âPlayer ZeroâŚdo you copy?â
đŽ
By the grace of your headset, you begin to scan the dark, almost void-like, aperture thatâs hijacked your surroundings.
âCopy,â you report back to James.
âExcellent.â
Everything around you is black, a noisy puddle sits at your feet. The room is crisp from the AC, and the props smell like rubber tires. And soon, with a push of a button, you will come face to face with the Mind Flayer, saving everyone from this ill-fated town once and for all.
You canât believe this. What thousands will pay to do, you get to experience for free, having been one of the few selected to try out the new Stranger Things: Virtual Reality Game at the Las Vegas Sphere. (Not to mention, you're the biggest Stranger Things fan in your hometown and quite possibly the biggest Joseph Quinn fan in the state of Nevada).
Eddie's death left you completely shattered. He just fit in so well with the older members of the party that you were almost certain the Duffers would keep him around. But to your despair, alongside many others, they did what they do best and killed off another fan favorite.
But there was something beautiful that came out of Eddie's death. Because of Stranger Things 4, Joseph Quinn has been getting booked for acting gigs left and right, getting asked to come to fan conventions, and you were able to find a community on Tumblr who shared the same love for him and Eddie Munson, and with that notion alone, means the silly metalhead lives on through you guys.
Your dream is to meet Joe one day. Youâve been frantically saving up for the day you get to hug him and thank him for everything heâs done for you and others. Whenever that may be. Until then, all you could do is support his work and contribute to all of his supporting franchises. Much like this one.
âI canât wait to tell all my mutuals all about this game,â you think to yourself.
James permits you to walk around in order to adapt to your environment. Youâre already planning what to tell your friends based on your observations so far. But since pictures aren't allowed, your phone remains in your back pocket for the time being.
âAlright Player Zero,â your guide further instructs you. âYouâre going to walk through the gate. And from there the game will begin.â
âAnd what if I need to pee?â
The comment earns you a chuckle from James. âThatâs fine. Youâll just have to take your headset off and call out to me.â
James asks you if you have any other questions. You couldnât help yourself.
âWill I interact with any characters? Like Eddie?â
âNo Eddie unfortunately, itâs primarily the Mind Flayer,â James answers honestly. âGoal of the game is to fight the monster.â
âUnderstood,â you pout in disappointment.
âHey but Iâll be surprised if you run into anyone though,â James laughs. âTell âem I say hi if you do.â
Just then, a neon orange projection appears from the corner of your eyes, followed by some squelching noises that gnaw uncomfortably at your ears. And as you get closer to it, you can hear the shrieks of some very familiar, unearthly creatures.
âWalk through the gate now, Zero,â James instructs you.
You take a deep breath, a little scared at how vivid the graphics are but reassuring yourself that all of this is just a game.
âWalking,â you report.
Hobbling into the gate, the synthetic warmth massages your ankle as you squeeze your way on in. You land on the bottom tier, a floor below the floor you started on... one that you weren't aware existed until you continued to walk around.
âThis isnât so bad,â you mutter to yourself.
Just then, the noise around you cuts off and your headset broadcasts to black.
Tssssss.
Unsure whether or not this was part of the game, you continue to tread around the nothingness that is around you. Holding your arms out to keep your balance doesnât seem to help, because the more you graze onto nothing, the more panicked you become.
This is odd. Whereâs the Mind Flayer?
âJames?!â you call out, your heart nearly beating out of your chest now.
Nothing.
Suddenly, obnoxious TV static overpowers your headspace. Itâs accompanied by lightheadedness, the brightness of it all mercilessly stinging your eyes, and the high-pitched feedback noise that soon fills your ears is probably enough to make you go deaf for the day. Great, now you know why this is a trial run.
âJames!â you hiss again quietly. âAnyone?!â
No response. You were never warned about this part. Was this even supposed to happen?
Absolutely frustrated now, you reach for your headset to get out of the game yourself. But to your surprise, youâre stunned to have gotten two palms full of your hair, and part of your face. There was no headset on your head. Youâre walking in a void of nothingness, with no one around to help you.
âI need to peeâŚâ is your final attempt to connect with somebody.
The ear-piercing, scratching sounds start up once again. This time grainier, louder. It continues for a while as you run around in a panic before halting to complete radio. silence.
âWh-â you pant. âWhatâs happeni-â
JOLT!
âOH SHIT!â
Youâre then met with an abrupt, devastating PUSH that sends you flying across the room and down â what you could only describe as â an endless black hole. Your hand clutches at your chest as an attempt to soothe yourself. Youâre almost sure your heart stopped for a minute due to absolute shock.
SMACK!
In a millisecond, your body lands on a prickly patch that you soon make up to be loose straws of hay. Blending into the scenery now is that of a remote grass field, with the smell of fresh trees and newly cut blades of grass dancing around your nose.
You canât think of any place in Las Vegas that would have a barren field like this. Nor can you think of a town nearby with this much of a Midwestern flare, this much empty â and grassy â land, and this much Kodak green undertone to its atmosphere. UnlessâŚ
It canât possibly be. Are you in Hawkins?
You're standing around like an idiot trying to figure out how this could've possibly happened.
You knew this experience was 'all-immersive', but judging by the description, you were supposed to be taken to the Upside Down... and the backwoods by Reefer Rick's hideout was a long commute from. Was this Mind Fight going to be after-the-fact?
Trudging towards Reefer Rickâs now, you begin to think of other ways to get James' attention. But when you hear the faint voice of someone else coming from inside the abandoned lake house, suddenly getting out of the game becomes less of a priority.
âEddieâŚâ the familiar voice softly commands.
Eddie?
The voice you register belongs to no one other than Gaten Matarazzo, or Dustin Henderson in this sense. But thatâs impossible, you think to yourself. James said that there were no characters in the game.
âWe are on... your side...â
Oh, itâs this scene. Peaking through the door that was open a mere three inches, you're stunned to see the four dimensional manifestations of the characters you've grown to love right in front of your very eyes.
IMPOSSIBLE.
It's them. You almost stumble backwards when you see Sadie Sink and Maya Hawke alongside Gaten; and despite having their backs towards you, you know it is for sure them, and not some workers hired to play the part.
Your eyes travel to the corner of the room. Very much to your surprise, evident by the butterflies in your stomach, you're met with Joe Keery as Steve Harrington, and Joseph Quinn... the love of your life... in the flesh... your Eddie. Both characters are too focused on each other to even register your presence. If they are even able to see you at all.
You continue to be the fly on the wall while taking a few collected deep breaths. There's no way that they're in front of you right now. There's no way a whole SCENE from the show is panning out in front of you right now. Almost as if it's real time.
âI swear on my mother!â Gaten Dustin continues, trying to reason with Eddie so he can drop the knife and let go of Steve. He turns to the others for help.
âRight?! Guys?!â
âYes, yes we swear,â the party clamors together in attempts to calm Eddie down.
âOn Dustinâs mother,â Maya Robin attempts.
âYeah, DustinâsâŚDustinâs motherâŚâ
Keeryâs voice is strained as he gulps in fear. Reasonably so, because thereâs a knife pointed at his throat in this scene.
You clear yours at the doorway, causing everyone to deadpan to you in shock. So they can see you. And sure enough when this happens, thatâs when your gaze lands on him. And his gaze lands on you.
Itâs insane. Itâs like you are looking Joseph Quinn in the eyes, but at the same time, itâs not him. It is literally â Eddie Munson. He's even more beautiful than you imagined.
âOn Dustinâs mother?â you speak.
âJesus, where did YOU spawn from?!â Gaten Dustin exclaims.
âWhoâs that?â Sadie Max wonders.
âIâŚdonât know,â Maya Robin answers.
Immediately, Dustin runs to shield Eddie from your sight. But itâs already too late. And plus, Eddieâs eyes have already met yours. Studied yours.
âIâmâŚâ you speak. âIâm here to help.â
You figured while James figures out what the actual fuck is wrong, that youâd interact with the characters. Theyâre right in front of you after all, and actually responding.
"I'm Zero..." you explain to them. "I'm not... I'm not from here, but I know a hell of a lot about this place. A lot more than you guys think."
âYou know about whatâs going on around here?â Robin inquires.
You nod. âAnd I know part of who is behind it all, and what we can do to stop him.â
"H...him?"
Eddie's timid stare pierces straight into you. It's enough for your knees to buckle, but you know you have to keep yourself collected otherwise the projections of these characters would probably freak out at you.
You hear a tiny thud sound against the wooden floor. Eddie has dropped the knife. Breathing a sigh of relief now, Steve sinks to the ground to gather himself. Meanwhile, a small circle gathers around you.
âThere are⌠greater forces at bay,â you explain. âAnd it goes way beyond what you know about the demogorgons, the shadow monster, the Mind Flayer⌠Thereâs this... really powerful warlockâŚand a shadow that looms over him to do some really horrible things. And itâs not who youâd expect.â
âYou know about those too?â Steve asks.
You nod. Eddie only seems more confused.
"A lot more than you know..." you warn him. "Trust."
"What else do you know about?" Dustin questions.
"I know about Eleven, and Will," you answer. "And how they're safer in California than here, but that doesn't necessarily exempt them from danger."
They all exchange looks with one another.
You can't help but look over at Eddie again.
"I know what happened to Chrissy," you say to him. He looks back up at you. "She's that nice girl from the middle school talent show, right?"
"I left her there," is all he says. He knows you understand what he meant by it. "I'm just a coward."
"You're not a coward, Eddie. Nothing you could've done could've prevented what happened at the trailer."
âZeroâŚâ Dustin whispers to himself. Then he looks up at you with suspicion. Pointing an accusatory finger at you, he says, "How do we know you weren't sent by Hawkins Lab to spy on us?! You're a number after all."
"I'm not a number from the lab, trust me," you roll your eyes, slightly annoyed at Curly and his superstition. But it makes sense. "I don't even know Eleven, okay? Just think of me as... a guardian. From another universe. I think I was sent here to help you guys. I know how this shit ends, after all."
âHow does it end?â Eddie asks you. âF-for us? For me?â
You turn to him in anguish.
âNot well, Iâm afraid,â you respond honestly. âBut if you guys are open to my help, I can get us out of this mess unscathed. Build up some leeway.â
You turn to Max who only seems to be backing further away from you. It's definitely in her character to do so, Maxine has always struggled to ask for help. But you know, deep down in those fearful blue eyes, she wants your help as much as she wants to run away from it.
"And we're gonna break you out of that curse," you say to her.
You're no expert on the laws of space-time, but it doesn't take a scientist to realize that you're in a different Hawkins reality. And knowing there are countless outcomes and experiences for existence, you can make this reality your own.
Which means, if you choose to stay in this 'game', and play the cards correctly, the Eddie standing directly in front of you has a second chance at life.
Nowâs your chance to fix it. And experience an altered timeline. You don't know how this is possible, but it is. And after all, the Rule of Probability states, "the probability of an impossible event is Zero."
âIf you guys want to save everyone in Hawkins, including Eddie and Max, you guys have to do EXACTLY what I say do you understand?â

please tell me more abt Yancy in mark TV
Okay so my thoughts on Yancy in all the Markiplier TV stuff is really a mash up if a lot of different headcanons I've collected from different places and then some.
So like, big fan of the headcanon that Yancy is one of Mark and Celine's kids, and he ended up in prison cause he got blamed for the events of wkm. I know it's not perfectly supported by the canon or anything but it's fun, so, yâknow, who cares. I can do whatever I want lol. And then I don't know how common this headcanon actually is bc I picked it up from like one specific fic, but Yancy as the security guard for Wilford's club in Wilford Motherloving Warfstache.
So like, Yancy grows up in Markiplier Manor for most of his life, Celine gets custody during the divorce, the events of wkm happen (maybe Yancy is the one who told Celine about the poker night, having heard about it from William, and that's why Celine shows up in the middle of wkm?) So then when Celine goes off and never comes back he goes out looking for her, police show up while he's there, and between intense unethical police interrogations and the fucked up house immensely fucking with his head, he ends up convinced he did do the crime and pleads guilty, landing him in Happy Trails eventually. Canon ensues, Yancy decides he's gonna get out on parole after God knows how long he's been in there. At some point he meets Wilford, neither of them recognize eachother really, but there is like, some subconscious shit working definitely. Wilford's like, 'hey do you want to work at my club? I'll walk you right out of this fucking prison' and Yancy is like 'nah man, I'm gonna keep on track to make parole, do this the right way, but if the job offer is still open in a few months đ' and Wilford's like 'okay, sick' and so when Yancy gets out a few month's later, there's Wilford inexplicably, ready to pick him up. And so he goes to work as security at the club, and things are actually pretty chill most of the time, so Yancy's got a lot of free time to do his own thing, and he's got no fucking clue where Wil's money comes from but he gets payed well, so he's enjoying the job, even if maybe he'd rather be performing. He does some community theater stuff here and there, occasionally performs in the club, often ends up ranting about his narrative ideas to Wil after hours. And eventually Wil is like 'hey, you know I own a TV network right? I could give you a show.' And Yancy absolutely fucking takes that opportunity. Which is how he ends up at Markiplier TV.
I feel like his show(s) would be this weird tonal mess where it's like a Disney Channel musical sitcom, there's songs and comedy and it's all very much giving young teen drama with constant bits and inconsistent lore, but then the storylines all deal with very serious and realistic topics. There's fucked up families, and deep dives into the horrors of the American prison system, and death, and grief, all portrayed very realistically and with all the complexity they deserve. But also all of the character's act like disney sitcom characters the second they're not handling the serious stuff, and there's always at least one musical number per episode. It's actually probably really cool if you're into weird shit like that (as I absolutely would be), the video essays discussing it are probably insane. But it maybe doesn't speak to the average audience lmao. Yancy doesn't really realize and doesn't care. It's reaching the audiences it needs to.
Anyways I think him and Bim get along the vast majority of the time, they've got a mutual love of theater and a mutual hatred of Ed, cause I mean, look at Ed's lore and then look at Yancy. Yeah Yancy fucking hates Ed and his whole deadbeat dad thing. Luckily fights around the office are so common here that it's pretty easy for Yancy to get away with punching Ed in the face a little bit any time he says some asshole shit. Also maybe everyone turns a little bit of a blind eye to it. So really he feels right at home.
I think Google freaks him out from the get-go, and he's a little more interested in trying to get some info on the weird android shit from Bing at first, but quickly finds out that Bing can be like twice as uncanny as Google, and so he just kind of ends of steering clear of both after not too long in the office. I think they grow on him eventually but it takes some warming up lol
I think he and The Host actually get along. Like, maybe he freaked Yancy out a little bit at first, and then he started to realize the two of them had a lot in common in terms of their opinions and beliefs, and instantly he started getting all buddy buddy with the guy, and then it was the Host's turn to be a little freaked out, cause he's not exactly used to people being so enthusiasticlly friendly towards him. So they become friends. Yancy's always there to make sure he gets included in work get togethers and such since some of the other guys find him intimidating.
Dr. Iplier finds him a little exasperating seeing ad he is probably constantly getting hurt and also constantly leading to other injuries around the office (mostly Ed's, let's be honest), but, yâknow, his enthusiasm and friendliness around the office probably win him over eventually, and his kindness to the Host probably helps.
The Jims and Yancy get along great, in fact Yancy is probably the only person around the office who actively gets along with them besides Wilford.
Wilford is always very supportive of Yancy, and Yancy still picks up shifts at the club a few times a week. I think maybe he's the only one who's met Abe out of everyone else at the office bc of his job. Abe knows who Yancy is and has tried dropping hints to Wil a few times, but they are not getting picked up. So it just kind of goes unspoken.
Dark and Yancy absolutely have the strangest dynamic. Dark definitely knows who Yancy is. Yancy does not know who Dark is, but I think he recognizes bits of his mother in Dark's personality and actions, and it freaks him out. Some one points put once that Dark and Yancy look alike and that they've got matching moles under their eyes and Dark leaves without saying anything, visibly upset, and Yancy starts wearing a bandaid over that cheek every day after. No one brings up that shit again. Dark basically let's Yancy get away with anything around the office, seemingly from a sense of guilt. Funds any ideas he has, let's him get away with bending rules, or beating the shit out of Ed, or whatever. But then Yancy does something minor, or something that puts himself in danger, and Dark starts lecturing, and Yancy gets real pissed off. The office stays tense for several days after every time. I think those are just about the only times at which Wil starts to recognize him. He usually doesn't sit on the thought for very long, as he's prone to do. But maybe he treats Yancy to a little something the next day any time one of those arguments goes down. It helps a bit, for both of them.
I don't think he knows the details of what went down in the manor, or that he's seen Mark since, or that he knows about Dark and Mark's whole fucking thing, and I hate to think about how incredibly badly it would go if he did find out.
#atlas speaks#this one is long lmao#big fan of this guy's whole thing#love being like 'i hate to think about how badly...' as if i didnât make up the scenario in which that traumatizing shit would happenđ

okay but like i'm browsing through new songs to listen to and i listened to conan gray's new song "yours" and the lyrics hit so hard so i was wondering if you can write a fic based off on that song if you're up for it?? thank u <333
đ'đŚ đđ¨đ đđ¨đŽđŤđŹ ~ đđĽđđ˘đ§đ đđ˘đŚđ˘đđŤđđŹđđŽ đą đđ!đđđđđđŤ
Summary: Everyone makes falling in love seem as though it is the answer to the world's greatest problems, that it can overcome even the greatest of odds. And yet here you are with a love that burns you from the inside out, yet those honeyed eyes drag you further into their trap despite all else.
Pairing: Alcina Dimitrescu x Reader, with a very quick appearance from the daughters.
Warnings: Heavy angst! Unrequited feelings and canon-typical violence and death. Please tread carefully if you could be affected by these topics!
