‘Your Light’ Explanation and other information
@gigizetz
“Your Light” as a song has gone through a lot of changes throughout the course of EPIC’s development, I’ll start from the very beginning and I’ll remark the parts that are speculation. (Also I had to add some edits so this color is for that)
Back in the early stages of EPIC the Ismarus event was part of EPIC, and it is speculated that back in the day Ismarus had a whole Saga dedicated to it; from songs and information from Jorge’s Patreon we know that this songs would tell the events that went down on Ismarus:
• Ismarus (Probably An Earlier Version)
• Your Light
• Man Of The House (Eurylochus Version)
• Unhand Him
• Mercy Has A Price
It is theoraized that this version of EPIC was the one in which Act I ends with the Circe Saga, making EPIC 10 Sagas long instead of 9.
——————————————————————————
EDIT: So new info just dropped, Jorge showed a list of ‘cut songs’ he has been able to salvage and it turns out there is an even EARLIER version of ‘Your Light’ that is about Odysseus family instead. We do not know anything about this version outside of the fact that it exist, it is at the start of the list with songs from 2019 and about the Iliad (which can mean that this version was more about the Iliad than the Odyssey, from a time EPIC wasn’t even an adaptation of the Odyssey) and that instead of Polites, Ody’s family was involved, anyways just a quick edit to let y’all now this new info.

Also everything between songs 9. and 23. seems to be all of the songs that attempted to covered what happened on Ismarus, not saying all those songs are part of the hypothetical ‘Ismarus Saga’ (I believe the list I made is the one that came the closest to what the ‘Ismarus Saga’ would have been), but that those are all of the attempts at including anything Ismarus related to EPIC.
——————————————————————————
Anyways, this hypothetical version of EPIC was scrapped and rewritten even before what we know as the “First Draft”, although two of those songs managed to survive to be part of the First Draft of EPIC, those songs being ‘Ismarus’ and ‘Your Light’.
(I’m not counting ‘Man Of The House’ because it basically became a different song).

Eventually, Jorge rewrote the First Draft centering in Act I, in that rewrite the first two Sagas got major revamp, and with that ‘Ismarus’ and it’s storyline got cut and ‘Your Light’ transformed into ‘Open Arms’. (Also ‘Man Of The House’ was cut and it’s melody / motif became the main chant of the Suitors)
Now, let’s go with the context of the song: this song is set right after the song ‘Ismarus’, in this song Polites is trying to help and animate Odysseus (who is in the boat not been able to sleep because of the screams of the people he have hurt) after what happened on Troy and sending his tropes to raid Ismarus; they speaks about their past, mentioned the inscident with the Boar (in which Odysseus meet Athena, and from the First Draft song list we know the next song was the equivalent of ‘Warrior Of The Mind’). And in conclusion Polites tells Odysseus that no matter what, he is going to be with him, and that he can always rely on him to help him, guide him to what is right, and to “be his light”.
(If you have information I missed or you wished to add let me know)

I find this dichotomy so funny:
Odysseus, who has been in war for years and is quick to be crafty and trick his enemies: *laments and mourns giving up mercy and being forced to become the monster*
Telemachus, the one with a reputation of being small and weak with a good heart: *kills a man from behind while they’re distracted without any hesitation or remorse*
#like#granted#Telemachus does offer to spare the next ones and that backfires on him#but I’m pretty sure he did kill that first guy#and he said he wanted to fight monsters (literal and figurative) to bring light to the world#so he kept the mercy and kindness while also doubling down on the evils#like ody#I get why you went the way you did but#your son figured out how to keep both lmao#ah well#he’s home so now Telemachus can work with Athena on that kinder world she was talking about#so good for him lol#epic the musical#epic the ithaca saga#ithaca saga#telemachus#Odysseus#the odyssey#Athena

"Let Me be the Stars You see at Night"
Have more art of yet another AU of mine, because apparently I can't stick to just one version. This time we have the Polites Polaris AU, where Polites literally is a star, the North Star to be exact.
He fell from the sky, right into Odysseus' backyard - or rather the forest behind the palace - when Odysseus was still young and has been by his side ever since.
After he got sent back into the sky by Hermes, he's been watching over Odysseus, and guided him back to Ithaca during the Vengeance Saga ("Follow the North Star, no matter how far" - Hermes in Dangerous).
Originally, Polites looked like a ball of light, but when Odysseus first found him, he subconsciously mimicked his humanoid form while still being unconscious from his fall. He usually looks like a version of himself that consists entirely out of golden light, but he can make himself appear like a normal human, even if he will always exude a certain light. After he's back amongst the stars, his form becomes ginormous, to more easily be seen from earth. Instead of blood, Polites bleeds like a galaxy from his wounds.
Also, since Polaris is actually a triple star system, I like to imagine that Eurylochus and Odysseus join Polites up in the sky after their deaths

