Today I wanted to share just a little bit of my AAC device. I use the app called coughdrop on my Amazon kids tablet. I have basic communication boards like the ones shown including my home board. Something cool I recently added was a visual support section with coping skill graphics and reminders for myself while waiting, talking and taking turns in conversation, and much more.

fantasy AAC (augmentative and alternative communication). a book with words and pictures on the pages that, when tapped with it's matching planchette, produce the word in the caster's True Voice. small stones that when gestured with produce colored sparks, one in each hand used to indicate yes and no. a chalk slate that words and pictures drawn on it float up off it and hover in the air for a moment before dissipating, like captions or thought bubbles. a little more abstractly: a set of scrying dice that when rolled by the user, land face-up on pictograms that could be interpreted to mean the users statement they intended (For example, if the user wished to say 'i want to leave' the dice rolled may indicate I, Desire, Journey, Negative Emotion).
#badger rants#aac#i think the dice one is the most interesting but the least useful idea since it involves interpretation by the conversational partner#but i think the other 3 are solid ideas

I have a whole list of things I want to write about. Always I feel like I am only just keeping on top of basic body needs, plus the constant dysregulation. I am constantly brain overfull, no capacity left. And with every skill I lose, it gets harder.
I also have a list of edits I want to make to new AAC (mainly words I want to add, but a few notes on how to rearrange). It takes a lot of energy to make edits on this AAC, the settings are complicated and new. And physically takes strength to lift arms a lot, and fine motor control to tap tiny tiny places on screen.
I hope for more days where I have more brain space and more calm and more can control body. So I can write more things I want to write. And make edits on AAC so I can use it more to help write!
And hope for feel less dysregulated so I can properly rest my body when it is tired and sore, not just swing swing swing, to try and stay closest to calm as possible.
AAC can be so helpful for words and writing, but only if it works right for me. There is so many aspects that go into making AAC work for me, it is hard to make it fit perfectly. But I am working on it slowly.
Supercore 50 is already closest fit to perfect that I find so far (out of all options that I know about)! And I currently work on WordPower 100 to make visually better - I want to learn it for with keyguard. I really really try.
I just have so much in my head is abstract and fragments and cannot get out with words. Frustrating. I want to write!!!

Accommodations shouldn’t only be respected when you’re on good terms with the person. I mostly text to communicate, and my parents are fine with it. Until I’m in trouble, which happens to be one of the times I find talking hardest.
Just because you are mad at someone doesn’t take away their deserving of respect- it tells them, and others you care about in their same position- that your support is conditional. That the second they do something that upsets you that support and respect is gone.
If you dislike someone, no matter the reason, that Never gives you the right to be ableist (or any other kind of bigoted) towards them.
#shoutout for this post idea goes to my parents for forcing me to use oral speech while chewing me out of missing hw#gotta love that executive dysfunction#/sarc#disability#actually autistic#semiverbal#semispeaking#aac#<- technically- I mentioned solely texting to communicate#frog croaks

flip phones and low tech - blogpost x rant
In a world where i dream of a flip phone once again, and a simpler less distracting life, simple because it is designed smoothly, and has little features, am i reaching for overconsumption in the hope of long term underconsumption, happiness, meditation, and clarity?
I want a flip phone, but then I would need a music player, a new car navigation, pedometer, and a laptop. And if i want to keep things even simpler possibly keeping an iPad to serve its own purpose.
But with this overconsumption, does simplicity and happiness actually outweigh that? And with less screen time and lessened ability to look at what one can buy, will we buy less fruitless objects in the long run? We will be spending more time in the real world of course.
And even though people have come to the agreement it is impossible to live without a smartphone, I did until November 2022. Life was harder at times, of course, but what if i did abandon these modern ways, slowly, without buying other things to test the limits of my abilities, start looking at paper maps maybe, only allow myself to use my phone for music, text, and call. Mount a gps in my car, and only use it when necessary. When i can, use a paper map of my town, and have a few on hand of cities near by. Would that be possible? Would it make traveling to other states, exploring new states, solo travel altogether horrible because there’s so much else to worry about? And leaving the country, basically impossible.
But if one was to do this, one of the intentions must be with being more aware and appreciative of our experiences especially new ones, so solo travel must then be more exhilarating with ur low tech lifestyle. But at the same time, less spontaneous, unless u carry the car gps in ur bag, and possibly even then, u can not just go to some new place it requires more forethought and planning, unless u know trusted people u may be with.
My personal dilemma may be everything is far too complicated, i wish for it all to be very simple, not just aesthetically, but functionally, i wish things to do less. But is that cause I wish to over consume? Or i actually want to connect with everything deeper and more meaningfully? I adore music and the aesthetics, and have a hatred for music streaming, so i have been planning to get a modded ipod, but then u still have to have some sort of app to listen to a new podcast episode on, so intern, because u theoretically switched ur iPhone to a flip phone, u must have to use ur iPad/laptop for another use, making it less simple already and defeating the purpose.
And is all of this just fruitless in general? Is the real answer getting rid of most of ur belongings, livening in perfect minimalism, and being as precisely organized as a brain surgeon? But that, is actually more of a commitment then getting new things, that u can simply stop using if u so choose and take ur iphone out of whatever drawer it sat dormant in the mean time. Is this an overall frustration with society, myself, or something more deep-seated? Or is it actually simple, and its the rust of memory making me long for my childhood? And even if it seems i want less, im left curious if i actually want more.