Author's Note: Finally I'm finishing this request. I'm so sorry for the anon who requested it, I swear I started it the day of, but life escaped me. But here it finally is! As someone who is a fan of Conan Gray, this was a pleasure to write. What's your favourite song from his new album? I would love to know~ Other than that, happy reading everyone!
There was an allure to things you knew you could never have. An inexplicable yearning for something that is so far out of reach, and yet your heart calls out for it all the same. It pulls you close and stretches you thin, a whisper of possibility just inches from your fingertips. And what more out of reach was a Countess? A Lord of a village who carried the ethereality and power of a divine being, who with a single step makes known her confidence and strength, yet still had the grace and fluidity of someone who was raised in nobility.
She was nothing like you, a mere mortal snatched away from their home as payment for the right to survive in the village, not live, survive. What a hefty price to pay in return for such a feeble thing, yet surviving was the first step to living, was it not? So your parents paid the price happily, clinging to the selfishness of protecting their own lives in return for their childâs. One child for a generation of protection from the horrors of their home, not accounting for famine and sickness that could kill them off otherwise; it was a small price indeed.
It hurt you to know your parents had given you up so easily, but it hurt you even more to know that this had always been your fate. The cost of being the eldest child in the Village of Shadows. Perhaps had you not been so sheltered would you have accepted your fate far earlier than the moment you were shoved into a carriage and off to the castle. Perhaps had you been a bit braver would you have crept away as their backs were turned the evening they told you that you were to be sent away, braving the monsters that roamed in the dark of night. But what was life if not without regrets? So on the eve of your 21st birthday you were hauled off with nothing more than the clothes on your back and a bitter taste lingering in your mouth.
You had heard the rumours of the Castle. It was impossible not to. The horrors and torment followed by trails of deep crimson blood, the cruelty of its Mistress and her daughters not unknown. The mere thought had you shivering in your seat that day. How many young women had you known that all one day disappeared one by one, never to be seen again? And here you were, next in line.
It was a beautiful castle, that you could admit as you first walked through the front doors. Ornate furnishings and richly coloured wood, it was something straight out of a fairytale. Well, if you could ignore the disconcerting stains splattered around the expensive carpets and the screams ringing deep in the depths of the household.
That admiration was short-lived however because not even a second later you had your first encounter with the Dimitrescu daughters. Manifesting out of nowhere your eyes widened in shock momentarily, but you knew better than to let it show. No fear, that was how youâll survive. So you steeled your expression as they all examined the fresh batch of maids arriving at the castle, cackling as they probed and poked at each of them.
One of the daughters came up to you, the brunette one, and snickered before her sickle was pressed up to your neck. Your eyes widened for a moment before you could stop yourself and she snickered.
âNot so brave now, hm~?â she said with a smirk, eyes sparking with mischief. âDonât think I know what your play is, little one.â She presses the sickle in more firmly and you can do nothing but hold your breath in fear that one would be your last.
Then, a firm voice rings out in the hall and it's like time stops.
âEnough, Cassandra,â the voice says, and the brunette pulls away. You gasp out a breath as you clutch your chest, eyes darting around like a cornered feral cat.
Then you hear the soft clack of heels on the tiled floor, and all at once nothing but white fills your vision. Large fingers grasp your chin and force your eyes up to meet ochre eyes, sugary gaze that was nothing more than a front for the darkness within.
But you were a fool, not blinking twice and taking her as she was because all at once she was your salvation. A beauty amongst beasts, yet she was the most terrifying one of them all. But you were a fool and didnât see that at all, only a goddess who deemed you worthy enough of her presence.
Alcina Dimitrescu, Lady of the House and Lord to the Village you had all but left behind. You had caught her attention and life would never be the same.
It was never slow with Alcina Dimitrescu, even from the start she snatched you away in a flurry of saccharine words and well-timed affections because frankly, you were easy to play with. A child who acted as though they were okay, yet craved love and affection all the same deep down. Alcina Dimitrescu knew this, and you fell straight into her syrupy trap.
She took what she wanted without blinking twice, and you could only hope that you could feel the same satisfaction.
Blood, sex, anything she asked you would give, because that was what she expected. Anything less and you would be cast out, and as much as you loathe to admit it, you never wanted that. Because you found some sick satisfaction in pleasing her, you cared for her. Some fucked up form of love had manifested in you, but could you help it? When she acted just so, claiming you her favoured maid as you ignored the fact she brought in other maidens to her chambers all the same. Subtle affections that served enough for pets, not humans. But you ignored that, because even for a short while you held her attention and that was enough.
You gave and you gave as she greedily took it all, but still it was never enough. Because she would never be yours.
Oh, how your heart yearns for what it cannot have, what a cruel fate it was.
Your chest heaved as you greedily took in air, Alcina falling into place next to you on the bed.
âSweet thing, you have pleased me much today,â she says as she pulls her robe back on and motions for you to do the same, so you did, always wanting to please her. Getting up from the bed you knelt to pick up the clothes haphazardly tossed on the floor and redress. It was always like this, sickly sweet words spoken as you fell back down from your high, and what a high that was. Then you were kicked out like an unloved puppy in the rain. If you had been smarter you would have realized she toyed with you as the chemicals in your brain made your head a blur. With each word she dragged you deeper into her trap, ensnaring you in inescapable vines.
If only, right? And yet you never did. No, you only smiled softly at her, heart beating wildly in your chest as false hope crept its way in. What could kill hope after all? Nothing in this world, or the universe for that matter. And so, as foolishly as a lone lamb in the dark words did you speak your next words.
âI love you, my lady,â you say softly, so soft that no one but her would hear because they had no right to. Hesitantly you meet her gaze and saw that they were widened in surprise before they returned back to her usual gaze like nothing had changed.
For a moment you thought your affections were returned as her lips crept up into a smile before it became too much. It was no soft smile, no, it was too wide to be anything but ominous, eyes gleaming wickedly.
âAwww, foolish thing,â she said with a cruel laugh. âAs if someone as pathetic as you could be anything more than a pet I indulge in from time to time. Youâre nothing. Replaceable. In fact, why donât I show you how replaceable you are?â
Your eyes widened in fear as monstrous claws extended from her fingertips, dark as obsidian and wickedly sharp. Everything in your body told you to run, to scream, anything. But instead it was stuck frozen to your spot, as though the world had paused nothing but you.
Step by step she grew closer, dark grin only growing in size as her golden eyes you adored so much glinted devilishly.
âOh~ Your fear is delightful, little one. Like a lamb eyeing the sharp blade at the slaughter.â
A dance with the devil, thatâs what this was. The song was the rapid beat of your heart, the intermingled fear and love running through your veins. And what was a song without an end?
Fear was quickly replaced with sorrow as your eyes filled with tears, how cruel the string of your fate was, leading you to your demise by the one you loved most. You felt the moon looking down on you with pity, with the power to sway even the greatest of oceans she could not change this.
Perhaps in another life would this place be filled with warmth and tenderness, where the look in Alcinaâs eyes was one of eternal love, where her heart beats only for you, where she could be yours. But all you knew was that it was not this one.
At least you would die by her hand, see her beautiful face, honeyed eyes, and crimson lips one last time before you succumbed to the void. A little bit of heaven before hell.
Grasping your chin roughly, she forces you to be surrounded by nothing but her. âWhat a lovely wine weâll make out of you, darling,â she drawls sarcastically. âEver so useful even at the very end.â
With a final step her hand swings down, but not before you could whisper your final words out to the universe, to her; âI love you.â
A/N: Hi, this was wild for me to write because I usually don't write angst lol. Although I am quite happy with how it turned out, so I hope you enjoyed reading! As always, I hope you have a wonderful day/night wherever you are my lovelies~

Songs that make me think Spence
And why
i'm really not sure what this is. i just started keeping a list of songs that reminded me of spencer and here we are so enjoy are suggestion for part II are appreciated
Cold Cold Man by Saint Motel.... but as a duet with italics being Spencer and bold being his s/o
Quite slow to pay you compliments Or public displayed affections
But baby, don't you go over analyze No need to theorize I can put your doubts to rest
You're the only one worth seeing The only place worth being The only bed worth sleeping's the one right next to you
htCan I Call You Tonight by Dayglow
an on-again-off-again situationship with Spencer.
Voice so low Sneaking around, so it goes The power's out and I can't turn the fan on
but something bad happens to him or you
I'm trying to make up my mind Just how I feel I hear your voice on the phone Now I'm no longer alone
and of course, happy ending where you get together
Don't go, don't go so easy Don't go, don't go and leave me
The Archer by Taylor Swift
Mad, post-prison
I'm ready for combat I say I don't want that, but what if I do?
lots of relationships in his life
Easy they come, easy they go
Who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay?
he shot people and he's been shot
I've been the archer I've been the prey
Insecure, sad baby
Then hate my reflection, for years and years I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost The room is on fire, invisible smoke
All the king's horses and all the king's men Couldn't put me together again
I miss you by blink-182
Halloween is his fave
Weâll have Halloween on Christmas We can live like jack and sally
poor sad baby
This sick, strange darkness Comes creeping on, so haunting every time
Will you come home and stop this pain tonight? Stop this pain tonight
Clean by Taylor Swift
This song was absolutely written about Spencer's struggle with addiction, specifically in 3x16
Canonically, no one helped him out with his addiction
The water filled my lungs, I screamed so loud But no one heard a thing
In 3x16, he admits he's 10 months clean
Ten months sober, I must admit Just because you're clean, don't mean you don't miss it Ten months older, I won't give in Now that I'm clean, I'm never gonna risk it
Kid by Meija
sad spencer again
Give it, take it, I could break it Into a million pieces
About baby spencer going to college all alone
I'm a kid Oh my god I'm in over my head
because he knows so much and the team are always shushing him
Was it something I said? All these answers, but I forgot the question
Cigarette Daydreams by Cage The Elephant
sad spencer again
Close your eyes, so afraid Hide behind that baby face
About his relationship with Elle and his guilt about not knowing something was wrong before she left
Funny how it seems like yesterday As I recall, you were lookin' out of place Gathered up your things and slipped away
Pretty Boy by The Neighbourhood
His s/o dedicating the entire song to him
Ghosting by Mother Mother
Based after Maeve's death when Spencer's unable to sleep without seeing her, and the scene where they dance and he's able to let her go
Maeve lyrics
I've been ghosting, I've been ghosting along Ghost in your house, ghost in your arms When you're tossing, when you turn in your sleep It's because I'm ghosting your dreams
Spencer lyrics
And this is why I have decided To pull these old white sheets from my head I'll leave them folded neat and tidy So that you'll know I'm out of hiding
Maeve lyrics I remember, I remember the days When I'd make you oh-so afraid And this is why I have decided To leave your house and home un-haunted You don't need poltergeists for sidekicks
Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John
Spencer, post-prison and worried about his s/o knowing the truth about his life lyrics
If I told you things I did before Told you how I used to be Would you go along with someone like me? If you knew my story word for word Had all of my history Would you go along with someone like me?
S/o assuring him it doesn't matter to them lyrics
I would go along with someone like you It doesn't matter what you did Who you were hanging with We could stick around and see this night through
A healthy dose of Spencer-style insecurity and abandonment issues
Usually when things has gone this far People tend to disappear No one will surprise me unless you do

Her Second Return
Just like all of you, and especially my fellow Penny fans, I am absolutely devastated by the Volume 8 finale. I had been in quite a state these last few days, utterly heartbroken, and actually nauseous at times. It feels strange to me to be legitimately grieving a fictional character, but itâs not a bad thing to feel this way. To me, this just shows that CRWBY loves her just as much as us to have written her so well that we connect so completely with her, that it feels like we lost an actual piece of ourselves when sheâs gone.
But as you can probably tell by the title, this mega post isnât gonna be about accepting this end, not in the slightest! Today I want to share canon evidence that can point towards another return of our beloved quirky red headed cinnamon bun! Iâm here to spread this hope that I and others in the Nuts & Dolts dolts Discord server have!
I have this separated into many different sections to keep these thoughts organized. With that said, here goesâŚ
A Fatherâs Words:
In Episode 7 of Volume 7, âWorst Case Scenarioâ we learn the origins of Pennyâs aura, and thus her soul. We also learn that it takes more aura each time sheâs brought back. This leaves open an option that could be used at a later point.
Many people theorized that Pietro could indeed revive Penny one more time, which he would absolutely do. But there also lies the possibility that someone else could donate some of theirs, Iâm not sure about this as I feel like itâs akin to blood donation where compatibility matters or there's a high risk of altering her, but the possibility is definitely there.
Now, the conversation in Chapter 5 of Volume 8, âAmityâ that Pietro and Penny have is an important moment for both Father and Daughter. It was there to show how her death in PvP all that time ago really did have a heavy impact on him and is still affecting him to this day.
Instead of continuing to pretend that everything is A-okay, like he had done for most of Volume 7, he finally lets his true feelings about how it come out to Penny for what is quite likely the first time. Even going so far as to say "Are you asking me to go through that again?" when she offers to take the risk of trying to lift Amity with her power. He wants Penny to be able to live her life.
This entire scene with Pietro established âthis is what will likely happenâ even if circumstances are much different now, it doesnât negate the fact that this is a key part of Pennyâs story. Scenes like these have a purpose beyond simply making an eventual death all the more heart wrenching. Her never actually getting to live her life makes those scenes basically moot. It makes them effectively pointless from narrative point of view. Unless there's more to it.
Building Relationship:
The build up between Ruby and Penny the last two volumes has been absolutely phenomenal with a definite destination in mind, and this doesnât feel like that destination. So much of the arc of this season was to help Penny. This girl that our main protagonist absolutely adores and treasures, it would just be awful to throw all of that out for what amounts to an avoidable end. Why use so much of their precious and very limited runtime on deliberately building up this relationship only to end it abruptly, and permanently, when theyâre separated?
In my opinion, RT is definitely smarter now than to intentionally set up what was really looking like a budding gay relationship only to kill one of them for good. If N&D wasn't actually going in a romantic direction, why would they leave in all of the romance-adjacent stuff that they got, that's not how âjust friendsâ act. And that is not something you use such valuable time building up for absolutely no pay off whatsoever...
Representation of Hope:
At its core, RWBY has always been about hope. Itâs not at the forefront the whole time, but there's been an underlying theme of hopefulness that has persisted since it began. Some describe the show as a Hopepunk, I personally find this to describe RWBY really well. This genre of storytelling is about caring for things deeply and the courage and strength it takes to do so. Itâs about never submitting or accepting the way things are. Fighting for what you believe in and standing up for others. RWBY fits all of this extremely well. How does this relate to Penny? She has been shown to be a sign of hope for everyone, but especially for Ruby, the main main protagonist. A prerequisite for a Hopepunk story is the hope.
Her first death in V3 was something that fundamentally changed Ruby. For the first time in the series, we see our main character all but broken by this event. With the loss of Penny, immediately afterwards, Rubyâs hope followed. She made up for it through determination and force of will. We see it affect her multiple times throughout the journey to Volume 7. But upon her return in V7, Hope reached a high point for everyone, the sheer relief on Rubyâs face is plain to see!
In V8 chapter 5 âAmityâ, Penny literally raises hope by lifting the arena into the sky so Ruby could spread her message. And when she falls, and Amity with her, the connection is lost and hope plummets again. From there things take a very negative turn with the hack begins to take Pennyâs agency.
In chapter 11 âRiskâ is the point in the arc where everyone is reunited for the moment, so two separate hero stories are no longer a thing at that point in time. For the time being focus seemed to be shifted to care about the characters and how theyâre going to solve the current problems. This is also where Ruby reaches her lowest emotional point in the season.
Itâs not huge, but itâs interesting how connected this is. Before Ruby and Yang share a good cry over learning the possible fate of Summer, Yang brings up restoring optimism and hope to Ruby after the younger sister storms out of the room in frustration. This is where Pennyâs scenes take up the rest of the episode. Getting Penny back in control of her own body and safe again is what makes the ending of the episode much brighter, when just 5 minutes before Ruby had been distraught and scared. This then spills over into the group coming up with the plan to use the staff, putting the main group in a much better mood. Of all the things to go right, itâs interesting that itâs Penny.
Things go wrong with the plan in the end and Penny dies. I find it interesting that once again, Penny got them hopeful in their chances of doing something right. Given said plan succeeded but at the cost of Penny of all people, Penny is shown to be the beginning and end of hope for them
The highest and lowest points for hope seem to directly correlate to when Pennyâs around. When she comes back again, hope will return too, just like it had before. And because sheâll likely be back for good this time, the second return will probably be close to when Ruby is nearing the complete abandonment of hope. This would be pretty par for the course of the show honestly.
A little aside, but in a sense, Penny also represents Unity. The CCT in Vale fell after her first death, knocking out global communications and the unifying connection it gave. When it was restored for the briefest moment, she was there. Her body connected so she could allow for its launch, her soul lighting the night to hold up Amity with every ounce of her strength. So of course when the Hack succeeds and she falls, she takes global comms down again with her. At a smaller scale - even at the Hack's second last attempt to control her, she draws everyone in the Schnee Manor together. At the start of the volume, Yang states the one thing that they all agree on is not surrendering Penny.
Unity seems appropriate for one whose first song and wish was for but one friend, who would go on to find so many more in the process, and permit for a moment the possibility of all Remnant becoming friends once more. Where she first died, the name of the episode devoted to her story - Amity, "friendship", from the Latin root amicus, "friend" - she almost lives and dies with the very possibility of a united Remnant. It's no wonder she's a priority target for Salem, the great divider, and it seems natural that her next restoration may very well allow the next bid to bring the world together.
The Void Screams:
Moments after Penny's death, we hear a weird scream in the void space. It was a guttural, pained, angry scream, almost like the void space itself was crying out. All the portals shuddered and flickered when it happened.
