Oh God I was really hoping the backstory that was leaked for Billy was fake... just heard about the new episode and it turns out it wasn't. why would they choose this over adoption or reincarnation-
It's bad! I really feel like the M C U goes out of its way to interpret these characters in bad faith and come up with the worst possible versions of their stories. I've said this before, but everything about Wanda's origins and the nature of her power seems designed to make her an objectively worse person who is more directly responsible for causing harm than her comics counterpart, but is also weirdly set on punishing her for existing and having trauma. She's simultaneously more doomed by the narrative, and infinitely less deserving of redemption.
With Billy, they took a situation that, while complex and, at times, difficult to parse, is ultimately miraculous and joyful, and they made it just.... incredibly grim. There is no real distinction between Billy Maximoff and Billy Kaplan in the comics-- they're the same person, given a second chance at life and the great fortune to reconnect with his original family, in a way that doesn't invalidate or erase the second. And, again, I want to emphasize that when YA and CC were written, Wanda had Jewish heritage, so I don't think there needs to be any awkwardness in the transfer between the Maximoff and Kaplan families, and the text never does anything to imply that Billy's cultural upbringing is any less valid, or any less central to his character after his origins are revealed.
Here, they created a false dichotomy between the two characters, killed one them off, and made the other into a body-snatcher. That is so much darker, and so much more tragic for the Kaplans-- and it creates uncomfortable questions about their relationship, and Billy's identity, that I don't think can ever be neatly resolved. I will say that, thus far, I don't think the show explicitly disavows "William's" heritage, or writes off Billy's relationship with the Kaplans, the way some people are reporting. He doesn't actually remember his life before the switch, so it's not a total takeover, and at points, the episode seems to imply that he's somehow both, and neither-- a new gestalt.
But I don't trust these writers to execute that concept with integrity, or even consistency. In WV and MoM, Wanda's motives, sense of self, and relationship to her powers repeatedly change at the drop of a dime, and we're seeing the same thing, here, with the abrupt change that takes place when Billy reveals his identity. The shift in personality, escalation of power, and the vague implication that he's been masterminding this whole excursion makes no sense with the established timeline-- this is all happening within 24 hours of him even learning that Wanda had kids, let alone that he might be one of them, not to mention hearing about both Agatha the Witches Road for the first time. And up until that point, he really was just an earnest kid. The heel-turn feels silly and juvenile, and the needle drop at the end of episode #5 underscores that a little too perfectly-- his "bad guy" act is just as ill-fitting and unsubstantiated as the Eilish's edgy, wannabe-thug aesthetics.
Obviously, the most important issue here is not the quality of writing, but where this character falls into the spectrum of whitewashing and erasure. The fact that Locke is not Jewish but, before the switch, is playing a Jewish character-- and, specifically trespassing on prayer and religious ceremonies-- is a problem. I've seen a lot of different opinions expressed by a lot of different people within the community about who can or can't play Jewish characters, but I think we can all agree that this is worth criticizing, especially given the larger context of repeated erasure and historical distortion against Jewish and Roma people in this franchise.
But I also want to emphasize that, because of what was done to Wanda, and the franchise's insistence on conducting blatant anti-Romani racism, there was never going to be a truly authentic or acceptable version of this character. Now matter how they cast the role, a significant part of his background had already been erased, and he was already saddled with significant racist baggage. I am very, very tired of white people and Young Avengers fans overlooking that fact.
#and I think I've said this before but I want to reiterate that I actually would have been okay with Billy and Tommy being played by#white jewish actors IF Wanda & Pietro had been correctly cast and written with authenticity and sensitivity.#Because I understand that getting 4+ actors who all perfectly match each character's compound identities is a very tall order! If these#different background had all been represented authentically and in a way that celebrates intersection (rather than denying it and throwing#other minorities under the bus the way so much of this fandom loves to do) I think a little flexibility would be just fine.#What we actually got is not fine. But it was never going to be-- this character was doomed from the start and I don't understand what kind#of hope you all were holding onto here.#billy kaplan#wiccan

