Colton Dach on the Showbound Podcast
Tumblr media
spending the summer doing shoulder rehab from his injury and working on getting “stronger” and “faster”. and went back to kelowna after the mem cup to pack up his stuff because he didn’t have a chance after being traded to seattle at the wjc
his grade 9 bantam team only lost two games all year (with zellweger, guenther, savoie?) he and some of his teammates skipped school on 2018 whl draft day because they knew they were getting picked high
on playing with kirby in saskatoon: “it would’ve been nice if he didn’t make the show at 18 so i could’ve played with him there [longer]”
took him 30 games to score his first whl goal. “wasn’t very positive” with himself
names Tristen Robins ("offensive weapon”) and Kyle Crnkovic as memorable players on the blades
When asked if he thinks the dub is the toughest league in the chl: “i played against the other two [at the mem cup] and going into it we’re like okay we’re just going to bully these kids, we’re just going to run them out of the rink and i’ll give it to the quebec team. Was probably the hardest, toughest guys to play against.”
One of his teammates tried to look up the fights of the ohl players before the mem cup and (because of the limits of fighting in the league) couldn’t find anything to study and gave up.
“Growing up I was always a feisty kid and I always thought when I get to the dub I'll be able to handle myself” first dub fight at 16 against a 20 year old. lost horribly.
Kirby spoiled that colton was getting drafted by chicago because he told one of their friends to grab the hawks hat after getting a text from someone in chicago’s management before the pick was announced.
Thought he was going to st. louis because he had the most conversations with them before the draft
Montreal asked him which animal he’d be and he answered grizzly bear “bigger guy, not so fast but physical” and at the end of the conversation one of the montreal guys said “i don’t think you’re a bear” Guenther and Zellweger were present at the zoom call. “Zellweger said he’d be a wolf or a predator or something like that”
Colton found out he was traded to kelowna while he was in chicago with kirby driving to the rink and duncan keith called kirby and told them colton was traded to kel before either of them knew
About kelowna: “they were great guys. It was awesome. Still best friends with a lot of them.”
Kirby’s trying to sell colton his car so he can buy a new one. Colton doesn’t want to show up to camp without having played a single pro game with a g wagon.
He was roommates with reid schaefer at the world juniors. Their room faced the hotel exit so they anxiously watched guys leave as they didn’t make the cut. Schaefer got a call that his car was being towed in seattle and Colton’s dad kept calling to ask if he had made the team yet. The phone calls made them think they were getting cut.
Didn’t have high expectations because he was told during a meeting “just to let you know you're not here because of your play this season so far, you're here because what you did in the summer at our camp”
When asked what happens when they cut one roommate and keep the other - during the 2022 summer wjc zack ostapchuk and his roommate were told to pack their stuff and it wasn’t until the roommate had already left and ostapchuk was about to leave that they told him he wasn’t actually cut
After losing to czechia nobody on the team talked until the next afternoon. Captain shane wright didn't let the team play sewer ball before the next game so they would focus better
About bedard: good ping pong player. Colton mentions coach chippy’s videos about bedard’s wrist curls
Almost got kicked out of the media box during bedard’s ot winner vs slovakia because he was being too loud and banging on the desk while the staff was trying to work
On the playoffs: played kelowna first, says his ex teammates knew how to trigger him on the ice and chirped him with inside stuff when he skated by the bench
Calls guenther the “powerhouse” during playoffs
After guenther met crosby he texted colton on instagram and colton was like “i hate you so much right now”
After being drafted to chicago colton got a text from kane to congratulate him and made some comment about getting the “better dach”
Calls seattle thunderbirds fans “unreal”
“one funny story actually after we won, you know, boys did their laps with the trophy and take the team photos, two of the guys went out to the parking lot to get the coolers of beer and drinks so you know the guys can have some fun in the dressing room and they get locked out and because we're in the states it's 21 you know like you can't - they're not supposed to drink - right yeah, everyone's under 20. the commissioner is walking by and he's the one who told everyone that we can't drink or something like that in the room. the commissioner walks by outside these guys are stuck outside sitting on the cooler drinking beer. in full gear as well. just sitting there and he comes up shakes her hands says congrats and walks away. it was pretty funny”
“Partied friday night, saturday, sunday, skated monday/tuesday” after winning the whl champs
After they got back on the bus after losing the mem cup, the team was dejected and crnkovic stood up and yelled “we’re still champs” to rile the boys up again
considers himself “grumpy in the mornings”
crnkovic is the funniest guy on the thunderbirds but the worst chirper. colton considers himself the biggest chirper.
