Friday, April 28: Dio, “Living the Lie”

R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010)

Master of the Moon was initially derided as too mid-paced and more than a little rote, and was largely forgotten in the ensuing years as Ronnie James Dio continued touring behind his back catalogue before reuniting with his former Sabbath mates under the Heaven and Hell for a glorious final run.  But although the record was by no means one of his best, the last album under the Dio moniker ultimately had its share of simple pleasures, with tunes like “Living the Lie” cruising at a pace that suited Ronnie’s diminished but still compelling (and committed) vocals.  Craig Goldy and Simon Wright, as co-writers, both understood exactly what they needed to do, and the riffing and drumming recalled vintage Dio without trying to recreate The Last in Line, so everything from the composition to the performance felt natural for all involved.  With the benefit of hindsight, it was much easier to appreciate and even enjoy “Living the Lie” for what it was, which was a driving heavy metal tune played with finesse by a band of lifers and one resolutely focused icon.

Thursday, July 20: Klimt 1918, "Skygazer"

Italy became something of a dark horse in the metal scene sometime around the early ‘00s.  The bands weren’t always amazing, but they weren’t boilerplate and once Lacuna Coil broke all bets were off.  So there was an opening for Klimt 1918 (named after Austrian painter Gustav Klimt and the year of his death(?)) to carve their own niche on their own terms, putting out moody and esoteric alternative and vaguely goth-ish arty metal on records with titles like Just In Case We'll Never Meet Again. “Skygazer” came from that album, and played like a heavier Anathema or more upbeat Katatonia, though its uplifting anthemic alt rock opening didn’t really sound like either.  It was a nice sound, and Klimt 1918 had their own voice, which made “Skygazer” an intriguing listen that merited further exploration.

I promise it's gonna be alright. Dude but seriously this is the most genuine metalrock they've ever done at Eurovision I think? I'd listen to this outside of Eurovision. Like I listen to more songs from ESC but they always have this 'yeah but it's a good Eurovision song' label even when playing my normal playlist but this would work so well. I'm not sure if I like it as the best for Eurovision this year but it's definitely going on my general playlist.