So I was listening to Let Me Be Your Light and I noticed some fun parallels:
"Do you remember when we would run through the forest, looking for the largest threat?"
"Oh, I remember the thrill and the fun!"
"Until the day we find that giant boar's den(that was terrifying!")
"We were rather young, and I was oh, so scared. I saw him lunge, and I stared."

Wisdom Saga headcanon
"I had a friend", "Then his light went dark", "Maybe, if I made a different call, [...], Maybe he'd be fine]
out of context these lines sound a lot like Athena's 'friend' had died. guess what Telemachus doesn't have? that's right, context. he says it himself, "I don't think he'd mind". 'I don't think he would', not 'will [when he finds out]'. so, i'm pretty sure Telemachus thinks that Athena's friend is dead.
but I raise you one better. bright young man Telemachus might've just realized that the friend in question is his dad, and taken it as a confirmation of his demise.
so he listens to Athena pour her guts out while she thinks he doesn't understand anything, and figures that after she left his dad Odysseus had died and she'd been suffering, blaming herself the whole time. and he reaches out to her and extends a hand in friendship. he forgives her.
"I don't think he'd mind" is not 'he doesn't care about you anymore', it's 'I never knew my dad, but judging by the stories he was a fiercely caring soul and he wouldn't hate his friend for making a mistake'. it's 'he would be glad to know we found solace in each other, even though you two parted on bad terms'
you couldn't pry cinnamon roll Telemachus out of my cold, dead hands
#also the 'your light' reference was just mean#jorge WHYYYY#wisdom saga#epic the wisdom saga#headcanon#athena#telemachus#odysseus#epic#epic the musical

