(EN) A fact from history 📜 At the end of the 20th century there were two supersonic commercial airplanes that entered into competition: the famous Concorde, launched in 1976 by France and the UK; and the Tupolev Tu-144, launched by the Soviet Union. Both ships had quite a few operational and safety problems, with catastrophic accidents for each. The Tupolev was retired in 1983 and the Concorde in 2003.

I'm not explaining why re-imagining characters as POC is not the same as white-washing, here of all places should fucking understand.
#personal#delete later#no patrick. “black washing” is not as harmful as white washing.#come on guys get it together#seeing people in my reblogs talk about “reverse racism” and double standards is genuinely hypocrisy#say it with me: white washing is intrinsically tied to a historical and systematic erasure of poc figures literature and history.#it is an inherently destructive act that deplatforms underrepresented faces and voices#in favor of a light-skinned aesthetic hegemony#redesigning characters as poc is an act of dismantling symbols of whiteness in fiction in favor of diversification and reclamation#(note that i am talking about individual acts by individual artists as was the topic of this discourse. not on an industry-scale)#redesigning characters as poc is not tied to hundreds of years of systemic racism and abuse and power dynamics. that is a fact.#you are not replacing an underrepresented person with an oft-represented person. it is the opposite#if you feel threatened or upset or uncomfortable about this then sorry but you are not aware of how much more worse it is for poc#if representation is unequal then these acts cannot be equivalent. you can't point to an imbalanced scale and say they weigh the same#if you recognize that bipoc people are minorities then you should recognize that these two things are not the same#while i agree that “black washing” can lead to color-blind casting and writing the behavior here is on an individual level#a black artist drawing their favorite anime character as black because they feel a shared solidarity is not a threat to you#i mean. most anime characters are east asian and i as an east asian person certainly don't feel threatened or erased. neither should you.#there's much to be said about the politics of blackwashing (i don't even know if that's the right word for it)#but point standing. whitewashing is an inherently more destructive act. both through its history of maintaining power dynamics#and the simple fact that it's taking away from groups of people who have less to begin with#if you feel upset or uncomfortable about a fictional white character being redesigned as poc by an artist on twitter#i sincerely hope you're able to explore these feelings and find avenues to empathizing with poc who have had their figures#(both real and fictional) erased; buried; and replaced by white figures for hundreds of years#i sincerely hope you can understand the difference in motivations and connotations behind whitewashing and blackwashing#classic bixels “i'm not talking about this chat. i'm not” (puts my media studies major to use in the tags and talks the fuck outta it)

This was part of my undergrad illustration thesis, which was illustrations to accompany the text of Shakespeare's The Tempest, repurposing aesthetics and imagery from the rural New Hampshire village where I grew up.
Reposting this piece from May 2020, because it is now available as a print, and Tumblr is being weird about letting me edit the original post to add alt text and a link.
#my art#pen and ink#shakespeare#the tempest#ferdinand#miranda#ariel#self repost#all of the text was typed up on my typewriter and composited onto the drawing once i scanned it#fun fact! the stipple shading on the log is morse code and i have absolutely no memory of what it says#that was an idea i wanted to try in all of the pieces for this and then abandoned when lockdown started and i simplified my thesis bc of it#and yes hello costuming history followers! ur right that isnt late 16th/early 17th century clothing on ferdinand#it is a turn-of-the-century high school football uniform from an old kimball union academy team photo#styled to look like the very stylized silhouettes u see in 20s/30s silent film adaptations of shakespeare plays

A professional in their field: we have found a very new piece of information that challenges what we knew previously about this particular subject. Evidence may suggest this new thing is possible, but it is still being investigated as it may be an incredibly multifaceted discovery and cannot be implemented into mainstream knowledge at this time until more is known
Some content creator who found out about this 5 seconds ago: DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS ABSOLUTE FACT???? This massively researched thing we have known about for a hundred years???? This thing YOU should know about and implement into irrevocable truth immediately??? This incredibly complex thing I stopped reading about after two sentences and thought sounded sooooo cool for a 60 second video???? PLEASE go around telling people about this in an even more watered down, one dimensional way than I am doing!!! I IMPLORE you to accept this information without any analysis whatsoever!!!!!!
#*cough* every single video on the Clock app *cough*#and insta as well#I’m not talking about people earnestly trying to explain something in the time they have#I’m talking about the [LOUD INTRO] and then proceeds to passionately explain 60 seconds of misinformation#so many history and science content creators spread stuff this way#and since everyone gets their education from social media#people take it in point blank and regurgitate it in even more videos furthering the ‘facts’ into obscurity#oh I could rant for days about so many other ways people spread misinformation but this is the most obnoxious#history#science