Some think that this scream was Salem returning, but that happens earlier than Pennyâs death, her return is signaled with cinder's arm acting up. We know this because after the arm finished flailing uncontrollably, Cinder said triumphantly "she's back." If it were Salem screaming, it would have happened after she fixed herself, but it didn't.
And I doubt Cinder would have been surprised or unsettled by it considering she was happy Salem returned not long before it. And why would a Salem scream affect the portals anyway, she has no connection to the staff or it's magic.
Another thing to consider is the fact sound is not transmitted through the portals. Otherwise, they would've heard Oscar and the rest calling for them, or the screams of the citizens of Mantle and Atlas. This lowers the possibility of that scream being from Salem even further.
The sound really seems to be coming from something else entirely within the void, and that something is not at all happy. Thereâs also the fact that Penny was the only person who died in the void space, everyone else was just thrown out of it like Ruby and Co. The only logical cause to me is Penny. Her body was a product (or byproduct) of the same creation magic that made the void space, her blood seems to have been a trigger.
Now I can't be sure about it, but this makes me feel like Penny is almost a part of creation itself? For whatever this thing is to be so angry, that is the only explanation I can think of currently. But all of this could possibly relate to the Narnia allusion of 'the willing victim killed in a traitor's stead' that others have brought up, which will be covered next.
Narnia Parallels:
Atlas has several parallels and references to fictional places (putting aside real world ones like the United States). One of those is that of Narnia, both on the surface and on a deeper level. It is a land of winter year round, where people struggle to survive and there is a present divide between those loyal to the current Monarch and those who are not. James is a parallel to Jadis, the White Witch, a ruler whose thoughts and cares arenât exactly centered around the actual well being of the people. The hologram table in Ironwoodâs office is designed to look like stone, like the Stone Table which features prominently in the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. He has a handpicked cadre of special agents/secret police, like how Maugrim and his wolves served Jadis. Another key parallel is how Jadisâs winter sets in to oppress and kill everyone in Narnia, but the Witch provides aid and protection to her loyal followers. She has all the power to spare harm to others, and uses it only for the loyal. As soon as Mantle splits from James and Atlas, no care is taken to protect them from the cold of Solitas even though he has every ability to turn the heating grid back on. His protection is only for the loyal.
Now that the parallel is established, let's look into the details. Starting with how James plays the role of Jadis.
"I had forgotten that you are only a common boy. How should you understand reasons of State? You must learn, child, that what would be wrong for you or for any of the common people is not wrong in a great Queen such as I. The weight of the world is on our shoulders. We must be freed from all rules. Ours is a high and lonely destiny." These are the words Jadis says in the Magicianâs Nephew to justify the blood civil war she and her sister had waged for rulership of Charn, before she came to Narnia. She won that war, technically, but only after the last battle had been lost and her sister had marched right up to her so that they were face to face. Jadisâs troops were dead, her followers had surrendered, and the capital was under full control of her sister. But, she still had one card, one ultimate play to win and prove the throne of Charn was rightfully her. The Deplorable Word, a piece of old magic that killed everyone and everything except for her on Charn. It was monstrous, senseless, cruel beyond measure. But it got her that hollow victory. This mindset, the disregard for the people except as tools for her own will, the ultimate âaoeâ destructive move that no one had even considered her using, the unwillingness to stop even when by all practical measures the war is over, is a shocking parallel to James. In many ways, he is Jadis in mindset and deed.
Then there is the shared desire for A Thing that both James and Jadis have. For James itâs the Winter Maiden and control over her. For Jadis itâs the Silver Apples from the Tree of Youth. And funnily enough, the Maiden Powers parallel the Apples quiet well. These apples grant power and a life of eternal beauty, but should not be taken or eaten on oneâs own initiative. They must be given, a gift granted by another, or only suffering will come from obtaining them. "For the fruit always works â it must work â but it does not work happily for any who pluck it at their own will. If any Narnian, unbidden, had stolen an apple and planted it here to protect Narnia, it would have protected Narnia. But it would have done so by making Narnia into another strong and cruel empire like Charn, not the kindly land I mean it to be.â Jadisâs immortality, and some of her power, come from the fact that she ate an Apple of her own will after stealing her way into the garden where the Tree of Youth had been planted. She gained the eternal life she had wanted and the power along with it, but she did so by taking it and was cursed because of it. Her skin turned pale and her lips blackened as if she were a frozen corpse given life. She will be trapped in a life of misery and hate according to Aslan- oh hey Cinder, howâs having stolen the Power you always wanted working out for you? Cinder had the power she wanted, but she only got hungrier, eager to claim more and increase her might. But in her pursuit she was defeated and humiliated by Raven, had to steal her way out of Mistral, and then suffered defeat after defeat while in Atlas. Only in the end, when she didnât keep pursuing the Maiden Power, did she get any kind of victory.
The reason these parallels to Narnia are so important is one of the most famous events of the series. The cracking of the Stone Table and the rebirth of Aslan after his death. âWhen a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backward.â Well, the âStone Tableâ in Jamesâs office has cracked, and Penny strikes me as a pretty willing victim. She has never actually committed any actual treachery or harm, as she was the Protector of Mantle, and fought for its and Atlasâs people until the very end. And because of her death, the actual traitor, Winter, who loyally served James until he had gone too far, was saved. Through Pennys self sacrifice, Winter was saved. So now Death itself will start working backward.
(Major props to my friend @catontheweb for writing this section, I was getting nowhere with it, if they weren't there this part wouldn't exist!)
Norse Mythology:
The tree we see in the post credit scene gives off some serious Yggdrasil vibes. Also called the World Tree, it is essentially all of creation in Norse Mythology. It connects all nine realms, including the God realms of Asgard, the human realm of Midgard, and the underworld of Hel.
Humans are born from the branches of Yggdrasil. The web of Wyrd is woven for every person once they're born, and their path is set from there regardless of how many times the souls cycle over. But at the end, they're destined to end up in one of the worlds, for a myriad of reasons.
I believe Penny landed closest to this giant tree. She was on the center platform in the void space, so if that space is directly above the island(?) the tree is on, it makes sense for her to fall by the center nearest to the tree. This would not only open up all kinds of possibilities for the volume in general, but it would also create options for Penny.
The whole of Yggdrasilâs representations fit well into Pennyâs story. Birth, growth, death and rebirth. We can count Pennyâs appearance in V7 as birth for now, her growth is all her development in leaving =the military and becoming a Maiden, her death just happened, and her rebirth would be her revival. And this is a cycle sheâs gone through before.
The Norse god Odin and Yggdrasil have quite a connection. In one story, Odin cut out one of his own eyes to gain knowledge from a pool underneath Yggdrasil. The only one that fell whose eyes alone are incredibly significant to the story was Ruby. So, they could choose to have her allude to Odin by having Ruby make some kind of deal with whatever entity likely rules over this magical place. An eye for Pennyâs life.
Thereâs another story about Odin, Yggdrasil and the pursuit of knowledge. Odin so loved knowledge, that he sacrificed himself in a quest to learn the deeper magic of runes. It was believed one could only learn the magic spells from runes in death. So, Odin hung himself on Yggdrasil for nine days as an offering, and teetered between life and death. After he mastered the last spell on the ninth night, he ritually died and all light was extinguished from the world. Odinâs death lasted until midnight, when he was reborn and light returned to the world.
This story doesnât fit Penny perfectly, but allusions often donât. So If she really did land near the tree, she could be another loose representation of Odinâs story here. What she did wasnât for knowledge, but to save her friends and keep Cinder from getting the Winter Maiden power. She believed it necessary that she sacrifice herself to achieve this end. As we established, Penny represents Hope, so her death means the loss of hope. This parallels Odinâs story of his death meaning the loss of light itself. So if this theory holds up, it would make this death temporary, until her rebirth and the return of Hope with her once again.
Alternatively, Ruby has the potential of loosely representing Odin in this story as well. Odin later uses the knowledge of the runes to do many things, but the most relevant one right now is awakening the dead. Both of these stories are about making a personal sacrifice to gain something that is desired. Ruby would absolutely make such sacrifices if it meant saving Penny.
It is said that Odin lived âaccording to his highest will unconditionally, accepting whatever hardships arise from that pursuit, and allowing nothing, not even death, to stand between him and the attainment of his goals." This sounds like Penny's arc of accepting the WM powers. This is more just a general connection between Penny and Odin, but I found it interesting.
Side Note: I encourage anyone whoâs interested to look into RWBY connections to Norse Myth, thereâs a surprising amount of things that feel eerily similar to the show. Likely just coincidental, but itâs fun to think about!
(If I got any of this wrong, I sincerely apologize by the way. I researched as best I could, but I admit it could have been lacking.)
Ambrosius and the Staff:
Ruby told Ambrosius "we kinda wanna keep her around longer than that" as part of her very specific instructions. Then Penny died about ten to fifteen minutes, at the absolute most thirty minutes later in-universe. I donât know about you, but to me that seems very short to be considered âlonger than thatâ. Technically it is, but when writing a story and a character says something like that, you typically donât just kill the character they were referring to basically right away. It makes sense for a week-by-week watch, but in a volume binge, which many viewers do, it becomes ironic how fast Penny dies after being removed from her robotic body.
The first time we see the staff of creation being used, it's to save Penny. Using the staff of creation to help Penny is a sign of how incredibly important she is.
Theyâve even got this entire transformation sequence for her, so it wouldnât make sense for them to throw all that away two episodes later. In a meta context, itâs a massive waste of time and budget considering the asset creation for Penny.
Penny is a character who has already hopped bodies two times. And now we're supposed to just believe that this time it really is a final death? Just two episodes after we were explicitly told her body isn't what matters, that "Her soul is who she is" and that "the mechanical parts are just extra"? From a writing perspective, it feels strange, like your breaking a promise right after making it. And frankly, CRWBY is better than that, which makes me think this is not the actual end for her.
A possible connection between Penny, Ruby, and the Staff (thus Creation) can be seen in the intro. As Ruby is falling and being dragged down into the darkness, she is shown reaching for the staff. In the void space, Penny is the one with the relic. So with Penny having this strong connection to Creation, and the lyrics âfight for every lifeâ playing as Ruby reaches for the staff, itâs a safe assumption to make, with the knowledge we now have, that the Staff of Creation represents Penny in this particular moment. Which could mean that V9 will be about, at least partially, fighting for Pennyâs life.
Musical Hints:
In terms of music, Friend, as a song for Penny, is very dissonant from the episode itself. The song is oddly cheerful for Pennyâs recent untimely death, and it overall highlights the wrong parts of death. Itâs simply too happy to be a song about losing one of the most, if not the most joyous characters in the entire show. The song also abruptly ends. Thereâs no outro, and while this could symbolize the fact that Penny died young, it could be that the song itself is unfinished in a story sense.
What do we hear just before the song finishes, though? A progression of notes that sounds eerily similar to the last line of the opening of Volume 8. The notes for âFight for evâry lifeâ and âWho finâlly felt alive'' share a similar melodic structure, they arenât perfect clones of each other, but they are incredibly similar, to the point where it seems intentional. Penny may very well be the life that the opening song is fighting for. It is also worth noting that the line âFight for every lifeâ comes just after âSometimes itâs worth it all to risk the fall,â which is the exact wording used for the description in the Volume 8 finale. Team RWBY risked the fall, yet, strangely the opposite of fighting for every life happened with Pennyâs sacrifice. Perhaps the time to fight for every life has yet to happen, and we will see it come Volume 9.
For another thing, the lyrics for Friend are entirely centered on Pennyâs feelings for Ruby, to the point where they read very much like a bittersweet love song. The music itself is incredibly cheerful, as mentioned previously, creating a mood whiplash with the end of the volume. Why would we hear a song about Pennyâs feelings for Ruby, sounding like a love song, if her death is supposed to be a tragic sacrifice akin to Pyrrhaâs? The song may very well be giving a clue into its future use in the show proper.
If this was meant to be a good bye song, why make it so cheerful and romantic sounding? There's only one part about her dying and even then, it's just too accepting and goes right back into cheerfulness. The song is also pretty hopeful, telling Penny's story in a fairly chronological order. And the part where she talks about sacrifice is quite pointedly followed up by one about feeling alive. It also ends with the super cheerful chorus, the word "alive" being the last... (Remember the episode title: The Final Word)
(I want to thank my friend @shadow-0f-x for writing the majority of this section! I was struggling to choose how to tackle it as I am not well versed in music theory.)
What We Didnât See:
It is likely that Penny understood Jaune's semblance better than him and figured something out about itâs abilities in the same way that she understood Ruby's semblance better than her. She had plenty of time to observe his semblance up close as he boosted her aura to stave off the virus. Because of that intentionally timed cutaway in the finale, we donât get to hear her explain herself after her strained âTrust me.â All of that seems really suspicious to me.
Pyrrha Parallel:
Pyrrha and Penny both sacrificed themselves to stop or stall Cinder. Jaune tried to convince the both of them to stop. With Pyrrha, he failed, while with Penny he actively helped her sacrifice herself. Doesnât make sense for the guy who was determined not to let anyone else do what Pyrrha did, unless of course Penny assured him sheâd be alright.
The Moment:
RT including the suicide hotline in the description shows that they're aware that Penny basically committed assisted suicide, seeing it as a noble sacrifice worth doing to save her friends. They're aware, and I believe they're smart enough to condemn that decision to hell and back.
The best way to do that in my opinion is to pull her back into the land of the living and let her witness first hand the consequences of throwing her life away so freely. This would show Penny how her actions affected others so maybe she could learn to truly value herself. To not think herself expendable. It would be bold and unwise to portray this choice as something good, unless it was going to be called upon later and be pointed out for how horrible it really is.
On top of this, Penny was way too content with her death, happy even. There's no way team RWBY is letting her stay content with it. Itâs almost as though we're supposed to join Ruby and Co. in calling bullshit on what Penny is saying and doing because no, Penny, this is not how things are meant to work. It's as if Penny was basically saying "I want to die for my friends" because most of the volume had been about everyone else making sure she didn't die. She knows it will hurt them. She knows.
At the peak of it all, a choice like this will totally destroy Ruby. It may very well be her breaking point for Volume 9. Curiously, the moment itself is written like itâs the first choice Pennyâs ever made, yet the entire Volume shows this isnât the case. However, this is the first choice that Pennyâs made solely independently and itâs rather pertinent that the choice she makes is a mistake. Outside of giving Winter the Maiden gift and saving the day temporarily, this sacrifice will not have any lasting positive effects. Jaune will be saddled with the grief of killing Penny. Ruby will have to live with losing her best friend and not being able to protect her a second time, and Winter now has the burden of the Winter Maiden abilities, making her a target of Cinder. This is a bad thing, and Penny needs to see the long term consequences.
Transfer of Power:
As we all know, colors in RWBY are really important and get a lot of focus in the show. That means the yellow we see as Penny gives Winter the Maiden Powers was intentional and likely important, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Itâs possible that the transfer effect being yellow could have something to do with Jauneâs semblance. When Fria gave the power to Penny, the effect was very much blue, so this transfer should have been green since she was the one giving it this time. The weirdness of this transfer and the focus on color in RWBY really makes it look like somethingâs up with how that went down.
A little off topic, but Penny saying "I won't be gone, I'll be part of you." makes me think... Winter is smart, so when she gets time to think about what Penny said, maybe she'll arrive at the same question many in the audience came to; if she's literally part of Winter, can they be separated again? If Winter starts questioning that, the possibility of Penny coming back just skyrockets.
Fria actually tells Penny "I'll be gone" before giving her powers up, which is an interesting contrast to Penny telling Winter "I won't be gone". She may have gotten that line from Winter be all philosophical in V7, saying Fria was now a part of Penny, but it hits differently coming from an actual Maiden. S5o itâs possible that Maidens usually actually will be gone, but Jaune's semblance did something to change that.
This could go well with the theory that they won't need to find an aura transfer machine, or build another one, because Jaune will have a semblance evolution allowing him to do the transfer instead. It might actually be that this evolution already happened and the golden light we saw was Jaune transferring penny's aura to Winter in some way?
An observation that I find interesting is when Penny gives winter the powers, not only is the aura yellow but penny completely glows yellow too, and she obviously starts to disappear, but she doesnât seem to fully disappear, she just glows.
It's possibly a fading out effect and she does fully fade but animation makes bright light easier, and so we don't actually see her disappear because she's dead and not gone. But it does once again emphasize the color yellow here!
And the color is coming from Penny, it does go up Winter's arm a bit, but Penny is clearly the source. This transfer is so weird and Iâm not really sure how to interpret it. There's just actually no reason that we are aware of to make the effect yellow here is the thing. Unless it has something to do with either Jaune or Ambrosius, or potentially a combination of both...
Jauneâs Aura:
The way we see Jaune's aura break in the finale is strange. His aura shouldn't be breaking here. It had been long enough since he was boosting Penny, he's had time to recharge, and it didn't look like it was a strain on him at all. Plus, we know he has a lot of aura, so there probably wasn't too much to recharge in the first place.
He has a massive amount of aura, it has never broken before as far as I remember. Even if it has though, that doesnât make this occurrence any less odd. It should absolutely never be a one-hit KO. We didn't see anything that would've drained it, that should not have been enough to break his aura. Unless he did something - something that would require a huge amount of aura - that we just didn't see. That amount of aura drain is far more than just an attempt at healing would do, Jaune absolutely did something with his semblance that took up almost all of his aura.
Pinocchio Allusion:
As any Penny fan knows, her character allusion is Pinocchio, the puppet who became a real boy. Penny deviates from the allusion by having always been a real girl, as Ruby is quick to point out, but she shares many story beats with her original story including multiple deaths. In the original story, Pinocchio dies from being hung by his own strings due to his poor decision making and he dies. Sounds a little familiar, does it not? This is where his tale originally ended. Readers were unsatisfied with this ending however, so the author decided to change the story by reviving Pinocchio and teaching him to be more careful.
