Time for Fanfic Friday!

First, a WIP update: it appears that the much lamented Izzy POV section of Chapter 3 was important scaffolding for the chapter as a whole, and finally tackling it clarified most of the rest of the structure I needed. I order to gauge my progress over the last several weeks, I moved everything to a new doc and it looks like I'm about halfway to my self-imposed upper word count limit of ~8000. That's not a goal, it can be shorter, but it will certain grow on revision.

All of which is to say that the weeks I've spent whining about my slow progress weren't necessary, because I have been making progress, even if it wasn't visible to me at the time. TLDR Chapter 3 will be here sooner than you think, although idk exactly when. My progress over the next couple days will determine whether it takes one week or two (or three) for me to have a beta-ready draft. I think. I hope.

Anyway, time for recs! I seem to have fallen into a rhythm of a few OFMD recs and one from GO, and if it ain't broke I won't try to fix it! Here's some things I've been reading:

Maybe it's just time to give @piratecaptainscaptainpirates a permanent Fanfic Friday slot, because no matter what he seems to end up on here. And this time I've got TWO recs! There's Moth to a Flame, a sweet funny modern one-shot where Ed pretends to share Stede's enthusiasm for bugs early in their relationship, with predictable consequences; and their newest multi-chapter WIP On a Bright Day, Next Week, which is (sort of?) a Portal/Portal 2 AU? Or at least inspired by it? In any case, I've never hit the subscribe button faster.

In "older fics I'm finally circling back around to" we've got Here's to the Night by @xoxoemynn, a Y2K NYE AU because who doesn't love acronyms? But for real, it's sweet and funny and full of wonderful 1999 flavor that made me smile a lot.

As an Astrology Gay you know I was gonna love Connecting the Dots by @theyellowestmustard! It's so good I can even ignore my personal headcanon that Ed is a Pisces, whereas in this fic he's a Cancer. At least we agree on his undeniable watery nature, and that even though astrology is fake, he's too sweet to ever be a Scorpio. Anyway what really matters here is Ed getting pampered on his special day by Stede "The Most Romantic Motherfucker Alive" Bonnet, as is right and proper.

Last but not least there's Waddle Together by @sylwritesstuff, a weird wonderful GO fic that I genuinely can't explain how I found, but I have to assume it was fate because I had such a blast reading it. This may be the first and only time I've finished a fic where Crowley and Aziraphale aren't their eldritch selves. They're uh, not human either. Just roll with it.

I spent most of this week feeling very stupid. I am probably still stupid, but the last two days have resulted in a fair number of words (by my standards) that I think sound pretty good (also by my standards). I have been, as usual, bouncing across All the Chapters, but I decided I want to finish Kensei’s chapter, because I started it years ago and it just needs. To be done. As of this morning, there’s three more scenes left, which I hope means 2-3 more days.

When I first started working on this chapter, I was very proud of myself for figuring out a characterization for Kensei--and then this week I decided I’d lied to myself and that wasn’t true. He felt unidimensional and not true enough to his canon character.

Then I was like, oh, good grief. Kensei has like 30 lines in canon. He has more than 30 lines in this fic. Therefore:

But I don’t think that’s really true either. XD Canon Kensei is an iceberg, not a blank slate. I think there are a lot of equally true ways to fill out the part of his iceberg that’s under the surface, but it has to feel like the same chunk of ice. And that chunk of ice has to feel whole.

Kensei’s still angry. Yeah, they came back. Yeah, TYBW. Yeah, they’re giving this a shot, but he got burned bad by Soul Society and “bygones will be bygones” is not how this works. He doesn’t know or trust any of the people on this mission (except Rose. Hisagi, he keeps encountering in ways that affirm for him that he not know or understand this man). Not because he suspects them of treachery, but there’s a big gap between not suspecting someone of treachery and feeling like a bonded unit.

He’s angry, and bossy, and territorial of this mission because he’s the leader of Team Muguruma--but he’s also a little less than self-assured, because he actually hasn’t done this in a while and a lot has changed and these guys aren’t His Guys. His impulse to make a team that works and keep morale up and do all the things that need doing in that regard is in conflict with his hesitation to put that kind of relational effort into a bunch of strangers, some of whom his anger has already decided he hates. And there are things he just hasn’t gotten over yet, even though in his mind oh my god it’s been 100 years, who am I, a gothic poet?

He’s also really wrong about a lot of things--some factual and some interpretive--and he keeps having moments where some new piece of information or some new interaction will come up that requires him to revise things he’s already decided. Which is the professional thing to do, but he doesn’t want to be the one who has to keep revising, accepting, etc. He wants to see some of that from other people (and/or Societies).

