Look my favourite 'Starscream joins the Autobots' concept involves him absolutely playing up his victimhood in a manipulative attempt to win sympathy. He's a Decepticon! He's Starscream. Of course he does! He will act however weak and vulnerable he needs to, in order to achieve his ends.

This gives him a fascinating duality. He's a Machiavellian selfish would-be-tyrant who fucking dares the Autobots to feel sorry for him; while at the same time, he's a wheedling, snivelling mess, making puppy-dog eyes as he cunningly reveals tailored scraps of his abusive relationship with Megatron to win over the 'soft-sparked' Autobots.

Everything he shares is true.

In fact, things with Megatron were probably even worse than he portrays, albeit more complex - i.e., with far more goading and violence on his side, but which in NO WAY justified the ghastly abuse he was subjected to.

This is a way for him to feel like he's in control of the shit that's been done to him. If he's using his victim status as a weapon, it feels like it's his. He's taken possession of it. He's made it into something more powerful, in his mind (even if this defence tactic kinda... prevents him from fully recognising that what happened to him was actually really really awful).

I wish more fics engaged with this aspect of his character, where he's PERFECTLY WILLING to go 'OH THE ABUSE. OH I HAVE SUFFERED' if it'll get him ahead in life, while perhaps not even fully understanding just how much trauma he's gone through.

If Alice were to time it— time the seconds between first introductions, and when her mother would have realized what personal reasons were involved— she was certain she'd be able to tick the seconds off on two hands.

Maybe even one.

"I used to think she was a mind-reader." Alice's lips twitch. "When I was little, I was very certain she had a secret third eye that could see into my brain. So I'm very certain she would ... just know."

Just know what? How Alice, a determined student, would probably get distracted in class because of Jack? Would be secretly hanging on to his every word, despite how she'd sigh? How she'd gravitate towards him at every rally, every game, every group project?

Alice kicks her legs idly over the overhang.

Then again— if her mother was a mind-reader, they would both have ended up in very serious trouble.

'And I think that’s why she would’ve liked me. For personal reasons.'

She snorts.

"You think you would have been her favorite because I—"

Ooh. A lot of ways to finish that sentence.

A beat. Alice's eyes finally detach from where they were staring down at the pool, gaze sweeping to asses Jack carefully. Their hands were still conjoined. His hand kept hers warm, even as the breeze blowing over the falls was sharp and cool.

A lot of hand-holding, today.

Day two.

Alice's mouth clips shut, and then opens again.

"I should have known you'd want special treatment. For personal reasons."

Even with Alice avoiding his gaze, Jack smiled. He kept his eyes on her profile — her perfect nose and mouth. He was certain that he could stare forever.

"...I don't know. If I skipped school to hold your hand at the dentist she'd probably get the idea pretty fast."

Jack smiled. Yeah, no doubt her mother would catch on. Jack wondered what his own mother would think of Alice. His mother was … harsh about the women that Jack dated. They were never “good enough for her boy.” Her words, not Jack’s, but something told him that she’d like Alice. Even if she didn’t — well. Jack would’ve set her straight.

Only Jack and Alice weren’t even dating, so he wasn’t sure why he’d even started to think about introducing Alice to his mother.

“Yeah, I bet your mom would’ve caught on so fast.”

Jack thought that if he knew Alice back then, he absolutely would’ve had a crush on her. A massive one. The kind that interrupted his train of thought in the middle of a lesson. The kind that he broke rules for.

“And I think that’s why she would’ve liked me. For personal reasons.”

Those reasons being...? Well, obviously her mother would have to be nice the the guy that was crushing on her daughter.
