We killed Mark Lewisohn

I've thought a bit about writing something on how @wingsoverlagos and I killed Mark Lewisohn... because we did, but this is tumblr so of course I'll just randomly post something from my phone.

It was hell, but we did bury him. The hate I got in the month after my last two posts was unbelievable. I shut everything out.

But of course I was getting Mark Lewisohn Google alerts. I was investigating him, so of course I did. Every week. And they all looked the same. Six or so big papers quoting him for whatever Beatles' crap they had going on that week, then some combo of appearances and old book stuff would shuffle towards the top.

But after the posts on his accuracy that all changed.

Now the Google alerts are the alerts of a dead man. Whatever the lag time within the fandom, his credibility was wiped out almost instantaneously on the broader scale. No one is seeking quotes from him any more. Every week it's just a regurgitation of his books. Get a free PDF here. An old message board post. It's kind of sad. When I was trying to finish my last two pieces my biggest issue was that I felt like I would be killing him. Destroying him. His whole life and image was completely wrapped up in the Beatles, and destroying a human was difficult. I had to keep myself angry at him because otherwise I would begin to think about what it meant for us to succeed. I didn't want him to be able to continue his mythology-as-biography, but also it was scary to think about what the truth would do to him.

I thought—we both thought—that the biggest problem would be getting people to see what we had uncovered, but in the end Phoebe @anotherkindofmindpod saw it before I'd even recovered from writing it and within 24 hours it had blown up and I was getting hate mail. There was no time to process anything. We went from a tumblr oddity to a nuclear bomb overnight.

And for a few months we both felt like it had all been for nothing. Like everyone hated us but to no purpose. The feedback we saw was all negative, and from the most vehement Lennon/Lewisohn freaks imaginable. It colored everything. And it was a while before I even managed to look at the Google alerts again.

But once I did it started to sink in.

Sharon, I think we won. I think we actually did it.

It's too bad that “winning” meant hurting a human. I wish it didn't. But this last month I've gone back and read my last two big posts and I realize that we were right. We were righteous. It had to be done, whatever the costs. I wish it had been less painful, but it's not our fault that he misrepresented things. We just told the truth. That's all.

That can't be a sin.

Vorrei farti una domanda seria... ma, se la risposta fosse un casino, non mi offendo se "mi ci mandi"!! 😄​

Hai idea di quanto costerebbe aprire una server farm? E, in subordine, è un'idea economicamente conveniente? Ho sempre lavorato nel settore dei servizi horeca, all'inizio come dipendente, poi come imprenditore. Da sempre ho avuto la passione per l'informatica e l'ingegneria. (mannaggia che non l'ho scelto come percorso di studi...) Ora mi trovo ad un bivio di vita e mi piacerebbe fare qualcosa in questo mondo che tanto mi piace. Hai presente quando racconti di voler mandare tutti i crucchi a quel paese e cambiare vita? Ecco. Ti capisco. I miei problemi non parlano tedesco, ma la situazione è simile. Per ora sto a fare ragionamenti... ma spero che nel 2025 possa trovare il giusto incastro per trasformare l'idea in azione! Ho a disposizione una struttura coperta di circa 3.500 mq ad oggi in disuso con accesso ad abbondanti fonti di energia rinnovabile (sole, vento, acqua di sorgente bella fredda per i chiller di raffreddamento) La server farm è stata la prima idea... Tu ne avresti altre?

Ovviamente se anche altri tumbleri hanno belle idee... ascolto con piacere!!

Ammazza che domanda ...

Mai fatto un ragionamento su questa cosa, ma posso pensare a voce alta, visto che nelle server farm ci sono entrato più di una volta, e ti posso dire, da gestore di alcuni di quei server, cosa ho incontrato lungo il cammino che mi portava dalla porta di ingresso al punto di lavoro. Vado in ordine, così facciamo la lista della spesa.

Sicurezza umana

Ti serve controllare gli accessi, supervisionare le aree e gestire chi può andare dove, quindi ti serve personale 24/7 tra guardie di sicurezza, telecamere (con tanto di registrazioni e sistemi per archiviare), sistemi di allarme e tutte le blindature possibili per effrazioni che si possono compiere attraverso ogni buco nel quale è possibile infilarsi, vetri antirapina e, se proprio devi assicurare un certo livello di sicurezza, metal detector e perquisizioni corporali dedicate e a-rattuse.

Sicurezza fisica

Porte tagliafuoco che ogni volta che si chiudevano mi partiva un timpano, progettare quanto più possibile con materiali ignifughi, e soprattutto sistemi di antincendio compatibili con l'elettricità a cascata su tutta l'area e che devono garantire determinati tempi di reazione, tutto deve essere a prova di statica, quindi tutti i materiali (partendo dai pavimenti, ad esempio) devono minimizzarne l'accumulo, prima che vai a toccare il telaio di un server e ti si fulminano le palle perché quel giorno a Milano faceva un freddo della madonna a Corso Zara presso la Sala Fastweb e ci sei andato con le mutande di flanella (tengo a sottolineare che, nonostante le apparenze, questo non è un post autobiografico).

