I was just reading about him!! Jingle Jangle on Netflix (steampunk Christmas musical about a genius little black girl) has gorgeous costuming that is clearly inspired by his designs.

Frock Flicks did a post about it, which is how I discovered Shonibare's work!!

two movies that play with history in costuming in ways that make Brain Go Brrrr for me:
Jingle Jangle, A Christmas Journey (2020). the actual plot was very much a "this is fine but I'm not the intended audience and I didn't watch it as a child, so it will never have the nostalgia factor and it doesn't particularly compel me as an adult. and that's okay!" situation
but the COSTUMES. oh my god. Cheyney McKnight calls this "Afro-Victorian," and they did it in such an amazing way. one part that struck me is the way the clothes change over time- they didn't have to start it with 1860s-inspired fashions and then make the 30 Years Later timeskip clearly 1890s. it's a fantasy land; people would have forgiven them. but they DID and it's SO COOL
Tumblr media
beginning of the movie. the hoops! the little perched hats! this is clearly like 1865, but it works in a lot of both fantastical twists and colors and patterns inspired by various African cloth-dyeing traditions
Tumblr media
main character's adult daughter, after the timeskip. puffed sleeves! menswear-inspired tailoring! this is clearly Fantasy 1890s!
Tumblr media
main character's granddaughter and her friends post-timeskip. honestly, I say African-inspired textile colors and prints, but some of these would definitely not be out of place in classic European Victorian fashion. mostly the plaid on the white girl here. appropriate skirt lengths for little girls! Cute BootsTM! hats on 99% of the female characters in this shot!
the other is The Favourite (2018)
early 18th century is severely underrepresented in film. the 1690s-1710s were gorgeous and I will die on this hill. plus the way they play around with laser-cut trim and exaggerated hair and makeup is heightening the period look, not watering it down to suit modern sensibilities
Tumblr media
Queen Anne and her lover are doing something here; I forget what. I liked the movie, but it wasn't a- pardon the pun -favorite
Tumblr media
would she have been wearing full-on masc clothing to shoot? probably not. is it reasonably accurate masc clothing for the era, but Stylized? yes! Also This Is Hot so I'm not complaining. maybe I'd be more into butches if they wore historical menswear...? anyway I digress
Tumblr media
holy Tim Burton wet dream I love it so much
do I think Black Panther deserved to win the Oscar that year because the designer had to create a whole visually cohesive clothing culture from scratch? yes. do I still love the costumes in this movie? YES.
so like. it's not that I require 100% accuracy! I just like movies to be having a conversation with history rather than shouting over it, if that makes sense. (also avoiding my specific pet peeves- just be normal about corsets and put women's hair up/add hats where there should be hats. please?)

DressGothic (AF) and Pirate (AF) replaced with @deedee-sims Victorian Ghost Dress
The top two dresses are for dress gothic (their file titles in SimPe are bloody red and deadly black which I thought was cool), the bottom row are pirate. Everyday only. I finally have a dress that fits my vision of Cassandra Goth 🙌🏾 (Kinda feeling the afro as well... lol)

Do u have headcanons about or what do you think about a 90s or 00s AU (maybe) where Curly Shepard is a punk and Ponyboy a goth or a babybat? ^_^ Like imagine purly but ponyboy tries to show his obsession for edgar allan poe and curly or the gang JUST DON'T GET IT 😭
wym anon that literally already IS purly🙄🙄
BUT YEA I DO HAVE HCS!!!! o(^-^)o
(for context who dont know, baby at is the name for like ppl who r newly goth basically, theyre just starting out listening to music n stuff like that)
•since curly is punk here and the whole idea of punks is essentially anti establishment and love individuality i will NOT make him make fun of pony for being goth, especially when hes a babybat hes just embracing himself
•also curly is curly i feel like hes a bit morbid himself and would be at the very least interested in edgar allen poe, so even if he wasnt punk he wouldnt make fun of pony for liking him, even if he does thats just bc hes being friendly and just does NOT like poetry
•ill place this in like, late 90s and early 2000s, so there is that huge thing against goths and punks for being ‘weird’ and against god or something along those lines
•curlys pretty used to being targeted for being different for his punk style and such while pony isnt exactly used to that so i imagine that hes more protective while ponys trying to figure himself out in that regard
•some bands pony would b interested in is evanescence, the cure, and siouxsie and the banshees, london after midnight, of course there IS more but these r like more so his favs
•how pony found out about gothic bands was like, a song was playing in darrys car radio and darry didnt rlly like it so he changed it but the song was already stuck in ponys head
•he brought it up to curly but pony was just like ‘idk maybe itll pass’, it in fact DID not pass and later they was just chillin in curlys car and the song came back on the radio and pony was like ‘neuron activated’
•curly was personally not rlly into the song, but hey, ponys happy so its whatever
•personally i imagine that pony doesnt have a gothic STYLE more so he has a love for gothic songs and literature, yknow what i mean??? but maybe he does borrow some clothes from curly thats more on the gothic side or thrifts some clothes
•other than edgar allen poe, he does like phantom of the opera, frankenstein, dracula, carmilla, dr jekyll and mr hyde, also he would like ruby gloom (thank my gf for this hc)
•his art style is kinda influenced by those media actually
•as for what type of goth he is i could mostly see him being like a geek goth, but he is interested in the looks of victorian goths and gothabilly goths
IVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT PONY FOR TOO LONG NOW ON ABOUT CURLY
•tbh, not much to add for this guy, punk curly is literally just regular curly but more understanding of who he is and what he wants in the world yknow??
•think of curly but actually a lil more, idk thought provoking in his own curly way with a better understanding of the world
•MAY I INSERT MY HC OF CURLY HAVIN AN AFRO MOHAWK HERE🗣️🗣️
•he is from a haitian household tho and haitian moms especially tend to be more, religious and all that jazz, so while tim and angela get their ears yelled off for well being them, its especially happening to curly bc in his moms eyes hes “turning away from god” n what not being a “vagabon” as many haitian moms would put it
•he likes customizing his own clothes, he thrifts and gets a bunch of hand me downs so might as well make them look cooler
•hes a graffiti artist and hes acc pretty well known, everyone knows its him but they dont rlly say anything cause 1) hes curly shepard but 2) his work rlly isnt that bad actually
•i could totally see him liking green day and he does NOT like fall out boy but he does like a coulle of songs from them (much to his dismay
•hes picking up guitar (how he afforded it??? i payed for it lets just say that)
WHEN IT COMES TO THE GANG, they dont rlly get pony being goth, they support him of course, but they do tend to make fun of him a bit</33 but darry, soda, and johnny do try to understand him more, its rlly just two
ps anon my gf said she loves u for ur idea (shes goth, u got the goth stamp of approval)

