Anyway, Lan Wangji is autistic, Wei Wuxian has ADHD, both put the "divergent" in "neurodivergent", and this plays a part into why they're so drawn to each other and can understand each other so well. No, I will not be elaborating.

Wait. His perfect memory is canonically (well, Word of God) what leads to his downfall? This is blowing my mind. Wei Wuxian's ADHD horrible memory keeps him good??? I don't think I've ever seen a piece of media where being forgetful is framed as a good thing before. That's amazing, thank you MXTX for this food.
headcanon: JGY does not actually fully remember what happened on the day that his father kicked him down the Koi Tower steps
justification: he fell down a LOT of steps, there’s a pretty decent chance he hit his head, which could have messed up some of his memories of the day. he also could possibility have selective amnesia around that day due to his mind trying to block out what was no doubt a severe physical and psychological trauma.
there’s also the fact that he chases after his father’s love for so long - if he did not remember the specifics of what was said and what exactly happened that led to him being kicked down the stairs, it would be much easier for him in his mind to justify his father’s behaviour. maybe it wasn’t his father who kicked him, maybe it was a servant. maybe he himself accidentally said something that provoked his father. maybe it wasn’t his father at all but jin-furen who ordered it!
I also just think that it’s narratively [chef kiss] that the guy with the incredible memory - that (according to the author) is what causes his fall to darkness because he is incapable of forgetting all the abuse he has suffered and everyone who has wronged him - cannot actually properly remember the very moment that started it all

i'm so deep in my belief that lan wangji is autistic and wei wuxian has adhd that i forget it's not canon so when i see posts talking about it i'm always like "yeah??? this isn't new information???" and then i realise to some people it is new information and it is a new way of looking at them.

G, 1k, Wangxian
Summary: When their routine is interrupted, Wei Ying gets himself and Lan Zhan ready for bed. Kay's comments: This story was so sweet and made me feel all warm and mushy inside T_T Just a short storty of Wei Ying taking care of Lan Zhan after an unspecified rough day, taking him through their routine and tucking him in. Every word and every action is filled with so much love, my heart has grown three sizes. Excerpt: Wei Ying toes off his shoes, changes into his house slippers, and pours himself a glass of water when he comes home. While the water filter's refilling, he washes his hands at the kitchen sink. This is all routine: Lan Zhan's routine, not his, which Wei Ying took and made his and which has the double effect of keeping him hydrated and keeping him closer to his partner. He's home late tonight, his backpack filled with books from the library where he's abandoned it on the sofa. Wei Ying thinks that, notes it, and walks past the backpack on his way to the bathroom. He notes it again on the way back to get more water and forgets it again. He has a reason this time: the lights are on. The lights are usually on. He gets home later than Lan Zhan on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Lan Zhan is usually asleep, waiting for him in bed. He's always asleep, and he always curls against Wei Ying when slides into bed. Even if he's sleeping on his back. Even if Wei Ying is going to scroll on his phone instead of rest. But now the lights are on in the bedroom too, so Wei Ying goes. The backpack, he thinks—he'll grab the backpack later.
pov wei wuxian, modern setting, modern no powers, autistic lan wangji, wei wuxian has adhd, neurodivergency, caretaking, hurt/comfort, routine, soft lan wangji/wei wuxian, short & sweet

