Kinda obsessed with the historical context of Rise of the Guardians. Pitch wanting the Dark Ages to come back, which historically was the decline of culture and records. The Guardians rose at the same time as the Renaissance with the rise of culture, knowledge, and science. (Tooth in particular mentions that she hasn’t been out in the field for 440 years, give or take, which would put that smack dab in the middle of the Renaissance)
The way Pitch doesn’t want the world to change, the way the Guardians change in tune with the world. The way Jack, who lived in has a human in the 17th or 18th century, who lived in the time after the Renaissance and lived witnessing the world all the way to the modern era, is there to show the Guardians how much they missed and how they can further change and improve for the more modern world. These characters are immortal beings who have so much power over the world, it makes so much sense that when they fall and rise in power it impacts the world that they want to influence, for better or for worse.
#In the official comic where pitch is chosen as a guardian but refuses#he says that the guardians would rather put their destiny in the hands of children#instead of being the ones who influence their fates#he views it as ‘stepping back’ rather than protecting and guiding#it gives such good insight to how he views the world and his place in it#especially how he functions in history as ‘the dark ages’#And in Joanne Matte’s unofficial comics there’s an implication that the magical world has disappeared/died out because of colonization#I’m partial to that particular idea because this whole theme is very Eurocentric and the books are worse with it#it’s a contrast to the idea of the renaissance#and the ‘rebirth’ of culture#and the Guardians aren’t ‘in the field’ at that point and get caught up with their work so much#that they lost the point of why they do the work they do#to the point that Pitch can tip the scales and effect them so much#even though he cannot fight them at their full power#I really do like how they connected these characters and themes with history#it makes so much sense for immortal characters#even power struggles and scrimmages can change the world#rise of the guardians#rotg#jack frost#pitch black#sanderson mansnoozie#e. aster bunnymund#toothiana#nicholas st. north

werewolf bernard x witch tim
#thinking of this in terms of bitten wolf bernard who seeks out tim bc he’s the most proficient at potions and remedies#looking for a cure bc he already doesnt feel normal or like he fits in society and this has just amplified that to the extreme#not feeling like himself and just massive amounts of discomfort in his body bc of the changes that he’s facing#heightened senses and a deep yearning for some type of connection (wolfs are pack animals)#and tim who has to break the new that bernard’s stuck with this for the rest of his life#but who doesnt want him to go through this alone bc he knows what thats like and he doesnt wish that on anyone#guiding him through all the changes and slowly filling that sense of pack to bernard#tim who has closed himself off and exist in this little corner of the world to limit any type of socialization bc of a accident that happen#early in him coming into his magic#them helping each other bernard learning to live with his new normal and tim learning its okay to lean on others#blah blah blah#im literally just yapping in these tags (sorry)#they really could work for any type of supernatural pairing#i just really like the idea of werewolf bernard#timbern#timber#bernard dowd#tim drake#dc

im being a hater but is always astounding how many people like. did not listen to solas or pay attention to what's going on with him. and then proceed to try and start fights about him. like it's so okay to not care about or dislike a character -- there are FOR SURE characters i do not give a shit about and i simply ignore them. but you look sooooo stupid. you look like you don't know how to listen dude. it's not even that your reading comprehension is bad its your LISTENING comprehension. he TELLS you what hes doing. fully voice acted. go back to third grade dude.
#solas: yeah i fucked up a bajillion years ago and created the veil while trying to save my people#but now the world is unnaturally deprived of magic and it's rotting and the veil is also failing#and the spirits are so desperate to touch the waking world from the prison (?) i accidentally put them in that they're risking corruption#so i do feel like i have to fix this. ideally while guiding it i'll be able to cause as little damage as possible#though it's still going to be catastrophic. i wish there were a way around this but there really isn't#some guy on reddit who skipped all his dialogue: yeah solas is actively evil and wants to commit a genocide. i def know what that word mean#ok hater behavior over#carly.txt

THE ORDER OF PALMS An order of holy folk that serve The Helm, working to create powerful Aasimar Paladins for the purpose of protecting any who hire their help. [BACKSTORY UNDER CUT]
One day, Gjör and her peers were lead by their mentor Opheria, to a mission far from their home. On the peak of that mountain village, they saw upon the horizon, the castle of their home go up in flames. Horrified and scared, the apprentices sought to follow their mentors guidance, and followed her lead into a small barn. It was there, that Opheria proceeded to slaughter each and everyone of the apprentices. It seemed she somehow had a hand in this sudden attack on the Order of Palms. Gjör D'annevual survived a sword through the 'heart', on account of a rare condition, that places her heart on the other side of her chest. When she finally managed to bring herself back home, the Order was insulted by her survival. She had so many better peers, why couldn't any of them have survived? This runt was seriously the only thing that survived Opherias wrath? It was better to just wash their hands clean of this. Thus the Order decided to banish Gjör from their ranks. She now travels the land in search of a purpose.

