Zorpian species ref sheet 1

I... THEY'RE IN MY HEAD AND I CAN'T GET THEM OUT decided to start making a ref sheet for an alien species I have called zorpians (really original, ik)--and I'm having sm fun. I plan to make more since this is only how to draw them THEMSELVES! I've still got a ref sheet I wanna do for their customs/beliefs, their uniforms / rankings, and their planet-- THERE'S SO MUCH IN MY HEAD

my original species, Atir! they are fuzzy, super tall, three eyed, horned aliens from an outer space planet called Biitira!

their planet is home to over seven separate species of sapient Atir, all of which live peacefully on the planet without disrupting the natural order. the majority of them are nomads, never settling in one place for long and nomadic villages consist of at least two families.

Ritual Cannibalism: When Endfolk die, the others in their haunting will hold a mass feast of their flesh of their flesh to celebrate their life. Anything not eaten will be used for architecture, tools, or the creation of other sentimental items that are kept by the kin of the deceased.

The Importance of Sex in Endfolk Culture: Sexual intercourse is not as taboo to Endfolk as it is to others. Casual sex is used as a form of social bonding between members of a haunting. Knotting, however, is saved for heat/rut season and is considered a sacred act between mates. Endfolk knots can stay inflated for up to an hour to guarantee conception. Once fertilized, the eggs, usually one to three, will incubate inside the Endfolk's "womb" for one week before being laid and looked after for the rest of their gestation period.

Was recently asked about my guidelines for the Flute Dragon species. 

Feel free to ignore any details that don't interest you. I've seen people make flutes that don't follow the "rules" and even I have a few that don't. Can just chalk it up to genetic mutations/variation or cross-breeding, or whatever.

Arinteil li Atchi is the official lead captain of the Queteran Empire, certified by the Intergalactic Committee. They are known for their charm and respectful treatment of the cultures of many different species. Visits from Arinteil often accrue a large crowd of all sorts.

Arinteil is a member of a bipedal (though also facultatively quadrupedal), two armed species with a tail and stalk eyes. They have black, armored backs, gray bellies, green facial and tail spikes, and green radial mandibles. Their feet are armored and black, but their hands lack armor (though still black). The eye stalks are quite flexible, despite being armored on the sides facing out, and their eyelids close vertically. The species can also spray toxic tears out of the top corner of their eyes.

Arinteil is slightly bigger and stronger built than average members of their species, and their facial plate has accents of green instead of gray. Whether this is a cosmetic choice or a trait they were born with is not publicly known. The green spike on their tail is also larger than average. Among their species, these traits are found attractive.

The ØØZEWØLF!!!

After sharing my art of Møselle a bit ago, it got me thinking that I’ve never made a proper reference for the Øøzewølf itself, so I decided it was about time to change that!

The one part of the design that I was most unsure about was the legs/feet. I wanted them to somehow evoke some kind of insect, but having straight-up spider legs or whatever didn’t feel right. This version of the limbs is one I’m super happy with, especially the more raptor arm-like middle limbs. It uses these both to grasp its prey once it has pounced on it, but also to push off the ground, further increasing its running speed.

Zorpian species ref 2: Uniforms!

Zorpians overall like to fit in--many see themselves as part of a unit rather than an individual. So to both fit in and not stress out over what to wear to work, zorpians wear uniforms! Ranking, status, and other factors are added onto their chest plates, shoulder pads, belts, etc. to differentiate themselves, but these are the basic looks of these uniforms.