A lot of this is the Trauma talking for Kensei. But I want this to come across without Kensei seeming too wet blanket about it, but also without this chapter being 8000 words of Kensei being gratingly antagonistic for seemingly no reason. Look, the man has been to too many Captain’s Meetings and has had it up to HERE with Hitsugaya and Byakuya (which Rukia takes it upon herself to take personally. For the sake of Kuchiki Pride). 

I think I’ll need to keep finessing this chapter for clarity, but since there’s a Renji chapter before this one and Hinamori’s chapter is after, I hope no one will read it and think “my god this writer really hates Rukia and Hitsugaya. Goddamn!!”

Help me find a specific Gravity Falls Fanfic!

Hi, I'm looking for a gravity falls fanfiction I believe that I read some time in 2020 (Possibly 2021, but i dont think so) pretty sure it was on Archiveofourown

What I remember from the fic:

It was centered around dipper

It took place in the future (dipper and Mabel were adults)

Dipper was back in gravity falls. i think the reason he was in gravity falls was because he had tried to commit suicide (PTSD related reasons i think) and the people around him thought it would be a good idea for him to get away.

I think Dipper used to have a roommate. the roommate was worried about dipper because of all the nightmares dipper used to have

Mabel had a girlfriend (maybe fiancé??) and i think they were on a vacation in Europe. I think the girlfriends name was something like Sam or Samantha

Wendy found out dipper kept a gun in the glovebox of his car

I think near the end of the story Dipper was hallucinating Bill Cipher and he shot at the hallucination. One of the other characters (I don't remember who) ran up the stairs thinking that Dipper had shot himself.

The word count would've been over 8000 words at the bare minimum, and probably no more than 80000 words (I know, wide range. i dont have the best memory :P)

I AM INDEED, anon!! I’m about 8000 words in. Multi chapter, trying not to make it more than 60-70k, but we’ll see.

P&P does have a fanfic fandom! It’s small and seems to overlap with other Jane Austen fanfic circles. It’s also so much more chill than the Harry Potter fandom 🤣

The fic is going to be multi chapter! AU, using the “compromise” trope for forced marriage, but like the other ways I use tropes they’re going to be my own and will try to rely on canon characterization as much as possible. Ex: Darcy and Elizabeth aren’t going to be suddenly overcome by feelings and start ripping each other’s clothes off. They’re going to be put in an uncomfortable situation involving fire, my other other favorite character 🔥

Hoping to be done and start posting early this summer!

“ Do you have to unbutton your shirt like that?” Wille asked, eyes trailed Simon’s bare chest.

“Why? You got a problem with this? Were you also complaining to Walter about just wearing boxers since yesterday?” Simon smirked teasingly.

“Oh he did? Hmm, I just had my eyes on you, unfortunately..” Wille joked. “Well, fortunately actually..” he corrected, sending a sheepish smile to Simon.

I should say up top I only have 3 fics currently posted, but I have quite a few WIPs as well that I don't want to abandon. Anywho:

11) What work took you the longest to write?

Probably the first one! It was the first time I'd felt compelled to write fic in over a decade and I spent forever tweaking it.

13) Not including the still developing romance trope longfic that's been dominating my efforts in the past couple weeks (over 8000 words????), the answer is also Cornerstone which I linked in the previous answer (1874 words).

Until the aforementioned longfic idea grabbed me by the throat, I said I would be shocked to write anything longer than 2000 words because I struggle with plot. That's why tropes are so handy, they give you a space to do all the other stuff like character and worldbuilding but with situations that you don't have to come up with whole cloth.

29) Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

This is an easy one to answer! It's from Ways of Wanting, a Stede subconsciously thirsty POV set after they've agreed to be co- captains through Calico Jack's nonsense. The whole thing is very image-based because that's where every story idea comes from for me.

Stede pictures Venus rising from the sea in a pillar of foam, but when the waves settle the figure standing on that scallop shell has dark hair shot through with silver and a long snake tattoo wrapping from wrist to ankle.

We now know what tattoos are on Ed's back so this is wrong, but in my fics Ed's tattoo will always cross his back to wrap around his opposite thigh because why get a long tattoo that disappears into your clothing if you're not going to get the hottest possible version?

This image popped into my head towards the end of the revision process so I'm super thankful I followed my gut and kept poking at the draft. I wrote this months before season 2 but when I tell you I screamed at the shot of Ed rising from the sea in the trailer!!!! It's also been super vindicating to see other people talk about Ed as Aphrodite on here.

