(Thoughts on how the vampires sleep:

Dracula always has to have his coffin and it always has to have a bit of dirt in it from the grounds of his castle in Transylvania. Doesn’t matter where he is or who he’s with, that’s just how it has to be. Why? A couple of reasons. One, I headcanon him as being Autistic (I’m Autistic, too!) and we like our routines. That coffin with dirt in it has been part of Vlad’s routine for centuries; he never goes anywhere without it. Two, it’s a source of physical comfort. He loves small, dark spaces where he can hide away from the rest of the world and overstimulation. It’s his safe space. Three, it’s a source of emotional comfort. That coffin and the dirt within serve as a reminder of his home and how far he’s come, and it helps him feel a little less lost in the world. A little less alone.

Rafael, on the other hand, is a wanderer and a bard; he can’t very well carry a coffin on his back wherever he goes, and doesn’t really feel like hypnotizing his own personal moving crew. Generally, when dawn approaches, he takes refuge in an inn, makes sure to (temporarily) seal and/or cover the windows, flops into a nice, comfy bed, and is out cold in like two seconds (I am legit so jealous of this man….he’s nocturnal and STILL has a better sleeping schedule than me!). Failing that, if he’s nowhere near civilization, he’ll build a shelter large and sturdy enough to keep the sun off of him until dusk, but he’s not exactly enthusiastic about it.)

Picture Books for Goth Little Girls: a recommended reads list 💜✨🦇✨

Goth little girls are out there. They are an underserved audience in our libraries, schools, and homes. All they want is to be Wednesday Addams from the original black and white television show, and yet they are trapped in a technicolor world. Please. Encourage their developing sense of style, and donate a spooky picture book to a goth little girl today.

Here are my recommendations for picture books for bouncing baby goths:

Vampirina: Now a kids' television show, still a cute picture book series!

Monster books by Kelly Leigh Miller: Good lessons to learn with Bigfoot, Dracula, and more!

Gustavo the Shy Ghost: another series with a bunch of cute monster friends, and gorgeous artwork! Y hay libros en español 💜

Working Mummies: sadly out of print, but a storytime favorite of mine :(

Vlad the Rad: your child is never too young for skater lingo and spooky old schools!

If Your Babysitter is a Bruja: a gorgeous Spanglish book that doesn't isolate readers in either language. This one is technically cheating since it is explicitly a Halloween book but it's SO CUTE C'MON.

Vampenguin: A spooky summer read! A little identity mix-up on a trip to the zoo. :)

Parents can't resist gendering their child early on, but if there's a young kid in your life who needs a little spooky love, I try to encourage pursuing the interests the kids are actually showing rather than the ones parents wish they had. Boys are often expected to like weird, gross, or hyperspecific things, but parents seem to believe that girls can't like things beyond princesses and unicorns Peppa Pig, which may be all that she's ever been exposed to at all. If your daughter wants to raid the Halloween collection, let her! She'll appreciate that more than being funneled endlessly towards someone else's end goal for her future. You can try out lovely stories in silly/spooky aesthetic, get some story time in to share, and see an image of what a Mummy would look like as a dentist drilling Vampire teeth. The world is vast, and children under five are too young for Goth clubs, so let's compromise in the middle <3

you know video games, and you know vampires, yeah? whats the best vampire in a video game in your opinion?

Pardon me while I take advantage of the fact that "best" is a nebulous adjective.

If we take "best" to mean "the most closely fit to an archetypal vampire"...

I gotta go with the obvious answer: Castlevania's Alucard.

Isn't he a dhampir? Shouldn't it be Dracula?

Paradoxically, Alucard's condition as a dhampir makes him closer to an archetypal vampire than Dracula. Vampires are often used as an allegory for liminal identities - an AB person who can neither fit into group A because of their B traits nor fit into group B because of their A traits. Being only part vampire doubles down on this trope, and we occasionally see Alucard grapple with this, whereas Dracula is far past the point where he's struggling with his separation from humanity.

Besides, can Dracula do this?

Further, it might just be because we're playing as him, but we get to see Alucard doing a lot more vampire-things than we see Dracula doing. He's got bat form, he's got wolf form, he's even got the oft-forgot mist form and he sleeps in a coffin. We can presume that he inherited those things from his father, but Dracula's more likely to take on a war form more commonly associated with werewolves than that of the humble bat.

If we take "best" to mean "doing the best at vampirism"...

that would have to be Sebastian LaCroix of Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines fame.

Everyone else on this list plays nice- LaCroix treats people as playthings. As a character you are not meant to sympathize with, he's allowed to embrace the cutthroat-but-genteel nature of a vampire that protagonists can't. He's afforded the luxury of being a monster and that is a luxury he will indulge. Even though we don't see him drinking blood or flouncing around in a cape, he goes so overboard being a manipulative little leech that he has to take the top spot.

He's also the only one here to do the most vampiric thing of all - being undone by one's thirst.

If we take "best" to mean "my favorite, vampiric metrics be damned"...

I'd be remiss not to mention Valvatorez, best (and only?) vampire in the Disgaea series.

As one might expect from the Disgaea IP, he's a bit of a trope inversion; he's sworn off blood and he's only interested in power if it can be used to help those under his rule, but that's what makes him so lovable! The only king I stan is one who properly understands noblesse oblige. Instead of being the usual "powerful friend with a tragic cost", he's unflaggingly the friend who wants to make YOU powerful with the only drawback of probably having sardine breath. On all thematic points, he fails to live up to vampiric standards, but that reflects poorly on the standards, not on him. In a just world, all vampires would use their age as a source of wisdom to be shared and their strength as a means of helping up friends in need.

Honorable mention: myotismon in many of the Digimon games. Usually, he's a perfectly stand-up guy who just happens to have An Aesthetic that gives everyone the wrong idea and gets him in trouble.
