Seeing if I'm still able to jump rope while (re-)listening to one of my favourite podcasts! 💪🏻
Had to find a valid substitute to my routine walk while the shooting crew is around! It didn't go too badly! 👌🏻

A Hole New World
by MadGearGames
Genre: Platformer
Pitch: An action platformer with the look, feel, and challenge of an NES game.
My expectations: NES platformers are what I'm all about.
Review:
Tumblr media
Modern NES-style games typically fall into one of two camps: So accurate they could be played on vintage hardware or so far beyond the system specs you wonder why they bothered. A Hole New World leans toward the latter. Dozens of sprites fill its 16:9 screen without flicker or slowdown, animated with far more poses than would ever fit on an old EPROM. Nevertheless, it looks right. The palette, the pixel density, the visual design—the individual elements are straight out of the eighties, and they come together beautifully.
Tumblr media
Running, jumping, and shooting feel uncannily like Mega Man, as does the way each boss leaves behind its signature weapon. The first level is an obvious Castlevania homage, with just a hint of Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins, while the second swerves toward Little Nemo: The Dream Master, further reinforced by the primary weapon’s arc and range.
Tumblr media
It’s a game built on solid influences, though the unconstrained steps toward modernity are hit and miss. Levels are needlessly sprawling. Defeated enemies stay dead, which alleviates pressure, rewarding cautious play and hurting the pacing. The lives system is…weird.
Tumblr media
It starts too easy and gets too hard, but when it’s in the zone, it’s great.
+ Take a handful of the best NES games, shake 'em up, and free them from old hardware limitations. + Looks and sounds just right. Even the optional CRT filter is tastefully subtle; a rarity in neo-retro games. + A steady rollout of new weapons and powers (as well as enemies and platforming challenges to test those weapons and powers) keeps the game interesting, while the two-button controls make it all manageable. + Frequent checkpoints and a forgiving, if rather odd, lives system for those who need it; hardcore speedrunning options for those who are not me.
– Baby-simple at the beginning, at least for experienced NES players. Hair-pulling punishment past the halfway mark. I called it quits at stage five of (I think) six. – The fourth level is so long. I'm sure it took longer than the first three combined. Really kills the momentum. – The title, A Hole New World, refers to a reverse-gravity, vertically mirrored version of the world above that's accessed by jumping or falling into the kinds of holes that typically signal instant death in platformers. It's an uninteresting gimmick, and there's rarely much reason to jump between the two. Plus, you press down to duck in both worlds, even though ducking in reverse gravity means you duck up, and my dumb brain can't handle that. – It's occasionally difficult to tell background from foreground. I jumped on a lot of spikes and dodged a lot of decorations.

The choice to put Una Chin-Reily on a Starfleet recruitment poster in the late 2370s seems a nod to the extraordinary person she is and her exemplary service, but Boimler’s enthusiasm for her as a personal hero cannot mask the fact of what Starfleet execs are really doing here: while it is Starfleet tradition to honour esteemed personnel from its centuries of history, we have to look at the poster as a product of its time: it seems clear that, shortly after the devastating death toll and the rapid militarisation of the Dominion War, putting a prominent figure of the Great Exploration Age - and notedly someone who had not served in the Klingon War - as the poster person for Starfleet is an indictment that contemporary young people of the Federation are not drawn to the service as it is in their time anymore.
Critically, Starfleet has to use somebody from a 120 years ago, a timeframe that would lap generations of even especially long lived member species like Vulcans or Denobulans, to attract new recruits. Boimler says himself that seeing Una as a representative and her motto - “Ad astra per aspera” was: “Uh, it was a really big reason why I joined.” Clearly there is a wealth of recognisable Starfleet officers from 2370 and onwards, but their entanglement in the Dominion War, or at least in the Borg threat makes them unsuitable as role models for people like Boimler who cannot help but associate these contemporaries with the horrors of war and intergalactic conflict. Thus, the retreat to a “safe” historical narrative, with Starfleet still being about peaceful exploration reflects the growing divide between the realities of a colonised galaxy, the ongoing need of new bodies to fill the posts on all those ships and space stations and the aspirations and values of young people today. In this essay I will question whether Starfleet can keep its promise of scientific integrity in the face of growing political unrest in the UFP and ask what “Number One” herself would have thought about-

A perfect combo of reminders for the start of Election Day.
Wake up to the Deep State/New Word Order while there’s still time.
Why? Cause they’re backing Kamala because she’s easy to control.

In which Ford struggles so badly to relate to other people that he wonders if he’s really human at all. The more isolated he becomes, the harder it is to reconcile with his own humanity.

People don’t talk about MC needing to wear a magical ring to not accidentally yk cause NATURAL DISASTERS with their powers??? Not only accidentally but without realising???
Diavolo or smthn is asking too much of MC or being a bit too annoying and their other hand slowly drifts towards the ring and they hold onto it while maintaining dead eye contact. Like continue to piss me off hoe I’ll blink and blow a hole in your castle idk
Obv they never do it (or do they?) but the threat is there and it’s a risk dia (or whoever but I’m using dia) can’t take

The Worst People You Have Never Met, or, What I Learned During A Four Year Academic Study of Online Harassment In The Dungeons & Dragons Community
Dr Clio Belle Weisman
From the article: Having just escaped the world of incel culture I was not much interested in the kind of people that write shitty messages on Twitter because a new Star Wars character is black. At first glance that kind of harasser seemed both relatively well-understood by my field and boring. I was more interested in those who, at least on paper, were like the people around me every day and who were what the industry claimed to want to be — creative artists, writers, progressives, feminists, LGBTQ+ folk. I know why right-wingers want to hurt diverse groups of creative people, I do not have a handle on why diverse groups of creative people hurt each other. And I desperately wanted to. This article really needs to get more traction than it is.

I truly hope Ben's girlfriend is a new character and shows up saving the nublar 6 (six). It would be so funny and epic at the same time, like, you TRULY have a girlfriend AND she's this cool??? Unbelievable!
Ben looks like a looser but he is the boyfriend of that one champion brave girl. Love that kind of trope so much