Unlike Pinocchio making all the wrong decisions, Penny often makes the right ones, or ones she thinks is right, when concerning others. While usually a good thing, this has meant Penny almost giving herself up multiple times during V8, her last attempt being successful. This is where Penny and Pinocchio begin to share similarities again. They are both very reckless when it concerns themselves. This carelessness comes from different places, but it ends with the same result of them endangering their lives and even sometimes losing them.
In the Disney movie, Pinocchio dies by drowning after going to rescue Geppetto and washes up on the shore (like the beach in V8âs post credit scene). His father is devastated and takes him home to grieve, but as a reward for his selflessness in rescuing his father, the Blue Fairy returns and brings him back to life, as well as granting him humanity. Penny sacrificed her life as well, and it stands to reason that she should be rewarded for it, much like her allusion was.
Penny got her maiden powers from someone with blue aura and then gave her powers to someone with blue aura. So it could be that not only Ambrosius, but Fria and Winter as well represent the Blue Fairy. It could be set up for Winter helping to bring Penny back to life once more. Itâs an out there theory I admit, but itâs not outright impossible either. The Blue Fairy in Pinocchio saved him three times that I know of, so RWBY having three representations does make sense.
Geppetto wished for him to live as a real boy, but it depended on what path Pinocchio took. This is very reminiscent of Penny and Pietro. Pietro wants to see her live her life, and surely with him absent in V8C14 that didn't work, despite Penny choosing. Her father did not see her happy enough to live her life, and will only be able to learn her death through others. But Pinocchio's themes were life and being alive. So the likelihood that this is not her end yet is quite high!
A Girl That Fell Through the World:
Penny could be the girl who fell through the world. The girl in the story fled the consequences of a choice. The only person who chose her ultimate fate was Penny. The others were pushed into the void, but she chose to die. The consequence of her choice is Rubyâs grief first and foremost, which Penny wonât see. The girl who fell through the world does come back though, and the world will be changed severely with Pennyâs absence. Alternatively, it could also be Penny coming back to Wonderland or wherever they currently are, as long as itâs unrecognizable to her.
What Returning Brings:
Others might say another return would have no story relevant purpose, but I wholeheartedly disagree. Penny gives a profoundly youthful, joyous, and wondrous outlook on the world and story that we hadn't seen since Ruby in Volumes 1-3(not the end), Penny returning would bring a much needed levity back in after the despair they will undoubtedly be going through. While not necessarily a huge thing in most other shows, for RWBY, a show largely about keeping up hope, an ounce of such relief is a necessity.
As much as I hate saying it, Pennyâs death does actually make some narrative sense because she had to pass on the Maiden powers. (They could have done this in a number of ways, and I personally think they chose rather poorly, but I digress.) Throughout this whole volume, we can see Penny seemingly being set up to join the main cast, but would have been too strong with the powers. This also accomplishes ridding her of the burden of responsibility that comes with being a Maiden and lets her obtain the freedom thatâs so important to her character.
Once she returns, seeing this grief that her actions caused, particularly to Ruby, will get her to realize more that her actions can have serious repercussions. She made a choice, but that choice hurt the people she loves. She must have known that it would but Iâm not sure she ever realized just how much.
I didnât want this post to be heavy in the shipping department, so I largely left it out, but I am going to say this one thing that could have an impact. If Nuts & Dolts is on its way to being canon, which this volume makes it feel highly likely, this could be a catalyst.
It could prompt an arc for the both of them in which Penny learns to live her life fighting for her loved ones, rather than sacrificing it for them. A relationship could potentially start from there. And Ruby seeing Penny learn these things may also help her to stop doing the occasional but very dangerous and reckless things she does. Ruby witnessing Penny coming to terms with what she did to the people that care about her would actually make her stop to think âwait, is this how everyone else would feel if I got myself killed?â That would be a very important moment of character growth for her.
Iâm certain there are other significant things that Penny returning can bring to the show. And there are definitely more sections I could add to this. At this point though, assuming anyone even made it this far, I think Iâve been going long enough already. So letâs just roll into the outro!
As painful and hopeless as it seems, I'm choosing to trust them with this because there is absolutely no way they didn't see backlash coming. The way this finale went makes me think that they calculated for backlash and arenât jumping into something they donât have a plan to recover from. Whether this trust is unfounded or not remains to be seen, but I donât think it is currently. I do think, however, that the cause of this backlash was a major misstep. Now that it has happened though, they have a chance to do something good with it.
I know for a lot of you, trust in CRWBY has been damaged, some even irreparably so. And for those that feel this way, I donât blame you. My trust in them took a hit too, but isnât broken completely yet. There are many ways that they can bring her back that would make sense with the narrative, they have the ability to make it right, and after going over all of the hints and general weirdness of things many times, I think they will.
I'm feeling pretty confident now and I really didn't expect that to happen at all to be honest. But discussing and theorizing with the discord server seriously helped get my hopes back up surprisingly fast! Itâs actually thanks to all of them that this gigantic post even happened! Ive only followed u for a little while so apologies if u've already said this but do u have any opinions on gerry and goth culture etc, like how it ties into their narrative? And do u have any goth bands u like or that u think gerry would listen to
For me i feel a little weird when people put gerry with emo stuff / dont know that goth is a music based subculture, that might come from growing up around goth elitists though haha
i MIGHT have mentioned it somewhere but i honestly also forget so letâs just speedrun it again aaaand this is not a speedrun oh no okay.
my general philosophy with gerry + subcultures is based in the fact that the only Anything that got a name put to it in canon was his mastodon t-shirt in 2002? lots of music gets called âdeath metalâ when you donât listen to it (or are, for example, perpetually falling and have no idea where you are and are also a theater nerd who probably doesnât give a rip about that distinction anyway) and i have a hard time buying that leitner could properly identify someoneâs specific subculture just based on their style. everybody who wears a lot of black is An Goth to old people who donât know what any of the words mean.
so while i definitely do think goth obviously does work for his style and taste, i personally write him with a hefty serving of punk in there too, and music wise there are any number of possibilities. aster said once âfor all we know he could be a metalhead,â and i think thereâs some truth to that!
most of the times gerry has been described by other people, theyâve missed, assumed, or subtly misidentified something about him! itâs actually an interesting part of his character i really like a lot, because it gives some extra weight to the person heâs revealed to be when we finally get to hear him speak.
thereâs a lot of room for interpretation basically is all iâm saying! and iâve seen some really cool takes on it that i donât really go with myself (there are just so MANY), but i see where they came from.
i personally donât, like. go with the heavy goth makeup for him or have his clothes get very complicated because it feels like he doesnât really have the time for that. for my gerry, punk is more where itâs at (DIY jackets and stuff, uses lace code on his boots, etc) but he does wear Almost Exclusively Black while doing it, sure. to each their own! not saying my wayâs the only way or anything.
but i DO 100% agree with you that the emo music does not feel right dkfjhdj. please.
hard NO on the MCR, the joke is tired and i'm tired. aster said wisely, âheâs not a fan, itâs just something people play around him he nods his head toâ and i agree Yep. he probably is like that about a Few of the bands that people throw on him here. not a bad sound! but he doesnât know the song names or give a shit about the band, and heâs not going to remember to google it.
the guy was born in the â80s heâs got like. a little different of a music pool to splash around in than some of us really pay any attention to. itâs not bad music i just really donât see him getting into the stuff thatâs more well known around (american) teenagers-20somethings TODAY when heâd have found the stuff he liked way beforehand and fell down whatever pipelines came from it through that.
i think âif it hurts your head he probably loves itâ, but also i think the general tone of it matters to him yâknow like i donât think he wants the sad dreary stuff ALL the time! i think he wants passion and Refusal and fight and the sometimes-paradoxical brightness you CAN find in the lyrics of some of the harsher sounding stuff. lover of contradiction. lover of also just annoying the shit out of people around him who he thinks wonât want to bother to understand. whatever music he likes into his 30s, i donât think itâd be the sort that puts a romance to suffering.
venting is all well and good and surely something heâs done but i think if i were going to make his music such a big baseline for how he kept himself together all this time, kept his identity in check and gave him something to get excited about (âiâll try to stick it out until X month next year because thatâs when Y band is gonna release a new album and i want to hear itâ â that stuff can actually save your fucking life sometimes, yâknow?) then i would personally lean more towards something with more hope in it. hope and fire.
a more narratively impacting HC i have is that whether he chooses to hunt it down or not, he IS aware of and knows the words to a lot of mainstream pop shit among other maybe-unexpected things just because he travels so much and surely spent time in places that had their own music playing and you canât always have headphones on when you go places. he has a wide array of useless knowledge and trivia and lyrics on hand just by pure osmosis.
i think Boredom, Curiosity, and Spite drive a lot of his littler habits and hobbies because my g-d what else is he doing. hanging out with friends? aha. ahahaaha. aaah ,,, :-I
(my) gerry likes all sorts of random ass international bands, too, because heâd have more exposure to THAT stuff, too, and also a reason to do some research just for fun. van canto is a german a capella metal band what the fuck thatâs so cool. harmaja is also good, theyâre finnish. i think if you put some SKĂLD on in front of him he WILL be choreographing a dramatic music video as he walks down the street to it. like, no, heâs not gonna download them but if he fell into a youtube autoplay rabbit hole while he got distracted with something else you know he would have like a solid weekend of being super into âsome random french folk group that based their whole schtick on norse mythology.â he would totally have obscure kicks like that every now and then even if he has something more stable to return to for comfort later!
heâd also just be fine listening to some rock bands when theyâre just On, etc, and there's probably stuff outside of A Set Genre he DOES enjoy because human beings arenât just one-dimensional âi only like this specific thing always forever and everything else sucksâ and i think heâs spoken enough in canon about his adherence to the notion that Everything Has A Grey Area that heâs not too pressed about it. heâs got his niche, totally! but heâs not completely boxing himself in, either. i think he probably has had Enough of feeling isolated and only exposed to one perspective that he actively seeks other experiences and tries to see what other people love about things heâs not immediately familiar with!
movies and television, too, for similar reasons! for something to DO when he's stuck in a hotel room or to have on as background noise when heâs restless, even if it strays out of favored genres. just. watch whateverâs on, or whatever he hasnât seen before. he can scroll IMDB in his own brain, can recognize actors from the most obscure single appearances on a show with 20 seasons that he half-watched 4 years ago. ridiculous. hilarious.
in general thatâs how i have him consume media BEYOND whatever music he uses to keep a tighter grasp on his identity, but i havenât gotten too specific with artists and bands in anything i've published yet because it just hasnât come up! the only band i've referenced by name in something iâd written before WAS the mastodon (i have a lot of feelings about how his attachment to the lifesblood EP in particular), but i tend to play it safe and use that as like a Starting Point if that makes sense?
other suggestions from my group chat were joy division, and like. as far as âoff brandâ bands go, he might like the killers well enough. i do think he'd like against me! because. punk rock, yeah, and also laura jane grace herself is just. somebody i think heâd really enjoy, from the perspective of also coming out as Gender later in life. sheâs so cool,,,
i could see symphonic metal being enjoyable to him. within temptation is so strange but heâd vibe with it, especially since they were popular overseas first. the Drama of it all. apocalyptica is fun, so is sonata arctica. probably enjoys seether in the same way of like âdigging it when itâs on, never bought an album himself, but DOES remember where he was the first time he heard Broken.â he knows the local scene in sweden. why is he singing along perfectly to this german song he doesnât even speak german.
also because it happened to come up in the GC iâm also gonna paste this here but it was generally agreed upon, too, that like. with his âmusic taste and Fashion taste not necessarily being the same umbrella i feel like heâd love the aesthetics of glam rock and hairspray punk even though it wasnât his favorite musically.â and heâd probably really love drawing people he's encountered with those aesthetics. i think heâs just appreciative of a lot of stuff out there even if it's not the CD he's gonna pop in to try and sleep to.
TL;DR - j summed it up pretty well just now with âi think gerry is a combo of âknows bands youâve never heard ofâ and âhas never learned the name of the very popular universally known band youâre telling him about even if he recognizes the song.â he likes the american idiot album but could not summon the name Green Day if you put a gun to his head.â and i just think thatâs beautiful.
aster just said the best thing, too, about how i said he tries to branch out on purpose:Â âit may be your first week in this country and maybe you dont speak the language but that cool girl with the leather jacket bought you an iced tea so all is right with the world. like it doesnt make ppl more likely to help him or anything but it makes very specific people more likely to i guess? sense of community even in transitâ
and j responded: âi think that fits well on the fact that punk and its adjacents are so community focused, so if anyone was going to give him experiences like that, being alone and having a stranger stand up for you in some little way before you both move on, it would probably be the alts around the world. just like his genres are all over the place, he wouldnât probably call himself goth but the attraction to alt and itâs media was basically nurture for him so he was always gonna land thereâ
thatâs the shit it comes down to!!!! matters way more to him than being an elitist about specific artists, i think.

Loki Season 1 Thoughts
Overall, I really liked this series. It has some issues without question, but I sincerely don't think it's the dumpster fire so many viewers on this site treat it as. Did it go how I expected? Not at all? Did I enjoy the heck out of it and look forward to it every Wednesday? Hell yeah!
Loki's Good Guy Personality
A big complaint many have had with it is how much Loki's demeanor has changed and how his emotional growth feels rushed or his personality is ooc. Truth is, he saw his entire future, saw what his angry, power hungry, I-work-alone persona would get him in the end, and it snapped him back to reality. He has always been shown to be quite emotional and craving attention and lacking in self assurance, it's just in the past movies he's masked it with violence and fake narcissism, and he's always been a secondary character so his perspective is rarely shown. But if you really pay attention it's obvious he isn't truly villainous; we all know that, it's largely why he has such a huge fan base.
Right after meeting Mobius, Loki got an infodump of his future, saw his parents both die, found out that free will means jack shit, and learned he's absolutely powerless in this realm. On top of that, this is 2012 Loki, fresh off of being under Thanos' control, suddenly being shown that the guy who controlled him is going to end up killing him. Frankly,, I think it all broke Loki. He was too shook up by it all and by the sheer helplessness he found himself in at the TVA that he let all his barriers down momentarily. Just long enough for him to open up to Mobius about his motivation and his lack of self confidence. And you know what I bet? Loki felt relieved after talking to Mobius. A weight was lifted, because he bore his heart to someone and wasn't rejected or laughed at or treated like a psycho. And after letting his walls down fully, Loki didn't feel the need to put all of them back up. He stayed guarded around other people, but he didn't need to pretend around Mobius. Mobius has seen under the mask, so Loki doesn't feel pressure to perform as an all knowing, all powerful God around Mobius. That freedom is life changing.
People who gravitate towards broken, pseudo-villain characters do so because we relate to their internal conflict, their mental illness, their need to fake it around everyone close to them. Their turmoil and depression and self destructive behavior are familiar and we see ourselves reflected in their actions. Now, when a person really truly let's their guard down, drops all their layers of facade, and embraces themself, they tend to change demeanor and even personality pretty drastically. It's jarring in real life, so of course when it happens to a fictional character who you usually relate to it is going to be jarring, maybe even more so because it feels like a change you yourself would never go through. I know this sounds bad and people might get at me for it, but...
I believe the issue here is that a large part of Loki's fan base doesn't want him to get better. They don't want him to move past his mental illness, to learn how to cope with anger and disappointment in healthier ways, to be happy. They like his damaged persona, they like the internal conflict. Maybe it's because they're still at that low place themself and feel like a relatable character is getting taken away from them, maybe it's because they don't understand how much being at peace with yourself can alter a person and to them it feels like he's been changed too much. To those of us mostly on the up and up from battling depression and mental illness, it's comforting to see Loki getting a chance to be genuinely happy and accepting of himself.
Sylki and Lokius
First things first, I'm not anti anything. Ship what you want, idc. Personally, I do not see the Sylki dynamic as romantic, but I get why people read it that way. I thought the series did a good job of showing unrequited love, namely Loki falling for Sylvie and Sylvie feeling zero romance towards him. This was aware of his attraction and in the end used it as a distraction so she could get the upper hand. The show played up the potential romance because we are viewing things from Loki's perspective and he's become smitten as a kitten. I do think in the long run they'll have a more sibling-like dynamic, one Loki realizes that you can feel extreme love and care for a person without it being romantic. I enjoyed how the show explored their relationship, though I do wish they hadn't had every character under the sun mention their moment on Lamentis-1 like it was some big deal to bond with someone you're about to die with.
I'm bitter towards the development of Lokius. It had a strong start in the beginning, and in ep 5 had some potential reignited, but then they had Mobius not know who Loki is at the end. I'm still hoping they're playing the long game with this ship and that it'll come to fruition partway through season 2. The chemistry is there, and Mobius knows Loki very intimately and isn't put off by his past. Loki also feels much more at ease around Mobius than he does around Sylvie. It's the comfort of a deep loving bond with Mobius verses the nervousness of a new crush that he feels for Sylvie.
I don't think Loki is quite aware of his feelings for Mobius, simply because it's based in friendship and mutual respect and isn't a hot and heavy lust. Plus, as soon as he was away from Mobius he was thrown into a near death experience with Sylvie and developed a surface crush during their heart to heart. Since Loki's still figuring out what genuine feelings are beyond anger and sadness, he sees the simplistic crush he has on Sylvie as love and the intimate bond he's been forming with Mobius as friendship. He doesn't understand his own feelings yet, but I think he'll figure it out next season. I mean, he was probably already rethinking his feelings for her after she kissed and betrayed him, mentally kicking himself for expecting her to not pull a Loki betrayal like he would've in the past.