Decided to share some OCs I made for my upcoming PopStar!AU fanfiction.
Thanks to @candysweetposts for making the Plus Size Candy Pack, which I used to make Tanya.
Top Row, from left to right:
Prunella Reyes: She/Her. Afro-Latina (Black/Dominican) 🇩🇴/🇺🇸. A childhood friend of Yvette, Prunella also works as her backing vocalist/dancer. Calm and collected, she often acts as the voice of reason whenever Yvette gets too overwhelmed. Prunella enjoys yoga, running on the beach, and strawberry lemonade. She's close friends with Roy and they often work out together. Nikki Ishida-Verino: She/Her. Japanese/Italian-American 🇯🇵/🇮🇹🇺🇸. Another childhood friend of Yvette who also works as her backing vocalist/dancer. Cheerful and optimistic, Nikki describes herself as the "rhyme" to Prunella's "reason". Nikki does what she can to keep Yvette cheerful whenever she's upset. Nikki's favorite color is red, so she wears it a lot. Nikki likes strawberries, which is ironic because she's actually allergic to them. She enjoys partying, drawing, tiramisu, and collecting candles and journals.
Bottom Row, from left to right:
Marnie Long: They/She. Nonbinary 💛🤍💜🖤. Chinese-American. 🇨🇳-🇺🇸 A music producer who works under Divine Media. They play many instruments professionally, such as the guitar(electric/acoustic), drums, and flute. She is a lesbian, a secret kept from her strict parents. They have a crush on Nikki but is uncertain if Nikki feels the same way. Marnie can be snarky and sarcastic but cares about others deep down. They tend to hold grudges, especially towards those that hurt the people she's close to. Tanya Beaufort: She/Her. French/Cameroonian 🇫🇷/🇨🇲. A singer-songwriter who is represented by Divine Media. She is a member of the 3-piece all girls' pop rock band WE ON 3. Tanya is the bass player and vocalist. Despite her shyness and soft-spoken voice, she has a "darker side" whenever she's performing. Tanya has a fascination with the Victorian/Regency eras, so she has a large collection of books themed around them. Many of her stage outfits reflect that interest. She is also fond of lolita fashion. She also has a thing for tattoos but is terrified to get one herself. That initially led to her developing a crush on Roy, along with his personality. As of now, Tanya is currently seeing someone outside of the entertainment industry.