so its like they have the same mannerisms when they talk and move + the same twitchy defensive anger + the same cadence of voice + they enjoy similar hobbies + they are leavers in the dead of night (metaphorical) when they get scared + something something sins of the father. and jess had never ever met his father til he was 18. hm. however
like this is as on the nose as it gets. surly + angry + uncomfortable in kooky social situations + incapable of displaying affection unless its in weird convoluted awkward ways (the chuppah. the diner care package) + trying really hard at loving and being kind without it feeling like skinning themselves alive
#gilmore girls#jess mariano#jimmy mariano#luke danes#considering how little other non gilmore characters development get this is like if asp spent one episode dissecting every single thing#jess has ever said done thought ever in his whole entire life. lane paris sookie get little to no depth in comparison#which is to say that jess (& luke) are just as integral to the narrative bc they mirror rory & lorelai where rory is luke & jess is lorelai#also the actor for jimmy is so perfectly cast (and hot sorry excuse me!!!)

think one of my gripes around stage to movie adaptations is that the discussion around roles turns competitive in nature as only one person can portray a role on screen compared to the stage where multiple people can play a role so the community feels much more appreciative of the variety of portrayals and as a result the discussion feels less hostile
#does this make sense ???????#its an unfortunate byproduct of adapting across mediums </3#like i am so sick of hearing things like ‘no one else could have played this role’#or ‘[person who auditioned] would never play this role as perfectly’#bc im like ??? they could play it just as well it would just be different bc all portrayals are gonna be different#it just depends on the director and the vision they have#but with the stage while you have some og cast purists there seems to be more appreciation for differences between actors

Me normally: Let people love what they love
Me, after a Test Match Special commentator expresses their belief that the new All Creatures Great and Small is somehow "better" than the 1978 version: This is pure insanity and TMS can no longer be trusted on anything, how can they even be trusted to know about cricket, do they have no TASTE
#Look it's fine that this show exists and people will watch it and like it and that's ok maybe it's just not for me#But that was like a statement purely designed to piss me off#There were lots of issues with the 1978 adaptation! I still vastly preferred the books any day!#And I actually initially had high hopes for the new one because they at least cast a Scot (albeit a Highlander not a Clydesider) as James#And the actors at least looked a little bit younger than Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy#And thank god Helen actually sounds like she's a farmer's daughter and doesn't speak RP!#But from the half hour I've seen of it I've had to write off this new adaptation#For two major reasons#First of all there's Siegfried#Siegfried is one of the key central aspects of the vibe of the books and therefore key to any adaptation#Robert Hardy was too short and too old for the part but he lived and breathed the character#The twinkle in the eye bouncing off the walls and in and out of rooms followed by half a dozen dogs utterly full of life even when angry#But this new Siegfried is just sort of... Eeyore-esque; he comes into a room and you can see the flowers droop and the set turn grey#Siegfried was angry Siegfried was happy and the historical character he was based on was no stranger to melancholy#Since Donald Sinclair did commit suicide or rather self-euthanasia after Alf Wight and his own wife Audrey died#But this slow grumbly figure in the new adaptation is not Siegfried Farnon- the book character didn't grumble more often he exploded#And why did the adaptation give him a dead wife that's so weird? What could that possibly add to the source material?#And this brings me onto my second problem which is to do with women and age#Firstly I have no idea why they aged down Mrs Hall or at least made her look younger than a woman her age would have back then#But what really drove me mad was when Heriot goes out to see some old woman hill farmer in the episode I saw#And this woman is far too clean and young-looking and you can see that she's wearing 'natural' look make-up#And a perfect set of clothes that looked like they were straight out of the House of Bruar autumn collection catalogue#Say what you like about the 1978 adaptation but old women looked like old women regardless of whether or not they wore make-up#It may be that the better quality of television screens means that the 'natural look' shows up on screen more clearly than it would have#But natural look make-up was not really a thing in the 1930s and for old women Yorkshire hill farmers I doubt they'd have much on at all#They just don't seem to be capable of allowing people to look old and wrinkled and real or have bad teeth or unattractive clothes#And everything is far too tidy- everybody looks far too perfectly country and quaint#Anyway the moral of this story is of course that I always recommend reading the books because they're much better#than any tv adaptation; but if forced to choose at least the 1970s one felt real and yet didn't have to be grim either#Ok that's my rant over please do feel free to enjoy the show I just got annoyed because the opinion was expressed on TMS

