okay no I'm doing this. I’m gonna let myself fall down the rabbit hole and get on my silly soap box about how it’s not just about how Penny’s going to come back, it’s that nuts and dolts is endgame

here we go, clown time

it’s just.

it’s that they’re heroes, it’s that they make each other better, it’s that they see themselves in each other, it’s that they learn so much about themselves because of the other.

they MAKE each other HEROES.

they MAKE EACH OTHER.

which is to say:

there is something so inherently aspirational in the way RWBY handles romantic attraction. this is why when Renora finally confess their love to one another, the conversation comes in the shape of “I suck but you’re awesome” “what NO I suck but you’re awesome!;” this is why Pyrrha’s final love letter to Jaune isn’t just a step-by-step instruction guide on how to meet his potential, but a starry-eyed ode to how his determination to reach his potential inspires her. this is why Yang is so insulted when Blake frames the Adam issue as one protecting the other; why Yang being insulted is framed as the major thematic roadblock that it is, and not just a minor miscommunication. because partnership, love, and romance in RWBY, it’s about being trusted to pull your own weight. about learning how much you’re capable of pulling, because of that trust.

it’s about leaning to see a better you, inside of someone else. not that you want to be them, per se, but that they can show you what’s possible. and you can only see it because that person inspires you, they’re amazing, there’s so MUCH to them. and if they can be that complicated and nuanced and deep, if you can still find new things in them to love every day, then... maybe there’s more in you, too. and you want to be that you for them, but they also make you want to be that you FOR YOU.

and. and Ruby met Penny, and Penny wasn’t sure she was a person at all, and one of the first things Ruby ever said was I see your soul

Ruby has just as much of a hand in Penny’s creation as Pietro does, because Ruby shaped Penny’s becoming. Penny isn’t the product of one breath of life, or one single spark. it’s a constant verb, and Penny’s biggest cheerleader and coach and adoring crowd all in one has always been Ruby, telling her she’s wonderful and she’s normal and she’s wonderful because she’s normal. as Penny discovers and accepts and embraces all of the different facets of herself, as she learns to recognize them as inherently human after all, it’s Ruby she’s using as her benchmark of measurement. and when push comes to shove and Penny's set on a path of self-destruction, exploited for how she was made, it’s Ruby’s words that speak her into existence once more, Ruby’s words that give her the safety to create herself. Ruby gives Ambrosius boundaries; Penny takes what she has, what she’s always been, and does the work.

but it goes both ways. it is Penny-- not just symbolically or metaphorically, but LITERALLY Penny, our Maiden of Creation-- who makes Ruby the Huntress she is. Penny who pushes the button that graduates her from being a student; Penny who groks what Ruby’s Semblance really is, and explains it to her. Penny who gets the message out, so all of Remnant knows the truth, knows the stakes, knows My name is Ruby Rose. I’m a Huntress. Penny, the artificially created being, is a creature of no limitations, with countless tricks up her sleeve, but no instruction manual to go by when it comes to self-regard. Ruby has always known exactly who she is and what she wants to be, but sees only her limits; it is Penny who shows her just how many tools she has at her disposal, and how to use them. it is for Penny that Ruby finally masters use of her silver eyes, at will. tangible and intangible, concrete and conceptual. balance. exchange. translation. it’s a dance, the two of them.

that’s not an accident, or a coincidence. that’s the point.

that’s the story.

Just had it pointed out to me on discord that the way Salem holds onto Ozma's staff after he dies is very visually similar to the way Ruby holds onto Penny's sword and now I'm dying. The parallels! They have got to be doing this on purpose.

Name: Penelope Pancakes

Age: 28 (born/created 12/25)

A happy pure robot girl blessed with a soul after a couple wished on a star for a child after difficulties to convince, Penny was born into the Pancake household in the form of their Roomba, but her parents, both skilled engineers, we're able to build her a body and raise her as their own.

Now she lives with her husband (me, cringe is dead) and is the lead protection of the small village she lives in.

She loves her life and exudes a contagious positive attitude to everyone meets her.
