Academic Archives

After the first season of this popular horror fiction podcast things go a little off the rails, but the premise of the first season is fairly simple: Jonathan Sims, head archivist for the archives at the Magnus Institute, is making audio recordings of a collection of supernatural testimonies collected by researchers of the strange and unusual. He claims the archives are rather ill maintained by researchers too caught up in academia and attempts to digitize the written testimonies by recording himself reading them all.

Academic archives can be administrative, special collections, and/or results of research like at the fictional Magnus Institute. Once you turn 18, in the U.S. your university cannot release any records about you to anyone, not even your relatives, without your consent under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). When you think about it, your university typically has a lot of information about you. Your financial status for your financial aid and scholarship applications, your citizenship status including your state residency, your parents' educational backgrounds, every grade you've ever earned, and if you've ever used campus counseling resources they could even have sensitive mental health issues on file. These are just a few examples. Some jobs or internships may require a transcript, but no parent, employer, or landlord can contact your school and demand to see your grades or anything else about you thanks to these privacy acts. Jonathan Sims' audio transcripts being aired online as a podcast might be breaking some privacy acts, but oh well. The Magnus Institute has bigger issues going on. The Magnus Archives (the podcast itself, not the fictional institute) has an archive too containing transcripts of all the episodes here.

Many academic libraries also hold special collections, which are often technically archives even if they're under a library heading. Sometimes, archives struggling with funding or location  can benefit from partnerships with academic institutions. One such example is the ONE Archives, the largest and oldest LGBTQ+ archive in the U.S., which was absorbed into the University of Southern California library in 2010 following struggles with funding. Becoming part of USC (a private university) provided a stable budget as well as access to appropriate facilities to preserve analog materials as well as digitize items from the collection. However, universities in America are massive bureaucratic institutions often steeped in whiteness and imperialism. It is not guaranteed that being swept into an institution like this (especially when public universities are subject to state governmental funding allocation) is universally beneficial to all archives.

Hello? Test… uh. 1, 2, 3… Right, so.

[DEEP BREATH]

I’m Sasha James. I work for the Magnus Institute, London, an organisation dedicated to academic research into the paranormal. The head of the Institute, Gertrude Robinson, has employed me to replace the previous Head Archivist, Elias Bouchard, who recently quit the position.

I have been working in academia for a decade now, and am familiar with most of the artefacts and research. Some investigations are, admittedly, dead ends, but some appear to be genuine cases; however, when an investigation has gone as far as it can, it is transferred to the Archives. That’s us, me. 

So, the Institute was founded in 1818, and The Archive contains close to 200 years of case files. The Institute may have placed a higher emphasis on maintaining a pristine academic image rather than delving into the task of managing statements or recent experiences. We have a beautiful library but a mess of an archive. This isn’t necessarily a problem – I, or we, can deal with that. Digitalising and modern filling is easy, but, Elias Bouchard seemed to not prioritize that. 

It is going to take me a while to organise this mess; however, I am not alone. I’ve two- or well, three, researchers to assist me. I’ve worked with them in research and have no doubts with their credentials. Alongside me are Jonathan Sims, Martin Blackwood and, well, also, Timothy Stoker — they will do some supplementary research on details that may be missing.

I want to digitise the files as much as possible and record audio versions, but I think it will be on a tape recorder for now. I tried to record on my laptop and, it ended up… Distorted.

Thousands of files and loose papers clutter this space, with most notes appearing incoherent and unmarked boxes. It appears that some items are dated, but all the marking and organisation have been done manually, and, of course, without any digital or audio versions. I think my laptop might be the first computer here. It appears that little of the actual investigations have been stored in the Archives, so most of the files are the statements themselves.

I’ll try to present these as clear as I can at the end of each statement, but I can not, unfortunately, promise an order with the dates, or theme of the statements. I’m sorry to any researcher attempting to use these files for their own investigations.

I think that covers the new managements, and excuses the state of this place. Furthermore, I’ll try my best, but I don’t think it can get much worse. We have to begin somewhere, right?

Intro to the Project

The Ruins of Corgate is an epistolary novel being sent through the real-life postal system between @aki-no-hyo & @submerged-in-stories. It is being cross posted to Archive of Our Own [here].

The Setting

Psuedo-Victorian with established magic. Magicians are required to have full time "Agents" who are intended to look after the Magician, ensure their safety & other's, and generally keep the Magician from blowing the world up with a hubris-fueled arcane bomb. Magic is treated as an academic subject, complete with universities, grant competition, and peer reviewed journals.