lowkey turning into a wot books purist, but I still have so much love in my heart for the show, and I'm hopeful that s3 is going to shift the focus onto the actual main characters (as much as I love moiraine)
#wheel of time#they softened the emond's field gang A LOT#I kind of miss their flaws but its whatever#I can live with it bc the actors are perfectly cast

i understand the impulse to be nice to new cast members and give them a chance to find their voice and find writers who get it and figure out how to translate what they're good at into the show's format etc etc but sometimes i do think we need to be haters a little bit.
#all of that to say. j*ne w*ckline is perfectly fine in her own update bits. the awkward thing is just her style. However.#she hasn't figured out how to translate that into a sketch comedy ensemble so she just brings down any sketch she's in#a sketch will be going so well and then she comes in eyes glued to the cue cards and talks so fast and with such bizarre intonation#that i wish EYE had the cue cards so i could understand what the line was. sorry!!!!#other cast members have done the awkward thing (kyle mooney my beloved) but it just fit better with the rest of the cast idk#sometimes watching jane feels like watching an actor pretending to be a bad actor ykwim.#i hate that all the cast members i have (i think) valid criticisms of are women. that sucks so much.#i want to support women in comedy i really do but j*ne w*ckline and chl*e f*neman are making that very difficult for me lmao#idk maybe if they could be funnier. idk.#snl

Just realized that saide sink, maya hawke and natalia dyer are all 4 years of apart in age (21, 25 and 29 years old) and watching stranger things i just feek like... that... that doesn't sound right
#my brain has no trouble processing the fact that the ''''''''''''older teens'''''''''''' actors are like 30#but the fact that some of them are like 6 years apart in age (joe keery is like 31) has me like oof#esp when one of them is like perfectly like halfway there like#ok i looked it up and it seems like maya hawke is the youngest actor out of the older teen cast#y'know what this makes me think about is#idk what to call it. actor-accurate age differences AU#18yo Robin. 22yo Nancy. 14yo Max. 24yo Steve. idk where i'm going with this it sounded more interesting in my head

im generally not a fan of the idea of any of the early 2000s sonic games being remastered because i think those games not having the most updated looking graphics or the best voice acting ever is part of the charm i dont want them to be changed to look and sound exactly like every other sonic game thats come out in the past 14 years
#leave sonic heroes ALONEEEE#also when it comes to character voices i tend to prefer the voices from either back then or from the 4kids cast#we do not need those older games with perfectly good voice casts being downgraded like that come on#(no hate to the current cast though theyre just doing their jobs and i do like a lot of the voices. most just arent my favorite)#though when they remastered colors they didnt re record the voice acting#and when they made an animated short to go along with it they brought back tails' va from back then#so maybe they would try to avoid recasting everybody#some recasts would be unavoidable though if they tried to record any new stuff for it#because for colors only 1 voice actor was different from the current cast but for heroes its 13 different characters#and also eggmans va from back then died unfortunately. and tails and charmy were voiced by actual kids who are much older now#but its mostly just a few specific performances that i dont want recorded over by newer voices i like a lot less#i dont know why they have to remaster the 3d games in order to re release them anyway ..#why cant you just make a port with minimal changes#again this is assuming that the sonic heroes remaster rumors are even true . which im assuming theyre not im just talking hypothetically

i’m gonna get shafted for saying this on here but i’m so mad at the rwrb script for gutting the book so needlessly; of course a book-to-film adaptation can never be 1:1 but you gotta get the important stuff in there for the characters to make sense and the story to feel satisfying even if you need to shift and change things to suit a different medium
#the thing is i did enjoy the film for the most part#i promise i’m not a psycho book purist#but no one’s mentioning film alex not even talking to henry before publicly confirming their relationship in a white house press conference#also the not-divorced parents#and bea suddenly being the youngest and not henry#and the actors being so perfectly cast just makes the disappointment worse#red white and royal blue#red white and royal blue movie#rwrb#rwrb movie#the goosiest lucyverse
