candyman, what is he?
Tumblr media
to see him is to know, without a doubt, that you have always known him. known him as an entity in that place kept for terrors.
he clings to history as difficult to endure hearing as they are to tell. you need these shows and shams to keep your interest. you need a trauma too loud to ignore. his Existence & Immortality is achieved by a cycle of ageless oral tradition, supping the chill of fear felt by people when sharing Candyman's story. Candyman has worn the faces of many different tragedies, but his current conscription is the spirit and tale of daniel robitaille. they influence one another, and would not be so easily separated. where Candyman ends and daniel begins, who's to say?
it is why he must defend the rules: summoning him will end in bloodshed, or else there will be doubters, and soon no one will carry on their lips his legacy
Tumblr media
candyman, what is his power?
Tumblr media
MENTAL INDUCEMENT: TO PUSH THE MIND TO A DESIRED STATE ADDICTIVE CONTENTMENT: TO CAUSE OTHERS TO FEEL EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT FANATICISM MANIPULATION: TO INDOCTRINATE OTHERS INTO FANATICAL OBSESSION
And you will be enchanted upon witnessing him. By his voice, by his fetching display, by the buzz from his body. You will have to fight to resist the rapture. You think you know he means you as much harm as romance. he is the Power of Seduction, speaking like an old lover, it is courtship simply to be looked at by him. He drains the strength from your limbs when he reaches for you with offerings.
The sweetness he offers is life without living: was to be dead, but remembered everywhere; immortal in gossip and graffiti. he offers to put You in his story, by being his victim.
You must consent, either by summoning him or by obliging him when he asks for you to forfeit your life over to him.
Once summoned by the ritual of speaking his name five times in a mirror, he can do much more than suddenly appear and slay you where you stand. he can haunt you as he sees fit, invisible or visible at his whim, either as only a reflection or with a physical form, appear anywhere at any time, and extend his violence to anyone close enough to your vicinity.

so. um. the good news is we found your boyfriend. the bad news is that, well, we sort of…dug him up…in the middle of a car park. in leicester (buckley et al. 2013). leicester, yeah. sorry. they demolished the friary he was hastily interred in when henry viii dissolved all the monasteries. you know how it is. and as it turns out, well, shakespeare was…sort of right about him. scoliosis, yeah, sorry (appleby et al. 2014). if it makes you feel any better we analysed his bones and it turns out he had a pretty high-protein diet before he died (lamb et al. 2014). and he drank so much wine that it changed their chemical composition, which we didn't know could actually happen before we analysed him (lamb et al. 2014), so he was having a good time, at least.

I've seen a lot of people point out that while Astarion's whole "thing" in act 1 is that he's this sexy sweet talking savant, he only has 10 charisma and actually isn't all that good at it.
He practices cheesy pickup lines within earshot of the person he's going to say them to, and every single time he flirts with tav it's extremely heavy-handed and almost cringeworthy. It's pretty obvious that he's trying to manipulate tav, even if the reason doesn't become clear until his act 2 confession.
But here's the thing: Astarion never actually needed to be all that good at flirting.
He says himself that the vast majority of his "targets" were drunks and brothel-goers. People who never actually saw him as anything other than an object for their pleasure. They were going to go home with him no matter what he said. A few pretty words and his physical beauty would do the rest.
But Tav is the first person to actually view him as a real person, which is why it becomes so glaringly obvious that he's not nearly as charming as he thinks he is. Astarion tells them at the tiefling party that "every part of their body screams temptation" and their response is that he's "sweet" and "silly". They're not buying it for second, because they don't need to be told pretty lies to like him. They like him because of who he really is as a person. They fall in love with him not because he's good in bed or has pretty eyes or a sexy body. They fall in love with him because he's sweet and secretly very kind. Because there is so much pain and sadness and fear in him, and he truly cannot see how amazing he really is. That his goodness never really went away, it just got hidden for a while.

The Legend of Vox Machina is a deeply philosophical show that asks important questions such as: “what if the Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov had a gun?”

Insolent little- (the Dev's notes say that the full line is "you insolent little brat" which, um...)
Insolent little pup (the line was in EA, although I’m not entirely sure if it’s Ascended Astarion. Full line: “you are an insolent little pup, aren’t you?”)
"You ingrate" (When you try to break up with him. It's not really a pet name, but-)
"Property I cherish, but still my property" (his thoughts)

one of my favorite behind the scenes details is that theo solomon (wyll's actor) loves wyll's romance scenes and considers them among his favorite scenes to do, while tim downie (gale's actor) was Flabbergasted to learn that not only is romance an option in the game, but he plays a romanceable character— the horror!— and fell ass backwards into The Boat Scene which had to be redone like six times, to his utter agony.
