Promenade (La Promenade)
Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919)
Date: c. 1905
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, PA, United States
Description
The child here is probably Renoir's youngest son, Claude, at about age four, strolling with his nursemaid, Renée Jolivet. He painted this portrait in Essoyes, a small village that was the hometown of Renoir's wife, Aline, and where the Renoir family often spent summers. The large canvas straddles the categories of genre and portraiture. When this painting was exhibited in Paris in 1906, one critic said it confirmed Renoir's evolution from an impressionist to an heir of the great European painting tradition.

every once in a while— and i see this happen mostly on twitter but i’m sure you get it everywhere thoughts are shared— someone gets back from a european vacation and hauls off about the health benefits and there’s all this stuff people are saying. do you feel better and lose weight because of the walking or the lack of scary american add-ins— which part of our lives in the usa is the true poison, in other words. and i’m sympathetic to this because some element of both is true, but also i cannot shake the feeling that this is primarily the result of a totally nutso category error. people go on vacation and go whoa! i feel way better! and get back and go whoa! i don’t feel as good! and part of it is that the drudgery of daily life is poison or whatever but you did just pay money to go to the feel-good place to feel good. i feel that the feel-good place aspect is really being elided here

Watching some of the documentaries on my watch list and I'd really like to recommend 'A Love Song For Latasha'. It's about Latasha Harlins so it's obviously an emotional watch, but it's done so wonderfully and it truly is a beautiful memorial for her. Less than 20 minutes long but so, so impactful 💜