The funniest thing about the book I'm reading rn is that one of the characters is always like " oh I love my pop :) my dad's so great, love that guy❤️" and whenever he gets mentioned it's like oh you mean fancylad fop from the previous book who gets pegged by his wife????? 😭

the witcher official cookbook is good of course, but i am fully aware of myself that i bought this not for its recipes, but entirely just to read maybe like, a little less than four pages of sapkowski talking about how much he likes making soup
#also to support the legitimacy of witcher because all fantasy medias have not just A Map now but another thing: A Cookbook#there’s also those ‘official guides to the world of…’ but ive found they take the magic away not introduce more#like the recipes look good and everything and i like to cook and bake indeed but i actually just needed to access more soup lore#the fact that he mentioned the beauclair feast was an added surprise and made me smile so much my cheeks hurt#me: ‘i wish someone else besides me would remember beauclair in winter in lady of the lake’ | the actual author: i rember.#calanthe mentioned. beauclair mentioned. fish soup mentioned. thats basically all i want#i already knew that the fish soup was his own recipe because he said it in the f8 key interview like over 20 years ago#but that he bragged about it again was nice#he’s too funny. ‘epicurian physiques’ had me rolling#the elbow-high diaries

Rowaelin Chapter 41 Kingdom of Ash:
She'd rebuild it—what she had been.
Perhaps one last time, perhaps only for a little while, but she'd do it. If only for Terrasen.
Rowan swooped from the mast, shifting as he reached her side at the rail. He surveyed the night-black sea beyond them. "You should rest." She slid him a glance. "I'm not tired." Not a lie, not in some regards. "Want to spar?" He frowned. "Training can start tomorrow."
"Or tonight." She held his piercing stare, matched his dominance with her own.
"It can wait a few hours, Aelin."
"Every day counts." Against Erawan, even a day of training would count.
Rowan's jaw tightened. "True," he said at last. "But it can still wait. There are ... there are things we need to discuss." The silent words rose in his animal-bright eyes. About you and me.
Her mouth went dry. But Aelin nodded In silence, they strode into their spacious quarters, its only decoration the wall of windows that overlooked the churning sea behind them. A far cry from a queen's chamber, or any she might have purchased as Adarlan's assassin.
At least the bed built into the wall looked clean enough, the sheets crisp and stainless. But Aelin headed for the oak desk anchored to the floor, and leaned against it while Rowan shut the door.
In the dim lantern light, they stared at each other.
She'd endured Maeve and Cairn; she'd endured Endovier and countless other horrors and losses. She could have this conversation with him. The first step toward rebuilding herself.
Aelin knew Rowan could hear her thundering heart as the space between them went taut. She swallowed once. "Elide and Lorcan told you... told you everything that was said on that beach."
A curt nod, wariness flooding his eyes. "Everything that Maeve said." Another nod.
She braced herself. "That I'm-we're mates."
Understanding and something like relief replaced that wariness. "Yes."
"I'm your mate," she said, needing to voice it. "And you are mine."
Rowan crossed the room, but halted a few feet from the desk on which she leaned. "What of it, Aelin?" His question was low, rough.
"Don't you..." She scrubbed at her face. "You know what she did to you, to ..." She couldn't say her name. Lyria. "Because of it."
"I do know."
"And?"
"And what do you wish me to say?"
She pushed off the desk. "I wish you to tell me how you feel about it. If…"
"If what?"
"If you wish it wasn't so."
His brows narrowed. "Why would I ever wish that?"
She shook her head, unable to answer, and stared over her shoulder toward the sea.
It seemed like he would close the distance between them, but he remained where he was.
"Aelin." His voice turned hoarse. "Aelin."
She looked at him then, at the pain in his words.
"Do you know what I wish?" He exposed his palms, one tattooed, the other unmarked. "I wish that you had told me. When you realized it. I wish you had told me then."
She swallowed against the ache in her throat. "I didn't want to hurt you."
"Why would it ever hurt me to know the truth that was already in my heart? The truth I hoped for?"
"I didn't understand it. I didn't understand how it was possible. I thought maybe ... maybe you might be able to have two mates within a lifetime, but even then, I just ….." She blew out a breath. "I didn't want you to be distressed." His eyes softened. "Do I regret that Lyria was dragged into this, that the cost of Maeve's game was her life, and the life of the child we might have had? Yes. I regret that, and I wish it had never happened." He would bear the tattoo to remember it for the rest of his days. "But none of that was your fault. I will always carry some of the burden of it, always know I chose to leave her for war and glory, and that I played right into Maeve's hands."
