truly at ease on this base. Not with its history with the Bradshaw family.

“How bad was it?” she asked Hondo quietly, causing the warrant officer to pause briefly.

“Let’s just say, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Maverick yell like that before.”

“And hopefully you won’t have to . . . again,” Lena added with a whisper.

“They’re in there,” Hondo stated, gesturing to the classroom.

“Thank you, Hondo,” Lena replied softly, turning to the warrant officer. “And give your wife my best.”

With a nod, Hondo disappeared down the corridor. Taking a breath, Lena reached for the door knob and stepped into the room. The classroom was lit, but somewhat dimly, casting an odd glow around the room. As if she wasn’t already on edge.

Lena spotted Bradley first, sitting with a pout and his arms crossed over his chest. He was still dressed in his flight suit and Lena was relieved to see no bruises or cuts on his face. Jake was sitting on the other side of the room. He was angrily twirling a toothpick around his mouth and leaning far back in his seat with his legs spread and a dark expression on his face. He didn’t seem to be harmed either.

Maverick was leaning at the desk at the front of the classroom, looking as serious as Lena had seen him in a long time. That was an expression that he always reserved for whenever he was well and truly angry. And Maverick only got well and truly angry when someone was doing stupid shit and putting someone else at risk.

This was going to be a fun conversation.

“Where’s Nickie?” Jake asked, breaking the seemingly deadlocked silence.

“Babysitter,” Lena replied, turning to her ex-husband. Penny, to be more specific.

Glancing around the room, Lena set her purse on a desk and folded her arms across her chest. Staring down at her shoes for a moment, Lena finally picked her head up. She turned to Jake first, trying to assess his headspace. He stared at her evenly for a moment before dropping his head. She turned next to Bradley, who stared somewhat defiantly with his chin raised.

And then Lena put two and two together.

“How many times do we have to have this conversation?” Lena sighed, glancing in between Rooster and Hangman with a tired expression.

“One more time wouldn’t hurt,” Jake stated, causing Lena to round on him.

“Jake, just because we’re divorced and just because Nickie and I live a couple hours away from you, that doesn’t mean that I’m trying to keep you from Nickie. You’re his father. And whatever happens between us, you’re going to be in his life. I want you in his life. He wants you in his life. Stop trusting what everyone else says about my opinion about that.”

Jake lowered his head again, so Lena turned to face Bradley.

“Brad, stop fighting my battles for me. If I need your help, I will ask for it. I haven’t needed you to fight my battles for me in decades. Jake and I have our problems, but they’re our problems. Not yours. Just focus on being Nickie’s fun uncle. That’s all I need from you.”

“Are you sure?” Bradley asked, like he didn’t believe her.

“See?” Jake scoffed, gesturing over to Bradley.

“I can handle my brother, thank you,” Lena stressed to Jake before turning back to Bradley. “Yes, I’m sure.” Lena paused, glancing over at the photos of the past classes of Top Gun for a moment. “I know that Mom put you in charge of me, from an age that was far earlier than fair, but I don’t need you to be that for me anymore. I’m a big girl, Brad. I can take care of myself.”

Bradley still looked like he wanted to disagree, at least when it came to dealing with Hangman, but Maverick’s stern glare caused him to keep his mouth shut. With a simple nod, Bradley got to his feet. The Bradshaw siblings shared a brief hug before Bradley took his leave, probably more than eager to escape this awkward situation.

Turning to Maverick next, Lena offered him a small smile. Maverick’s annoyed and stern expression melted after a moment and he quickly relaxed. Standing up from the desk, Maverick walked over to where Lena was standing by herself.

“I think that I can take it from here,” Lena replied, glancing over at where Jake was still sitting in his seat. Turning back to Maverick, she offered him a wider smile. “Thanks for making sure that they didn’t kill each other.”

“Anytime,” Maverick stated, though he was talking more to Jake in that moment than Lena. “You know that I’m always here if you need something.”

“I know, Mav.”

Lena pulled Maverick into an appreciative hug before Maverick excused himself from the room. Lena watched Maverick walk off until the sound of his footsteps couldn’t be heard anymore. Then she slowly turned to Jake, who was already looking at her.

“Come on,” Lena spoke softly, grabbing her bag. “I think that we have some things to talk about.”

“Let’s pick up Nickie first,” Jake stated, causing Lena to pause.

“You really want Nickie to be around when we have a fight?” Lena asked quietly, causing Jake to shake his head.

“I don’t want to fight,” Jake corrected Lena, who paused for a moment. “I want to spend one of my last nights in Miramar with my son. With my family.” When Lena did not immediately reply, Jake added, “That’s all I want.”

Lena nodded slowly before turning to head out of the room with Jake right behind her. They walked slowly down the halls. Lena briefly paused at the small plaque by the front door, which was inscribed with the names of all of the service members who died on base, at Top Gun.

