Friday, January 15: Motörhead, “I Am the Sword”
R.I.P. Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister (1945-2015), Michael “Würzel” Burston (1949-2011)
Bastards was more than just a reset after the lackluster March ör Die laid waste to Motörhead’s commercial aspirations: the album was a much-needed recalibration of the band’s general mission, and turned out to be the fiercest, meanest and most focused record the band had put out since at least Another Perfect Day, if not all the way back to Ace of Spades.  And it had definitely been that long since Motörhead sounded so cohesive- with Mikkey Dee fully on board, Lemmy, Würzel and Phil "Zööm" Campbell were fully in lockstep and stayed in full attack mode even though the songs on Bastards were actually quite varied. “I Am the Sword” benefited from the band’s renewed sense of purpose- structurally it wasn’t much different from anything the band recorded in the previous 10 years, but there was a leanness and single-mindedness to the ass-kicking (aided no doubt by Howard Benson’s unfussy production) that gave the tune added vigor.  It was just so great to hear Motörhead in their stride again, with Lemmy’s snarling croak especially venomous and Dee making his own mark with his jackhammer drumming.  And fortunately for everyone, this turned out to be the beginning of a remarkably consistent run, one that pretty much lasted until Lemmy’s passing over 20 years later.

Sacrifice is the 12th studio album by the band Motörhead, released on 27 March 1995, on Steamhammer (a subsidiary of SPV GmbH) their first for the label. It was also the start of the distribution collaboration with CMC International in North America and certain territories. It is the second, and last, album to feature the four-man lineup of Lemmy, Phil “Zööm” Campbell, Würzel, and Mikkey Dee, as Würzel left the band after the recording of this album.

“SACRIFICE”
Why do they not believe I have not lied, even for this, Now no-one can conceive The lie becomes the loving kiss, But I would not, Fall in love, Like this. The woman stiches the shrouds, The children murder all the world, If only you believe, Then only you will die, How can you not, See the stars, In your eyes. Sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice, Sacrifice, pay the price, blood like ice, sacrifice. The pain is on you now, Do not consider flight for gain, In you the poison breeds, Crawling with the mark of Cain, And no-one shall, Set you free, Again. Sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice, Sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice.

‪On this day in 1993, Motorhead release ‘Bastards’. ♠️‬ It is one of two studio albums with the short-lived Lemmy, Würzel, Zööm and Mikkey Dee lineup, as on the previous album Dee was a 'special guest' drummer and hadn't officially joined the band. It was also the first of four Motörhead albums to be produced by former Child'ƨ Play producer Howard Benson, and the first Motörhead studio album not to contain a title track. After unsuccessfully commercialising the success of 1916 with its 1992 follow-up March ör Die, the band returned to their roots: being loud and fast. The lyrical themes range from social criticism ("On Your Feet or on Your Knees"), to war ("Death or Glory" and "I am the Sword") to child abuse ("Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me") and total mayhem ("Burner"). Lemmy also states in his memoir that he offered "Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me" to both Joan Jett and Lita Ford: ..'cause I thought a girl should sing it but no one ever took it up. Friday, July 9: Motörhead, “In Another Time”
R.I.P. Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister (1945-2015), Michael “Würzel“ Burston (1949-2011)
Bastards was a very necessary reset for Motörhead after a few years of drift, and Sacrifice subsequently paid it off in full by presenting the band at its leanest and most ravenous in well over a decade, relentlessly kicking ass from beginning to end.  And although Würzel was apparently eyeing the exit throughout the writing and recording, the ever-stalwart Phil "Zööm" Campbell ably picked up the slack and delivered grooving slammers like “In Another Time”, which sounded cohesive and unified even if one member wasn’t highly engaged. But Lemmy sounded great, and his lyrics were sharp as ever, while Mikkey Dee fully came into his own, as his thunderous but actually quite sophisticated drumming proved to be Motörhead’s secret weapon over the next 20 years.  And Campbell’s rolling riff laid the template for the rest of the band’s discography.  “In Another Time” didn’t steamroll and pulverize the way “Sacrifice” or “Sex and Death” did, but it was plenty heavy and distinctly Motörhead-style rock and roll, and still had the goods to mow down just about everything in its path.