Accessibilità

Vanno usati materiali "smontabili" in ogni momento, tutto il pavimento era flottante, potevi sganciare 'sti quadroni con una leva ed accedere a tutta la cablatura che viaggia sotto al pavimento, lo stesso vale per gli armadi, per le cablature che viaggiano in aria, e i cessi col bidet (questo non è proprio un must, ma faresti felice gli utenti), e mi raccomando la segnaletica, che non si capiva mai un cazzo, col capo che mi diceva per telefono vai a destra, vai a sinistra, ma usate delle coordinate cartesiane perdio. Ti serve, sempre all'uopo, una squadra di tecnici reperibile 24/7, perché c'è sempre qualche cazzo che si rompe, e inoltre c'è sempre il giorno che il cliente non ha davvero nessuno da poter mandare per premere il Power ON su un server e ti chiede in ginocchio, e poi uno dei tuoi sgherri per dispetto glielo accende ma gli stacca la Ethernet, vafammocc.

Temperatura controllata

Hai già citato il raffreddamento, diciamo che qui ognuno si raffredda il server come vuole, ma nella stragrande maggioranza è tutto a ventole (almeno lo era tipo 15 anni fa), e quindi devi smaltire tutta l'aria calda generata nei locali, quindi un sistema di aspirazione con i controcazzi, che deve tenere la temperatura costante, non vuol dire glaciale, quando ci andavo dovevo comunque letteralmente spogliarmi che faceva un caldo della madonna, però se semo capiti. E poi sì, tutta questa aria va raffreddata, ma vedo che ad acqua stai messo già bene. Un banco frigo con i ghiaccioli sarebbe gradito.

Energia

Capisco benissimo la tua voglia di tutela dell'ambiente, ma uno dei requisiti chiave è la copertura energetica SEMPRE, con tanto di backup, quindi tutte quelle belle robe solari e ventose, sì, son belle e aiutano, perché no, ma devi rispettare una fornitura costi quel che costi, anche quando c'è la nebbia e non si vede, e qua penso siano abbastanza cazzi.

Connettività

Hai voglia a fibre ....

Anche qui, devi garantire banda e ridondanza, come per il punto di prima, per ogni SLA (Service Level Agreement) che non rispetti ti inculano col sabbione vetrato.

Certificazioni

Per quante ne puoi avere, te ne sarai sicuramente scordato qualcuna, quindi daje de ISO, daje de IMQ, già ti dico che di questa server farm non se ne parlerà più (l'ho scritta solo per fare rima).

Che il mondo sia cambiato è evidente da tante cose: quando frequentavo la Statale di Milano, il rettore era Giuseppe Schiavinato detto "San Giuseppe delle sbarre" (per avere il vizio di tentare di "sbarrare" gli accessi agli studenti che volevano riunirsi in assemblea. My best recommendation would be to think back on what you have eaten and enjoyed, not just recently but over your entire life and make a running list, don't think about it just as you're writing a grocery list but as you are going about your day. What do you grab first, what draws your eye if and when you go out to eat. If it's something fancy or overly complex look it up anyways, find the ingredients used and pare it down from there. If this is still difficult, finding recipes first and trying them out is not a bad thing. Sure you might not like it, you might want to throw it away but trial and error is necessary in cooking and gaining both a better understanding of the foods you enjoy and of your needs.

And please try going to local market stands if you have them near you, sometimes people have samples or recommendations and resources themselves. My agoraphobia is so limiting.

Agoraphobia: frequently believed to be fear of outside, when it's fear of being trapped in a situation, away from safety.

It's feeling almost like you're being hunted any time you go outside.

I need my own transportation. I need an ebike/scooter.

This helps me actually get to, and from the places I need to be, with less of that fear.

About 80% of the times I can't go out is because I can't work up the courage to take the bus, anxiety making me sick to my stomach.

I have monitored and tracked my pain on a 1-10 scale for over 3 years now, about about 3 or 4 times a week, because I wanted to monitor this specifically - there has been no correlation between my chronic pain, and my weight gain. At all.

I monitor anxiety, and depression as well, to try and find trends, and keep an eye on things since I have issues with dissociation, and lose track of time frequently.]]]

I need this as a way to get more independence, and less delivery charges (primarily on groceries).

This helps me actually get to, and from the places I need to be, with less of that fear.

I left the house less than 30 times in 2 years, because I couldn't just get there on my own.

Normally people do that in about a month... 2 years.

Being on disability this kind of thing is never going to be available to me on my own.

This I would have for many years, and my father is a mechanic, so after warranty, I have the ability to get anything fixed up.