The Time Variance Authority
I really like the concept of the TVA, the structure of it, the methods they use, the deeply fucked way they recruit employees, the cult like motto, shady Miss Minutes who is definitely playing her own long game, and the blind acceptance TVA agents have of the Time Keepers' will. It's all very well done... until your dig into the core, aka He Who Remains. They built up the idea that the Time Keepers created the TVA to prevent a multiverse war and that they created agents to enforce their will. Then the creating agents turned out to be fake, the Time Keepers were fake, I expected the reason for the TVA's existence to be fake to. It felt too simple to have it genuinely exist just to keep the multiverse in check. Why the anonymity, unless it's to keep from having agents target and prune versions of himself which.. songs like a decent solution. HWR made it sound as though the multiverse war was just a bunch of versions of himself screwing shit up, so why isn't the TVA's focus on eradicating every other variant of this guy? Sounds a lot easier and nicer than fucking with the free will of every other living being. So either Marvel made a bad call when choosing what HWR's motive was for creating the TVA, or he was lying about it all to cover up something sinister.
Overall Storyline
I'm fairly happy with the plot as a whole. There were some pacing issues and I think a few missed chances for deeper conversations between various characters. While I enjoyed the Loki variants, I honestly would've been happier seeing Tom playing most the variants (except Kid Loki and Classic Loki since they are clearly different age ranges). If there is supposed to be one sacred timeline, it seems off to me that Lokis would be allowed to vary so extremely without it causing a nexus event(an alligator, whose nexus wasn't that he's an animal who obviously can't do any magic much less command Thanos' army, but that he ate someone's cat) and not just in appearance but in life path (ie boastful Loki collected all the infinity stones but it wasn't till he had 6 that he caused a nexus event even though him gaining control of the Soul, Power, and Time stones should've each caused nexus events since on the sacred timeline he never interacts with those 3 and taking any one of them would've fucked up a lot of other timeline parts)
I love the display of Lokis raw power, and 2012 Loki coming to the realization that he's way more powerful than he ever thought. And it wasn't just Classic Loki who spent thousands of years alone honing his skills, 2012 Loki reversed time on a goddamn falling building! I also liked the small magic, the fireworks, the tablecloth blanket, Loki yanking Sylvie away from HWR with just magic.
As someone who is both bisexual and genderfluid, I would've really loved more concrete representation. The comment about there never being another female Loki hit me in the gut; it undermined the Easter egg "Sex: Fluid" on Loki's TVA file. With how big a deal Sylvie being female was made out to be throughout the season, I expected her gender to play a key role in taking down the head of the TVA, like it was foretold that only a female Loki could end it all or some shit.
I don't mind the idea of Loki finding love in a straight passing relationship. I don't even mind the selfcest all that much. It just feels so obvious to me that Sylvie is written as not having any romantic inclination towards Loki, while Mobius is clearly written as falling in love with someone he shouldn't and trying to maintain an heir of professionalism to keep from wrecking his bond with Loki. I really really hope they come through on season 2 and give Lokius the canon relationship and proper representation they deserve.
Mmkay I thinks that's all the thoughts I've got right now. If you've been feeling cheated or clowned by how things went this season, maybe my perspective of things can help ease your pain.

The Unkiss
TW: discussion of sexual assault
The purpose of this post is to explore how and why the Unkiss came to be, and speculate (poorly) on what purpose it may serve in the future. Read under the cut (thanks @esther-dot )
So, Iâm going to tell everyone right away that Iâm not a very big fan of the pre-existing theories surrounding the Unkiss. Specifically, I tend to disagree with the âhowâ. This is partly because I think all the explanations offered are too Freudian (*shudder*) and partly because Iâve had a similar instance myself so I tend to project (sue me).Â
THE HOW
First, letâs look at the pre-existing theories:Â
The Unkiss is actually a sexual fantasy that Sansa has confused with the real events that happened (exactly what Freud would say. Creepy fuck.)
Sansa invented the Unkiss to romanticize an otherwise traumatic event so she could cope with it better.Â
Is there any other theory Iâm missing? These are the ones I know.Â
Iâm going to jump straight to the second theory. The issue (for me) in this theory is that it sort of assumes that Sansa herself would consider that kiss âromanticâ or that it would somehow help her cope the BoB night.
He yanked her closer, and for a moment she thought he meant to kiss her. He was too strong to fight. She closed her eyes, wanting it to be over, but nothing happened. - Sansa VII ACOK
This is the moment. She is expecting a kiss, but wanting it to be over. Itâs very clear that the kiss would have been non-con. More importantly, it looks like Sansa herself would consider the kiss non-con.Â
Why on earth would Sansa invent a kiss she didnât want in the first place to make coping with an already traumatic event easier?Â
He kissed me and threatened to kill me, and made me sing him a song. - Sansa II ASOS
This is the first time we are introduced to the Unkiss, and it shows that Sansaâs memory of that night is perfectly intact. The Unkiss is an addition. It isnât replacing any other, more traumatic memory (like the threat to her life).Â
Now this is what I think happened:
Her emotions were running high that night, and her mind muddled up real events with the memory of that mounting (practically tangible) terror.Â
Yeah, itâs that simple. You know how you get really angry in a fight and then later you canât recall the exact the words? Memory is unreliable. There are plenty of studies to show the varied effects trauma has on memory. There are plenty of studies to show how easily memory can distort. There doesnât need to be a great, complex reason for Sansa to misremember a traumatic event. Also remember that Sansa may not be entirely sober for this encounter, since Cersei did make her chug that wine before.Â
Being stuck in a situation where youâre terrified and anticipating some sort of assault any second? Having a single moment where the emotions peak, where youâre sure the assault is going to happen right that moment? Misremembering if the assault did or didnât happen later? Yup. Been there, done that. I still donât remember what happened, and itâs been years. I sure as fuck wasnât romanticizing shit, so it never occurred to me to think that Sansa might be. So when I heard the theories I went back to her chapters and honestly, I donât think she is either. Not yet. Â
Then this happened:
She could still remember how it felt, when his cruel mouth pressed down on her own. He had come to Sansa in the darkness as green fire filled the sky. He took a song and a kiss, and left me nothing but a bloody cloak. - Alayne II AFFC
Now this is Sansa romanticizing the Unkiss. She romanticizes the kiss she remembers. That does not mean she invented the kiss to romanticize the BoB, it only means she remembers a non-con kiss from a traumatic night and chose to romanticize it to cope. See the difference?Â
The kiss isnât a way for her to romanticize her trauma to cope, she romanticizes the kiss that was a result of her trauma- to cope.Â
I wonât be so sure of this theory though, because (no offense) but GRRM does seem like the kind of guy who would read Freud and incorporate his ideas in his story. Thereâs already a shit load of incest and letâs admit it, Sansa canonically has daddy issues. How far or in-depth did GRRM think about the âhowâ of the Unkiss? We donât know.Â
THE WHY
Well, this one has been explained by GRRM himself:
You will see, in A STORM OF SWORDS and later volumes, that Sansa remembers the Hound kissing her the night he came to her bedroom... but if you look at the scene, he never does. That will eventually mean something, but just now it's a subtle touch, something most of the readers may not even pick up on. - GRRMÂ
He also said:
File this one under "unreliable narrator" and feel free to ponder its meaning...- GRRMÂ
So, itâs safe to say that the Unkiss is basically being used to establish that Sansa has an unreliable memory. Of course, other characters probably have unreliable memory too (for example: Arya misremembering the name of Joffreyâs sword) but this is still most likely about Sansa.Â
Sansa has always been considered an unreliable narrator by the GA anyway, since so much of her narration in the first book was at odds with the narration of Ned and Arya, who were both fan favourites at the time. This should probably indicate to the readers that the other characters are unreliable narrators as well, but it doesnât. People carry on reading simply assuming that only Sansaâs POV is unreliable, or at least the most unreliable. So using Sansaâs POV to lay the groundwork for memory issues in someone elseâs POV is...not gonna work.Â
This doesnât necessarily prove that the pay-off of the Unkiss is going to come from Sansaâs POV only, but it makes it seem likely. So Iâm going to restrict myself to looking at the possibilities of misremembering stuff from Sansaâs POV.Â
One more thing we need to look at before we start looking at future possibilities:
"It's not the same," Sansa said. "The Hound is Joffrey's sworn shield. Your butcher's boy attacked the prince." - Sansa III AGOT
On the surface, this looks like another memory edit. The situation is remarkably similar; it was a traumatic event for Sansa, she was not entirely sober when it happened, and now she is misremembering what happened. We know that Mycah did not attack Joffrey, Joffrey attacked Mycah. However, itâs not quite the same. For one, we donât actually know if Sansa believes that, or if sheâs just trying to be contrary to Arya.Â
Also-Â
"Sansa, come here." Ned had heard her version of the story the night Arya had vanished. He knew the truth. "Tell us what happened." - Eddard III AGOT
Sansa had told Ned what happened. But then she said-
She blinked at her sister, then at the young prince. "I don't know," she said tearfully, looking as though she wanted to bolt. "I don't remember. Everything happened so fast, I didn't see âŚ"- Eddard III AGOTÂ
So.......is she lying or did her memory actually get fuzzy afterwards? What exactly did she tell Ned? Considering that heâs the one who asks her to âtestifyâ, Iâd assume she told things as they really happened (as in Joffrey attacked Mycah). Did her memory of the events slowly fade...and then reverse (as in Mycah attacked Joffrey)? Or is she just taking the neutral stance here, and later the opposing stance (Joffreyâs side) in her fight with Arya? We donât know.Â
PURPOSE IT MAY SERVE GOING FORWARD
First, letâs assume that the Trident accident really does count as a memory edit. This would mean that Sansa has edited her memory twice now, which makes it very likely that a third memory edit is coming. There are two directions this can go-
The third memory edit has already happened pre-canon (so technically it would be the first edit)
The third memory edit is going to happen sometime in the next two books.
Warning: this is where I get back on my Jonsa bullshit. Turn back now if you donât wanna watch me make everything about Jonsa.
Pre-canon Jonsa crushÂ
If the first option is true, and Sansa has already edited her memory once that we donât yet know about, then a pre-canon crush/moment between her and Jon is...a pretty strong possibility.Â
Iâll admit, Iâm very very skeptical of the pre-canon crush, simply because I think there isnât enough evidence or foreshadowing for it. On the other hand, the groundwork has already been laid, if GRRM were to go in this direction..it would be believable. Shocking, but believable.Â
We have numerous mentions of kissing games in the godswoods. We have a pre-canon conversation between Sansa and Jon about How To Hit On Ladies. And much more. The possibility is there.Â
Sansa having a crush on Jon and being so traumatized she replaced Jon with Waymar Royce?? Sansa getting tipsy on watered down wine and giving Jon a blue rose-
There are other possibilities though, for example, a fight between Sansa and her father and/or Arya that sheâs not remembering correctly. It would explain her daddy issues (even more) and work to create conflict between her and Arya (why though). But I donât THINK thereâs any evidence for that..? I donât know Iâm just throwing out ideas.
Moving on to the second option- a third memory edit to come
These memory edits are not likely to be nearly as innocent.Â
One possibility Iâve heard about is Sansa forgetting her identity and sinking into Alayne. No. Very Unlikely. Sansaâs Stark identity appears to be going strong even in the TWOW preview chapter.
Second possibility- Sansa memory edits Lysaâs death.Â
She was mad and dangerous. She murdered her own lord husband, and would have murdered me if Petyr had not come along to save me.- Alayne I AFFCÂ
Itâs...possible? But it looks like she does remember what Lysa said and how she died. Sheâs just suppressing/dismissing the parts that implicate Littlefinger, which is not the same as a memory edit, where the memory is changed somehow.Â
More possibilities- Littlefinger will do something and that will lead to a memory edit. Sheâll flee from the Vale and run into Ramsay (I dearly hope not) and bam trauma -> memory edit. The possibilities are pretty much endless.Â
Now letâs assume that the incident on the Trident was not a memory edit. This means sheâs only had one memory edit yet....in which case the pay-off is probably something kiss-related, or it is something she remembers, but which didnât really happen. A pre-canon kiss, or some serious Freudian shit that Iâve been trying desperately to avoid, a Sansa-Sandor faceoff....yea Iâm not actually good at speculation.

Yue QingYuan Third Transmigrator
This isn't canontical but would be really funny headcanon is if Yue QingYuan is a third transmigrator.
After She Yuan transmigrates into Shen QingQiu, and starts acting weird the sect looks into it, but like in most fics? canon?, I've read to much I don't know what's real anymore, they think the new Shen QingQiu is pretty neat so they don't look into it very hard, and accept the easiest most plausible reasoning of the qi deviation made Shen QingQiu lose his memory or altered his personality.
Yue QingYuan knows that's wrong. He is Shen Jiu's canontical soulmate. He knows that when he looks at Shen QingQiu that he is an imposter, but there's nothing he can do, because everyone else is content to let the imposter replace the original. He has failed Shen Jiu for the last time, because this time his failure seems to have resulted in Shen Jiu's death, as he can't convince the other peak lords to bring the original back. Comments like, "I like this version better." And this breaks Yue QingYuan.
This all occurs during the time when after the Qi Deviation, at the beginning of the book, when Yue QingYuan just leaves and disappears until the first mission that he gives Shen Yuan. Where Shen Yuan starts calling him the quest giving NPC, and kind older brother archtype.
Because that is not how Yue QingYuan would act if Shen Jiu had just had a qi deviation bad enough to lose memories or alter personality. He would be glued to his side. But my headcanon reason he isn't and acts so differently is because it's no longer Yu Qi in that body by that point it's another transmigrator.
Yu Qi after realizing he has failed in the ultimate way allowing Shen Jiu's death qi deviates and dies following his soulmate into the reincarnation cycle. But just like Shen QingQiu where the story must go on a transmigrator gets thrown into Yue QingYuan's body and told to hold down the fort.
But unlike the other two transmigrators the one in Yue QingYuan's body has no idea what's going on. They at most interacted with PIDW by internet osmosis or maybe seeing a fan art or two, but other than that have no knowledge of the story.
So the system gives them a handicap. They get explanations of who characters are, and how Yue QingYuan would have interacted with them.
For example, This is Shen QingQiu you are childhood friends, you dote heavily on him, and will allow him to get away with anything like a particularly indulgent older brother. This is Lui Qingge you are friends. You respect him as a warrior and often practice duel together. You are Yue QingYuan a kind and fair man who is sectleader, and assign tasks to your sect members.
Though they hadn't interacted with PIDW the transmigrator did play enough video games to understand their role in a similar way that Shen Yuan looks at their role. A kind and benevolent npc that gives out quests and orders. Unlike Shen Yuan they don't have an OOC function that's why even though Yue QingYuan is a secondary protagonist, power wise, he always fades into the background, and never acts on character in the Shen Yuan version of PIDW.
For example Lui Qingge is always the one chasing after Shen Yuan, and trying to save him, or standing against Luo Binghe. Character wise shouldn't Yue QingYuan had been beside himself in grief after Shen QingQiu's death? A few Qi Deviations? Fighting with reckless abandon to get the body back? That's his soulmate's body, and his precious Xiao Jiu, so why is it always Liu Qingge?
Because it's not Yue QingYuan, it's a transmigrator playing a part with very limited information and pretty much only doing the tasks the system lays out for them to do, and otherwise running a simulator called "Keep the 12 Peaks Running and Prospering". That could even be why this transmigrator got chosen they died playing a simulator game like Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley and wanted to live something similar. The Yue QingYuan!transmigrator only shows up for the important story bits to read off their lines, enjoy the cutscenes, and go back to their simulator.
It would be very funny for a third transmigrator to be in the PIDW 2.0 right under Airplane's and Shen Yuan's noses but because they didn't know anything about PIDW they are the most successful at flying under the radar. It's be especially funny if they realize Airplane and Shen Yuan are transmigrators, but sees the utter mess they are making, and just decides to let them do their own thing.
If you wanted to out this character Airplane and Shen Yuan could be talking about something in English at a peak meeting, everyone thinks it's a regional dialect they share, trying to remember a fact or words to a song, and the Yue QingYuan transmigrator not paying attention gives them the answer in English, before having a shocked moment realizing they've just outed themselves.

Here are some of my rambling thoughts on Shameless 11x09. My only real issue with this episode is the way it ended. For some reason these episodes have been ending awkwardly. I feel like the episode isn't finished yet, but then it ends. Like, what the hell happened to Gemma and Amy? We never saw Kevin find his children! It's like whoever is in charge has never ended a show before and don't know where to stop.
I hate that Mickey was in pain and crying, But I did love that he was allowed to cry and grieve. He had a safe space and safe person he could cry in front of and go through all his crazy range of emotions with.
I loved that Ian gave Mickey the space he needed, brought him coffee, and kept Mickey's perspective of Terry in check. All the while still letting Mickey grieve and helping him through.
The scene with them going through Terry's stuff was a reminder of what Mickey said to Ian in season 7. Ian always had his back more than his family ever did.
Mickey is left to deal with Terry's arrangements and going through his stuff and all the Milkovich's are gone. Where was Sandy, where were the other Milkovich's who were actually living in the house with Terry? They wouldn't even take care of him when he was alive. Not a single one is there to help Mickey. Only Ian!
Ian was there through everything. Ian always has and always will have Mickey's back. I don't know what more proof people need to see how the Milkovich's just aren't close and Ian is the only one who was and will always be there for Mickey. I need no more proof of Ian's love for Mickey. Haven't needed it for a long time.
People wanted Mickey to be close with Sandy when she was introduced last season, but they hardly even interacted. How is it, that people like to point out how Mandy and Mickey weren't close, but actually believed Sandy and Mickey could be close?
I agree Mandy and Mickey aren't as close as we'd like them to be. Especially not as close as she was with Ian. But if Mickey was close to any of his relatives, it would've been Mandy. They grew up in the same house with the same father. Sandy didn't. She may have lived with them from time to time throughout the years, but it was not the same. Not to mention she was never even mentioned before, just like the rest of the Milkovich's that showed up this season.