Jake stopped walking in time with Lena, knowing exactly what she was looking at. Whose name she was looking for. And it wasn’t hard to find. ‘Bradshaw’ was awfully close to the top of any list that was sorted alphabetically by surname.

Lena brushed her finger over her father’s name, the name that she gave her first born son and only child, to honor the man that she didn’t even truly remember. She had only been a few months old when Goose died, but yet, she still felt such a sense of loss every time that she saw his callsign.

Jake wordlessly reached out and grabbed Lena’s hand, bringing her back to the present. Turning to Jake, Lena blinked a few times before nodding slowly and heading for the exit. She didn’t move to remove her hand from Jake’s own until she had to reach for the door.

“Mommy! Daddy!” Nickie called, jumping up from his seat. He trotted over to Jake, who happily scooped him up and into his arms. “You’re here!”

“What? Did you think we were leaving you here forever?” Jake asked, setting Nickie on his hip. Ruffling Nickie’s hair, Jake turned to Penny, who smiled kindly at him. “Thanks for watching him.”

“Anything for Lena,” Penny replied, glancing over at the Bradshaw woman. “And Nickie.”

“We’ll get out of your hair. Tell Amelia that I say ‘hi’,” Lena responded, shooting Penny a thankful smile.

They stepped out of Penny’s office together and into the packed Hard Deck. Jake held Nickie protectively close with his arm wrapped around his son. Offering a hand to Lena, Jake pulled them through the crowd and towards the nearest exit.

About a half an hour later, the three of them were sitting on the sand on a blanket that Lena had tucked into her car’s trunk. The takeout that they ordered had been eaten and cleaned away, save for a few wrappers to throw out on their way back to the cars.

Lena was staring out at the waves as Jake talked about the last couple of days of training—the much safer and non-government secret version—with Nickie, who was up on his back. When Nickie let out a squeal, she quickly turned to inspect him for injury. But finding Nickie simply squealing because Jake was tickling him, she found herself unable to stop smiling.

“Not fair!” Nickie screeched, giggling and curling in on himself.

Jake rolled around so that he was on his back and Nickie was sitting up on his stomach. Lena couldn’t help but think about when Nickie was seemingly impossibly smaller, just barely able to pick his head up. And how Jake would come home after a long day at work and lay with Nickie on his stomach, entertaining his son and simply enjoying the moment. Of course, that was during some of the worst months of Jake and Lena’s relationship.

Turning back to the waves, Lena closed her eyes and focused on the distant sound of crashes, trying to not get too caught up in the darker memories. Jake and Nickie seemed to settle down after a few moments because Nickie called out to her.

“Mommy, are you sleeping?”

“No,” Lena replied, smiling over at her son. Glancing down at her watch, Lena sat up. “But we should probably be getting home soon.”

They gathered their belongings and headed back for the cars. Nickie requested to ride with Jake in his truck and Lena quickly urged them on before hopping into her own car. After a quick bath, Nickie was sent to bed and passed out when his head touched his pillow.

Closing the door behind him, Jake turned to see Lena staring up at him with her arms crossed over her chest and a serious expression on her face.

“We need to talk,” Lena spoke quietly, though firmly.

Jake nodded slowly, knowing that they did indeed have a lot to discuss, and followed her down the hall.

in retrospect it is very funny that about halfway through my first time reading svsss i decided that airplane must be a child of divorce. he got through five lines of dialogue and i was like yep there’s no way this dude didn’t come from a broken home

Okay so I have a theory.

I think Vanessa, Mike, and Garrett are Aftons. Their mom divorced William and took the kids but due to a traumatic event William blackmailed Vanessa into lying and saying she wanted to stay with William instead of her mom. I also think Vanessa may have accidentally killed Garrett, and William covered it up for her and used it to keep her loyal and obedient.

I don't think she knew Mike was her brother until that last scene where she's bandaging him and he asks her to save Abby with him, but she was definitely starting to figure it out by the time she throws his meds away. Her reaction to Abby being in danger is an intense one, because of the trauma she went through as a child for certain, but what if she knows Abby is her little sister? What if she reacted that way because she already lost her little brother, remembers him dying, and now she has the chance to protect her little sister from a similar fate?

I think she knows that William is capable of messing with their memories, and that's why she tells Mike that the dreaming thing doesn't work/isn't helpful, because she's seen first hand how he can change things to be different than what they really were. For instance, there was a yellow frisbee in the park mentioned again and again, as well as a scene where too much ketchup is put on a hamburger. I think Mike actually saw Vanessa killing Garrett and William changed his memories so he only saw Garrett being taken, not the actual incriminating act of William disposing of his body, nor of Vanessa actually accidentally killing Garrett.