Saunders is best dressed, crnkovic is the worst and can’t tie a tie.
says Ciona is most likely to be a coach when they’re done playing “lot of patience” “good leader”
"Stranded on an island for a month with three seattle thunderbirds?" “Bryce pickford for sure. He would know how to handle a situation out there. Maybe Milic. You know if he brings his guitar he can sing some songs out there so that’d be nice. Maybe gunner (Guenther). Just get some laughs out there. Create some chaos. He was my roommate so it was pretty funny.”
“Any funny coach stories?” “I wouldn’t say it’s really funny it’s kind of awkward. So in kelowna last year we had to put one of our dogs down and my mom called me and told me that the night before and I go to practice the next day and I told one guy on the team and everyone's skating around it's kind of, everyone's not talking, just a quiet day and the coach comes in he's like what? what the hell? like did someone's dog die last night? and oh you know I just I sat there I'm like oh no wiping my eyes. one of the guys comes up to me gives me a hug and he's like, "yeah Colton's dog.”'
about bedard and media: “I always went behind him on the bus [at wj] so I can get a little extra air time on TV” “no he’s definitely, he does really good with that stuff. He’s very well media trained”
On seeing kirby: they call after every game, don’t always talk about hockey. Call each other on off days to play video games. Colton went to montreal for kirby’s bday for a week while his shoulder was separated. “That was pretty special. I haven’t really got to watch him play since he’s been in Saskatoon.”

Bedard bedazzles, breaks 5 records as Canada eliminates Slovakia with overtime win
Connor Bedard made one opponent miss.
And another. And another.
The breathtaking 17-year-old then calmly slid the puck home to set off wild celebrations and send his country to the semifinals at the world junior hockey championship.
Bedard scored at 5:17 of overtime on a brilliant, jaw-dropping individual effort Monday as the tournament hosts defeated Slovakia 4-3.
The extraordinary talent deked his way past three Slovaks before backhanding his eighth goal of the event to blow the roof off a red-clad Scotiabank Centre.
"I always want the puck," Bedard said. "It's still hockey, I'm still out there doing what I love. The moment's big. But I've done that same move, I've done the same shot I took a million times in my basement … in practice, by myself on the ice.
"I'm out there playing hockey."
At an absolutely astounding level.
"I'm kind of calling for it," Canadian defenceman Brandt Clarke said of the highlight-reel OT sequence. "But I see him burn the first guy, see him burn the second guy, see him burn the third guy and then go to the backhand on the goalie.
"That was one of the craziest moments I've ever been a part of."

— TSN (@TSN_Sports) January 3, 2023
Bedard also scored early in the first — setting four records in the process — before adding an assist on Canada's second goal to establish another national mark.
"It's hard to describe what he means for our team," said goaltender Thomas Milic, who made 24 saves, including a couple huge stops to keep his team alive. "It's almost like he's pressing random buttons on the Xbox controller coming up with some of these dangles. You never know what he's going to do next. He keeps surprising."
"I think (Bedard's) from another world," said Slovak captain Simon Nemec.
Dylan Guenther and Zack Ostapchuk provided the rest of the offence for the Canadians, who will face the United States on Wednesday after the Americans thumped Germany 11-1.
Libor Nemec, with two, and Robert Baco replied for Slovakia, which got 52 stops from Adam Gajan.
"Played a great game," Simon Nemec said. "Best game in the tournament."
Czechia trounced Switzerland 9-1 to set up the other semifinal against Sweden, which beat Finland 3-2.
With Simon Nemec off in the penalty box for a cross-check on Bedard late in the third, Shane Wright hit the crossbar in overtime on a shot that went off Gajan's pad.
Milic then made a terrific glove stop on Servac Petrovsky to keep his team alive before Bedard added his name to Canada's world junior lore.
"I thought it went in," Bedard said of the Petrovsky chance. "I was about to start crying on the bench. That was ridiculous. I was so scared."