These uniforms also work as spacesuits, just add a helmet and BOOM! Space ready :3

ignore that last post. here are my design notes on how i draw + portray mules, plus some explantions/info/headcanons that didn't fit on the sheet under the cut

so the mules we have in canon arent all that great . they look identical to donkeys (and are always the punchline to a joke like our poor friend here)

so like a sane mlp fan i sunk 2 hours into designing a mule !

i used a random background mare and cranky doodle as refs bc mules are a male donkey and a female horse. i tried to pick a couple of the most notable traits from each.

then i put the donkey legs on the front bc of this quote i found on wikipedia while researching about mules (and hinnies, which are a female donkey + male horse)

i was a little conflicted on how the face would look but i decided to lean more pony like because i like the idea of a mule being able to pass as a pony from a distance. i suspect some mules do pass as ponies with if their coats are light enough and their snouts lean a little more ponylike...*cough cough wink wink*

on that note, smthn i also didnt get to mention is that a mule's mane tends to curl ! i based this on mulia and matilda's manes (even though matilda's mane is straight in her flashback but shh.)

as for naming conventions, i'd guess that there are a lot of second generation mules with names like miracle, serendipity, and blessing bc their births are a big deal. first gen mules seem to favor m sounds in canon (mulia). with most of the mothers of mules being earth ponies i can see ponylike names being quite popular for their babies

Cool sea slug fact: this one’s based off the Nembrotha kubaryana, which also looks like it glows a little, as it has ✨neon colors!✨

I drew this not only to fight off the art block but also because I’ll be doing a species sheet in the future for slugterrians! Yes that whole entire species I made for a Balan wonderworld au 💖 praying I can get that and the heartbreakers’ refs done and posted before July 😰

Now to tell you about Rathis! Two of my main characters are Rathis Sisters and they're very important to me.

Thiran is the Rathis Homeworld and it's got very few oceans, not a lot of tectonic activity, and fewer species of large flora than most worlds (though plenty of large fauna) meaning big open fields and a bigger advantage to species able to traverse them. Thus Rathis' most iconic and pretty much important trait, their speed and the feet that give it to them. Like many species on earth, Rathis back legs technically walk on their 'toes' and are digitigrade. Their claws are not retractable and are primarily used to dig into the ground like cleats for running. Their calves are short, thick, and some of the strongest muscles ever recorded.

Their tails are prehensile, but are mostly used for balance and as counterweights to increase their turning ability while running. Thus the end being a thick cap bone rather than tapering off.

Rathis are diurnal obligate carnivores, hunting at night as much as day, napping usually for 3-5 hours at somewhat random intervals. This means their sight can adjust to night or day, and lacks some fidelity compared to humans. Lower ability to differentiate colors, but higher ability to detect movement and see in the dark. Their hearing is extremely strong to the point they can rely on it almost as much as humans do sight to detect prey and threats. While their nose is mostly used for ventilation and oxygen intake while running, they have some ability to track by smell when going after smaller, slower prey.

Because of Rathis' ability to naturally traverse long distances, their melanin production is extremely varied depending on the amount of sunlight they've been to exposed to in the last month. The same Rathis can be the entire range of skin tones most humans are by tanning or lack thereof. Like humans they are furless, but they grow hair on top of their heads, the back of their ears, their shoulders, back and sometimes at the end of their tail. The same places you will find their patterns if they have one. This is more common in male Rathis, but it is not natural for them to grow facial hair. While their hair and pattern colors are sometimes the same color, and are from the same sort of keratin production, therefore are only naturally the colors shown, they can differ and contrast from each other.

They are comparable to mammals, and sexually reproduce mostly like humans, but tend to have litters of 3-5 at a time.

Because of their lack of environmental manipulation, (Rathis prefer to migrate when uncomfortable rather than try to force the place they're in to be more comfortable.) and somewhat sparse adornments on their warm world, Rathis were assumed to be non-sapient. This went on for many years, in which time they were a prized hunting trophy due to the danger and their cleverness, until some unfortunate incidents kidnapping and raising Rathis cubs, only to find them quickly picking up their captor's language.

Little is known about indigenous Rathis culture because of their distrust of outside species after being hunted for sport for so long. The world is now considered off limits by larger government bodies. The Rathis that were taken off world for better or worse have mostly been assimilated into other societies, but black market trading for Rathis slaves occurs often because of their minority status and lack of voice in politics for protections.

I am so happy I finally finished drawing this ref, I can post my animal ocs now! (big accomplishment in Project: ANIMAL!!!)

For now, Animal is a closed species. But, When Project: ANIMAL is accomplished, (when the webcomic is posted) I plan to make Animal an open species!
