Have you guys noticed that trend in shortform content lately where people will say something in the video and then put something else in the subtitles for comedic effect? Yeah?
Fuck that.
I have an audio processing disorder and I need subtitles for accessibility reasons, so do hard of hearing and deaf people and anyone else who needs them.
They’re supposed to be an accurate representation of what’s being said in the video.
Say it with me folks.
Disabled people deserve the same experience of content as everyone else.

hi! hope this is an alright question to ask, but i really really wanted to start adding IDs to my posts and stuff! im worried my IDs that ive done before are too long and detailed, so do you have any tips for ID writing? thank you in advance if you answer this!! =^.^=
QUESTIONS OF LOVE AND JOY
Tbh the biggest bit of advice I can give to anyone wanting to write IDs is that literally any ID is better than no ID even if you think it's too long. Genuinely just give it a shot and the more you do it the more you'll get a feel for it, just like any other skill!
If it's my own post, I start by identifying the type of image ("a screenshot of", "fanart of", "original character art of"), then identify the subject, then a quick verb or adjective about the subject. So
[ID: (image type) of (subject). (Subject) is (adjective and/or verb). End ID]
Yoinking my pfp: [ID: a PNG (image type) of a sticker sheet (subject) of holographic stars, moons and suns (adjective!). End ID]
Everyone who uses IDs will have different preferences for them. U could ask 20 people who require IDs for images about them and get 20 different answers. AFAIK the general consensus is that many prefer brief IDs because screen readers take yonks to read it out? But you do want to make sure you don't miss out relevant context.
IME the most accessible thing to do is write one directly under the original post (NO read more) and in plain text. small text (small text) or coloured text (coloured text) might or might not be picked up by screen readers but is gonna be difficult to read for many people with low vision, which is the main demographic IDs are used for.
uhh what else. There's a difference between an ID (image description under the post) and ALT text (embedded in the html of the image) and there's no single agreement on which is better (see paragraph 2) but sometimes a screen reader will skip the whole post if there's an image with no ALT text. Good practice is to put a very brief (1-2 sentences) in ALT text and the fuller ID under the post, like how my mutual's done it here.
There's more i could probably say but this is quite long whoops so linking some more posts about them for you here, here, here and here!
Also also if you want to make a huge difference to accessibility on your blog you can search through the notes of a post to see if there's already one (copy and paste it to your version if you want a different reblog chain! the writer won't mind!) and tag image posts with no ID as #undescribed or equivalent.

i think online grocery/food delivery services need to put way more info on their sites. in my experience it's often missing nutrition/ingredient information, which is crucial for so many folks, especially folks who can't go to these places in person. if we can go in a grocery store and read a label, or go to a restaurant and look at a menu, we deserve an equivalent experience online

Artists, please put your warnings for flashing lights/colours BEFORE the video. Tumblr let's you choose which comes first, it's not helping anyone if you see the flashing light before the warning about them, and you have to have the flashing lights on your screen to be able to read said warning about the lights they've already seen.
It doesn't affect me, but this is legitimately dangerous to some folks, some of whom are probably in your audience if you've got a decent sized following here. If a flashing video makes them ill, triggers a sezuire, or worse (it can and does kill people), they probably aren't going to hang around and tell you - and if they do, they're doing it at risk to themselves. You shouldn't expect them to.
Ideally, the best and safest way to post this kind of content (at least here) is to put the warning at the top, a screenshot/still frame of the video underneath (so people can still see your awesome art while mindlessly scrolling/browsing) And put the actual video after a cut/read more button. But if you're not going to do that, at least put the warning first!
I know it's hard getting traction as an artist online, people have short attention spans and we're told to put the most attention-grabbing stuff first. I know how much it sucks to work on something for hours/days/weeks/months and it gets nothing, so you want to do everything you can to give your work a fighting chance in a sea of content. But getting your work to a few extra eyes is not worth hurting people.

ironically, Additude magazine is pretty overwhelming to read. you'd think an online resource about Distractablilty Disorder(TM) would know better than to crowd their articles with ads.
here's what it should look like (after zapping it with uBlock Origin):
Tumblr media
instead, heres what it currently looks like:

thats bad accessibility and web design... what happened to "know your audience"?

"ID copied from alt text:"
alt text is where image IDs are meant to live! it literally stands for "alternative text", i.e. the text that is displayed as an alternative if the image cannot be displayed such as for a screenreader!
from wikipedia:
"The alt attribute is used to increase accessibility and user friendliness, including for blind internet users who rely on special software for web browsing."
the alt text is where you should be putting image descriptions! the only reason they should be in the main body is if the alt text is inaccessible (e.g. you're not the OP or the website doesn't support alt text)

If you really want something to be read by everyone, you have to make it accessible. I can't read your pinned if it has a flashing warning (or if it has flashing lights/images that are not warned for).

