Subaru's main issue, obviously, is his self-loathing. Because of his mother's behavior toward him, he's convinced that he's the problem; that he's bad and dirty and the source of all of her misery. When he's regressed, the same as for all of them, he's dragged right back to that much more vulnerable mindset, where the emotional wounds are still tender and freshly painful. Even though he rationally knows he's not reliving those years, the vulnerable, hurt feelings are still very much present.

And when that state is met with kindness and care instead of the cruelty and disgust he remembers, that does things to him. It feels wrong to have what amounts to his child self treated like he's anything but a burden and a problem, and for a while, that makes Subaru deeply uncomfortable. He's more emotionally open like that, though, so the positive attention he gets, more often than not, just makes him want to curl up and hide. But slowly, it gets to him. While in such a fragile state, it's impossible not to internalize, if even just a little bit, that one person is happy he exists. Even though it hurts, still, the feeling of being wanted and loved helps to ease some of the persistent self-hatred that haunts him.

He gets frightened easily but never cries and follows every rule, and is like a massive nerd and randomly spouts facts, and hardly ever speaks if he’s not spoken to. And Evan makes a joke to Pandora to kill herself, and Barty gives a heartfelt pep talk, “my grandma said when people tell you to kill yourself they’re just stressed cuz of work, and that they don’t really mean it, I mean my dad says that all the time but he would be sad if I actually did it, well I think,” and by the end all of the Skittles want to kill Barty Crouch Sr.

Oh gosh, Laito!!! Poor baby just feels so vulnerable that he almost wants the reader to make it about sex because that's what's familiar amd what feels right. When they don't he's just waiting for it to happen but his regressed side is still hopeful and it hurts!!!

Exactly! Laito doesn't know what to do with a situation where his usual pervert persona isn't an option. That's how he's coped with every threat for almost longer than he can remember, so a scenario that's both incredibly vulnerable and doesn't allow him to compensate for that in his usual way feels like a threat. It feels like he'll be safer if he can make this the same as it always is, make it about lust and desire and cruelty instead of whatever you're trying to inflict on him, but there's also a pathetically hopeful part of himself that's crawling out of where he left it smothered to beg for this to be real. If love, even like this, could really be so tender, he doesn't know whether he'd hate that more than anything or never want to let what you're offering him out of his grasp.