The presumptive top pick at the 2023 NHL draft, Bedard opened the scoring just over six minutes into the first on a breakaway after Slovak defenceman Pavol Funtek turned the puck over.
That pushed the centre for the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats past Eric Lindros for top stop on Canada's all-time list with 34 points at the men's under-20 event.
The North Vancouver, B.C., product has also passed Jordan Eberle for the most combined goals at the world juniors by a Canadian with 16.
Canada went up 2-0 on a power play with five minutes gone in the second when Bedard found Othmann, who in turn fed a falling Guenther.
Bedard set a new record for the most points by a Canadian in a single tournament with 21, owns the national mark with 13 assists at a single event, and passed Jaromir Jagr for the most points by a player aged 18 or younger.
"I'm not focused on personal success here," said Bedard, who topped the podium with Canada in the summer. "I want another gold medal … and that's all I want."
The Slovaks came off the mat and responded on a power play of their own when Nemec tipped in a point shot.
Canada restored its two-goal lead just over three minutes later when Ostapchuk fired past Gajan's blocker on a 3-on-1 break.
But Slovakia got back to within one when Peter Repcik showed great patience to find Baco for his second.
Canada hit two posts early in the third period before Milic made an incredible stop on a mad scramble off Adam Sykora, shooting out a pad before Canadian defenceman Tyson Hinds stopped the followup attempt with his glove.
"Incredible atmosphere," Milic said. "Bit of a roller-coaster."
But Nemec scored his second of the game moments later with under nine minutes to go on Milic's doorstep after an icing to make it 3-3.
Bedard had a terrific chance to put Canada ahead late in the third, but Funtek blocked his effort.
In the end, however, the phenom wouldn't be denied.
"That's what he does," Wright said. "Stepped up when he needed to. Big-time player, big-time game."
And the Americans are up next.
"What else is better? What else do you want?" Bedard said of the mouth-watering matchup. "Something that everyone in the country, everyone on the continent is going to be pretty excited about.
"There's no better situation."
There's also no one better than Bedard.
EBERLE TIPS HIS CAP
The Seattle Kraken forward congratulated Bedard on passing him on Canada's goal list in a pre-recorded message.
"You're an unbelievable player to watch," Eberle, a hero at the 2009 tournament, said in a video posted to Hockey Canada's official Twitter account. "I've been following your career since you got drafted to my hometown and playing with the Pats.
"Enjoy the experience."

The Giants selected Camazzola in Round 4 of the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. In 40 games with the BCMML’s Vancouver Northeast Chiefs this season, the 6’1″, 187-pound d-man registered six assists and a team-high 78 penalty minutes. He also appeared in all five of the Chiefs playoff games.
As a Bantam, he scored twice and added eight assists for 10 points along with 54 penalty minutes in 30 games with the CSSBHL’s Burnaby Winter Club. His Elite Prospect’s bio can be found here.
“Physically, Nicco was one of the toughest defencemen to play against in the BCMML,” said Giants GM Barclay Parneta. “We are happy with his development and he’ll be a big contributor on our blueline in the years to come.”
Nicco Camazzola is the fourth Giants 2018 draftee to sign. He joins forward Zack Ostapchuk (Round 1), goaltender Drew Sim (Round 3) and Justin Lies (Round 3). He’ll attend his second training camp with the Giants beginning Friday, August 23rd.

CHL leagues at mercy of pandemic, politics while formulating return-to-play plans

Knowing the Western Hockey League plans to begin play again on Jan. 8 has brought a sigh of relief from Zack Ostapchuk and some of the other players he’s training with in St. Albert, Alta.
“I think everybody is pretty excited,” said Ostapchuk, a 17-year-old forward with the Vancouver Giants. “We were all a little worried that we weren’t ever going to start. Now that we’ve got a date, the…

Bedard's seven points against Germany helps Canada get back on track at world juniors
Canada needed a response after a miserable 48 hours.
Connor Bedard — as he's done so often in his young career — delivered with lethal precision.
The 17-year-old phenom had a hat trick and four assists Wednesday as the host county got back on track at the world junior hockey championship with an emphatic 11-2 victory over Germany.
"Unbelievable game," Canadian captain Shane Wright said. "Pretty crazy what he's doing out there. Special night."
It certainly was.
