Schlocktober: A Fake Event Where Anything Goes
Tumblr media
While other people are out here dropping Kinktober prompt lists with 9000 stipulations, I bring you this.
It's not a real October event, but it could be if you believe. The prompts are here for anyone to enjoy anyway.
Why "schlock"?
It means trash/junk, and that's the quality of content I'm striving for with these prompts. It's also fun to say.
But, y'know, if you want to take a prompt and turn it into a masterpiece of a whumpy longfic, go for it.
What fandom is this for?
Whatever fandom you want.
What ships can I write/draw?
Any of them.
Even [my fandom's most despised ship]?
Especially [your fandom's most despised ship].
What if I want to combine prompts? What if I want to write or draw things out of order? What if...
Go for it.
Are crossovers okay?
Do. Whatever. You. Want.
What if I want to create something problematic?
Send me the fucking link.
What does [prompt] mean?
You tell me. It's all open to interpretation.
Are there any rules at all?
Sure.
No AI use. If you need an LLM to write your schlock for you, consider a long walk off a short pier. If you need it to do your editing for you, use a beta reader instead. A stick figure drawn on the back of a napkin is better than soulless AI art.
Tag appropriately. 'Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings' means anything goes. 'No Archive Warnings Apply' means your work is guaranteed not to contain any of the major archive warnings (non-con, major character death, graphic violence, or underage sex).
No irl bigotry. Your characters can be problematic as all get out, but if you try to post a weird pro-JK Rowling essay or something you're not going in the collection, bud. Don't kill the vibes.
What are the vibes?
Just have fun.
But other people are having fun wrong!
Shut the fuck up.
Are you going to be doing this?
Probably not.
How do I participate?
There's an ao3 collection right here:
Schlocktober on ao3
Otherwise, just hashtag #schlocktober or something, idk. I don't expect anyone to actually do this.

I ONLY read kink fics when they have an EXPLICIT negotiation BEFORE the scene (reading the ao3 tags✅), a checkin DURING the scene (I didn’t tab away and continued to read👍🏼) and aftercare AFTER the scene (leaving kudos ❤️and a lil comment💬)

people really just walk into horror movies and expect them not to deal with uncomfortable things despite the genre being dedicated to discomfort.
i saw so many people complain that lisa frankenstein, a movie where one of the leads is famously a rotting corpse, was too gross for them. when i walked out of nosferatu, i heard people say that the nudity was uncalled for... in a vampire film. nudity? in MY gothic horror?! unheard of!
a LOT of people really need to accept that maybe some genres just aren't to their taste, idk. not every movie needs to be cookie-cutter clean. sexuality is a staple of gothic horror, if not the wider genre horror in General. you don't need to enjoy it, but it doesn't make these things uncalled for.

“characters in fic are too good at identifying scents” is officially an “his eyes did not literally darken” level of complaint to me now like it’s about the drama it’s about the romance it’s about atmosphere it’s about taking you to a heightened version of reality!!! please suspend your disbelief at least enough for vibes-based sensory descriptions it will be So Worth It i promise

Still obsessed with Arthur Conan Doyle’s letter to Bram Stoker gushing about how wonderful a book Dracula is, but particularly how it makes such a good template for leaving fic comments, so I’m gonna to a BREAKDOWN:
Just say you loved reading it - “I am sure that you will not think it an impertinence if I write to tell you how very much I have enjoyed reading Dracula.”
Comment on a detail of the craft or structure that impressed you - “It is really wonderful how with so much exciting interest over so long a book there is never an anticlimax.“
Comment on how it emotionally affected you - “It holds you from the very start and grows more and more engrossing until it is quite painfully vivid.”
SHARE YOUR BLORBO FEELINGS - “The old Professor is most excellent and so are the two girls.”
Show appreciation for them as an author - “I congratulate you with all my heart for having written so fine a book.”
Next time you don’t know what to say on a fic you enjoyed, just use the ACD method~

ao3 but make it tumblr - site skin
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've had several people over the years tell me I should make a site skin that makes AO3 look like tumblr. Well, I learned the float property and now here you go!
You can get these two colourways over here on github. No promises, but I might update with additional colourways in the coming days. As always, I've included instructions for how to apply a site skin if you've never used one on your account before.
I've seen some folks use the title "work is published Wednesday" and I like it, so I'm going to drop it at the end here.

