Have you guys noticed that trend in shortform content lately where people will say something in the video and then put something else in the subtitles for comedic effect? Yeah?
Fuck that.
I have an audio processing disorder and I need subtitles for accessibility reasons, so do hard of hearing and deaf people and anyone else who needs them.
They’re supposed to be an accurate representation of what’s being said in the video.
Say it with me folks.
Disabled people deserve the same experience of content as everyone else.

Audio processing disorders aren't just delayed processing. Sometimes it's just not comprehending what the person said at all.

fanface for your free ableist blocklist. Claims that "less than 1% of disabled people you see on the internet are really disabled, the rest are all faking it". Gets mad when you point out that this is just blatant ableism.

I’m watching a YouTube vid on the background of Humane and the Ai Pin. (hi Krazy Ken!)
It brought up an anecdote from one of the AI Pin’s creators, about seeing a family of 5 at a restaurant and how all of them were on smart phones, “not engaging with each other.”
And I thought back to my most recent family dinner out, and many more in the past.
Where my parents and brother understand that when I pull out my phone and start up sudoku or solitaire, it’s because my sensory processing sensitivity has been officially overwhelmed by the noise around us and I’m defensively distracting myself.
It never occurred to be before that people may be judging me, 43 years old and quiet with my head down over a phone while the other three members of my family are talking.
When in reality, I’m doing what I have found is the best way (in addition to my earplugs) to keep engaged with them - because the alternative to using my phone is to leave.
Doing a lightweight mental stim - sudoku or solitaire- to focus my brain away from the overwhelming environment of a restaurant.
Which allows me to better keep track of the three people I care about talking, instead of all the metal on ceramic and ice in glass clanging around me.
I definitely get the point of the original anecdote, about how people become consumed by the information (usually social media) on our smart phones and neglect the personal connections immediately with them.
But sitting around a meal table - especially in public - isn’t the only place interpersonal connections with present people can happen.
It definitely isn’t always the best one.
My family’s best convos happen in the vehicle to and from the restaurant, btw.

neurotypicals are so weird. like yeah im sorry that our voices and the scraping of cutlery are physically painful to you but unfortunately its rude to wear headphones at the table :/ yeah i know you can still hear us but it looks like you cant which is rude. its like you're blocking us out. why are you still pressing the issue. why are you being so difficult just take the headphones off before i take them off for you. why cant you just exhibit basic human decency. what do you mean im being ableist.
actually i said neurotypicals bc this post is specifically about spd/autism (both neurological disabilities) but ive never met a single disabled person who insisted i remove a sensory aid out of this all-important need for good manners. its too loud and it hurts. my pain is more important than these ridiculous, made-up social rules. stop clutching your pearls when an autistic person wears headphones to dinner. you're being rude to us.

HAPPY MISOPHONIA VISIBILITY DAY!!!
Someone that had misophonia is sensitive to certain sounds, and hearing those sounds cause a severe reaction, usually intense anxiety or anger. I personally get panic attacks and either shut down or become angry. Common triggers are often repetitive sounds like chewing, typing, tapping, footsteps, and many more.
(Keep reading for more info on misophonia!)
Interesting note: Other mental disorders, namely anxiety disorders, cause problems in the parasocial nervous system. This nervous system is in charge of keeping people from danger, so it’s in charge of the “what if”s. When misophonia is triggered, it causes distress in the central nervous system! So misophonia causes physical pain!
There is no way to ignore it, no way to cure it, and there is a severe lack of research on it. There are only coping mechanisms like headphones and noise machines. Oh, and please note that you cannot “get used” to the triggers, so exposure therapy does not work. In fact, being exposed to the triggers makes it worse! So please, if anyone asks you to stop chewing or doing a noise so loud, at least try to be understanding.
Happy misophonia visibility day!!!

As somebody with audio processing difficulties, I hate when neurotypical people act like I’m being stupid or difficult when I ask them to repeat something. Seriously, how hard is it to just say something again? Alternatively (and I’ve told people this, most either don’t remember or don’t care) you can just make sure you have my attention before telling me something or asking me a question, then you can usually skip repeating yourself.

i'm watching 25 ji Akasaka de and the GAGA SUBS ARE SO HORRENDOUS I UNDERSTAND WHY PPL COMPLAIN NOW.... the number of (often critical!) lines completely untranslated, lines translated into the wrong tense, and basic shit like translating 風呂 as “shower” when it’s… not really used to refer to showers right? and also you can SEE HIM TAKING A BATH.
i’m neither fluent nor a translator so I don’t often get irritated by poor subs but wow. the untranslated lines is what’s really getting to me. Leaving out Hayama-san calling Shirasaki-san’s large bed エロイ is a crime, actually.