also a special shoutout for real like wendy epic ableism moments when she stops talking directly to winston and expresses this is b/c he communicates too incorrectly (here too literally or whatever, once again whether he misinterpreted her or she misinterpreted him, it's put on him) and thus he doesn't deserve that
#winston billions#and i mean handshake with how winston's basically not considered allowed to talk at all by anyone out here#but like. alright we're not showing that winston is in the room mostly for a joke but even randos are like ''hmm. bit impolite'' lol#but once we do see him b/c he's speaking....like actually it Is heinously rude / diminishing / infantilizing to be spoken to indirectly#and The Behavior Is Inherently Ableist Here like ofc it's probably rude no matter what outside some kind of rly specific contexts lol but#that here she Is just implying he doesn't get to be spoken to b/c of some shortcoming / assumed lack of capacity#whatever she Does mean by ''see the matrix'' which is nothing but convenient vagueness abt Ability anyways#he's only here b/c she thinks he's annoying or w/e or otherwise extrinsically showing lack of value (can't be ableism there....)#and like winston and any other character is like. it's not textual sure but it doesn't need to be Textually Labeled#and sometimes can't be when ppl absolutely write based of ppl they know / encounter but don't know are autistic or etc#and that's how it works irl too. someone being Officially(tm) Autistic or smthing shouldn't be some necessary disclosure#b/c it's about The Underlying Principles At Play vs making some approved ''exceptions.'' if he's supposedly allistic it's still sm shit.#like how trans ppl & transphobia could exist prior to those terms even existing to be used. ppl are affected by them w/o being Out....#& btw like ppl still saying some shit like ''some autistic ppl will just be Bad At / Have No Social Skills & you have to be chill abt it''#like what does [social skills] mean here. what's the underlying element of socializing that they may do differently but you say is a Worse#or Absent version of the ''normal'' way of going about things. even if you actually get specific enough abt what a ''skill'' is; which is#gonna be a non universal non rule probably inaccurate idea of a Normal(tm) pattern of behavior/approach; sure maybe some ppl will struggle#to do that or largely/entirely not be able to do it / be unwilling to do it; gasp; what's its goal/effect & do they pursue/achieve that#another way. e.g how much AAC could be considered inherently ''bad'' re socializing or a lack of w/e ''skills'' or etc.#then like ok so once again a begrudging exception for autistic ppl is made. what's ''being okay with'' that even look like then? is anyone#gonna be using their ''good social skills'' to more successfully interact w/them? is Not socially excluding / ostracizing / punishing an#autistic person an Exception / something Extra you heroically do? e.g. & so what if some theoretical person isn't socially engaging w/other#ppl in any way. what do & don't they ''deserve'' differently from others b/c of that.#& anyways meanwhile they're certainly talking abt winston's Capabilities. but mostly talking around it b/c the point is He Gets Results &#will keep getting those results b/c why wouldn't he. but they can just cite anything to argue why oh but he doesn't Really have the value#cue vague shit like matrix refs b/c if he was Reeally talented we'd think he acts right. b/c Any bs can be said b/c winston doesn't have#the insulation or backup or ability to independently wield/gain social status his way through this shit. is only allowed to talk to#coworkers abt it by making it abt taylor actually (which is also true). still only makes it b/c rian is correctly remaining in the#acceptable range of being offbeat. so she already has more power than him & can choose to keep him around as that fun punching bag ig yay#then nobody cares. also he can't say he controls an instrument but Others refer to ''genius'' but negatively. wendy rhoades Would do ABA fr