I didn't expect it, but I thought this would be one of the last chances they had to at least mention Mandy. Maybe saying they talked to her and told her about Terry's death over the phone. Anything! But still not a single mention. Like the writers forgot she existed. Even when Mickey is reminiscing about dodge the dagger, he mentions his brothers. If someone was watching the show from season 7 on, they'd never even know he had a sister.
When Mickey described the nun as "A cold blooded killer in a nun costume. We don't actually know that yet." that made me laugh. Ian stopping him from ranting any further was hilarious!
I loved how @annatrow pointed out that Ian still thought Rachel could've married Terry after he killed her father because Ian would've, had Mickey done the same to Frank. Ian's like that's not a deal breaker for me and Mickey! đđ¤Łđđ¤Ł
Omg the knife scene at the funeral home! When that guy was behind them and they get all awkward and Ian tells Mickey to put the knife away! I laughed so hard at that! That was fucking hilarious! These two are so embarrassing, you can't take them anywhere! đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł
Another time that Ian took charge for Mickey. Like finding Terry a nurse, he was talking to the guy at the funeral home about Terry's wishes and asking what the most affordable package they had. I love that Ian takes charge for Mickey like that, even when it's for Terry and Ian could care less about the man. Ian knows, seen, and has been a victim of Terry's. He even knows about Mandy's rape by Terry. I don't even think Mickey ever found out about Terry raping Mandy. Only Ian, Lip, Mandy, and Terry knew about it. Wonder if that would've changed the way Mickey grieved Terry? The love of Ian's life has suffered so much because of Terry. Ian has every reason to hate this man. It continues to amaze me how he still keeps helping take care of Terry and makes arrangements for him because he knows that's what Mickey wants and needs right now.
THEY SANG AGAIN!!!! I know some people find it odd. But it was a final fuck you to Terry. Ian even said I know what Terry would love. Obviously he was being sarcastic because he knows Terry would hate that. Maybe if it hadn't been right after they just sang in the bathroom, it wouldn't have seemed so odd to people. Maybe if it had been more spread out from the last time they sang. But I do love that it's canon that they sing together pretty often now! They're free and happier than they've ever been before. Who is to say that it's ooc for them now that they can be themselves and their happy for the first time in their lives.
The song Ian picked?! Fucking perfect! It was Mickey's life story in that song! And the fact that Ian picked that song shows how Ian really sees Mickey. As a survivor who has been through so much, tormented by a father who wanted to knock him down, but Mickey persevered. He sees Mickey for who he really is and how much he's gone through in a way that no one ever has or ever will.
Mickey deserves that. He deserves Ian and vice versa really. They deserve each other and in moments like these I'm so freaking happy they have each other for the rest of their lives. When Ian lost his mom, he was alone in his grief and that broke my heart. Not anymore!
Okay, and the whole time they're at the cemetery, I was watching that guy behind them. I was thinking, Ummm are you going to do this with that guy right there?! I'm sure he's gonna notice the fire behind him! đ¤Łđ¤Ł
I didn't notice until a GIF was made about Mickey touching Ian's butt at the cemetery! When re watching, I realized Mickey wasn't holding Ian until the guy yelled at them. I don't know why that made it so much funnier to me, but it really did! The guy yells at them, Mickey grabs Ian's butt in response and then they run off. That's fucking hilarious!!! Love the parallel from them running off after Mickey punched Ned in season 3. Even laughing when they ran away at the cemetery! I wish we could've seen them laughing and running away in this one instead of just hearing them laughing.
When discussing this episode with @luckyshazmrsmonaghansblog we spoke of how everyone seems to be more stupid this season, especially Lip in my opinion. When watching season 8 & 9, I forgot that Lip was supposed to be the genius of the family! I literally forgot! There were easy words that I knew, that he would ask what that meant. And I was like what? How does he, the genius, not know what that means? Even I know what that means! Not to mention remodeling a house he didn't own this season! The writers have really dumbed everyone down. Probably for comedy sake but it's just frustrating.
Other character points:
⢠Debbie had the nerve to ask Liam if he wanted to ask her what she was doing, after she told him she didn't have time for his shit when he had real concerns about being homeless. She won't listen to him but she expects him to listen to her. Then she tells Lip about Liam's fear! Meaning she knew what was bothering him and she never tried to console him or talk to the others about it.
⢠I did find it weird that Lip said he and Tami talked about it and wanted Liam to come live with them. I thought when did they have time to have that conversation? Lip didn't even know that Liam was worried about that until Debbie told him. Then I saw a few posts about people even doubting that that conversation even happened and I now feel like that is a real possibility. Lip has spent this whole season lying to Tami and keeping things from her. So, it's not far fetched to think he didn't talk to her about it. If they did, why not talk to Liam about that sooner? Also doubt Tami would be okay with it. Though Liam is just a kid, she never cared for the Gallagher's and only cares when it's her own family that needs something. Like wanting the Gallagher's to chip in on her sisters medical bill. I'm never gonna get over that! I know she was scared but what the hell was that?! You know she wouldn't do the same for the Gallagher's. She's the kind who only cares about her side of the family and not her significant others family.
⢠I know they're going to sell the house and I would normally be okay with that. But I hate that Lip is making the decision for everyone. He doesn't live in the house, it's not even under his name, Carl paid for the house when they almost lost it, and the rest of the Gallagher's have been paying the bills while he's been out of the house. Lip is not the all mighty one in charge of the house or their lives. He makes me not want them to move out of the house only so he doesn't get his way. Especially after he tells everyone they're not talking about it anymore and he starts tearing down walls to a house his siblings and niece are still living in and when he doesn't even live there anymore. Fucker needs to not get his way every once in a while.
⢠Vee keeps telling her mom, she's not going to last in Kentucky and she'll be back in a few months. That's a sure fire way to make sure her mom never moves back to Chicago. Could just be me, but when someone says shit like that to me, it makes me want to prove them wrong even more!
⢠I'm not usually a fan of Frank, but I did like seeing him with Serena. It showed a rare moment of his humanity, hugging her and even putting on his mask before doing so. I thought that was thoughtful of him.

How 9/11 Became Fan Fiction Canon
Every fictional character you can think of has experienced 9/11 in fanfiction.
A Clone Wars veteran with two lightsabers is on United Airlines Flight 93 and prevents it from crashing. Ron and Hermione get caught up in the chaos as the towers fall. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and her friends watch the attacks unfold on TV from Sunnydale. We have spent 20 years trying to process what happened on 9/11 and its fallout, and that messy process can be tracked through the countless, sad, disturbing, and sometimes very funny fanfiction left across the internet.
Many of the fanfics written in the weeks and months following the 9/11 attacks seemed to directly respond to the news as it happened, processing the tragedy in real-time through the eyes of characters they loved. In the absence of a canon episode where Daria Morgendorffer paid respects to those lost, writing fanfic about these characters also experiencing trauma helped fans cope.
One YuGiOh fanfic published on fanfiction.net in May 2002 could have been ripped exactly from what this writer experienced that Tuesday morning. âIt started as a normal day,â user Gijinka Renamon wrote. Yugi and his friends were in school, where their teacher informed them of the attacks and sent everyone home from school.
âAfter reading peopleâs 9/11 fics, I decided to write my own, and put a certain character in it. And Yugi and his pals were my first choice,â the author's note reads, explaining the connection they felt to United flight 93 and the World Trade Center attacks. Given that they lived in Pennsylvania, and âitâs close to New York, I felt really sad about it.â
Stitch, a fandom journalist for Teen Vogue, told Motherboard that this reaction to 9/11 is not at all uncommon in fandom.
"Fandom has always been a place that positions nothing as 'off limits,'" she said. "Historical tragedies like the Titanic sinking and atrocities like⌠all of World War 2 show up regularly across the past 30 years of people creating stories and art about the characters they love. So, on some level, it makes sense that 9/11 and the following 20-year military installation in the Middle East has joined the ranks of things people in different fandoms turn into settings for their fan fiction."
Reactions depicted in a handful of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanfics published in the weeks after the attacks ring a little truer to the characters. âTuesday, 11th September 2001,â written by Anna K, almost echoes the lyrics from âIâve Got a Theory,â one of the songs in the musical episode that aired in November 2001. âWe have seen the apocalypse. We have prevented it. Actually, weâve prevented quite a few. So we know what they look like,â they write, before taking a darker turn. âThey look a lot likeâŚNew York today.â
Killing demons and vampires doesnât phase the Scooby Gang, but when preventable human death is brought into the picture, itâs gut wrenching.
âWhat am I supposed to doâŚWhen I canât do anything to save the world?â Buffy cries into Spikeâs chest, watching the attacks unfold on TV in a fanfic the author described as being âabout feeling numb and helpless.â
In âBlood Drive,â Kirayoshi writes about Buffy and her friends saving a van full of donated blood meant for victims of the attacks from a group of thirsty vampires. One Buffy the Vampire Slayer fic even takes a blindly patriotic turn, where noted lesbian witch Tara McClay helps Xander hang an American flag from the window of the magic shop to make Anya feel better.
Experiencing 9/11 as a young teenager was overwhelming not just because of the loss of life. Almost immediately after the event itself, it was as if the entirety of American culture re-oriented itself towards an overtly jingoistic stance. As we get distance from the attacks, seeing the tone of television and movies from the early 2000s is jarring, and some have gone viral on Twitter. In the world of pop music, mainstream musicians like the Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, were blacklisted from the radio while Toby Keith sang about putting a boot up the ass of terrorists. On the Disney Channel, a young Shia Labeouf reading a poem he supposedly wrote about the events. The poem concludes with the line, "it's awesome to be an American citizen."
In a world so completely saturated with this messaging, it is not surprising that fanfic authors started including 9/11 in their work so soon after the event. Even The West Wing had a strange, out of continuity, fanfic-esque episode where the characters reacted to 9/11. In some cases, it made sense that the characters in the stories would be close to or a part of the events themselves.
"For characters like John Watson or Captain America, the idea works to an extent," Stitch told Motherboard. "In the original Sherlock Holmes works and the 2011 BBC series, Watson had just returned from Afghanistan. For Captain America and other Marvel heroes, 9/11 was something that was addressed in-universe in The Amazing Spider-Man volume 2 #36. Technically, 9/11 is 'canon' to the Marvel universe."
In âEarly Warning: Terrorism,â a fanfiction for the TV show Early Edition in which a man who mysteriously receives tomorrow's newspaper, predicting the future, avoids jingoism, but tries to precent 9/11 from happening. This fanfic remains unfinished; itâs unclear if the characters successfully prevent 9/11 in this retelling.
Largely in fanfic from the era just after 9/11, when many young authors were trying to emotionally grapple with it, the characters don't re-write or undo the events themselves. It's this emphasis on the reaction to tragedy that colors the fanfiction that features 9/11 going forward.
Although fanfiction authors have been writing about 9/11 consistently since soon after the event, whenever that fanfiction reaches outside of its intended audience, it looks bizarre.
A screenshot of a Naruto 9/11 fanfic on the Tumblr subreddit comes without any context, or even more than two lines and an author's note. Itâs impossible to suss out if this falls into the category of sincere fanfic without the rest of the piece or a publication date, but modern-day commenters on the Reddit thread see it as classic Tumblr trash.
Screenshot from r/Tumblr
âBin Laden/Dick Cheney, enemies to lovers, 10k words, slow burn,â one user joked in the replies, underscoring the weirdness of Naruto being in the Twin Towers by comparing it to a What If story about Cheney and Bin Laden slowly falling deeply in love.
Itâs hard to tell how much of the 9/11 fanfic and fanart starting a few years after the attacks is sincere, and how much of it is ironic, and trying to make fun of the very concept of writing fanfiction about 9/11.
A 2007 anime music video (in which various clips, usually from anime, are cut together to music) that combines scenes from The Lion King with Linkin Parkâs âCrawlingâ and clips from George Bushâs speeches immediately after the attacks feels like the perfect example of this. Even the commenters canât seem to suss out if this person is a troll or not.
Thereâs no way that My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic 9/11 fanart could be serious, right? Especially if the description pays tribute to âsome of the nation's most memorable buildings,â and features five of the main characters as child versions of themselves. The comments again are split between users thanking the artist for a thoughtful remembrance post, and people making their own headcanon for why Twilight Sparkle is surreptitiously absent from the scene.
Screengrab via DeviantArt
Thereâs Phineas and Ferb fanfic that combines a 9/11 tribute concert with flashbacks to Ferb being rescued from the towers as a baby, written on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. It jumps from introspection to lines like, ââQuiet Perry the Platypus. Iâm trying to listen to these kids singing a 9/11 tribute.ââ
The author's notes make it more likely that they meant for this to be a tribute piece, but it doesnât quite make sense until watching a YouTube dramatic reading of it from 2020, fully embracing the absurdity of it all.
âFor me, 9/11 is synonymous with war. It completely changed the course of my life," Dreadnought, the author of a Captain America fanfic Baghdad Waltz that sees Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes fall in love over the course of the war on terror, told Motherboard. "Itâs the reason I joined the military, and I developed deep connections with people who would go on to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq. These very much felt like my generationâs wars, perhaps because people I graduated high school with were the youngest folks eligible to serve at the time.â
Dreadnought told Motherboard that although they didn't deploy, their career has kept 9/11 and the trauma from it in their mind. After seeing that people who fantasize about Steve and Bucky getting together seemed particularly interested in reading fanfiction that related to 9/11, they decided to try their hand at it.
"I had to do something with all of that emotionally, and Iâm admittedly a bit emotionally avoidant. So I learned through fic that itâs easier for me to process those feelings and the knowledge of all the awful stuff that can happen in war if I can turn it into something creative," Dreadnought said. "Give the feelings to fake people and then have those fake people give the feelings to readers!"
To Dreadnought, who is a queer man, the experience of researching and writing this was more cathartic than they first expected, especially as a way to navigate feelings about masculinity, military culture, and queer identity. But they said the research they did, which included watching footage of first responders at ground zero, was what helped them finally process the event itself.
"It was like a delayed horror, and it was more powerful than I expected it would be." Dreadnought said. "When I was eighteen, I was pretty emotionally divorced from 9/11; I just knew I wanted to do something about it. So coming back to it in my 30s while writing this fic, it was a very different experience. Even the research for this story ended up being an extraordinarily valuable exercise in cognitively and emotionally processing 9/11 and all of its second and third order effects."
Fanfiction that features 9/11 provides an outlet for people who still grapple with the trauma from that day. But Stitch warns that the dynamics of fandom and how it relates to politics can also create fiction that's less respectful and more grotesque.
"With years of distance between the stories written and the original events of 9/11, there seems to be some sort of cushion for fans who choose to use those events as a catalyst for relationshipsâand Iraq and Afghanistan for settings," Stitch said. "The cushion allows them room to fictionalize real world events that changed the shape of the world as we know it, but it also insulates them from having to think about what they may be putting into the world."
The tendency of turning these events into settings or backgrounds for mostly white, male characters to fall in love has the unintended effect of displacing the effects that the war on terror has had on the world over. Steve and Bucky might fall in love during the war on terror, but they would also be acting as a part of the American military in a war that has been criticized since it started. Fanfic writers in other fandoms have come under fire for using real world tragedy as settings for fic before. In the aftermath of the 2010 Haiti earthquake Supernatural fanfiction about the actors Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki going to the island to do aid became controversial within the fandom. There have also been fics where characters grapple with the death of George Floyd that is written in a way that displaces the event from the broader cultural context of race in America.
"A Captain America story where Steve Rogers is a 'regular' man who joins the US Army and 'fights for our freedom' post-9/11 is unlikely to deal with the warâs effect on locals who are subject to US military intervention," Stitch said. "Itâs unlikely to sit with what Captain America has always meant and what a writer is doing by dropping Steve Rogers into a then-ongoing conflict in any capacity."
After enough time, ânever forgetâ can even morph into âbut what if it never happened?â A 19k+ word Star Wars alternate universe fanfic asks this question, wondering what would have unfolded if someone with two lightsabers was on United Flight 93. This fic, part of a larger fanfic series with its own Wikia, considers what would have happened if Earth was a military front in the Clone Wars.
In this version of events, a decorated general who served in the Clone Wars is able to take back control of Flight 93 before it crashes, landing safely and preventing even more tragedy from happening that day. In the end, all of the passengers who made harrowing last calls to their loved ones before perishing in a Pennsylvania field survive thanks to the power of the Force, and are awarded medals of honor by President Bush.
Twenty years after the attacks, itâs painful to think about what would have happened if people got to work 15 minutes later, or missed their trains that morning. There werenât Jedi masters deployed to save people in real life, but for some of the fanfic writers working today, the world of Star Wars might feel just as removed as the world before September 11, 2001.
Fiction serves as a powerful playground for processing cultural events, especially generational trauma. The act isn't neutral though; a decade's worth of fanfiction that takes place on or around 9/11 shows how our own understanding of a traumatic event can shift with time.

Tyrant Terror
So I know itâs no surprise to my closest friends and fellow Disney fans on Tumblr that I have a strong, deep affinity for villains, including those by Disney. And over the last several months, the more I wrote about King Runeard in my Frozen II analyses, the more I realized what made him a tyrant, albeit a secret one, and that led me to think about other villains in the Disney animated canon who were tyrants.
The thing is, while most historical tyrants were people of royalty, you donât necessarily have to be a monarch in order to be a tyrant. The definition of a tyrant isnât limited to being a KING or QUEEN who is openly cruel, hostile, harsh, uncaring, oppressive, persecuting, and unjust towards the people they rule. I mean, that is one way to express tyranny, and probably the most famous way it is and has been done. But what it really means for a person to be called a tyrant is being in a position of power, authority, and/or control over other people and MISUSING, to the point of ABUSING, that position, and often for that tyrant's own selfish desires rather than in the best interest of the people being ruled by the tyrant.