A set of ruins has recently appeared in the coastal mountains near the village of Corgate. The area is isolated but not unexplored. After an intense competition, Mg. Leland Hawkins was selected to begin the exploration of the site.

Researching Online: A Guide

Below are worked examples of how to do an essay or research project using only online resources.

Don’t spend ages looking for one article or book unless it is really essential and even then, you may not be able to get it, but you will find something related.

Vary your search terms, e.g. for the examples below: early modern, renaissance, reformation, sixteenth century might all be relevant.

Follow links in articles and on collections – often, footnotes in journals online may be hyperlinked to the item (especially in more recent publications), you can see similar items, or who has cited that work. For primary sources/collections, catalogues may suggest similar items too.

There will be dead ends and frustrations but persevere – there is lots of material out there.

Save things using a citation programme like Zotero or Mendeley

If you find something interesting and potentially useful for another topic, bank it for later

Be creative and use sources you might not have thought about before, for example the sound archive in the British Library and think across period and geography.

Google Scholar and on JSTOR/other platforms, Project Muse which is another very good platform with loads of open access material.

How Media Continue To Discredit Themselves

How Russia, China and Iran Are Interfering in the Presidential Election (archived) - New York Times Eight years after Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election, foreign influence with American voters has grown more sophisticated. That could have outsize consequences in the 2024 race.

Written by three 'journalists' and published at the top of the NYT's homepage the intro reads:

When Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, spreading divisive and inflammatory posts online to stoke outrage, its posts were brash and riddled with spelling errors and strange syntax. They were designed to get attention by any means necessary. “Hillary is a Satan,” one Russian-made Facebook post read.

Posts like that 'one Russian-made Facebook post' (seen by how many?) 'interfered' in the 2016 election and were the reason for Hillery's loss?

Now, eight years later, foreign interference in American elections has become far more sophisticated, and far more difficult to track. Disinformation from abroad — particularly from Russia, China and Iran — has matured into a consistent and pernicious threat, as the countries test, iterate and deploy increasingly nuanced tactics, according to U.S. intelligence and defense officials, tech companies and academic researchers. The ability to sway even a small pocket of Americans could have outsize consequences for the presidential election, which polls generally consider a neck-and-neck race.

U.S. presidential election campaigns spend billions of dollars on fine tuned advertisements aimed at carefully targeted micro-audiences. It isn't even plausible that social media posts by this or that foreign actor could have comparable effects.

Russia, according to American intelligence assessments, aims to bolster the candidacy of former President Donald J. Trump, while Iran favors his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. China appears to have no preferred outcome.

Should we not be especially afraid of the 'sophisticated' and 'difficult to track' foreign interference by China because it has no preferred outcome?

This year, a deepfake video of a Republican congressman from Virginia circulated on TikTok, accompanied by a Chinese caption falsely claiming that the politician was soliciting votes for a critic of Beijing who sought (and later won) the Taiwanese presidency.

How could a fake video of a Republican congressman with Chinese caption that was used to discredit a Taiwanese politician influence a U.S. election in which China has 'no preferred outcome'? What is the logic therein?

I have no idea. Nor has the New York Times. It just claims that it does.

Whoever works in western media which carries nonsense like the above should contemplate how much they are contributing to this:

For the third consecutive year, more U.S. adults have no trust at all in the media (36%) than trust it a great deal or fair amount. Another 33% of Americans express “not very much” confidence.

So what was the historical theory of objectivism?

It's more accurate to call them the "Objectivity" School of history, and this one goes all the way back to the very earliest days of history as an academic discipline in the mid 19th century. (This is something we covered in my Intro Theory course in grad school, and I remember it well.) At this time, American historians were really struggling with how to differentiate themselves from the plethora of amateur historians (a problem the disciplne still has), and like a lot of educated people in the Anglo-American sphere they turned to the Germans, because German higher education was the absolute cutting edge in the 19th century.

Specifically, they turned to Leopold von Ranke:

One of the OGs (he started university in 1814, not long after the universities had re-opened after Napoleon had closed them, and his first book was published in 1824), Von Ranke can arguably be called the father of academic history: the dude introduced source-based methods, archival research, seminars, and close reading of texts to the discipline. He's associated with a particular phrase that decribed how he thought history should be approached: "wie es eigentlich gewesen ist." This can translate to either history "as it actually happened" or history "as it happened in its essence."

In part because Von Ranke really hated Hegel (the feeling was mutual) and the whole concept of the "philosophy of history," his English-speaking acolytes used the former translation and committed themselves to a particularly austere version of empiricism in which the historian was to confine themselves to "just the facts" and refrain from any grand theories that sought to explain historical events through a teleological narrative of progress or the working out of an Idea through the dialectic. (Peter Novick argues that this was a total misunderstanding of Von Ranke's work, that Von Ranke was way more of a German Romantic than he was thought to be, and that for example Von Ranke believed that the 16th century had been set aside by God for the working-out of Lutheranism and German nationalism, which Von Ranke thought were basically the same thing.)

