Agricultural production is worth protecting; food and fiber are too important to be subject to the increasingly cruel vagaries of the weather and global trade. But as it stands, the [Federal Crop Insurance Program] is maladapted to the challenges of our modern world, where places like Arizona are routinely smashing through high heat records and water in the West is becoming increasingly scarce. While home insurers like State Farm are pulling out of California and Florida due to the mounting costs of climate disasters, the FCIP is doing the opposite: insulating farmers from the true cost of doing business. The average return for home and auto policies is about 60 cents per dollar spent on premiums. Farmers receive an average of $2.22 for every dollar they put into crop insurance. As a result, between 2000 and 2016, farming businesses—mostly large ones—collectively pocketed $65 billion more in claim payments than they paid in premiums. They were paid to plant crops that never came to market.

Reading through the notes on this is revelatory. For one thing, you realize pretty quickly that on top of slaying one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, Disease in particular, Borlaug (sp?) absolutely kneecapped another, Famine, singlefuckinhanded. Whoa.
But biology and chemistry are the realms most tied to everyone's favorite boogie men, Big Pharma and Big Agro, so they're drowning in the blood of the C-suite class's bottomless greed for profits. There are life changing medications, literally life saving in many cases, that by all rights should be seen in the same light as the Seven fuckin Wonders of the modern age!
But all that huge swaths of the world can think about is how they have to mortgage their damn souls to afford them or spend all their energy terrified of what happens if/when some dunderhead at the insurance company decides to deny them access. So instead of celebrating these wonders, we curse the cost and the worry and the bureaucratic hoops and the greedy fuckers running the insurance companies and the pharma companies and the monopolies that dictate there being only one single godsdamned source of this thing you need to the point where the treatment is nearly as bad as the condition itself.
And of course all of that stress and rage runs off a bit. Even just the tiniest bit. And now you can sneer down your nose at Biology, cuz they're not in it for the science, don't you know? They're in it for the cushy Pharma job in the lab funded with all that corporate blood money. 🤨
And then you see the other notes about Biology loosing prestige once women entered the field and it's a whole different ball of rage. Because of course the fucking sexism. Of course! 🤬
It's been true in every other industry, so of course this tracks here too. Even within professions, you can see this shit. Look at education and break it down by the age range being taught and try to explain the fucking logic.
Teachers of the youngest students getting paid the fucking least? When they have to cover more topics, and have the most responsibility for those children's safety and well-being, when the kids are their most vulnerable and impressionable? Paid least?!?
*hand to earbud* What's that? It's the age range with the highest percentage of women teaching? Well, I guess they don't need to be paid right after all. 🤨
But seriously, read some of the notes on this.
Fucking revelatory.
Okay something that bothers me is the fact physics is seen as the more prestigious of the three main sciences, with biology at the bottom and chemistry in the middle. Like. I doubt most people could name a famous biologist, but they could name 5 famous physicists. Why are Albert Einstein and Stephen hawking household names but Norman Borlaug and Jonas Salk aren't?
Not to dismiss the accomplishments of Einstein or Hawking, or their genius, but their actual tangible contributions to society have been miniscule compared to that of Borlaug or Salk who have each saved LITERALLY hundreds of millions, if not billions, of lives each. Half the food on your plate was probably grown thanks to Borlaug and Salk is the reason half your siblings didn't die of polio as a kid.
Sure Einsteins theory of relatively is important for modern satellite communications but really though how can it compare?
This is coming from someone who studied physics. I love physics, and years ago when i was at uni I looked down at biology and so did everyone else studying physics. And I know others did too. Retroactively of course I know this was so very wrong.
If society as a whole started treating biology with more respect then maybe more students would go into that field. If we had rockstars of medicine and agricultural science that were household names rather than just physicists? think of how many more lives could be saved, how many more lives could be improved.
I'm not saying physics isn't important, and more scientists of any kind is always good, but proportionally I think societies priorities are a little skewd.

The Malawi government has finally spoken out on the arrest of Malawian farm workers in Israel, clarifying that 12 out of 40 individuals detained are from the country. According to Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu, the 40 individuals, representing 13 nationalities, were arrested for leaving their designated work stations and seeking employment in town without proper authorization. Kunkuyu revealed that the group, including the 12 Malawians, had abandoned their farm work to seek jobs at a bakery in Bnei Brak, violating Israel’s labor laws and regulations.
Malawi and Israel signed a labor export deal in 2022, allowing Malawi to send unskilled laborers to Israel to work in various sectors, including agriculture and construction. The deal aimed to generate more foreign exchange revenue for Malawi and provide employment opportunities for its citizens. Under the deal, Malawian workers are expected to work in Israel for a maximum of 5 years, with a minimum salary of $1,500 per month. The deal also includes provisions for workers’ safety, health insurance, and protection from exploitation. However, the deal has faced criticism and controversy, with some opposition politicians and human rights organizations expressing concerns about the secrecy surrounding the deal and the potential risks to workers’ safety.
The arrest of the Malawian workers has raised concerns about the treatment of foreign workers in Israel and the effectiveness of the labor deal in protecting their rights. Human rights organizations have called on the Malawian government to take action to ensure the safe return of the detained workers and to review the labor deal to prevent similar incidents in the future. The incident has also sparked debate about the benefits and risks of labor export deals and the need for greater transparency and accountability in such agreements.
The mistreatment of foreign workers in Israel is well documented and would explain why the 45 workers escaped the farm to look for work elsewhere