"Maeve wanted to ensnare you to get to me, though."
"Then it is her choice, not yours."
Aelin ran a hand over the worn wood of the desk. "In those illusions she spun for me, she showed me variations on one more than all the others." The words were strained, but she forced them out. Forced herself to look at him. "She spun me one dreamscape that felt so real I could smell the wind off the Staghorns."
"What did she show you?" A breathless question.
Aelin had to swallow before she could answer. "She showed me what might have been—if there had been no Erawan, if Elena had dealt with him properly and banished him. If there had been no Lyria, none of that pain or despair you endured. She showed me Terrasen as it would have been today, with my father as king, and my childhood happy, and..." Her lips wobbled. "When I turned twenty, you came with a delegation of Fae to Terrasen, to make amends for the rift between my mother and Maeve. And you and I took one look at each other in my father's throne room, and we knew."
She didn't fight the stinging in her eyes. "I wanted to believe that was the true world. That this was the nightmare from which I'd awaken. I wanted to believe that there was a place where you and I had never known this suffering and loss, where we'd take one look at each other and know we were mates. Maeve told me she could make it so. If I gave her the keys, she'd make it all possible." She wiped at her cheek, at the tear that escaped down it. "She spun me realities where you were dead, where you'd been killed by Erawan and only in handing over the keys to her would I be able to avenge you. But those realities made me ... I stopped being useful to her when she told me you were gone. She couldn't get me to talk, to think. Yet in the ones where you and I met, where things were as they should have been ... that was when I came the closest."
His swallow was audible. "What stopped you?"
She wiped at her face again. "The male I fell in love with was you. It was you, who knew pain as I did, and who walked with me through it, back to the light. Maeve didn't understand that. That even if she could create that perfect world, it wouldn't be you with me. And I'd never trade that, trade this. Not for anything." He extended his hand. An offer and invitation.
Aelin laid hers atop his, and his callused fingers squeezed gently. "I wanted it to be you," he breathed, closing his eyes. "For months and months, even in Wendlyn, I wondered why you weren't my mate instead. It tore me up, wondering it, but I still did." He opened his eyes, and they burned like green fire. "All this time, I wanted it to be you."
She lowered her gaze, but he hooked a thumb and forefinger around her chin and lifted her face.
"I know you are tired, Fireheart. I know that the burden on your shoulders is more than anyone should endure." He took their joined hands and laid them on his heart. "But we'll face this together. Erawan, the Lock, all of it.
"We'll face it together. And when we are done, when you Settle, we will have a thousand years together. Longer."
A small sound came out of her. "Elena said the Lock requires—"
"We'll face it together," he swore again.
"And if the cost of it truly is you, then we'll pay it together. As one soul in two bodies.
Her heart strained to the point of cleaving. "Terrasen needs a king."
"I have no intention of ruling Terrasen without you. Aedion can have the job."
She scanned his face. He meant every word He brushed the hair from her face, his other hand still clasping hers to his chest, where his heart pounded a steady, unfaltering rhythm.
"Even if I had my choice of any dream-realities, any perfect illusions, I would still choose you, too."
She felt the truth of his words echo into the unbreakable thing that bound their very souls, and tilted her face up toward his. But he made no move beyond it.
She frowned. "Why aren't you kissing me?"
"I thought you might want to be asked first."
"That never stopped you before."
"This first time, I wanted to make sure you were ... ready." After Cairn and Maeve. After months of having no choices whatsoever.
She smiled despite that truth. "I'm ready to be kissed again, Prince."
He let out a dark chuckle and muttered, "Thank the gods," before he lowered his mouth to hers.
"You're my mate." Her words were a breathless rush. "And I am yours."
The world might have been burning around them for all she cared, all he cared, too.
"Together, Aelin," he promised, and she heard the rest of the words in every place their bodies joined. Together they would face this, together they would find a way.
Together we'll find a way, their mingling breaths, the crashing sea, seemed to echo.
Together.

