The One with ABBA

"I Just Wanna is a Summertime Blues Rip-Off, everybody knows that!"

That may be because Paul told everyone about it. Or probably he told it only once (because denial would not achieve much anyway) and a lot of people heard it, and now you can read this sentence regularly on any forum when someone mentions I Just Wanna even remotely. It's one of the cornerstones of basic knowledge carried on in fan circles, which doesn't necessarily mean anything bad, but it's a little bit like Read My Body and Def Leppard, i.e. this is usually only half the truth.

Although this serves as a now time-honored statement and most certainly applies to I Just Wanna's and Eddie Cochran's Summertime Blues' verses, what else would there be to chat about? Did the rest of the song fall out of the sky right into Paul's lap? Not exactly, I would say cautiously. Well, I like to listen to I Just Wanna and In the Mirror one after the other, and somehow Love Her All I Can always hangs together in these two songs related playlists. I think I mentioned that in a similar manner elsewhere (1).

I Just Wanna for it's part doesn't want to copy Love Her All I Can at all, but just varies it. Or better, it embraces it. It's more as if, thanks to Bob Ezrin's multi-layered production, it offers a complement that could seamlessly fit into Love Her All I Can. Or vice versa. And not exactly a rarity in the house of Kiss, only this time relatively inconspicuous, at least by it's standards.

There would be on the one hand the guitar counterpoint to Paul's Summertime Blues homage, quasi the guitar answering his verse vocals, and on the other hand a second support in Paul's continuing vocals, still in the middle of the verse, this low guitar/bass descending in three steps. This is the spine of Love Her All I Can. I will highlight those parts in the links below, then everyone can make his own picture of it (2).

Okay, so far so good, only we haven't talked about the chorus at all yet, and I don't plan to go into the fake-fuck-FUH!'s in any way (they haven't done anything to anyone). But when it comes to the chorus, I for one have inevitably arrived at Agnetha, Benny, Björn and Anni-Frid. I can't help it, and I'll never get out of this skin, but the chorus of I Just Wanna sounds unmistakably like ABBA to me, and I think it would work absolutely perfectly and fantastically as an ABBA song. Just listen to the melody, the harmonies, the flow and the level of saturation in the production. It's all there. Of course I'm looking in Bob Ezrin's direction.

I would like to point out that at that time there was hardly any other band that was more associated with the 70s than ABBA. Maybe apart from Kiss. And if ABBA Gold, this hugely successful greatest hits compilation with its 30 trillion units sold, hadn't been released four months after Revenge, I would have bet that that ABBA-sound would have been intentional. But at least I'm left with a pleasant, warm feeling of my own inner fulfillment. And that's not bad either.

(1) Where? In a ping-pong duel of In the Mirror against Love Her All I Can, which I commented on in detail, but in which I ran out of steam at a certain point. Scroll your way through it, It's somewhere there.

(2) And there's probably a lot more to it, but I haven't pursued that any further. Not today.

hi! ok, if we are using the definition of classic rock that the creator of srs went with, which is literally anything from the 50s to the 90s, my favourite artists are abba, the beatles, kate bush, billy joel, haircut 100 and im starting to get into fleetwood mac. ive been into the beatles and abba for a long time because both my parents were into them, but especially my dad with the beatles. the first cd i ever owned was abba gold, which was a beautiful start to a cd collection that is now in triple digits. kate bush was always someone i liked, although i probably only really knew wuthering heights and maybe cloudbusting, but then one random evening in 2021, i watched kate bush at the bbc with my mum, which introduced me to the wedding list, hammer horror, the man with the child in his eyes, etc. weirdly, i got into billy joel after watching the glee episode, and i got into haircut one hundred after watching a channel 5 programme about the best music videos of 1982.

When I say I love the scenes between Bruno and Abbacchio I’m talking about these scenes. I love seeing them argue with each other
