I was watching a video of a political rally on youtube yesterday and it affected me pretty deeply. By which I mean it really fucking terrified me and I just hope whoever needs to see this does.

You have only one obligation to be a decent human being- reduce suffering.

You don’t have to think of things the way you do right now. Your group is not your race or gender or sexuality. Your group is humans. Those are who you fight for. Within humanity we are all different and we are all equal. We fight to make everything as not-shitty as possible.

Race is a made up concept. The variation that makes someone from a different “race” different from you is the same variation that makes you look different from your best friend. Sexual identity is not straight vs. gay. It is a spectrum that we cannot truly conceptualise because just like the rest of human variation it is nearly infinite in every direction. Gender and sex are part of that infinite variation. Nationality does not make you superior or inferior. It is where you happened to be born or had the ability to move to. Everything inherent about humans is like that. You are what you happen to be and so is everyone else. It doesn’t make you better or worse. It does not make you any more or less valuable.

I am not saying I have no biases. I was raised in a society with many prejudices, and I have to fight some of those pretty hard sometimes. I have internalised what has been told and shown to me. But I have the power to resist that and so do you. And it’s so fucking freeing. It is wonderful to free your mind from those traps. So much fear goes away, and so much lost potential becomes possible.

I promise you that a life without hate is worth all of the pain that getting out of your current mindset entails. You are not permanently broken just because you fell for harmful propaganda. If propaganda only worked on you, it wouldn’t exist. There is a life for you outside of that bubble you have come to enjoy being trapped in. There are communities outside of where you are right now. You can make friends. You can fall in love. You can have a meaningful purpose in life. You can have human connection outside of spaces that require payment of hatred and violence in order for you to be accepted and affirmed.

You do not want to look back at your life while dying to realise that you hurt others for your own sense of satisfaction.
