She shook the furry alien's hand firmly, nodding with a straight face. "Commander Olivia Bernard, Alliance Navy. Thanks for keeping the lights on. I'll be taking over from here. Maybe you can teach Lawson there," she cocked her head towards a fair-skinned woman at her left flank, "a thing or two about being an XO."

A few Cerberus operatives had shocked looks on their faces. Many likely knew of Bernard's brusque nature, but none could have predicted to hear such things about Miranda. If anyone could talk about Miranda like that right in front of her and survive, it would have to be the commander.

Miranda's lip curled as she stepped forward. "A little appreciation would be nice."

"You spent a year and a half rebuilding me, and all you've done was second-guess me," Bernard fired back, turning towards her. "If I'm not back to factory settings, you've only got yourself to blame."

Joker brought a fist to his mouth, looking away with wide eyes and hissing as if he touched a hot stove. "That's the commander, all right..." he mumbled to himself.

Bellum for his part, gave a grunt of acknowledgement. "I am." He agreed.

he looked the human over, looked at the way she stood, she held herself and most importantly, how she looked at him.

While he was no savant in reading people, or being a people person, he knew enough to know one thing.

He had a certain something that gave him that green light about people. And this woman? Looked like she could take charge. Could fight him, and would fight him and give him a hard time. She didn't take shit, that was absolutely clear.

The seconds in the way the two would stare at each other, as he looked her right in the eyes, could be felt like a tension coil in a bridge cable. Would it hold, or would it snap?

The atmosphere was palpable, the bridging divide of something there.

Then Bellum finally broke it with a hand to her.

"Finally, someone with some fuckin' balls." He grunted.

Miranda from The Tempest and A Companion to Owls.

I remember some time ago a fan pointed out that this scene was incredibly reminiscent of “Miranda” by John William Waterhouse and added Aziraphale on the rock contrasted with the first painting (1875). However, another version of the same painting exists; featuring a red-hair Miranda, which was painted afterwards in 1916.

The Miranda here is a character from William Shakespeare's The Tempest. She was detained on an island, together with her father, Prospero, for almost twelve years. This happened as a result of having been exiled from Milan by Prospero's power-seeking brother, Antonio.

The scene plays very blatantly with the word “exile” and Aziraphale fearing being cast into Hell (exiled from Heaven) and Crowley’s clear banishment from his position as an angel.

The picture has been painted in cold (red hair) and warm tones (blond), playing very much into the tones we get to see in A Companion to Owls. Aziraphale’s side on the rock, with the more conventional, peaceful look and Crowley’s with the rocks on the background.

A ship slices through the waves, causing a feeling of imminent loss; notice how that is exactly Aziraphale’s placement on the frame.

Unlike the paintings though, in Good Omens we get a view of both sides, of before and after the storm. The color palettes combine as both Aziraphale and Crowley are fitted into the frame.

Concluding with the wonderful shot directly mirroring their color palettes (sunnier on Aziraphale’s side; shadows on Crowley’s) again and reversing the order of the Miranda paintings (not chronologically, as we see red-hair Miranda appear later on, but in terms of placement and coloring).

"More or less," said the commander. "If you survive, find me at the docks." She motioned for her squadmates to follow her out the door.

A batarian approached the Cabal from behind, shoving him forward. "Start moving. You don't want to keep her waiting."

The asari's eyes widened as she saw the biotic energy surround the ex-Cabal, her glare intensifying. "You," she cut in, pointing at the turian, "come with me. I need to know exactly why a Cabal decided to crash my club."

The ex-Cabal didn't have a choice. While the first group of bouncers dragged the batarian into a private room in a shady area of the club, the rest of the asari's bodyguards pointed their weapons at him, ready to fire if he didn't immediately follow their boss's orders.

The asari then turned to Bernard, who had finished treating the civilian who got shot. Her human and turian squadmates took up her flanks. "It seems the rumors were true, Bernard. Trouble really does follow you everywhere."

"I'm just glad nothing blew up this time," the commander responded, deactivating her drone.

"The night's still young. I wouldn't count it out just yet," said her turian squadmate.

This was part of my undergrad illustration thesis, which was illustrations to accompany the text of Shakespeare's The Tempest, repurposing aesthetics and imagery from the rural New Hampshire village where I grew up.