I'm honestly considering commissioning someone to make my "Ed as the Birth of Venus" art dreams come true but there are so many great artists that I've been struggling to pick a style I like.

It's actually already written, but it's part of a WIP long-fic that I'm writing in Italian about the first wizarding war. English is not my first language, so I'm translating this scene and adapting it to serve as a one-shot (I've managed to write 8000 words of p*rn with little plot, but I'm getting increasingly frustrated because what sounds perfect in Italian gets a little lost in translation in English). I'll probably have to create an Ao3 account to publish, I'll link it when I'm done.

Gamma is a queen, but I don't love all of her stories/interpretations (which are still very interesting). She (I'm pretty sure her old bio said she was female) is an amazing writer though and always a pleasure from a stylistic pov. Also, she gives various interpretations of the same characters, which is something that I myself like to do, so there's always that. I agree with what you said about her being able to maintain a certain fil rouge throughout her fics.

God, I could write for hours about my Rod headcanons, but if I had to be quick (and for smut purposes) I'd say that every bit of dominance Bella asserts over him irl, he gives back to her in kind in the bedroom... once he finds out that's what she's into.

He has a soft exterior hiding a dark interior hiding a romantic at heart if it makes sense.

hello yes I greatly admire your fic writing skills! It takes me two months to write a one shot and you somehow write fics so quickly! Do you have any tips?

Aw, thank you, that's very nice of you! Believe me though, it definitely still takes me months to finish a oneshot sometimes lol. I don't know exactly what part of the writing process you're struggling with so I hope these rather generic tips I use are helpful:

Try to write daily & either don't set a word goal or make the goal ridiculously small. Writing is a skill, and just like any other skill practice makes perfect. Or keeps you from becoming rusty anyway. Do your best to write every day (but don't beat yourself up for taking a day off either). HOWEVER, my advice is to not set a specific daily word goal to strive towards. When I do that, I just become obsessed with whether I will or won't manage to hit it. I only focus on making sure I try to write daily, be it 100 words or 8000 words (both have happened).

Avoid distractions while writing!!! Local ADHD dumbass here, yes I know this one is hard and I fail at it sometimes too. But try to keep distractions while writing to a minimum. Put away your phone, make sure your music is one long playlist that won't require you to change it halfway through, stay away from social media or even the internet in general, do not get up to fetch stuff, etc. Also do not edit while you write. Just try to get words down and worry about if they're good later. And in the spirit of no distractions:

Do writing sprints. If you don't know, sprinting is where you set a timer (usually for anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes) and completely focus on the task at hand - in this case writing - during that time. After the sprint, you take a short break (ranging from 5 to 10 minutes). Then back to sprinting, and so on and so forth. This allows for what I call my reward system (again, ADHD) where I can tell myself "so for every sprint that you do, you can make one Picrew and check Tumblr during that break". Or I could get a snack. Or I can watch a funny video. Basically, anything where you can reward your brain between sprints helps. Just be careful that it doesn't make you stare at the clock all sprint long waiting to finally do fun stuff, actually write during them lol (<- has fallen into that trap before)

Write what you WANT to write. "But Shae... we're fanfic writers, we write imaginary situations for our favorite blorbos. We're always writing what we want to write." Well yes, but I mean literally in that very second make sure you're writing what you want to be writing at that exact moment. Yes, it sucks when you have three ongoing fics that really need to be updated but your brain is only yelling about a random oneshot idea you just thought of. Or worse: the one small scene in a completely different longfic that won't even happen until chapter 24. But trust me, forcing your brain to work on something it doesn't want to be writing is a pain. Just write the scene. It doesn't matter that your readers won't get to see it for weeks or even months. Just do it.

I love love love when a fanfic has a authors note a couple chapters in that says yeah this should be about 8000 words and ‘I’ll post the rest this weekend’ and then I scroll up and look at the stats saying this fic is 50000 words. Next best thing is multiple author’s notes saying whoops for the rest of the chapters.

It brings me so much joy when i see stuff like that because i love knowing that other people's stories get away from them too.

My personal favourite of this syndrome is my story Wrapped in Wool - chapter 1 says it is a one shot.

It is 150 chapters and 241k words.

I refuse to take down that perfect symbol of hubris.

A Heads Up!

Hey everyone just wanna give a update on things.

First, So the fic I wrote I'm gonna make it into a mini series out of it, so I need to do a little bit of editing to what I wrote, and it is still beta read. So its now a chapter instead of a one shot, and the first chapter is over +8000 words. I can’t wait to share it and I hope y’all like it.  

Second, I'm also still working on the nsfw comic, its me some taking time, due school and sometimes I lose motivation while working on it, but don't worry its getting done.