Long discord blacklists are inaccessible and unethical
(note: all examples are either my own previous triggers unless stated otherwise)
Following a conversation in a discord I'm in, I wanted to make this post. This isn't mocking the concept of hyperspecific triggers, not is it saying that the concept of blacklists is inherently bad. However I think that making a long blacklist of peoples hyperspecific triggers, then insisting that people not only remember them but also either spoiler them or not mention them at all, is inaccessible and unethical.
I understand how they come about. You start with a general blacklist, of intense topics things like suicide or self harm or rape, and maybe a couple discourse topics you're sick of hearing about. Then someone asks if you can add a trigger on- a relatively common one. So you do. And then someone else asks, and someone else, and before you know it your blacklist is half a mile long and you can't mention marshmallows without a trigger warning and spoiler.
This is inaccessible.
If there's a long list, it'd likely be difficult to remember for anyone. Especially if people have memory issues- something that's very common with multiple disabilities, and ironically, many of the same disabilities or mental illnesses that cause these triggers in the first place. If you have a space full of people with disabilities or mental illnesses that cause memory issues, it's not particularly possible to expect that blacklist to be kept to. But if you do, and you warn or even ban people who don't adhere to the blacklist, you create a space that's hostile to disabled people.
Additionally, I've seen or been made aware of servers that don't seem to have any reasonable kind of limit for the blacklist. Servers that allow you to add prosthetic limbs to the blacklist. Limb differences. Mention of chronic pain. Facial differences. Servers that make disabled people trigger warn their own existence. That's not okay.
It's also unethical. Telling people that their triggers are on a list, so they'll be safe from them in that server, creates a false sense of security. Then if someone does accidentally forget that they're not meant to mention deodorant without a trigger warning? That false sense of security shatters. They thought they were safe in that server, but they aren't. They're not actually fully safe from their triggers anywhere really- it's impossible to guarantee that they won't be able to come into contact with their triggers.
I've had it happen in real life. Teachers told me they'd made everyone stop spraying deodorant in the PE changing rooms. I thought I was safe there. But people forgot and still sprayed, and it was worse than if I'd have know it was a risk. It meant my paranoia and feelings of not being safe anywhere got worse.
And yet these servers try and claim that the blacklist will keep them safe.
A blacklist that's gotten so long, it's almost impossible to remember.
A blacklist that has everything on it from photos of marshmallows to people's names (oh, and if that's your name? You have to go by an alias in that server) to F4 racing.
A blacklist that doesn't keep anyone safe.
It's not accessible and it's not ethical.

correction: israel has killed 15 palestinians in rafah in the evening of february 11. they’ve killed many more in rafah since february started. the death toll is around 400, with 76 killed today, monday feb 12. the iof destroyed khan yunis, the place where gazan refugees from the north were fleeing, and now the iof is attacking and murdering civilians in the last southern city.
do not look away from what the israeli colonizers have done to khan yunis and what they will do to rafah as long as world leaders across the globe twiddle their thumb and america continues to sink billions into this genocide.
just two days ago, the iof snipers killed a doctor in the middle of a surgery in a khan yunis hospital. there is a horrifying video of an old man, shot and crawling into the reception of said hospital, and no one is able to drag him away from the windows where snipers keep shooting at them. this is what our tax money is funding. this is what our leaders are encouraging. the entire world should be dying of shame and disgust, most especially the west, giddily supporting and paying for the nth genocide of brown indigenous people, and the greedy, soulless monsters of the uae and saudi arabia.

grabbing myself by the scruff of the neck and forcing myself to at least skim read a longform post or piece of text that i just scrolled past despite thinking it sounded interesting because it's "too long" i will NOT contribute to my own attention deficiency and limit my general knowledge and critical thinking skills by needing information spoonfed to me in bitesize pieces to be able to digest it i will NOT

Thanks for description!
The subtitles of the new Puss in Boots are SO BAD. Literally every single instance of anyone saying anything in Spanish, even just a single word, is replaced with [speaking Spanish].
Tumblr media
There is a character who throughout most of the movie is known as Perro or Perrito and even that gets replaced with [speaking Spanish]. So a deaf person watching this movie would have NO IDEA what the other characters were calling him!! It’s ridiculous.
Anyway here’s an srt file with accurate Spanish that I made. Enjoy.

"There should be security cameras inside of classrooms." Eh, sure. We have them in the hallways and cafeteria. Maybe not my first choice for how to spend tax dollars, but whatever. Then if an issue arises, the footage could be pulled on request and reviewed.
"There should be security cameras with a live stream inside classrooms that parents can view whenever they want to keep their kids safe." Are you insane. Are you absolutely out of your mind. Even assuming that this theoretical live stream would be limited to just the parents of children who have a class in that specific room (not the whole school)....you want dozens of strangers (in elementary) or hundreds of strangers (secondary) to be able to have a live stream of *your child* at school? You can't see a single possible safety or privacy issue that could arise from that situation?