So from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Frozen II, there are a handful of tyrannical antagonists who are indeed monarchs, such as the Queen of Hearts, Prince John, and Scar, but also plenty others who are not. There are tyrants who are corrupt government officials, such as Governor Ratcliffe, Frollo, and Bellwether, and even those who wield magic, such as Maleficent, Ursula, and Jafar. And like the villainous monarchs, the non-monarch villains prove themselves as tyrants all because they abuse their positions of power, magic or non-magic power, and authority that they have over other characters. In fact, there are even a couple of heroic characters who start off more as protagonist villains because they display tyrannical behavior before they become better people. On the contrary, the main antagonist enemies of these tyrant heroes serve as darker reflections of what the latter characters could have become had they not learned the error of their ways.
Below is my list of all the villains from Walt Disney Animation Studios that I perceive as tyrants, from monarchs to government officials to sorcerers, and what scenes in their respective movies depict them displaying tyrannical behavior. I even listed villains that would have become tyrants had they succeeded in their longterm goals.
Monarchs
The Evil Queen: Though we never see her actively governing her kingdom on screen, the abuse that the evil queen displays in her authority over Snow White by dressing her stepdaughter in rags and forcing her to work as a maid in an attempt to make her (Snow White) unattractive makes her a tyrant for sure. Furthermore, the way she mocks the skeletal remains of a prisoner in her dungeon suggests the queen is indeed a cruel, tyrannical ruler.
Queen of Hearts: If we want to consider the epitome of a true tyrant that is a monarch from Disney, it can be safely assumed that that role belongs to the Queen of Hearts. While every resident of Wonderland is insane in some way, the Queen is the most dangerous one of all by being the ruler of the land. An egotist extraordinaire, she loves to get her way, insisting that âAll ways are MY ways!â and enjoys hearing the words âYes, Your Majestyâ. The Queen outwardly abuses her authority and power over her subjects by becoming furious over even the smallest of matters, during which she loses her literally explosive temper and flies into violent rages. She is also extremely irrational and unjust in making decisions, primarily by utilizing executions as her only and immediate solution to any problem, especially whenever she feels someone has wronged her, while also refusing to let the individuals she wants beheaded explain their sides of the stories. Enraged upon seeing her white roses painted red, when she misses a shot in croquet, and when she becomes the target of a prank caused by the Cheshire Cat, the Queen sentences those she deems responsible to death by beheading. All of this proves just how much she persecutes and oppresses the residents of Wonderland, instilling only fear and intimidation into their hearts. (A pun that is VERY much intended by me, the Queen of Puns! đđđ)
Prince John: While possessing a short temper that isnât nearly as explosive and violent as that of the Queen of Hearts, Prince John is displayed to be extremely incompetent as the ruler of England during the time that King Richard is off fighting in the Crusades. Stingy and greedy, the prince continually finds ways to rob and swindle his people in pursuit of wealth for himself. John shows absolutely no care that the harsh laws he decrees to gain more money drive the citizens of Nottingham into poverty and starvation, and he even cruelly mocks them on their poor states by saying, âRob the poor to feed the rich!â. After the villagers start making fun of him with the song âThe Phony King of Englandâ, John punishes them by further increasing the tax payments. Soon everyone in Nottingham is stripped of their money and they are put in prison due to their inability to pay their taxes.
Horned King: Even though the Queen of Hearts projects herself as the ideal example of a royal tyrant, she is far less evil and scary than the Horned King. AÂ skeletal creature with green, rotting flesh, the Horned King is completely frightening in appearance and in personality. Malicious, cruel, malevolent, sinister, power-hungry, megalomaniacal, ruthless, and merciless, he is the epitome of a tyrant who is nothing but purely and completely evil. His goal is to find the infamous Black Cauldron and use its powers to unleash an army of immortal warriors called the Cauldron Born in order to become immortal and conquer the world.
Scar: Denied a legitimate chance to succeed Mufasa as the King of the Pride Lands once Simba is born, Scar schemes to have both of them killed to become king. After murdering Mufasa and believing that Simba has been killed as well, Scar ascends to the throne. However, because he allows the hyenas unrestricted hunting rights in the Pride Lands, their overeating leads to a shortage of food, and a drought leads to other animal herds moving away. Ultimately, these events turn the kingdom into a barren wasteland under Scarâs reign, leaving it completely devoid of green vegetation, water, and food sources. Incredibly lazy and incompetent as a ruler, and caring about nothing except the power and authority that being king gives him, Scar refuses to accept that his allowance of the hyenas overeating is what leads to the destruction of the Pride Lands. He instead blames it on Sarabi and the other lionesses since the hyenas complained to him that they refuse to go hunt. When she suggests they leave Pride Rock to survive, Scar obstinately rejects the idea, not at all caring that he has essentially sentenced them to death. He argues that his place as king puts him in the right for whatever he decides to do:Â âI am the king! I can do whatever I want!â
King Runeard: In his life, Runeard openly presented himself as a peaceful, generous leader to the people of Arendelle AND the Northuldra. But Elsa discovers from his snowy manifestation in Ahtohallan that he did not trust the Northuldra just because they followed magic. Despite his kingdom having seen him as a benevolent ruler, the face the figure of Runeard makes as he sneers "of a king!" implies that only really cared about himself as well the power and authority he had in being a king. Therefore, he secretly misused and abused it whenever the opportunity came along. This is displayed perfectly when Runeard had the dam constructed in the Enchanted Forest, presenting it as a gift to the Northuldra. He claimed that it would strengthen their land, but admitted only to the second-in-command that the damâs effects would be just the opposite. This was all part of Runeardâs subtle plan to destroy the Northuldra, as he feared they would try to usurp him and take over Arendelle using their magical ties.
Government Officials/Authority Figures
Lady Tremaine: Like the evil queen before her, Lady Tremaine has control and authority over Cinderella once the latterâs father dies, and misuses it by turning Cinderella into her servant. Day after day for ten years, Lady Tremaine orders and bosses Cinderella around, forces her to do every single bit of housework and menial task for her and the formerâs daughters, and subjects the poor girl to an endless cycle of abuse and torment. When Cinderella is accused by Anastasia of putting Gus under the latterâs teacup, her stepmother refuses to let her explain the truth and unfairly punishes her with extra chores. Later, Lady Tremaine falsely promises Cinderella she may attend the ball if she finds a suitable dress and finishes her chores, but gives her chore after chore to do to keep her from working on her dress. After Cinderella appears wearing the dress her mouse and bird friends fixed up for her, Lady Tremaine subtly and cruelly manipulates Drizella and Anastasia into destroying it so that she can appear to be fair in her side of the bargain (âIf you can find something suitable to wearâ) while simultaneously keeping Cinderella from going to the ball in the first place. The following morning, when she realizes Cinderella was the mysterious girl who danced with the prince at the ball, Lady Tremaine follows her stepdaughter up to her room and locks her in to prevent her from trying on the glass slipper when the Duke arrives with it.
Sheriff of Nottingham: Despite not being the main antagonist of Robin Hood, the Sheriff of Nottingham is as much of a tyrant over the town as Prince John is to it and the entirety of England. This is because he is abusive, ruthless, and completely unsympathetic towards the peopleâs poverty and continually demands that they pay their taxes, regardless of what other problems they may have that hinders them from doing so. It is because of the Sheriffâs harsh decree of taxes, and then by that of Prince John once the latter takes up residence in Nottingham, that the townâs citizens are driven into poverty. The cruel, immoral way the Sheriff collects taxes includes forcing out the coins Otto had hidden in his leg cast, not caring that his act was causing the blacksmith pain from his broken leg, confiscating the one farthing Skippy had been given for his birthday and insincerely wishing him a happy birthday, and taking the single farthing that was in the Friar Tuckâs church's poor box and laughing as he did it.
Ratigan: A notorious crime lord, Ratigan is the leader of a gang of thugs comprised primarily of mice, but also including a bat named Fidget, who is his second-in-command. Although they willingly help their boss with his crimes, they also participate out of fear for their own lives. Ratigan is an abusive tyrant to his minions and threatens to feed them to his cat Felicia if they ever do something that angers him, even if it occurs unintentionally. This is shown after one of his drunken thugs calls him a rat during "The Worldâs Greatest Criminal Mindâ, and Ratigan threatens his other minions with the same fate if they do not keep singing. Ratiganâs latest scheme is to take over London by murdering the Mouse Queen during her Diamond Jubilee celebration and secretly replacing her with a lifelike robot. He and his thugs (who are disguised as royal guards) infiltrate Buckingham Palace and kidnap the Queen, who is taken to be fed to Felicia by Fidget. As the Diamond Jubilee takes place, the Robot Queen names Ratigan as her new "Royal Consort", and Ratigan, dressed in an ornate robe, immediately presents himself in front of the gathered citizens of Mousedom, terrifying them. He then proceeds to read over his long list of tyrannical laws, one of which is a heavy tax policy for people he deems "parasites", including the elderly, infirm, and children.
Governor Ratcliffe: A completely unscrupulous and greedy man, Ratcliffe leads John Smith and other sailors on an expedition to Virginia to find gold, but he secretly plans to keep all discovered riches for himself. Upon their arrival to America, he forces all of the settlers to dig around their encampment, but refuses to do any manual labor himself out of his own sheer laziness. When no gold turns up in the searches, Ratcliffe becomes greedily convinced that it is because the Native Americans are hoarding it. He refuses to believe John's claim that there is no gold around the land, claiming that the Powhatansâ land is his land for the taking and that he makes the laws. After John is captured by the Powhatans, as they believed he murdered Kocoum, Ratcliffe takes it as the opportunity to take the non-existent gold from them, but claiming to his men that it is a rescue mission.
Judge Claude Frollo: Perhaps the darkest and most malevolent of all Disney Villains in animation (aside from the Horned King), Frollo uses his position as the Minister of Justice in the city of Paris to enrich himself and persecute anyone and everyone he considers inferior. He especially holds a deep-seated hatred for the gypsies and plots to eradicate them from the city. Despite his dark deeds, Frollo refuses to find any fault within himself and he truly believes he is a good person who is only trying to rid the world of sin and malice. Any time he commits a crime or is about to do one, he makes excuses to justify them, saying he is doing it in the eyes of God and that his victims are the ones who are really at fault. After chasing and murdering Quasimodoâs mother since he believed that the bundle she was carrying was stolen goods, Frollo attempts to murder Quasimodo since he believes the latterâs deformity makes him an unholy demon. Years later, after trapping Esmeralda in Notre Dame and upon discovering that she has escaped, he launches a ruthless manhunt around the city to find her, burning down the houses of anyone suspected of sheltering gypsies (including an innocent miller and his family, who survive thanks to Phoebusâs intervention) and interrogating gypsies who are captured. During the climax, Frollo makes the excuse that Esmeralda has proven herself to be a witch and will be executed by burned at the stake as her sentence.
Hades: The reluctant ruler of the Underworld and Lord of the Dead, Hades abuses his authoritative role by subjecting his lackeys Pain and Panic to harsh mistreatment whenever they fail a task assigned to them and any other time they do or say something that angers their boss. The two imps only put up with Hadesâs abuse not so much out of loyalty to him, but out of deep fear for him. When he discovers that the two did not succeed in killing Hercules as a baby, Hades furiously grabs both Pain and Panic by their necks and chokes them as he demands they explain themselves. Later, after Hercules becomes a famous hero in Thebes, Pain and Panic adorn themselves with some of the heroâs merchandise, much to their bossâs complete ire.
Shan Yu: The ruthless yet respected leader of the Hun army, Shan Yu is an extremely dark, merciless, and dangerous individual determined to take control of China. His thought-to-be impossible feat of getting through the Great Wall to invade China soon makes him notorious and feared throughout the entire country. In his journey to the Imperial City, Shan Yu and his army destroy one village, then slaughter the entire Imperial Army and residents in another village at the Tung Shao Pass in the mountains. He and five of his elite soldiers are the only ones who survive a snow avalanche caused by Mulan. When the group arrives at the Imperial City and take control of the palace, Shan Yu orders the Emperor to bow to him, and decides to kill him when the latter adamantly refuses to do so.
Turbo: Initially believed to be the ruler of the game Sugar Rush, King Candy is secretly Turbo, a racer from the old game TurboTime who was believed to have died after his game was permanently unplugged. Having stolen the throne from Vanellope Von Schweetz, the true ruler, Turbo turns her into a glitch and makes himself the ruler of her kingdom. While he is viewed as eccentric and flamboyant, yet jovial and benevolent, to his subjects, Turbo is extremely obsessive and possessive of his new royal status. He continuously lusts for power and authority and goes to great lengths to secretly abuse his position, not just by allowing the other racers to ruthlessly torment Vanellope, but especially by keeping Vanellope from racing so that she cannot regain the role he had stolen from her.
Bellwether: The epitome of the famous phrase âa wolf in sheepâs clothingâ, Dawn Bellwether pretends to be sweet, meek, and friendly to successfully hide her true prejudiced, ruthless, embittered nature. Initially the overworked assistant mayor of Zootopia to its mayor Leodore Lionheart, Bellwether secretly hates him and all predators, viewing them as nothing more than savage, dangerous monsters. In her scheme to overthrow him, take control of the city, and drive all predators out of Zootopia, Bellwether becomes the leader of a secret organization of sheep terrorists who create a serum from night howlers to turn predators feral. This would give the illusion that they were biologically reverting back to their "primitive savage ways" and eventually be regarded as too dangerous for society, allowing only prey animals to take up the entire population. However, in her goal to become the mayor of Zootopia, rather than subjecting Lionheart to becoming savage, Bellwether instead develops her plot to ensure that he is removed from office and his positive reputation amongst the citizens is ruined, allowing her to rise to power in his place.
Magic Users
Maleficent: Known as The Mistress of All Evil, Maleficent is a ruthless tyrant who rules her own subjects at her home, the Forbidden Mountain. Using her dark magic, she continuously abuses her power and authority over her minions, particularly whenever they display incompetence and stupidity. This is shown when Maleficent flies into a rage and attacks them with her magic upon realizing that, over the last 16 years in their search for Aurora, they were only looking for a baby, not realizing in their idiocy that Aurora would be growing up.
Ursula: Known for her dark reputation as a sea witch, Ursula was banished from Atlantica by Triton. She explains in âPoor Unfortunate Soulsâ that she uses her magic to help merfolk attain their deepest desires and only imprisons them if they canât keep their side of the bargain. However, after she takes Arielâs voice away and turns the latter into a human to try and win Ericâs heart, Ursula reveals she has no intention of letting Ariel follow through with kissing Eric to remain human. She proves herself to be a tyrant because all she really does is backstab the merpeople with whom she makes deals in order to ensure that only HER desires are met! When she bargains with Triton so he will surrender himself to her in exchange for Arielâs freedom, Ursula steals his crown and trident, then grows to giant size, declaring herself the ruler of the entire ocean.
Jafar: Unbeknownst to the Sultan of Agrabah, his Royal Vizier Jafar plots to take control of the kingdom, and he needs the Genie of the lamp from the Cave of Wonders to pull off this feat. Once the lamp is in his possession, Jafar succeeds with his first to become sultan. But after Jasmine and her father refuse to bow to him, he wishes to become the most powerful sorcerer in the world to have an even greater amount of power. During his brief reign, Jafar proves himself to be a tyrant by turning Agrabah into a dystopian wasteland, dressing the Sultan as a living marionette and allowing him to be abused by Iago, and making Jasmine his own slave girl.
Tyrants-Turned-Heroes
The Beast: From the time he is cursed and until he finally starts to soften, the spoiled behavior the prince had before his curse remains. He is aggressive, rude, impatient, and frequently and easily loses his temper when something annoys or irritates him. Primarily due to his short temper, the Beast acts like a tyrant towards his servants because he is mean and cruel to them as he gives them orders, which makes them deeply afraid of him. Only on some occasions do they openly rebel against him or talk back to him, such as Mrs. Potts ordering the Beast to act more like a gentleman around Belle, and both her and Lumiere deciding to feed Belle despite being told that she was not allowed to eat unless she ate with the Beast.
Kuzco: In the beginning, Kuzco is very arrogant, lazy, selfish, and self-absorbed, viewing himself as superior to all simply for being the emperor. He rules his empire completely without the best interest of his people and always seeks to have his way, never showing any concern over the chances things could turn out badly for other people involved. This is shown when he sets his sights on building his summer home of Kuzcotopia on the top of the hill where Pacha, Pachaâs family, and other villagers reside. Since the plan will only benefit himself, Kuzco shows absolutely no care or concern that destroying Pachaâs village to build Kuzcotopia will render the residents homeless.
Would-Be Tyrants
Gaston: From what I described about him in âBride and Prejudiceâ with his growing obsession with Belle and his low, inferior views of women, there is no doubt in my mind that, had Gaston succeeded in marrying Belle and starting a family with her, he would have run his household like a tyrant. He would be very controlling to the point of being physically abusive to his wife in order to get her to obey every single one of his commands and orders. Like many of the tyrants I listed above, Gaston would undoubtedly use fear and intimidation to keep his wife in her proper place of being beneath him, and he would instill these same feelings on to his own children.
Yzma: Her ire drawn after Kuzco remorselessly fires her, a furious Yzma decides to kill him so that she can take over the empire. While Kuzco is initially selfish, callous, and uncaring towards his staff and people living in his empire, he learns to change his ways by the end of the film. Had Yzma succeeded in her goal, she would have been far more of a selfish, ruthless tyrant than Kuzco was at first. This is evident during her introduction scene, which is one of many times she governs the empire whenever Kuzco is not present. As a peasant complains to her that he and his family are suffering from limited food sources, Yzma spitefully says his problem is of no concern to her, and that the man should have realized this ahead of time.
