Unsure if nightlight only interacting with kids/avoiding adults in the early days has more to do with the adults in his life being abusive, a specific trauma like Pitch’s attack, him not knowing how to interact with people other than children/not being permitted to interact with anyone but the children… or all of the above?
Like I get it’s not that deep but, also, it is to me. This is how I choose to vibe with him. His trauma is so delicious i want to know more. What the fuck was happening in the Golden Ages??

love was always hard to feel, for jack
admiration, that’s easy.
the frosted illustrations on pine and glass alike brought forth joy; knowing, that the little doodles and curves and shapes he created could be seen even if he can’t be.
a mother whispering lullabies into her child’s ears as they fell asleep, that’s where admiration and peace come from.
but love? love escaped his grasp countless times. there was no love for the man in the moon. his silence brought no olive branch to try to create a loving relationship. he had no family, no childhood, only the freezing hold of his pond before he awoke to silver tinted rays of moonlight pulling him into the air.
maybe the affection he held for the wind counted as love, though. and the pride he felt for the children he goaded into snowball fights could, too. watching a kid build their first snowman, laughing in delight at their creation—that could be love, maybe.
but it was through a window that jack felt the love. the wind could hold him and whisper wispy nothings into his ears, caressing his skin and ruffling his hair, that could be love, too. a kinship that was wordless and truly the closest he could reach to be loved and to love.
but… what was love, really?
jack had no one to remember with wistful sighs, no one to share his first kiss with. how many firsts does he have, and not have? did he have a lover before he was jack frost? was there a life he had before he was woken up? was he born? or was he made, like other elemental sprites? but even they were born, in their own special ways.
maybe jack wasn’t meant to find love, to learn about its quirks and oddities. the closest he would come to knowing and understanding love is with the wind. the wind, who has many sides and personalities. jack could come to learn those sides more, as he has for the past however many years. some parts of the wind jack knew best, others he didn’t know at all.
in truth, jack felt he was destined to be loveless. it’s not easy to consider an element to be his first love. not… not a lustful love, not a fanciful one. how would he truly know those, anyways? but a love of familiarity, of no conditions. one born from time, of countless adventures and sights shared.

My friend used to doodle on my hand during our free time so I'm projecting that trait on Bunny.

oh it’s time to share my favorite quote from this book series
Tumblr media
ik i just said that goc is a kids book but then they'll go and use words like "legerdemain" and i really fucking doubt who the intended audience even is
#the intended audience is William Joyce#and me who is very entertained by Joyce’s creative decisions#This is the same man who put Winston Churchill in his books and referenced Dorian Gray in his CHILDREN’S book#When I first read the books I was in middle school. I had to look up who Rudyard Kipling was and it said he wrote the jungle book#And I was like. “Huh okay? Sure?” with my only frame of reference being the Disney film. I didn’t really care lmao#I knew jm berrie tho bc i read Peter Pan before reading goc#Now I’m actually studying literature and I’m so confused on why he put all those people in there#And like. The vocab. Joyce. What do you think a seven year old will understand??????#Like I actually laughed when Sandy explained the Great Depression. It’s my fav bc it’s so egregious#You can’t even use context clues to understand any word in that sentence because it’s all complex vocabulary for a kid#Joyce did you know eight year olds are learning how to spell “above” “egg” and “butterfly”#Do you know who your audience is???#On one hand you have his background in picture books which influences how he crafts the story#It’s very reminiscent to picture books at points#And then on the other hand you have…that#References to classic lit and huge vocab words that will confuse kids#Children are not reading Oscar Wilde sorry Joyce. Children have no idea what legerdemain means#I lowkey love it tho#It’s entertaining in a way that was not intended but it makes me cackle#guardians of childhood

Okay *rubs hands together* how about a final showdown with this week's winners
Professor Logan v Bunny v Leopold v PT Barmun...
I have a theory who will win but given how fun these have been to watch, I think we need the ultimate winner.
Anon, I love you 🥰 poll after the pics - just go with what feels right 😁

kinda insane that goc literally says that the "good guys" of the golden age "entombed" all of the criminals in eternal darkness that reduced them to shadows of themselves...
i kinda wish we stuck with the original thought that pitch opened the cell to "let in some air" because at least then it sounds like he had sympathy for them or disagreed a little with their treatment? go for the 180 character arc from golden boy to political rebel. hell, even insisting on taking that post could have been a line up to a really interesting struggle!
alas it is a children's book!
but that on top of the slavery of the nightlights.. the golden age isn't really looking so golden?

it's not really talked about in goc fandom but ... nightlight was essentially a slave?
like he and all the other nightlights were born into servitude to protect a child. they had to care for them all night, every night, likely longer since infants sleep more often. they had to stay with them or near them all the time...
idk, they were slaves? and somehow the narrative completely glosses over this fact and goes "oh but how beautiful the golden age was!"
no? you just established that the most "beloved" and royal family of the golden age employed child slaves, that then ritualistically killed themselves once they weren't needed anymore???
and nightlight canonically rarely ever speaks because he had to be quiet for the baby to sleep. he only speaks when he has to even after he's freed from his service!
and then he also canonically distrusts most “tall ones” and only really likes the “small ones”?? what were these grown adults doing that made him feel uncomfortable around any adult he didn’t know?
excuse me????
#Sigh#I’m actually writing an essay about how goc deals with childhood and I do point this out#I just haven’t been able to complete it bc college life is not a fun life#There’s some very interesting implications about the world building if this group of people#whose entire existence is meant to protect children#turn around and have children in their ranks#To have a man who wants to desperately to protect children#But allow children to fight his fights#to have the goal of a perfect utopia but said “utopia” had children being soldiers and slaves#Nightlight in particular is a haunting reminder of how chalk full of imperialism goc is#He’s jealous of other kids. He wants to be a normal kid. He actively wants to be an different species bc of what being a nightlight entails#Even without the retconned lore of the fifth book it’s so tragic#bc like. He’s a slave who’s doomed to be a caretaker even though he cannot be more than 11 years old. He was literally made to be that.#he spends years being lonely and sad once the baby grows up and he isn’t needed anymore until a new baby arrives and he’s happy again???#he has an entire crisis when Katherine turns 12 bc he doesn’t want to be left behind again.#He’s so used to being in service that he needs to attach himself to Katherine just to gain some familiarity and now he’s losing it#and with the fifth book and the whole one nightlight per generation thing. God.#nightlights are viewed as expendable weapons that disappear when no longer needed instead of children. Were they second class citizens?#Were they treated like children by the people of the golden age? Were they treated like property?#why did they essentially kill themselves when the baby grows up? I know they become stars and are still somewhat alive but like.#They either break their oath completely or they have to turn into a star??? They can’t just… be kids?#They have to either be in service or be nothing? They have to find a new oath just to become someone? They can’t be a somebody inherently?#Despite being painted as a perfect utopian space society and being presented as the most important and “good” as anyone can ever get…#…the golden age clearly had no qualms against child labor#Even when Joyce addresses a slave as a slave (Haroom) he paints it as “oh it’s ok bc they’re friends”#and then proceeds to have the slave owner kill the slave with zero remorse (twice!!!)#It’s totally not like India has a very real problem (both historic and modern!) with slavery#Joyce has a problem and we should talk about it more honestly.#Nightlight#guardians of childhood
