In the vein of Dean being possessive and overprotective… I think he totally hovers over Sam constantly. Sam gets a text? Dean’s leaning over his shoulder and reading every word. Sam gets mail? Dean opens it first and then gives it to Sam. Sam gets a call? Dean tells him to put it on speaker.

But I’d like to think that he has fostered Sam in this environment for so long, and from such a young age, that Sam’s a grown ass man and sees nothing wrong with his brother giving him literally no privacy. He willingly shows Dean his text messages, scoots closer or leans his head away to give Dean better viewing access whether they are both sitting or Dean is standing over him, will hand Dean letters addressed to him first and then read them himself, no longer even thinks it’s an option to have a phone call that isn’t on speaker.

And when people try to gently mention it, and how it’s weird, Sam misses the point completely. “Oh, Dean’s always been really good about looking out for me. He’s just got to make sure no one’s trying to get one over on me, y’know? I’m honestly so lucky to have him as my brother. :))))” and then he turns to Dean, from where he’s sat on his lap while they’re eating at a diner, and asks, “May I go to the bathroom now?” And waits for the affirmative before he even moves, but even so waits for Dean to also get up to follow him.

I love the idea of Sam being a willful participant, knowingly or not, in Dean’s overbearing obsession with him, because for Sam he has never felt more loved or cared for.