I genuinely wonder how many people know that the Saint Spell’s Love Guide game is based on like. A closed (not accepting new entries) roleplay group on Deviantart
And one of the devs who made the game is Bugbear’s mun
Like there is lore
There’s so much lore and so many characters that weren’t in the game
So much art too
Every time I think about it it drives me insane
#saint spells love guide#saint spells’s love guide to the magical student’s handbook#sslg#that’s the main reason i cant bring myself to make an oc for this world#even if i make an oc for every fandom im in#because these are actual characters played by actual people#its too close to the creators#and its a closed group too it just feels#idk a weird disrespect thing? for me to just insert this… new character?#drives me up the wall honestly

there's another ranchers/zits/giggs au story concept in my head i've been playing with, so let's-- just call this a demo.
Feel free to send asks or just give general feedback, not only will it help me to flesh out the au more, it'll also give me more ideas on where to go. I've seen similar aus out there, but nothing quite like this one-- or having all the same concepts as this one. If people like it, I might turn it into an actual longfic. but i tend to run out of steam on my longfics (mostly due to a lack of interaction tbh. if no one else is excited about my au, then it's not worth pursuing, right? but that's my problem and something I have to work through myself, not something for anyone else to fix)
Anyway.
This is a thing.
The moment Jimmy laid eyes on Tango, he knew something was-- off-- about him.
They'd met him in a tavern, in the small town that lay below the abandoned Deepfrost Citadel. Jimmy's adventuring troupe had been commissioned with finding an artifact in the Citadel, and bringing it back to its rightful owner. The bounty offered would be enough to pay off the troupe's debts and much much more. When they'd asked around for any sort of maps, or a guide, the tavern keeper had pointed them over to Tango.
"He's the only one to have ever made it out of that cursed place alive." The dwarf had told them, pointing to where their future guide was sitting in the corner, "If you want a guide, he's the only one who can."
Jimmy's sense for danger had shivered up his spine and stolen his breath the moment he looked over. But-- no one in his troupe paid any attention to him anyway.
Besides, the negotiations had gone well, Tango seemed amical enough, and no one else seemed to have a problem with him. It was only Jimmy, and his overzealous avian anxiety. They would pay Tango half his fee up front, and half when they got back to the village safely.
It took them half a week to get up to the Citadel, and that was with the help and knowledge of Tango as their guide. Jimmy kept him at arms' length, not quite knowing why but deciding to trust his gut on this one. Tango was dangerous, in a way that he couldn't figure out. He'd brought it up to the others in his troupe, but none of them believed him. They all loved Tango. He was clever, quick to laugh and even quicker to crack a joke, and ever so useful.
By the time they made it to the door of the Citadel, Tango had become an invaluable member of the troupe.
Tango disappeared that first night, spent barricaded in an outlying tower and hoping not to freeze to death. Jimmy had been on watch, and between one glance and the next, Tango hadn't been in his bedroll anymore.
But-- he'd been right back in the morning, acting like Jimmy didn't know what he was talking about.
It was the little things that kept setting Jimmy on edge. Tango knew a little too much about the Citadel, he'd found the 'hidden' door to the crypts too easily, had pushed the troupe to descend into the depths faster than was safe, not letting them scout it with a familiar like they normally would. He could pick the locks almost like he had a silent knock spell in his fingers, and somehow knew his way through the maze of icy caverns like the back of his hand.
And every night, after everyone was asleep, he disappeared. Jimmy was the only one who noticed. No one else believed him either, did they just-- not notice the empty bedroll when they were on watch?
When they finally believed him, it wasn't until Tango disappeared for good. One morning, he just-- didn't come back.
Then the monsters started appearing.
One thing lead to another as they pressed deeper and deeper into the dungeon under the Citadel, icy crypts full of wraiths and furry beasts morphing into wet caverns covered in mushrooms and a pirate ship complete with it's undead crew; leading down into black mines that had supposedly been blocked off by cave ins over a hundred years ago-- and before they knew it they'd lost a member of the troupe-- their healer-- and then they were tripping tail over teakettle into a maze so dark and cold that even those in the troupe with darkvision couldn't see.
It spat them out into a chamber not unlike the throne room found mirrored high above in the Deepfrost Citadel. It was full of gold and magic and things that would make any adventurer drool at the prospect of having them to keep.
Jimmy hadn't felt 'safe'-- not since he'd first met Tango in that tavern all those weeks ago-- but the sense of someone watching them stayed his hand.
The rest of the troupe had gotten busy, plundering everything in reach and searching for the artifact they'd been sent to collect.
But not Jimmy.
When asked why he wasn't stuffing his pockets with gold, he waved off the troupe with the excuse of keeping watch. After all, there were the monsters to contend with still--
Tango's giggle seemed to come from everywhere at once.
"Oh, you really should have listened to poor, sweet Jimmy when you had the chance~"
And suddenly Tango was there, on the throne in the center of the room, but instead of the blond, brown-eyed and rough-hewn guide they'd come to know and trust, it was a creature made of frost and shadows.
Jimmy's heart dropped out his stomach.
"Dragon--!"
Oh, they were dead.
Scratch that. Apparently everyone but Jimmy was dead.
Not like that was much better.
#team rancher#team rancher au#jimmy solidarity#tangotek#viviwrites#a new au#dragonfrost au#dont mind me#if you have questions#just ask#its sorta a dnd adjacent world#Tango would be the rough equivalent of a silver dragon.#for anyone curious#the longfic would be more of a play on the dungeon guide jimmy aus i've seen#where he 'guides' an adventuring parties to their deaths to protect tango and the hoard.#but instead its the giggs crew (+ maybe pearl?) and they are just here to explore. (and also find jimmy)#(they don't know jimmy is jimmy because dragon magic)#and tango just wants friends. mostly#but most 'mortals' he meets are selfish and greedy#leading them to his hoard is a test.