I think they were all together having a fun day out as a family, with Mrs. Afton pregnant with Abby, and while playing Vanessa (or maybe even Mike) accidentally killed Garrett, and William came to see what happened when they didn't come eat when they were called. William saw what happened, realized this would look really bad, and possibly threaten his already shakey marriage with his wife, and decided to dispose of the body, maybe even teaching the kids how to do so along the way. Perhaps he even took Vanessa with him and left Michael to watch him drive away. Once he was done, he messed with their memories so that what really happened would be completely buried. Mike only remembers the airplane, Garrett in the car, the blood Ketchup, the yellow rabbit Frisbee, and his family not all of them sitting at the picnic table. This didn't bring the family closer together like William had hoped, his wife didn't lean on him for support while grieving and looking for their lost child, and eventually the Aftons divorced. William took Vanessa, because she asked to stay with him (because he told her to ask to stay with him, unless she wanted her mom to find out about Garrett) while Mike and Abby went with Mrs. Afton, who became Mrs. Schmidt. I wonder if he changed their names around while scrambling their memories one last time after the divorce, maybe Garrett was Evan at one point, and Mike (as he prefers to be called) was Michael, and Abby was going to be named Elizabeth.

Vanessa is given Garrett's plane as a trophy from William, and they continue luring children away from parties in the Pizzeria, while Mike does his best to take care of his mom and Abby. Years pass. The movie takes place.

I also think Garrett is haunting Abby. If she wasn't born yet when the Aftons went on that picnic, it would make sense that Garrett would attach himself to something or someone after a particularly traumatic death, right? Abby is seen talking to ghosts in the movie long before she visits Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, and one of her "imaginary friends" calls Mike a rude name after he sits on him. (It's gonna be so fun when Mike realized he said "at least I'm real" to his dead baby brother.) Afterwards, when Mike asks about what she remembers of Garrett disappearing, it seems like someone is telling her what to say for a second there. I think Garrett told her not to tell him anything, because he knew Mike would obsess over it and it would ruin their relationship. This was the moment Mike would have to choose Pizza or Spaghetti, because he can't have both, and the Pizza (Garrett) is already gone.

Is it ever mentioned or alluded how old was Airplane when he died?

EDIT: I have been corrected on the numbers below! I misremembered some details! Airplane Bro WAS updating 10,000 words daily with bursts of 25,000 words. We do also know that he went to university at some point. Please check out the comments added to this post for more accurate details!

As far as I know, we never really get a fixed number. We do know that Airplane was living on his own, supporting himself, no longer supported by his divorced parents. I can't remember if we actually know whether or not he went to college, but he wasn't in college when he transmigrated, I think, which suggests that he had already finished college or had dropped out by then.

Thanks to Shen Yuan, we do know that Proud Immortal Demon Way was at least 20 million words long and that Airplane Bro was notable for his speed of writing as well as how much he wrote. Shen Yuan at one point says that Airplane Bro was capable of occasionally doing multi-day 10,000 words updates, which I take to mean that Airplane Bro was overall averaging far less than 10,000 words per day, because that update schedule is nuts. The 10,000 words daily bursts were rare and remarkable.

But, if we decide to assume that Airplane Bro was really writing and posting 10,000 words a day nonstop, then that's 3,650,000 words a year. It would take him about 5.5 years to write 20,000,000 words. Let's assume that his writing schedule was slightly less nuts than that and say that he was writing about 5,000 words per day, which would mean that PIDW took him 11 years to write, which sounds a little more reasonable when I'm pretty sure that PIDW wasn't his only project. It's just the one that took off as a smash hit.

I generally headcanon Airplane starting to write novels in his mid to late teenage years, which gives him a little time to explore other projects, before maybe starting PIDW in his college years for fun at first, before he has to change his original plans in order to make money to support himself. He would be in his late twenties at the youngest, probably, unless his writing speed and update schedule really was that nuts. (Shen Yuan makes some comments about the author of PIDW having the writing skills of a child. It is admittedly funny to consider Airplane Bro maybe being a young teenager when he started writing PIDW, like 13 or 14-ish, though I don't hold it as headcanon. It's a fun fic idea.) It is way more likely that he was in his thirties when he transmigrated, especially if he only started publishing PIDW after college.

It's hard to know how old Airplane actually feels when he had to live a childhood over again in a brand new world. We don't actually get any confirmation on how old Mobei-Jun is either, but it is funny to think about Shang Qinghua potentially having 30+ years of another life on MBJ, when an age difference is, like, the least of Moshang's problems and it takes them 25+ years (however old Binghe is at the bare minimum because I'm pretty sure that they met before he was born) to actually hook up.

I still want to write at least a one-shot of Airplane Bro transmigrating in as himself (I had a tag for this, I need to go find it). He still manages to become a cultivator, maybe through author knowledge cheats, but he looks like a totally average man in his forties or fifties. Because he is not that young! And younger man Mobei-Jun, I think, especially with all of his father-related and uncle-related issues, would be so embarrassingly into this.