Okay, let's finally talk about EPIC's Apollo
I feel very compelled to say, first of all, that I do not dislike Epic. In fact, I am very fond of Epic and have been following its production and status very eagerly! I attend all the launch streams, I watch all of Herrans' update videos; I am, at the end of the day, a fan and I want it to be known that my words are spoken out of love and passion as much as they are spoken from a place of critique.
So really, what my problem with Epic's Apollo?
In the briefest possible terms; the choice to have Apollo be defined by his musical aspect in God Games is thematically strange. And not in the 'oh well in the Odyssey, Apollo was important to Odysseus and his family so it's weird that that wasn't kept in Epic' strange, strange in the sense that Odysseus' character arc since My Goodbye has been getting more and more obviously Apollonian and so it is positively bizarre that when we get to meet Apollo, the god seems entirely disinterested in him and his affairs. So much so that he is not even defined by any station that would indicate that he has been watching over and protecting Odysseus and his family.
What do I mean by 'Odysseus has been following an Apollonian arc'? I'm so glad you asked!
Remember Them is the last song in which Odysseus explicitly uses his sword until Mutiny where he must use it to defend himself against Eurylochus' blade. He uses it to help enact the plan to conquer Polyphemus and, due to Polites dying in that battle, Polites who wished for Odysseus to put the blade down entirely and embrace a post-war life, Odysseus also retires his sword. This is an action that symbolically separates him from Athena - and the image of Odysseus as a traditional warrior set for him in Horse and Infant - as much as My Goodbye physically separates him from the goddess and her war-ways - from this point onwards, Odysseus will no longer be leaning on Athena's wisdom or methods to solve his problems. Likewise, he will no longer be able to rely on her protection.
Odysseus thusly solves most of his upcoming problems through diplomacy and avoidance. He approaches Aeolus - a strange and ambiguous god (both in gender and in motivation) and appeals to them for help. Circe too, he approaches not with wishes to conquer or for revenge, but for the safe returning of his men and an alternate way forward. In all of these scenarios, there is some Apollonian element which is subtly interweaved alongside the influence of other gods; it is with a bow and arrows that Polyphemus' sheep is slain (and thus it is this Apollonian element which is at the root of Odysseus' spat with Poseidon), it is a vision of Penelope that warns Odysseus that his men are about to open Aeolus' wind-bag, Circe's peace offering to Odysseus is to refer him to a prophet of Apollo who has since died.
In this way, Apollo is walking alongside Odysseus for all of his journey after Athena departs - even in the Underworld, he is guiding him. It is Tiresias' proclamation that is the last straw for Odysseus, it is by the power of a mouthpiece of Apollo that Odysseus decides to embrace his ruthlessness. It is with the bow and arrow that Odysseus subdues the siren who sought to trick him, likewise, Odysseus does not attempt to undermine or escape the fate of paying Scylla's passage price - he knows of the doom about to befall the six men and quite unlike the rest of the journey until this point, he does not fight against it. This all comes to a head on Thrinacia where it is a blade which sacrifices the sun god's cow and brings destruction upon the crew once more.
My point with all of this is that when I heard the teasers for God Games years ago, it made perfect sense to me that Apollo would be Round One - he is not Odysseus' adversary and has no reason to oppose Athena's wish to free him. From other teasers about what will happen in the climax of Epic, Apollo will still be walking alongside Odysseus - it is Apollo's bow that Penelope will give the suitors to string. Likewise, it is Apollo's bow that will prove Odysseus' legitimacy and identity. That bow will be the power by which Odysseus hunts his adversaries and cleans out his palace - it is Apollo who is the avatar of Odysseus' ruthlessness, not Athena.
So tell me, truly, what was the point of having Apollo raise a non-argument in God Games? Why have him appear unconcerned, aloof and slightly oblivious? Why have him appear in his capacity as the Lord of Music at all?? And if the intention was never to make Apollo an active player in Odysseus' life like he was in the Odyssey, why keep Odysseus as a primary archer?
The answer of course is that Apollo is inextricable from the fabric of the Odyssey - his influence and favour exudes from Odysseus just as much as Athena's. In Athena's ten year sulk, it would have been Apollo who kept Telemachus and Penelope safe. It would have been Apollo protecting Odysseus from Poseidon's gaze as he travelled the seas (according to the Odyssey anyway)
Forgive me for not being excited about something that I thought was being purposefully set up. I was extremely ecstatic about all of the little Apollonian details that litter the sagas because I know where this story ends up (loosely) but all God Games did was reveal that maybe those Apollonian details were not intentional at all, but merely the ghost of the Apollo who persistently haunts those he favours, even if he cannot explicitly come to their aide in an adaptation.
#ginger rambles#apollo#odysseus#epic the musical#athena#This of course is not mentioning the whole 'in the Odyssey the suitors have been explicitly praying#for Apollo to kill Telemachus so they can have free reign and Apollo is just going 'what's that? I'm sorry I can't hear haters' thing#I'm actually so disappointed by Apollo in God Games because I truly did believe that it was leading up to Apollo and Athena#BOTH being by Odysseus' side in the end#I really like the fandom view that Apollo used the sirens as an excuse because he has nothing against Odysseus#but in order for me to give that any merit there would have needed to be something in the text itself to support that#And Apollo only has the three-four lines which like - in and of itself is crazy#I really wish Apollo and Hephaestus had full verses like Aphrodite/Ares#Or at least a back and forth like Hera#The milquetoast Apollo who is apparently upset about murder but then only took a light rebut for him back down#I'm sorry have you not seen Apollo when he's mad about murder before? He's not that reasonable I promise you#I'm just not going to talk about him being mad about the sirens specifically if I think about that too long I'll get hives#Looking very forward to when Penelope finally gets her song 😭😭😭#Cannot believe you still don't have your song debut my queen the Odysseus economy is also in shambles

I desperately need “Be Your Light” to return in Illion the musical. Like…imagine if it was a Penelope song???? Something to keep Odysseus going through the Trojan war as a little reminder??? A reason he keeps going???
Imagine instead of “hey there bro don’t you know” from Polites, we get “Oh my love, don’t you know” from Penelope.
Actively filing a request to Jorge

Weird question to ask, but to every Sky fan who has head-canons/beliefs and theories about the Elders:
If you listen to this...
"How" do you see each Elder? In which role? And who is the "Odysseus" of the situation?
I'd just like to hear some opinions! I already have my own story about this - :)