I guess the thing with Discworld reading order is like. There's a lot of variety and Pratchett does a lot of different things/offers a lot of different experiences under the umbrella of "Discworld." And Discworld fans are passionate enough about the books and aware enough of how niche/out there they might seem that it makes said fans really invested in giving new readers the right introduction to Discworld. Making sure they read the Best Stuff or the stuff most likely to appeal to them, so they'll appreciate it all.
But. But. Have a little more faith in potential readers, maybe? On this website especially - but also generally in any circles where you're likely to receive Pratchett recommendations - I feel like if you've heard the books recced once, you've heard it a couple dozen times, and in terms of very high praise. At which point, if you're interested in checking out the books, you're probably also interested enough to give them a fair shot if the first couple you try don't grab you. If you don't get the Perfect Introductory Experience you're probably still going to keep reading, right? If you're not actively turned off?
I started with Colour of Magic because it was the first book written and I like knowing that I'm not missing anything. I love Rincewind, I was intrigued and amused by the writing, and it also was definitely not High Art. I kept going because I'd been recommended Discworld, and I wasn't going to stop because the first few books were "only" clever and entertaining sword-and-sorcery parodies. I was along for the ride. I wanted to explore.
And the other thing is that the reading charts are fun, but they make it seem like the initial reading order matters so much more than it does? Every book stands well on its own, pretty much, and certainly none of them need complete context. Anything set in Ankh-Morpork is going to give general spoilers for the books before it - mostly in terms of "who's alive, who's in the Watch now, what infrastructure changes have been created" - but they don't spoil plots or book-level arcs. I read several Watch and Witches books out of order, because I got impatient waiting for access, and it didn't ruin anything significant for me.
Anyway. Discworld reading order doesn't matter and that's why there are so many options. Publication order is a fun and valid road to take. Picking up whatever you can get your hands on easily will also work. If you want to read Pratchett, then literally all there is to it is reading Pratchett.
#i just feel like there's this ANXIETY to all the Reading Order Guides and i don't know that it's necessary#(but also start with color of magic because my boy rincewind deserves more appreciation in the world)