i really really really love the idea of wei wuxian revolutionizing modern cultivation over breakfast and conceptualizing these different theories simultaneously because the adhd brain has no brakes and the only reason it took him a decade to publish all these ideas was because he could not stick to a single train of thought long enough to finish (verbalizing) it, let alone put it down on paper coherently.
the only reason he even got to publishing them eventually (and enrolling to cultivation theory grad program to get on that track) was because one morning, his undergrad thesis advisor, lan qiren, finally got fed up and sat him down for an early morning progress check-in because it was midterm season and wei wuxian still hadn't decided on a topic.
wei wuxian, fueled by an unhealthy amount of redbull and three all-nighters, finally word vomits all his 'convoluted' ideas which he'd thought were uselessly obvious and redundant (because he's gone over these like a bajillion times, it's very plain-as-day to him, so he probably just hasn't read the articles that say these exact things).
lan qiren, teacup frozen halfway to his mouth: ...first of all, i only understood half of how you got to these conclusions, which only means they are indeed too convoluted and will need to be pared down; secondly: you have never mentioned any of these ideas before. why.
wei wuxian: oh. haven't i? oh well, i just thought, xyz, because, obviously, abcde. which is really what the 2 centuries old law on ghjkl was alluding to, right? and so, logically, xyz.
lan qiren: [mind blown, screaming, good gods this is the same child who's always tardy and spent freshman year pulling on the metaphorical pigtails of my straight-laced nephew?!?!??!??!?!] ..again, why...how have you never even spoken or submitted these ideas?
wei wuxian: because!!! they're so obvious!! surely, it's been published somewhere already? i can't be the only one to connect these dots, surely??
lan qiren: incredibly, you are. no one else has even thought to question tradition nor pursued more thoughts on the law of ghjkl, with half as much...sound arguments as you seem to have. in the past century, the focus of modern cultivation has tended towards practical uses and tools, some fine-tuning, perhaps. not entirely new theories.
wei wuxian: huh....
lan qiren, sighing, feeling a migraine: your problem with your thesis is not a lack of focus or ingenuity, but likely to be more a lack of recent, evidentiary sources. you will need to become very familiar with the university archives and dig deep for sources that will back up every argument you make.
he jots down notes on a paper. "you will also need to strictly adhere to the structure and methodology of these articles, especially given how radical your thesis will be. if you are diligent enough, you may just be able to submit your thesis without too much of a delay." he slides the list of materials to a gaping wei wuxian. "depending on your output then, we can discuss the possibility of submitting this for peer review."
"peer review." wei wuxian repeats. "as in, that thing where some uppity committee of old coots put their stamp of approval for it to become the reading materials of undergrads like me. you're joking."
lan qiren chooses to ignore the sentiment about peer review committees being uppity old coots, especially considering how he can't completely deny it on account of some of his colleagues, but also as a member said peer review committee, he isn't exactly pleased about being lumped in the same category.
wei wuxian backtracks at his unamused look. "right, you're not joking, of course you're not." he slowly inches the list towards himself. "right, yes, i guess i'll uh, get to it then. ok bye."
----
idk, just, waves hand at wei wuxian candidly explaining new modern cultivation theories over cheerios at 2 in the afternoon to lwj who's trying to help him structure his grad thesis, getting mind blow dick hard at how this messy genius who's talking with his mouth full of half eaten cereal is the object of his affection....
wwx: --oh, oops, your highlighter fell
lwj: mn
wwx: ...aren't you gonna get that?
lwj: it's fine; i'll pick it up later. finish your thought.
wwx: right... i'll pick it up for you!
lwj, fighting for his life, trying to think unsexy thoughts: NO! sit. finish your meal, and then your thought.

Do you know this (noncanon) ADHD character?
Tumblr media
Evidence below the cut!
First submitter said:
Wei Wuxian is an absolute genius who chatters like mad about anything on his mind, flits from topic to topic, gets kicked out of class for being disruptive and talking about (forbidden) ideas that just occurred to him, doodles and gossips and slumps in his seat in class because he's bored, and invents best under pressure.
A second submitter linked to this post and this other post and said:
While it isn’t outright stated, the novel he’s from is set in a historical Chinese setting, so it wouldn’t make sense to anyway. As for why I think he is, we see him consistently butt heads with his teachers due to his inability to be still and quiet in class and the fact that he often answers questions in unorthodox ways. He’s pretty much always moving in someway, something which is carried over into the novels live action and donghua adaptations. wei wuxian is described as a genius who could do pretty much anything if he applied himself and did what he was supposed to (and haven’t we all seen that on report cards, or in parent teacher interviews?) when he focuses on a project (or like. 10 at once) he tends to lock himself away and forget to eat or sleep properly. His workspace is described as cluttered and unorganised to everyone else, but wei wuxian is perfectly fine working in it- he knows where everything is, at least. He also has a terrible memory, which could also be explained by the general terribleness of everything happening, but is portrayed in a way I personally felt was very ADHD-esque, especially with the other things I described. He will pretty much forget anything unless he has it in writing or is otherwise reminded, yet somehow remembered a tune his friend sung to him when he was delirious, injured and half conscious 13 years later. That probably isn’t everything, but I can’t think of anything else rn
