out of curiosity -- would stan still act like a zombie, or would he just think he was one, while still acting like a human? this distinction is important.

why is this important? as someone who's had cotard delusions before, i thought i was a living, walking corpse, that had basically gotten possessed. i was pretty much rotting, sure, but the rotting was a non-issue due to the aforementioned possession -- it's difficult to describe, since psychosis isn't exactly the most logical, consistent thing in the world, but. that's really the best i can describe it. i was rotting, but it wasn't an issue, except to me, who was really emotionally hung up by the whole "oh god my body is dead"

this meant that i still did things like eat. even bathed, on occasion, despite the psychotic depression -- at some point, i felt too filthy. i thought i was supposed to be rotting, and that, if i ever stopped possessing my body, i'd just... go back to my natural state of rot, but i wasn't ACTUALLY rotting.

this... might not be the case for stan.

stan doesn't have to be going full zombie or full human in this scenario, mind you. but what's his zombie percentage? is he still rambling incoherently like a zombie? is he still trying to eat people? or does he act mostly human, perturbed by a constant craving for flesh that he shouldn't have, by a constant, deep feeling of rot, like his organs and flesh were going to fall off... even though ford said he'd fix him, so he should be fine.

if stan's not in complete zombiemode, but is still dealing with the psychosis, does he just... stop? that's one of the especially terrifying things about cotard's, and i didn't even have that extreme of a case. the way you just. stop. you stop talking to people, you stop taking care of yourself, you stop caring, you are filled with a constant dread that tells you nothing truly matters and you need to get out -- hell, i've even went catatonic in the past. sure, regular depression can look like that, too, but it comes with a general lack of motivation, not being convinced you're actually dead. does he start hurting himself, just because he doesn't care about getting hurt anymore? he's dead, why does it matter if he falls down the stairs or not?

god. as someone who's dealt with cotard's, i can only imagine how much more horrific it'd have been if i actually knew, as an objective fact, that i WAS a zombie, that i WAS a walking corpse, that i WAS legitimately, genuinely rotting.

the fact that stan would've thought ford didn't inflict this upon him makes it even worse. because stan should be cured, but he isn't, why isn't he, why is this still HAPPENING, should he tell ford? no, ford would think he's crazy, but oh god why aren't these thoughts going away, it's going to happen again,

not to project but i think he should have a psychotic episode where he's catatonic and freaking the fuck out and crying about it.

Au where Dipper didn't find the page on karaoke in time and Stan told Mabel to grab his brother and grappling hook through the trees until they couldn't see the shack anymore, and once they were gone Stan kept fighting until he couldn't anymore, dozens of bites on his arms when he fell back into the house, sick and cold and hungry. Most of the zombies left when there weren't any humans left, and when the sun rose they crumbled to ash. Stan stayed inside, gnawing on his own already bloodied arm and trying not to think about how much he wanted the flesh under his teeth to be alive. He couldn't have the kids back, couldn't have anyone anywhere near the house while he was like this. He locked the doors and only peeked out at night. He found the journal Dipper had dropped when Mabel grabbed him, and he had almost forgotten his brother, his memory decaying along with his body, he used the journals to get the portal up and running as soon as he could - before he forgot his brother's name was not his own, before he forgot the last thing he had ever said to him: "Stanley, do something" and he intended to, in a race against his own body's decomposition.

By the time the portal started working, his eyes had clouded over and withered and rotted into his skull, the tendons holding his jaw in place hung low and awkward, flies had started burrowing into the bites on his arms, he couldn't remember the smell of the ocean or how his mother looked or why there were children upstairs yelling a name he didn't recognize but he remembered Stanford and he remembered that he needed to get Stanford back and all the rumblings that sent his corpse falling into hard concrete floors and breaking more bones meant that Stanford would be back soon, and he didn't know what he would do when Stanford was back, maybe eat him, he was so hungry, but no he couldn't because Stanford wouldn't be back if he was eaten would he. Maybe Stanford would feed him. Maybe Stanford would kill him in a way that stuck, and didn't leave him feeling every corroding cell in this damn body. Maybe Stanford would eat him. That would be nice.