For the fic asks:
🌸 ⇢ do you have any pets? if you do, post some pictures of them 🎨 ⇢ link your favourite piece of fanart and explain why you like it 🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately? ** If you don't have any pets, post a picture of something that you love
do you have any pets? if you do, post some pictures of them
This is Joey David Bowie Elvis Tofu (Joey for short and that is what happens when a 4 year old names the cat):
Tumblr media
link your favourite piece of fanart and explain why you like it
This is what came to mind. I don't know if it is my 100% fav, but first thing to pop in there. I love it because I love Sanji (though the anime does him dirty sometimes), and I love how this art makes him such a thirst trap by showing no skin at all. I love the arm garters so dang much, and the colours and the joy on his face are great.
what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?
I won't even open it if in the tags or the summary it says anything along the lines of 'I suck at tagging, I suck at summaries, this is garbage, don't read, ew cringe.' You tell me not to read your stuff, I'll believe you.
But as for click out - first person, fine reading it in novels don't want in fanfic. If in the notes it says rated E for language or violence, I am there to read them boning thank you very much. Also in the notes if it goes on and on about how this is fiction and don't have a relationship like this in real life, this is evil dirty bad wrong.
Text wise, it is mostly formatting if there are zero paragraph breaks, multiple people's dialogues in a single paragraph, that sort of stuff.

🔪🍄🍓
how did you get into writing fanfiction?
Answered but basically boredom and my general oh fuck it how hard can it be vibes.
share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings?
A:TLA Sokka actually hates tea, but everyone drinks it, hard to avoid so he deals. Zuko literally sets a team of chefs onto the problem and discovers coffee for Sokka.
what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?
Blood clots in the brain and specific types of aphasia because I didn't want my character to have the standard appendix rupture wanted a surgery that was likely to have long term impact.
Which hey, that's to that fanfic research when my husband had his stroke at the end of May and had aphasia, I was actually prepared? Go me?

Fanfic writing game! 🍓
how did you get into writing fanfiction?
Boredom.
We had just moved to Northern Canada, the truck with all our stuff which meant books, broke down and was delayed. And we didn't even have mail to get a library card yet. I began to look for free books online, and stumbled upon fanfic. I began to devour it.
Then I got pregnant, was going to be a stay at home mom until the kid was in school. I needed something to do and decided to give actually writing it a try!

Fanworks vs. Published Works
Okay, so, I was on Reddit and there was this discourse of fanfic v. published work, and how the lines are beginning to blur more and more, particularly among readers, and how dangerous this is for fandom spaces because fanfic is not designed for the same sort of engagement one has with a published work. They look similar and feel similar, but equating them can be devastating for fanfic writers, particularly if people start reviewing and critiquing fanworks the same way they do published works.
The comparison on that subreddit—which I had never encountered but might well have been around forever and new to no one but me because sometimes I do live in a cave—was that fanfic is like a potluck. And I love that because it's 100% accurate.
At a potluck, you make something for people to enjoy out of love. It’s really shitty to go to a potluck, then walk up to someone who made what you believe is a subpar casserole and start in like you’re a food critic. You’re missing the point of the potluck. And you’re kind of a dick.
In a restaurant, the rules are different, just like in the publishing industry. You select a restaurant, you pay for a meal, and if the meal isn’t to your liking, you can leave the restaurant a review on Google or Yelp or the platform of your choice (assuming you didn’t just throw a tantrum in the restaurant itself, but that’s another discussion). And sure, YMMV from other diners’ experiences, but even if everyone loves this restaurant and you don’t, it’s perfectly acceptable to leave a subpar review listing the reasons why it didn’t meet your standards. It’s fodder for future diners to consider at this point, less for the restaurant itself. The way book reviews are meant to be for readers, not the author. The author will see it, they might get annoyed, but unless they want their career to go up in smoke, they won’t respond. Just like restaurant owners who go nuclear on bad reviews, word spreads when someone can’t take criticism.
And no, it’s still not cool to critique someone’s potluck dish even if that person is a professional chef. They still elected to invest their time, talent, and creativity to bring that dish to the potluck and are getting nothing out of it but the satisfaction of their dish being enjoyed. The potluck should be a safe space for everyone—the chef knows to expect unsatisfied customers at work; when they’re at play, when they’re relaxed and enjoying something with a chosen community, it’s really shitty to start acting like a customer in the restaurant. You don’t have to love what they brought but keep it to yourself and go try something else.
As a published author, it bothers me a lot more when people invade my fanfic space to be critical than it does any of the 20+ works I have for sale on Amazon and other vendors, and this is why. Fanfic is more personal because it’s unpaid labor created out of love and a desire for community. It’s not a commodity, and treating it like that is how you murder joy and, for some creators, sometimes the drive to ever create again.
So don’t be a dick at the potluck, okay?