This also cuts my bus cost to least than 1/3rd the cost for many

Where as the bus being over 3 times the cost, just one way, of one trip.

The landlord is reno-ing the driveway, and adding a shed at the back of it, and because my unit is smallest, I get dibs on it.

So I'll have somewhere safe to store it.

Negli ultimi due giorni l'atmosfera di Torino ha subito un ulteriore tracollo.

Uscire di casa e andare per strada in qualsiasi modo sta cominciando a diventare un rischio per la propria vita.

Gli automobilisti vanno tutti veloci, tagliano la strada, non guardano dove vanno (o guardano solo dove vanno e non il resto della strada) e/o usano il telefono mentre guidano, perché usare il vivavoce con il telefono su un porta telefono, si sa, è per perdenti.

I pedoni si lanciano per strada, bloccano accessi, ti passano sopra per salire sui bus mentre stai scendendo.

Monopattini e rider sono fuori controllo. I rider, in particolare, usano la strada come se non ci fossero regole. Dove vivo non vedo moltissimi ciclisti ma non credo siano separati dal resto della massa come atteggiamento.

Per ben due volte in due giorni mi sono trovata ad attraversare la strada e rallentare di colpo, per permettere ad anziani di cominciare a camminare sulle strisce, perché la gente va tra i 60 e i 70 anche se in fondo c'è un semaforo rosso.

Sorella, che è ciclista, ora ha bisogno di otto occhi per uscire di casa e muoversi.

Le strisce pedonali non sono sicure. Le piste ciclabili non sono sicure. I semafori a favore non sono sicuri.

Tutte le persone che conosco mi dicono la stessa cosa: le strade di Torino sono una dannata giungla (quella di Jumanji).

La cosa sta chiaramente avendo un effetto anche su di me visto che, ieri mattina, sotto i portici di Via Sacchi,ho visto due ragazzi (tranquillissimi) approcciare una madre con bimba. Non ho sentito cosa le chiedevano ma ho continuato a girarmi per vedere se era tutto a posto finché non si sono separati.

After passing the Senate nearly unanimously last week, the future of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) appears uncertain. Congress is now on a six-week recess, and reporting from Punchbowl News indicates that the House Republican leadership may not prioritize bringing the bill to the floor for a vote when legislators return.

In response to Punchbowl’s reporting, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer released a statement saying, “Just one week ago, Speaker Johnson said that he’d like to get KOSA done. I hope that hasn’t changed. Letting KOSA and [the Children and Teens’ Online Protection Act] collect dust in the House would be an awful mistake and a gut punch—a gut punch to these brave, wonderful parents who have worked so hard to reach this point.” The bill has also received support from vice president and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

But the bill created a massive divide among the digital rights and tech accountability community. If passed, the legislation would require online platforms to block users under 18 from seeing certain types of content that the government considers harmful.

Proponents of the measure, which included the Tech Oversight Project, an nonprofit focused on tech accountability through antitrust legislation, saw the bill as a meaningful step toward holding tech companies accountable for the way their products impact children.

“Too many young people, parents, and families have experienced the dire consequences that result from social media companies’ greed,” said Sacha Haworth, executive director of the Tech Oversight Project, in a statement in June. “The accountability KOSA would provide for these families is long overdue.”

Others, like the nonprofit digital rights organization the Center for Technology and Democracy, said that, if enacted, the law could be used to prevent young users from accessing critical information about topics like sexual health and LGBTQ+ issues. This meant that some organizations that regularly lobby to hold Silicon Valley accountable found themselves siding with tech companies and their lobbyists in trying to kill the bill.

“KOSA is not ready for a floor vote,” said Aliya Bhatia, policy analyst with the Center for Technology and Democracy’s Free Expression Project, in a statement in July. “In its current form, KOSA can still be misused to target marginalized communities and politically sensitive information.”

Evan Greer, director of the nonprofit advocacy group Fight for the Future, which opposed the bill, tells WIRED that KOSA and legislation like it “divides our coalition” while allowing tech companies to “keep getting away with murder and avoiding regulation.”

“This was never really about protecting kids,” Greer says. “It was sort of about lawmakers wanting to say that they’re protecting kids, and that doesn’t actually help kids.” Instead of legislators focusing on the “flawed” legislation, Greer says that Congress could have spent that same time and energy on antitrust-focused legislation like the American Innovation and Choice Online and the Open App Markets Act, or on the American Privacy Rights Act.

“When our coalition is divided in fighting each other, we’re going to get rolled every time by Big Tech,” she says.

Meanwhile, Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, has said that she supports KOSA, as has the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a tech accountability nonprofit that was sued by X last year for exposing hate speech on its platform.

Although the House Republican leadership’s decision may signal the beginning of the end of KOSA itself, Gautam Hans, an associate law professor at Cornell University, says that “given the bipartisan interest in enacting this law, I suspect other proposals will follow—with hopefully more extensive safeguards against potential censorship by the state.”