Hans: While taking over as temporary ruler of Arendelle in both Elsa and Annaâs absence, Hans wins the hearts of the people by acting as a kind, caring, benevolent ruler during the harsh conditions brought on by Elsaâs magical winter. Though he reveals his true, dark nature to Anna and his plot to take control of Arendelle, the fact that he earned the trust and respect of the Arendellians suggest that Hans could truly have been a very worthy ruler. However, now that we have Frozen II and it revealed that Runeard was actually a malevolent tyrant behind the same kind of benevolent facade that Hans used, there is no doubt in my mind that had he succeeded in stealing Arendelleâs throne, Hans also would have become a ruthless, power-hungry, selfish tyrant in secret.

9. meeting online au
Catra doesnât know why Adora, aka tumblr user @swordlesbian, still follows her two years after Warriors got cancelled. Well, it didnât technically get cancelled, but most fans quit watching it after Horde Queen Câyra, She-Raâs love interest, got killed off.
Most Warriors fans deactivated or changed their urls and moved on. Catra quit watching, so @swordlesbian is her only source for any Warriors updates. Not that she pays much attention to them, She-Ra hasnât had another love interest since and a few more of the characters Catraâs liked have died.
Besides, Catra has moved past fandom now. She mostly reblogs pictures of song lyrics and black and white pictures of Hayley Williams. Every now and then sheâll send Adora questions for an ask meme, and Adora will do the same. But they donât dm each other.
Until one day, she gets a notification on her phone.
@swordlesbian: hey, do u still watch warriors
@hordegf: not since they killed câyra, why
@swordlesbian: okay i know this is a reach but i think theyâre going to bring her back
@hordegf: WHAT
@swordlesbian: YEAH
@hordegf: please donât mess with me, this show has already hurt me enough
@swordlesbian: LMAO I SWEAR
@hordegf: if they bring her back iâm going to be so mad
@swordlesbian: why would you be mad?
@hordegf: ⌠do i really need to explain myself on this one?
@swordlesbian:
lol fair enough
They do bring Câyra back. She had faked her death this whole time. Itâs awful writing. But She-Raâs and Câyraâs actresses have such good chemistry, Catra canât resist watching it again.
[post reblogged via @swordlesbian] #god do they have to be so hot tho #warriors #otp: promise #wait should i change my tag for them? #actually i donât know what i should change it to #promise still holds up
[post reblogged via @swordlesbian] #can she ra not look so good while fighting? #warriors #c: warrior queen of my heart
[post reblogged via @swordlesbian] #LOOK AT THEM #theyâre going to be endgame!!! #warriors #otp: promise
Catra hates that she gets excited when she sees Adora has messaged her.
@swordlesbian wow i canât believe u became a warriors stan again, how embarassing for u
@hordegf can u leave me alone
@swordlesbian no :o) câyraâs not with the horde anymore your urlâs no longer canon
@hordegf @rebelliongf is taken :(
@swordlesbian wow thatâs homophobic :o(
Adora cosplays She-Ra. With a sword and everything. If Catra wasnât already gay before⌠She hesitates, but decides to message Adora anyway. Sheâs just some random girl online, right? So what if theyâve been mutuals for years. Whatâs the harm?
@hordegf itâs illegal for you to look this good cosplaying
@swordlesbian đĽşđĽşđĽş
Even after the final season of Warriors ends with a life altering lesbian kiss, Catra finds herself messaging Adora pretty frequently. Sheâs funny, and itâs nice to talk to someone whoâs gay. Catraâs not out of the closet. Sure, most students at Fright University are open minded, but she doesnât feel close enough with anyone to tell them.
She doesnât think anyone would understand her the same way Adora does anyway.
Sheâs about to send Adora a meme when she sees that she has an unread message from her.
@swordlesbian: is it okay if i ask for your number?
Catra smiles. She had wanted to ask for Adoraâs but she wasnât sure if that was crossing a line or not.
@hordegf: sure
Catra sends it to her. Not even twenty seconds later she gets a text with a Crimson Waste area code.
Unknown Number hey! this adora @swordlesbian
Catra stares at it. Crimson Waste is only a three-hour long drive from Fright City. Has Adora really been that close this whole time?
Unknown Number please tell me this is the right number
Catra beams and adds Adora to her contacts.
catra: donât worry, itâs me, catra @hordegf
adora âď¸: thank god
catra: okay not to be creepy but
adora âď¸: but
catra: do you live in crimson? i recognize the area code
adora âď¸: iâm from there! i go to school in bright moon tho
Catraâs heart sinks. Of course Adora goes to Bright Moon. That explains all the studyspo posts.
And that means sheâs a five hour flight away.
catra: cool
adora âď¸: wait if you know the area code, where are you from?
catra: iâm in fright city rip
adora âď¸: no way!! thatâs so close! i visit home in three weeks for fall break... would you wanna meet up sometime? i can borrow my momâs car. i actually love driving to fright city haha
Catra sucks in a breath. It hits her suddenly, that she actully has a chance to meet Adora.
And that Adora would drive three hours to see her.
Itâs dumb, but Catra will let herself hold on to this feeling.
catra: yeah, that sounds great!!
adoraâď¸: :o)
(They talk to each other on the phone every day. The day before they meet, Adora asks her out. Catra says yes. When they meet, Adora is much taller than Catra expected, which wouldnât be an issue if they werenât kissing so much.)
#catradora#catradora fic#if the italics are funky that's on tumblr not me#appsa#ty apsa!!#i had to stop myself before i got too deep into their meet up rip#mail#ask meme#my writing#she ra#fics

Top 10 Things I Love About Supernatural
Itâs been almost half a year since the show ended and now that the dust has settlIed, I just want to list ten reasons I love this show. Despite itâs flaws, itâs been quite the ride.
1. Team Free Will
When I first got the idea to make this list, I originally planned on doing entirely separate entries for âSam & Deanâ and âDestielâ. Except then I wanted to pay tribute to âSastielâ. And then I wanted to do an entry for âTeam Free Dadsâ. By that point, I was already halfway through the list and I hadnât even moved on from the main characters. A few months ago, I made a post about why I love every single pairing in this group. Obviously, Sam and Dean are a legendary duo. Obviously, Dean and Cas have an unparalleled story. Obviously, Sam and Cas are an underrated team. As for Team Free Dads, Iâve always had a soft spot for father/mentor figure characters and and all three tackle the role in different ways. I love Jack, too. I love how everyone in this bizarro family is âbrokenâ in some way. Weâve got the Allistairâs prized pupil, the spawn of satan, the boy with demon blood, and the angel who nearly obliterated all of heaven. But they help each other heal by being supportive and seeing the good in each other. They all love each other so deeply and when together, nothing can stand in their way. Not Michael, not Lucifer, and not God himself. They tore up the book and wrote their own story. And it was a pleasure to watch it all unfold.
2. The Suppporting Characters
To list every single supporting character I have loved and lost in this show would take way too long. I donât know if itâs the writing or acting performances, but I love pretty much every single supporting character on this show. Even villains like Azazel or Allistair are top-notch villains. Hell, I even like characters like Metatron, Lucifer, Mary, and John! Characters like Rufus, Charlie, Crowley, Rowena, Kevin, Ellen, Jo, Bobby, Gabriel, Balthazar, Mick...how am I not supposed to love them??? All of their stories were cut so short. Iâd watch a show about any of these characters. The Wayward Sisters were robbed. So many ships were gone too soon (Sam/Rowena, Dean/Jo, Cas/Meg, Etc.). So many heartbreaking deaths. I want to be best friends with all these characters. Why be a âdean-girlâ or a âsam-girlâ when you can be a garth-girl? A kevin-girl? A claire-girl? A bela-girl? There are so many great characters with interesting and compelling backstories and so much untapped potential. I could go on forever on this, but I digress. This show has one of the best supporting casts I have ever had the pleasure of watching.
3. The Themes
Itâs no accident that I got addicted to this show at the time that I did. Namely, my Senior Year of College and 2020. Graduating college and entering the âreal worldâ felt like itâs own sort of apocalypse. 2020 definitely exacerbated my worst tendencies. Messages like âfamily donât end in bloodâ, âyou can write your own storyâ, and âalways keep fightingâ really resonated with me. I could definitely relate to the feelings of insecurity these characterâs felt and the ways they suppressed/repressed their issues instead of facing them. I could relate to the feelings of not fitting in and I could definitely relate to the loneliness. This show helped remind me that Iâm not alone. That itâs okay if my values and identity donât line up with the what I envisioned for myself. And, most importantly, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that I should never give up. If Dean, Sam, and Cas can keep moving forward despite their demons and despite how bad it gets, so can I. Regardless of how the story ended, these themes resonated with me and Iâll still hold them with me. A single episode canât take that away.
4. The Fun Episodes
This show has so many legendary standalone episodes. Changing Channels. Ghostfacers. The French Mistake. Fan Fiction. Tall Tales. Bad Day at Black Rock. When this show goes for the absurd, it goes all-in. It takes the risks it needs to take, it gets completely insane, and it pulls it off. So many of these episodes could have easily been the moment that the show âjumped the sharkâ. Yet, time after time, the show delivered on itâs potential. I donât know how much I can say about these episodes except that they made me laugh out loud, made me fall even harder for these characters, and that theyâre the episodes I remember best. If I were to rewatch any episode, it would be one of the fun ones. This show knew how to not take itself too seriously and how to poke fun at itself. Iâve always had a soft spot for shows that can make me laugh and cry (X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel, Doctor Who, etc.), and this show definitely nails the fun part.Â
5. The Sad Episodes
Deathâs Door. Hammer of the Gods. Despair. Carry On. Abandon All Hope. In My Time of Dying. Swan Song. When this show wants you to cry, it doesnât pull the punches. It gets downright devastating. No character is safe. Literally every character you love will either be forgotten or will die. Or both. The amount of trauma Sam and Dean have to go through is insane. Both have literally been to hell and back. Both have killed countless people, including innocents. When this show decides it wants to wreck you, itâs overwhelming. I sobbed when Bobby died. I sobbed when every single member of Team Free Will died for the final time (I still canât watch any of those scenes). I still wish Jo, Ellen, Charlie, Kevin, Mick, and Gabriel had been given more time to tell their stories. Being a hunter means a life of endless angst. Being an angel or demon doesnât get you off the hook, either. I remember going into this show thinking it couldnât hurt me. My favorite character type is âmentor/father figureâ. But holy hell...I donât think every single sad moment was necessarily good writing, but when it was? Damn.Â
6. The Biblical Themes
Iâm not a relgious person. But, despite this show being steeped in Christian mythology, it really touched on my feelings about the Old Testament in a profound way. Well, really just Ben Edlund and Robbie Thompson did. Iâve never seen a show really hit the overall feel of the bible the way this show does. The idea of Angels as mystical and terrifying creatures. The idea of God as a flawed father figure with a penchant for wrath. The sheer epicness of the biblical stories. The idea of family members constantly being turned on each other. Cain and Abel. Jacob and Essau. Moses and Ramses. Moses and Aaron. Abraham and Isaac. The bible is full of stories of family drama. This show doesnât always give angels and demons weight. Sometimes itâs silly and stupid and cheesy. But when it hits right? Itâs epic. This is more of a personal thing I love about the show, but definitely a plus!
7. The Music
The early seasons music is so good. I really miss the classic rock of the golden era of the show. I mean, there are still some great musical moments later on, but damn. I loved hearing songs I recognized and I loved learning new songs. I loved when the song and the scene hit perfectly in time (Deathâs intro. Casâs return in Season 13.). Also Supernatural wouldnât be Supernatural without the âCarry On My Wayward Sonâ song at the end of every season. Even at the end of a season I didnât love, that recap would always get me pumped. Also Chuck singing Fare Thee Well? Dean and Lee singing together? Fan Fiction? All great.Â
8. The Cast & Crew
I never care about the actors or actresses in a show. I definitely donât bother with the names of specific writers and directors or their styles of writing/directing. Theyâre just random people who happen to write for or play these characters I love. Theyâre not actually the characters. But these guys? Well, for one, Iâm pretty sure half this cast actually is their character. At least to some degree. Theyâre also just...really cool people? Who are all friends? They make a point to do community service, to interact with fans, and to promote positive ideas. Jaredâs Always Keep Fighting campaign. Misha and GISH. The fact that they all participate in fundraising opportunities and encourage fan engagement. Do they all have issues? Definitely. Have they said stupid things? Yes. But the good far outweighs the bad. Theyâre an entertaining bunch whether onscreen or not and I hope they all do well in whatever their future endeavors may be. Â
9. The Fandom
I joined this fandom late. To be honest, I thought this fandom was obnoxious before I found myself a part of it. Now that Iâve been in the trenches? Itâs got itâs ups and downs like any fandom. There are some parts that are more toxic than others. A lot of people yelling that their opinion is the only opinion. But overall? The good outweighs the bad. And the good? The good is great. Some fanfictions Iâve read are better than actual books Iâve read and just as moving. The fanart? Incredible. I love reading all the metas about random aspects of the show I never would have noticed. I love the music videos and I love the analytical videos. In real life, Iâve made many friends through our mutual love of this show. Hell, even getting sucked into GISH once or twice has given me some solid memories and brought me closer to friends. I wish all fandoms were this much like family. Iâm so glad I got to be a part of this fandom and I canât wait to continue being a fan. After all, nothing ever stays dead in Supernatural.
10. The Chaos & Insanity
Season 16 has been a time. First, Destiel went canon. Then suddenly Sherlock was having a 5th season, Putin was retiring, and Georgia was going blue. Destiel going âcanonâ and Joe Biden winning the presidency will always be correlated in my mind now. Things in the fandom went from quiet to blaringly loud real fast. Carry On happened. The fandom went into a civil war. I canât even remember half of what happened in Season 16, but itâs been a wild ride. Thereâs been ups (my personal favorite being the french dub and the Saileen wedding). Thereâs been downs (Jaredâs controversial statements and the original scripts being leaked). At one point Misha Collins had sex with Bill Clinton???? Itâs been a wild time. Itâs honestly gotten me through the end of this pandemic. At least itâs entertaining. I would say that at least all the craziness is over, but is it ever really over? Every time I say that something else completely insane happens. But itâs been fun. Iâm glad I started watching this show despite my reservations and hereâs to whatever happens next.Â

5)Samjess, Sameileen, Samruby, Samcas, or someone else? In terms of canon feels, Sam/Jess. In terms of what I think was best done/most interesting, Sam/Amelia. In terms of what Iâd be mostly likely to read/write Sam/Cas.
8)If you could remove one season of supernatural, which one would it be and why? My gut instinct is three. Itâs an in between season (season two ended on a high note with a mostly complete story back during the day we worried about renewal), the writerâs strike was particularly brutal for SPN, the treatment of Ruby/Bela behind and in font of the screen and I donât think SPN was ever more insidiously misogynistic. I never liked Gordon, but I liked his death even less. Hendrickson dying was like a crime. Just murder him right when we had a window of new story opportunities. Oh and Jo and Ellen suddenly disappearing? Not a fan.
But there were a handful of excellent episodes and the season held together thematically. And deciding that they couldnât pull off darkside!Sam just yet and went and dragged Dean into hell was wise. Necessity really is the mother of innovation.
So season ten. The Mark of Cain was really boring. Dean got worse with no real play off. And, like, that in itself wouldnât bother me. Samâs reaction to Dean was enough to mostly entertain me. But a) the writing wouldnât go dark enough and b) Jensen was not great at portraying the Mark as anything but Dean as slightly more astonish than usual (when all the narrative and film language were telling me that the Mark was changing Dean). Jensen is a fantastic Dean. Everything else was mostly âehâ.
Mostly it felt like a case of build up to no real pay off. Dean is slightly less terrible in season 11, but he never really has to, you know, deal with what he did. Iâm not even asking for him to grow enough to think about why he took the mark so recklessly. Iâm just asking for some character beats about becoming a demon and maybe some angst about some of the shittier stuff he pulled.Â
9)What episodes best encapsulates the brotherâs relationship? Does this change throughout the series? Doesnât have to be the best episode btw. There really isnât one. Sam and Dean have a complicated relationship that changes throughout itâs fifteen year run. If you put a gun to my head, Iâd probably say Baby in terms of just showcasing how Sam and Dean tended to interact in mid to late season SPN.
But then there are individual episodes that show how far theyâll go for each other (Faith, Mystery Spot, Appointment in Samarra, I Think Iâm Going to Like It Here, Brotherâs Keeper, Red Meat), how their abusive and toxic childhood haunts them into adulthood (Playthings, Dark Side of the Moon), how they bring out the best in one another (Fresh Blood, A Very Supernatural Christmas, The End, Point of no Return, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Hello Cruel World, Torn and Frayed) and worst (Sex and Violence, Appointment in Samarra, Hello Cruel World, Sacrifice, I Think Iâm Going to Like It Here), how powerfully they love one another (Swan Song, Carry On, I Think Iâm Going To Like It Here, Red Meat), or even just how they vibe around each other (Hell House, Tall Tales, Baby), or the uncomfortable incestuous undertones (Playthings, I Know What You Did Last Sumer, Sex and Violence, Sacrifice, Carry On). And these are just on the top of my head on the first 10 seasons (plus a few season 11 eps I remember and the finale)l.
And each one of these are different. Like, Faith and Mystery Spot play a similar role in that itâs about Sam keeping Dean alive. But, in Faith, Sam has lines heâs not willing to cross. He wouldnât have healed Dean if it cost an innocent life. In Mystery Spot, after years of new trauma plus an Angel torturing him, Sam is wiling to kill an innocent that he loves.
SPN stayed on the air for long, in part, because of Sam and Deanâs complicated and evolving relationship. A season one Sam and Dean Love Each Other The Most episode is going to be different than a season ten one. But thereâs also enough consistency that, after fifteen years, they can circle back to the pilot and give us a heartbreaking confession that colors and changes everything without it feeling like a retcon. I cried during Deanâs death scene and was genuinely moved by his speech - and I hate the guy.Â
(ask me SPN questions!)