not enough TimJay content takes advantage of the fact that the Red Robin mantle and suit were Jason's first, and Tim effectively stole Jason's shit that Jason wanted to throw away. Tim took Jason's name, his suit, to go on a one-man crusade when he's at odds with the Batfamily. You're telling me Jason wouldn't be weirdly offended but also weirdly turned on by that?
robin (1993) #177
robin (1993) #178
And yes, Tim only knows about the Red Robin suit's existence because Ulysses Armstrong stole it for a hot second, but the fact he stole the suit from Ulysses and fucking kept it? Even before he had any reason to? Like before becoming Red Robin, Tim just kept a suit he knew belonged to Jason despite openly disliking Jason for. Reasons. And later on, it's explicitly confirmed Tim's wearing it because it's Jason's legacy? That's the most toxic gay shit I've ever seen.
adventure comics (2009) #3
Tim's punishing himself with Jason's image. Jason, who has been constantly trying to get Tim to see things his way and work with him would lose his mind over that. There's such a potential for a toxic possessiveness to it all, Tim branding himself with Jason's suit and name. The assumptions Jason would make about Tim because of it. The way Jason could hold that over Tim's head, that they really are one and the same, and deep down, Tim must know it to some degree, if he became Red Robin when he felt replaced as Robin. I truly do not think Jason would ever shut up about it. As a fan of 'possessive/weirdly obsessed with Tim' Jason, I think this would take Jason's weird feelings about Tim to the next level. And if Tim will punish himself just by wearing Jason's legacy, imagine how much more he'd punish himself for falling for Jason too. Weird freaky little masochist who tortures himself through Jason seems exactly Jason's type, tbh. I'm feral about it.
#jaytim#tim drake x jason todd#jason todd x tim drake#timjay#batcest#necrotic festerings#even without the weird batcest dynamics of it i'll always be a pre-flashpoint red robin suit truther#yeah the new-52 suit *looked* cool and all but it lacked the history and significance of pre-flashpoint#the cowl. the legacy. the way it doesn't quite fit. all that is symbolism babey#also the fact jason got the suit from an alt universe dick grayson can add some weird jaydick to the mix of it#just for fun#anyway ppl dunk on red robin a lot as a mantle and suit without acknowledging it's history which is odd to me#yeah yeah some ppl don't read comics but the comics bring it up constantly you'd think it'd have seeped into fandom-only spaces by now#i've used robin 177 twice now for timjay metas which shows you what comics i'm partial to.#it's a good comic for timjay thoughts man.#one day i'll begrudgingly post my thoughts on new-52 (and rebirth) timjay too bc. there's material there for sure#i just am annoyed by it.

Back on my high effort joke bullshit
#bedrock’s#ultrakill#sisyphus prime#minos prime#psych there’s some deeper meaning re: ancient greek male nudity + trans minos#maybe one day I’ll do a proper dive#also fun fact the pattern on his himation is a version of the cretan stitch!#which is a little dubious because (as far as I know) it came from minoan embroidery#which is distinct from ancient greek?#and minos was the king of crete in GREEK MYTHOLOGY#which is. younger than minoan civilization.#he’s possibly younger than the ancient civilization that was named after him (fun!)#anyways I’ll let you get back to your scrolling that has been Walker’s Wiki-Walking Hour#nvm I misremembered the cretan stitch was not from the minoan#still! the intersection of history and myth is just. augh#funfl fact did u know the archeologist who discovered the Palace of Minos was also named Minos

rip to bruce but if i fumbled her i would literally kill myself
#wrote this caption before trying to figure out if the artist intended for this to be a qipao or not#settled on the fact that he did (the mandarin collar sealed it) and spent 2 hour reading a brief history of them#and terminology to try and make an accurate ID but my 'ohmygof she's so fucking hot' got QUICKLY replaced with anger#like in 1930 Shanghai there were so many designs that did feature more form fitting fabric & high side slits#theres so many general gorgeous designs with the elaborate pankous and embroidery and beading that you could of taken inspiration from#and you make it more or less a unitard. you go hm close enough just to sexualize her further#like yeah she's gorgeous my caption stands but the disrespect and disregard is so... you know.#anyways. messy little ramble over. if im bruce wayne im killing myself and also thepankou(.)com has really beginner friendly posts talking#about the history of them & different (general) region styles & the use of qipaos in different media and exhibits. also a GORGEOUS wardrobe#crypt's panels#talia al ghul