Bedard's seven-point performance tied a single-game Canadian record on an evening the favourites at the men's under-20 showcase needed a response following Monday’s embarrassing 5-2 loss to Czechia.
"It's cool," the presumptive No. 1 pick at the 2023 NHL draft said of joining Dave Andreychuk (1983), Brenden Morrow (1999), Mike Cammalleri (2002) and Gabriel Bourque (2010) on Canada's seven-point list. "But that's not a huge deal for me. It's good to get the win.
"I got a couple of pretty lucky ones. Just one of those nights."
Bedard now has 12 goals all-time at the world juniors, two back of Jordan Eberle's national record.
"I'll text him saying he's got a guy on his heels," Wright said of Eberle, his teammate with the NHL's Seattle Kraken. "Don't think we'll be focused on that a lot, but it's gonna be special if he hits those along the way."
"He was on fire … shot was unreal," Canadian head coach Dennis Williams added of Bedard. "His creativity and his poise … a great night.
"He led the way."
Dylan Guenther also had a hat trick — all off Bedard passes — while Logan Stankoven added a goal and two assists.
Wright, Brandt Clarke and Joshua Roy, with a goal and an assist each, and Zack Ostapchuk also scored.
Olen Zellweger chipped in with three assists as Williams shook up three of his forward lines — including splitting up Bedard and Wright — after a disconnected and disjointed effort against the Czechs.
"We came much more determined," said the coach. "Played tighter as a group."
Thomas Milic made 14 saves in his first world junior start for Canada. Roman Kechter and Philip Sinn had the goals for Germany, which got 30 stops from Simon Wolf before he was replaced by Rihards Babulis for the third period in a mercy pull. Babulis finished with 11 saves.
"We were pretty hungry," Bedard said. "That was a huge way to come back."
Canada, which improved to 16-0 all-time against the Germans, will now quickly pivot to face Austria — outscored 20-0 through its two tournament games — Thursday back at Scotiabank Centre.
Coming off a 1-0 defeat Tuesday to Sweden, Germany is off Thursday before a Friday meeting with Austria.
A talent-rich team loaded with nine first-round NHL draft picks, plus Bedard and fellow high-end prospect Adam Fantilli, Canada was stunned by the Czechs in an uninspired curtain-raiser that left the powerhouse nation searching for answers.
That included players questioning their own readiness and preparation, while Fantilli and Bedard each attempted and failed "The Michigan" lacrosse-style move early — sequences viewed afterwards as symptomatic of the Canadians' loose approach against an underdog opponent.
There would be no repeat.
"We didn't change our game based on what the score was," Guenther said. "I love that … that was awesome."
The Arizona Coyotes forward opened things on a power play in the first period off a Bedard feed before Ketcher snapped a shot through Milic.
Wright was credited with his second goal of the tournament on another man advantage when a German defender swept the puck into his own net.
Bedard, who had four goals in an 11-2 victory over Austria one year ago to the day before that tournament was shelved by COVID-19, made it 3-1 when he took a stretch pass and ripped a shot past Wolf, and got another early in the second on a goaltending miscue.
"We were a lot more focused," Wright said. "We knew we had to respond after last game's effort."
Wright said Bedard could probably put up a couple points a night in the NHL right now.
"Incredible," said the No. 4 pick at the 2022 draft. "Haven't seen many individual performances like that. Pretty special."
Added Guenther: "He's gonna be an impact player there, I assume, right away."
Bedard roofed his hat-trick goal on another power play through a screen before Rayan Bettahar was assessed a match penalty and ejected for an illegal check to the head on Fantilli.
That's when the floodgates really opened.
Guenther scored his second on a slick Bedard feed to make it 6-1 and Clarke blasted a one-timer off a German defender.
Bedard then set up Guenther for his third on the same man advantage and Stankoven added another late in the period for a 9-1 lead through 40 minutes.
Ostapchuk made it 10-1 early in the third before Bedard assisted on Roy's goal for his seventh point of the evening.
Sinn got a late consolation goal on a German power play to close out a night that saw Canada recalibrate after an uncomfortable two days.
"That's how we play hockey,” Wright said. "All three periods — all 60 minutes — that was Team Canada hockey. We were expecting a bounce-back game and that's exactly we got.
"Really proud of our effort."
