Growing edible plants in pots is easy and convenient but from time to time they will need some maintenance. Josh has three pots growing in a sunny position on his back deck that need attention.
First is a large pot of mixed herbs; it’s handy having a range of herbs on hand and it looks great, but inevitably some plants will dominate others over time. In this case, it’s the oregano.
Josh has already cut back the spreading oregano, and the sage and thyme have bounced back a little, but for a better long-term outcome, he will rejuvenate the whole pot and remove some of the oregano.
He digs out most of the oregano roots - these can be potted up if wanted to create new plants for friends. The sage is cut back a little and a layer of decomposed topsoil is removed so it can be replaced with fresh potting mix, plus compost and a few handfuls of pelletised manure.
As he replants, Josh then adds some extra seedlings for variety: purple and tricolour sage, winter savory and common thyme.
Finally, the mix is mulched well and the pot is watered well.
Another pot has been home to a lemongrass plant for many years. It’s been growing well but has spread to fill the whole pot, so there is probably very little potting mix left around its roots.
He chops the foliage back to reduce stress on the roots and divides the clump, removing clumps of outer roots that can be potted up separately. He trims the roots a little, teases them out and repots the main clump with fresh potting mix. A handful of pelletised manure and mulch follow, then a thorough watering.
The largest pot is home to a makrut lime, which looks great as well as providing leaves for cooking. However, repotting a small tree of this size is a bit daunting. Instead, Josh gives it a light prune each year to keep it in check, and he removes some of the soil from the top of the pot to make room for fresh potting mix. The fresh mix will have better structure, improving drainage, and fertiliser is added for extra nutrients. Some of the surface roots are lost in this process but this is a mild root prune, encouraging the plant to create new roots.
Finally, the pot is mulched and watered in with liquid kelp to reduce shock.
Featured plants:
Sage ‘Purple’ (Salvia officinalis cv.)
Sage ‘Tricolour’ (Salvia officinalis cv.)
Winter savory (Satureja montana)
Thyme ‘Common’ (Thymus vulgaris cv.)
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon sp.)
Makrut Lime (Citrus hystrix)
Filmed on Whadjuk Country in Perth, WA

Misc. photos from the past year or so ~
#image commentary in tags once again since they don't allow captions anymore and I feel weird using the alt text for that --#1. napping bapy boye sneeping on his own foot as if it were a pillow#2. The little primrose that I have seems to bloom sporadically all year around as long as I bring it inside and don't let it freeze#in the winter. This was a flower that came up randomly like mid november lol#3. Rainbow where you can see a little bit of a second rainbow near the bottom of it :0#4. CHILDREN.... love to see them.....#5. Halloween Candy ranking tierlist. not important enough to post on it's own. so throwing it in with one of these I guess lol#I am also not really a candy person at all and prefer bready stuff like cakes rather than chocolate bars (if I even have to have sweets#at ALL which usually I prefer savory food). I suspect the apple is controversial but.. I do love apples .... huzzah#actually am having applle and peanut butter snack right now as I'm writing this lol#6. Various bowls/cups/etc. that I got from a store at COMPLETELY different times like.. years apart from each other#yet at some point realized that they all mostly match in paint color and seem to be part of the same pattern#But I totally didnt make that connection until a few years ago when I was putting up dishes. I just bought them all invidually because it's#like 'oh cool! a cat' *1 year later* 'oh cool! a cat!' etc. lol.. I guess it must be a popular design if it's been around being sold that#long.#7. carne asada burrito and matcha bubble tea... oughhgh.... again one of my very rare meals where I actually go and get something..#probably my favorite meal currently. Something about the Chronic Anemia makes me crave beef burritos madly despite only having one#maybe twice a year or so ghjbhj.. plus the beans.... onions.... many of my Diet Forbidden foods... Also of course the little aishas#are there.... somehow they shall split the meal together even though it's like 10x bigger than their bodies.. they are also hungry#and vastly anemic... huzzah to them...#8. I've had this shirt for a long time but it fits very weird so I can never find a way to use it in outfits?? But I recently had#an appointment where a doctor needed to be able to look at my back and it's one of the only actual Shirts that I have (mostly i just own#long robes or tunics or jumper dress type of things that would be hard to lift up or etc. like... I dont even own a single normal 't-shirt'#or anyting aside from one giant tshirt that I sleep in in the summer lol.) So I wore this there.. I forget how much I love the pictures on#it.. how pleasant... little hummingbird... AND I think one of the flowers is supposed to be columbine ... !#photo diary

𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝘀, the typical food of the feast of Sant Esteve (26th of December), 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝘀. Back then, holiday travel to be with the family took much longer, of course, and so people needed more time to return home the day after Christmas. Taking St. Stephen’s Day off was the perfect solution.
Made with the leftover meat from the escudella, traditional canelons are eaten on December 26th.

+ Breakfast
send + (a word) for some meta thoughts // ACCEPTING! @draggeddowntothedark
//i was super surprised at that word and i am delighted about it actually (history nerd rosie incoming) but rosie you say, she's a witch ghost, fantasy a plenty- shuttup, lemme keep the parts of history i want
Amity's breakfast choices would have been very dependent on the season! For the most part, a porridge would have made up the base and then had extras depending on what was available at the time. The Arkhams were founding members of the town, and clearly owned land, so options would have been things like accompanying fruits, and meats (though whether that meat was fresh cooked or smoked would have depended on the season. gotham winters are harsh) I very much imagine her favorites being on the sweeter side. porridge with raspberries and a drizzle of honey and such.
not unlike how Olive Silverlock loves to dress up her waffles in the Gotham Academy cafeteria now