Diversity in fantasy: How Disney could've done better in the live-action department
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've talked about it before, but what's one more time? Something I--and other people--have found grating is Disney's desire to remake all their films, thanks to the financial success of several of them. It's worth noting that Disney has struggled to corner the live-action market with original content, as they often flop critically and financially, and remakes (and in the case of "Pirates of the Caribbean," adaptations of their rides) seem to be their strongest bet. That said, Disney has shown both a desire to try something new while advertising the films as the same thing. One of these changes includes the racial/ethnic diversity of actors in the story. The most notable example is "The Little Mermaid," which not only uses a black actress to play Ariel (whose human form definitely looked white), and the setting of the film moved from a European land to the Caribbean, both of which sparked controversy to fans. For those who supported or didn't mind the change, there was the question of why Ariel was played by a black woman, but Eric was played by a white man, with the argument being made that Disney wanted diversity but wasn't fully ready to commit to it. Certain things like this made me realize that if Disney wanted to really to diversify, they could have, while telling original stories--well, not entirely original, but not remakes.
Tumblr media
The Little Mermaid told in the Caribbean--IDK if Disney would wanna get into the history of Afro-Caribbean people and how they arrived in the area due to colonization, but it'd be interesting to see diverse casting like Disney did with their 2023 film, prioritizing black, Indigenous, and French actors (not sure where the film takes place, but if I was making this, I'd probably put it in a French-speaking area over a Spanish one). And I've heard that many mermaid stories in the Caribbean are African-derived, so perhaps the king of the seas is one of many powers in the ocean and coming to the islands from Africa to safeguard his people. I'd also toy around with the idea that his wife was a human and that it ended badly, thus explaining his daughter's fascination with humans and why he so vehemently tries to curb her interests. Nothing specific planned, but it'd be amazing for Disney to make a 100% new take on the fairy tale unrelated to Ariel and co, with Lin-Manuel Miranda doing all the songs. And while I'd love for a more sea-like design for the mermaid over her semi-human appearance in Disney's version, it plays into the "she wanted to be human because of body dysmorphia" misconception. I would like her to have a unique, distinct design like Ariel's sisters did in the remake, though.
Tumblr media
2. Cinderella (or any fairy tale) set in Spain--To my understanding, 2015's "Cinderella" takes influence from the Victorian era for their unnamed kingdom, though a significant suitress for the prince's hand in marriage is Princess Chelina of Zaragoza, an obviously Spain-coded kingdom. Most often, Disney (and other American fantasy films/shows) use a generic European influence that may have some British hints to it due to historical connection to the land, making it unique and rare when other European influences are used, ie Scandinavia with "Frozen" and France with "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Beauty and the Beast." Every country is different, but a Southern European story would be unique among the fantasy genres in western media. Disney attempted this with "Wish" (though I don't know how culturally accurate it was), but the film itself was middling, regardless of cultural accuracy. I think that offering a Spanish take on Cinderella would've offered a unique perspective on fairy tales.
Tumblr media
3. Snow White in South America--Rachel Zegler's casting as the first Disney princess was met with similar reaction to Halle Bailey's, with everyone noting Rachel's complexion not being correct for the role, and even going as far as mentioning that due to being partially Latina (her father is Colombian if I recall; Colombia's a very diverse place, so I can't speak on his racial background) should've excluded her from the role. It wasn't helped by concerns that Zegler didn't actually appreciate or even like Disney's first film, but that's another thing entirely. In any case, Zegler mentioned how big Blanca Nieves is in Latin America, and it makes me wonder why Disney didn't do a Latin-American take on the tale. To my understanding, filming took place all the way from 2021 to 2024. In 2021, "Encanto" came out and was a big hit. While it'd be a monster for production, changing the setting early on to ride off of that success wouldn't be shocking. I don't know if Disney would want to do Colombia again so soon, but it's an idea that wouldn't feel out of place. I don't know if they'd want to do a story during Spanish colonization, or a fictional kingdom post-colonization during the 19th century.

The Veiled Lodger
Published in 1927 (and therefore only entering the public domain in the US this year), this is our first story from The Case-book of Sherlock Holmes, the fifth and final volume of the Holmes short stories.
It is also the penultimate published tale in the canon. It is also the shortest.
"The politician, the lighthouse and the trained cormorant" sounds like the ending of a Kenan and Kel episode.
Brixton is under three miles from the centre of London. In 1888, it became home to the first street in the UK lit by electricity, which was called Electric Avenue. That's where the song comes from.
Brixton became a predominantly Afro-Carribean community after the war as many of the passengers from Empire Windrush were temporarily housed in the Clapham South deep level shelter; the nearest Labour Exchange was in Brixton and they subsequently found accommodation in the local area.
Milkmen were delivering daily milk deliveries to houses from c.1860 as the railways allowed for it to be delivered still fresh from the countryside. Milk floats were among the first electric vehicles as they were a lot quieter for nighttime deliveries.
The use of lions in circuses is still a thing in some cases, sadly, although public opinion has progressively moved against it.
Allahabad is now the Indian city of Prayagraj, the judicial capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Sadly, I guess the poor lion was shot.
A discussion on Victorian attitudes to domestic violence can be found here. Had Eugenia Ronder been able to afford it, she would be have been able to obtain a divorce for adultery and cruelty at this time.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) was found in 1824 and has successfully lobbied over the decades for changes to UK law regarding animal treatment. The RSPCA brings private prosecutions, as any citizen can, against those who engage in cruelty to animals. It also has uniformed inspectors; these do not have police powers but work closely with the police.
Attitudes towards suicide progressively changed over the Victorian era, but it was still illegal. The practice of burying those who had killed themselves at a crossroads with a stake through their heart was banned in 1823, but it was commonplace for those who had killed themselves to be denied a full Christian burial, ending up in an unmarked grave. Church of England law on the matter wasn't changed until 2015, by which point the restriction was widely being ignored anyway.
There seems to be no specific prohibition in the 1896 Post Office Guide against sending prussic acid, aka hydrogen cyanide, in the post, but it is now definitely banned.