Combining Von Ranke's empiricism with Victorian positivism, the Objectivity School believed that (through proper academic methods) historical events could be understood objectively, as if the historian had actually been there at the time, observing with omniscient and impartial eyes. Once that had been accomplished, each historical fact could be added to the general store of knowledge like bricks being stacked into a great pyramid, until at some point in the near future the edifice would be complete, we would know the Past perfectly and completely, and the project of academic history would end.

Every generation and school of historians who followed screamed "bullshit" at the top of their lungs. Not only were historical sources always partial and incomplete, but they were also thoroughly biased so that their description of events couldn't be taken as objective fact but subjective interpretation. The same was true of historians, they argued as the brand-new field of historiography first turned the analytic eye back on the historical discipline, who all were products of their environment and who inevitably interpreted sources through the lens of their own beliefs and values. Rather than a scientific march in the direction of the pyramid of perfected knowledge, history by necessity would have to be a permanent revolution of revisionism, as each new generation and new school of historians reinterpreted the events and facts we thought we had known through new eyes and new ideas.

After a huge dust-up at the turn of the 20th century that saw more than a few younger historians banished from the universities for being godless communards, the Objectivity School faded away within the historical discipline and became merely an object of study, which I think is a fitting end.

So that's the difference between objectivism and Objectivism.

read chap 3-13 of theogeny this morning since i was free until 2pm (wanted to wait until it was complete before starting, and did 1-2 last night since i had some time). very nice story! the tone and style of your writing feels totally professional (and honestly surpasses many published authors i’ve read LOL). however, i was especially blown away by all of the historical details about ancient athens & greece. i’m as close to the opposite of an expert on the time period as possible, thus am not fully convinced this isn’t based on a true story where you got sent back in time, but then chose to come back to the present afterwards. were there any sources you leaned particularly heavily on? even my own experience writing a gen-ed history paper about the original Olympic games during my undergrad felt about as straightforward as navigating a swamp of hopelessly entangled, greek-speaking, arguing jellyfish, what with all the completely speculative secondary sources and glaring holes in the firsthand accounts of the events.

i’ve been away from the depths of the hp fandom scene for a year or two, but my recollection of your blog was that you’re a law student? given that law ≠ classical greek history (as far as i know), i’d say the fact that you specifically researched all of this for the story makes it even more captivating. (although the attention to detail does also align exactly with the depth of case-research i’d assume is possessed by the top-tier, most competent lawyers, though that is purely speculation). but if your real answer is the time travel thing, just blink twice and cite wikipedia or whatever ;)

also, i’m curious how realistic it is for a classics scholar to know enough ancient greek that she can carry even a stilted conversation with native speakers. if so, i find it mind-blowing that such depth of knowledge of a dead language is wrapped up into a subset of a history PhD—makes my own discipline seem like 3rd grade times tables.

so: I tended to use a lot of sources from Google Scholar, JStor, my own university's online library, what have you; there are a few times I went back and read through my old Classical Civilizations lecture notes, but I only ever took an intro class so I wasn't exactly delving into the minutiae. many of the sources are listed in the end notes, but I have an entire bookmarks folder (which I should probably delete) that looks like this lol

of course, I had to suspend my disbelief and expect/hope the reader would suspend their disbelief at the things that I just couldn't really know; but that was my moment for artistic liberty, which I used a lot of let me tell you.

and yes! I'm a second year law student. but I started this story when I was still applying to law schools :") I have worked as an archival and online research assistant/hired researcher/research fellow since I was 19 in my undergrad days, so I've become very familiar with the process of sifting through online archives. I also just really enjoy it! I love learning about areas of history I don't know a lot about, so this was just such a perfect passion project.

so — in terms of speaking Ancient Greek, I think it's absolutely possible that students at the PhD level would be able to communicate, given that many programs have really robust Greek language curricula. however, and this is something I touched on in the early chapters and something I researched to the best of my ability, the way that academic accents from non-Greek native speakers (aka, modern Greek people) sound is very different in pronunciation and would likely sound strange and unnatural to someone in Ancient Greece; such is the nature of language development. so, I think would have been pretty much like any non-fluent language speaker being thrown into an immersive program with no preparation.

I'm not here for any discipline ribbing, though! I'm sure whatever it is you study is just as challenging and engaging as Lily's field :)