"Nonverbal Individuals: Empowering Independence and Self-Expression"
"I May Be Non Verbal Nonverbal" is a powerful statement that raises awareness about individuals who communicate differently, particularly those on the autism spectrum or with other conditions that affect verbal communication. This phrase acknowledges the diversity in communication methods and challenges common misconceptions about nonverbal individuals.
Buy now:19.95$
The repetition of "Non Verbal" and "Nonverbal" emphasizes the importance of this aspect of the individual's identity and experience. It draws attention to the fact that being nonverbal is a significant part of who they are, but does not define their entire being or capabilities.
This statement serves multiple purposes:
Self-advocacy: It allows nonverbal individuals to express their mode of communication confidently.
Education: It informs others about the existence and normalcy of nonverbal communication.
Awareness: It promotes understanding of diverse communication needs in society.
Empowerment: It asserts that being nonverbal doesn't equate to having nothing to say or contribute.
The phrase challenges the notion that verbal communication is the only valid form of expression. It reminds others that nonverbal individuals have thoughts, feelings, and ideas that they express through alternative means such as sign language, writing, typing, picture boards, or assistive technology devices.

"I May Be Non Verbal Nonverbal" encourages respect for different communication styles and promotes inclusivity. It invites others to be patient, open-minded, and willing to explore alternative ways of connecting and understanding. This phrase ultimately celebrates neurodiversity and the rich tapestry of human communication.
Selecting presents for adults with autism requires thoughtful consideration of their individual interests, sensory preferences, and unique needs. Sensory-friendly items like weighted blankets, noise-canceling headphones, or tactile fidget toys can provide comfort and stress relief.

Tech gadgets such as tablets or smartwatches may assist with communication and daily organization. Special interest-related gifts, like books, collectibles, or hobby supplies aligned with their passions, are often well-received. Consider practical items that support independent living skills or time management. Comfort items, including soft clothing or plush toys, might be appreciated. Art supplies or musical instruments can encourage self-expression. Always prioritize the individual's specific preferences and needs when choosing a gift, as autism manifests differently in each person.

I'm obsessed with this Instagram account called parrot kindergarten where a woman is teaching her cockatoos to use an AAC app on their iPad and these birds are so fuxking funny. they video call their grandma 20 times in a row to complain the lamp in the room is off. they get existential about death. I love birds and how chaotic they are
#im not a pet behavioralist or a speech therapist or anything but i love animals that are learning AAC#like im prepared to admit they may have no idea what theyre trying ti say but its still very fun#when Bunny the Poodle complains about noisy neighbors or Ellie the Cockatoo says the squirrels are outside#or even just birds learning to talk. i love apollo the parrot#badger rants

this but with the exception that ASL is a preferred language not a preferred AAC.
I love Deaf autistics
I love Deaf autistics who don't know their speaking ability because they were raised signing and without oral speech
I love Deaf autistics who do know they are nonspeaking because their lack of speech extended to signed language
I love Deaf autistics who are forced to use AAC in English because signed language is inaccessible to them
I love d/Deaf autistics who feel alienated from the hearing autistic community
I love Deaf autistics whose autistic traits make their signing hard to understand
I love Deaf autistics
#sorry if this comes across as nitpicky I just#hate people referring to anything other than SEE as AAC#and even then SEE is on thin ice#because it perpetuates the idea that ASL is just English using your hands rather than#a full and distinct language

Everyone love autism until the person needs someone to remind them or help do things like bathe, change clothes, and use the bathroom.
Everyone love autism until they need to be told what to do in social interactions and still can’t do it correctly.
Everyone love autism until they can’t communicate in the way you deem appropriate. Until they need other ways to communicate because they can’t verbally do it. They love autism until they can’t communicate even if they have aac. until they have NO (no) ways to communicate because they don’t understand they can.
Everyone loves autism until they can’t sit down and stop moving. Until they grunt or moan or make random sounds. Love until moves around and not even realize that their moving.
Everyone loves the idea of autism until it’s not level one low support needs. And not fair that high support needs, medium support needs, level 3, level 2 autistics get so much hate for things can’t help. They should still be loved!