Something that really shocked me these past few days is the clarification that it isn't a matter of ignorance for these representatives and world leaders — it's blatant selfish interest that motivates them to commit atrocities on a large scale.
I think a small part of me assumed that once people find out about who we are and what we represent, naturally love will prevail instantly and the Palestinian people will finally receive our unending liberation — but that's not what happened. We have Biden confirming the beheaded babies stories despite not seeing a shred of evidence and at the same time downplaying the reported number of Palestinian deaths and it's not that he doesn't know. He's President of the United States for God's sake. He probably has intel on what Netanyahu ate for breakfast, of course he can see the public videos of Palestinian children with their heads blown off. Its not that he doesn't know — its that he doesn't care.
It's fully just the complete lack of compassion and empathy — placing your own selfish desires above everyone else's and for what? Truly, for what? For a few billion extra dollars? To assure that a select few will survive even if it means alienating the rest of your countrymen? Who is he serving and benefiting other than himself in this situation? What use is that money if you're going to die soon anyways?
I can't comprehend the level of selfishness these people have, to sacrifice lives that he knows can never speak up against him. But that's "the cost of war," isn't it Biden?
#palestine#gaza#i am so fucking angry everyone is saying oh he will go down in history for abetting genocide#and aside from the fact that he PROBABLY WONT its the idea that i dont WANT him to go down in history i WANT him to stop enabling it#it doesnt comfort me that Palestinians will only have their voices hear 20 years from now in thinkpieces about how everyone was so fucking#fascist#i wamt them to stop it NOW#i will never forgive anyone in office for the standing by

My thoughts on the Just Stop Oil publicity stunt at Stonehenge, as someone who worked there, an archaeologist and a pagan: I'm massively annoyed.
Not at JSO actually. At the hypocrisy I'm seeing everywhere.
I'm angry at the politicians who haven't said a word about the A303 tunnel that is going to do irreparable damage to the site and the archaeology. (don't get me wrong, I know a lot of the archaeologists who will be on the project, I have every faith in them, but it is a commercial venture, limited by time, budget and frankly just the techniques available to us now). It's going to be really bad for the environment.
I'm also annoyed at the online pagan community. I've seen so many neo pagans/wiccans with the most surface level "they've made an enemy of their closest allies" take. Well, we can see that you don't actually care about the environment if that's all it takes to turn you away from this. Closing a road would have created environmental damage from all the cars hanging around for hours! Also, where have they been in the campaign against the A303?
Or the fact that Salisbury Plain is being eaten up by new build housing estates that don't support the needs of the residents and stresses local services. Because Stonehenge is just the most famous archaeological monument on the Plain but there are tens, if not hundreds of sites that are being lost. I have literally worked on one- a Bronze Age barrow cemetery with several ring ditches, a potential Neolithic god-pole like structure, Iron Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlement evidence. All destroyed by a new build estate that cannot be supported by local infrastructure, literally in terms of the roads.
They're also the sort of people who complain about the cost of Stonehenge. There is a very good reason that it's so expensive- it basically funds a significant chunk of Historic England (which is far more than just the monuments and sites you can visit). Many of HE's sites are free and they still need to be maintained, which is incredibly expensive. And they're the sort of people to culturally appropriate from other cultures, rather than looking to the archaeology they're fake outraged by.
The paint was made out of cornflour, so not actually a huge conservation issue (I mean, it would definitely better to have not happened but honestly probably the least worst option). The damage done by smog and other air pollution is significantly worse.
People should be angry that this is what people are being forced to do to have their voices heard.
#they speak#archaeology#just stop oil#stonehenge#climate change#history#heritage sites#pagan#paganism#i even saw a video from a woman who called it a bronze time site :/#if you can't even get the most basic facts right dont talk on the topic istg#climate issues

Building up on both of does anon posts, Machete and Vasco being historical figures that make waves every so often on tumblr feels very canon and not too far from actual tumblr's favourite historical figures.
And also, I feel that Machete shouldn't go that unnoticed by scholars. Being this powerful member of the clergy that escaped many assassination attempts before being killed and had a personal relationship with the pope. Like this man was a deathly and important part of the inquisition, but also left behind rumours of a same-sex relationship with a married politician.
I can definitely see him becoming a point of interest for some historians, especially does who studied the inquisition or the clergy. That's probably how Vasco's paintings of him got discovered and documented and how their relationship stopping being considered a rumour started by his now-death enemies, but an actual theory with some weight behind it.
Idk why but I'm becoming very invested in the ways history would treat and remember them, way too many scandals and drama for them to be forgotten in time.
You do make a very convincing point.
People are getting so invested in their hypothetical in-universe reputation and are clearly putting some serious thought into it and it's getting me hyped up as well ;_;
#answered#anonymous#Vaschete scenarios#the fact that the modern au takes place on the same timeline and works as sort of a reincarnation situation kind of complicates things#I'd either have to figure out how to keep the present day iterations from ever learning too much about their 'previous selves'#which can be a little tricky since history is something they're interested in#or tone down the resemblance and similarities enough that they could pass as a weird but plausible coincidence#I'm probably thinking about this too hard it doesn't matter that much
