OCTOBER: Hey, what's this?
YENAY: This book is Eira Rosynhwyr's last instructions to her descendants. *ahem* "Rule over others through formally established monarchies..."
TYBALT: That tracks.
YENAY: "Be bitchy and mean to descendants of Maeve when you can get away with it."
LUIDAEG: Yep.
YENAY: "Frame October Daye for murder at every opportunity."
OCTOBER: I KNEW IT!

The more surprise dinner parties I get ambushed with, the more tempting it became to stab somebody who probably didn’t entirely deserve it but was getting on my nerves enough to make it feel like a good idea at the time.

read When Sorrows Come today, along with its accompanying novella, really really good, so many sweet character moments, an absolute joy to (re)read.
I think some of my fave scenes are all the tender conversations between Toby and Quentin, I love their relationship so much
really it felt like a chance to check in with so many of the characters that have popped up once or twice in the preceding 14 books
seeing Pete again was fun
I think this is the first book where Kerry has been fairly major, like she's not had more than the odd mention in prior books, she's pretty great
August, August intrigues me, I hope we get more of her in future books
and this brings me back to Be The Serpent the book that started this reread, going to start that tomorrow (well later today, it's already 1:50 am) and then I'm not sure, maybe I'll switch to InCriptid and reread all of that, or maybe I'll get back into Mercy Thompson and give what I have of that a reread (still not a massive fan of Patricia Briggs Werewolf lore), or something else,
I'll need something to read between now and when I get my hands on Sleep No More at the end of August

I’m re-reading WHEN SORROWS COME, and I genuinely don’t understand how the blind fosterage of noble children has any chance at all of being a real protection when the larger Fae don’t reuse names.
Being “Quentin of no particular name” does very little good when there’s only going to be one “Quentin” ever and that one has a very particular, very royal name that the members of one Court have good reason to know well, as the couple decades of his fosterage are an insignificant amount of time to adult immortals.
“Amandine of no particular name” only worked because genuinely almost no one knew her parentage, and thus no one was asked to forget and very few were tasked with pretending they didn’t know.

“It’s funny how things work out sometimes. The things you think will save you don’t, or can’t, or won’t. The things you thought were little, or unnecessary, change everything.”

thinking about scumcum and cumplane again
specifically if Airplane and Shen Jiu get together/married, but Shen Yuan transmigrated into Shen Qingqiu anyway.
i mean, how would airplane cope with that???? his partner got died and got replaced by someone who isn't even to blame, that he also kinda knows??? and he can't let anyone, even his friends or family, know under threat of punishment and/or death???
in the angsty route, if they were private with their relationship and no one knew they were together, Shang Qinghua could try as hard as possible to bring back Shen Jiu without anybody finding out anything was up in the first place. he could go on a wild goose chase for every single artifact/Mcguffin he put in this world trying to find one that would bring his love back.
or he could even find himself falling in love with the imposter that stole his husband's face and deal with all of the mental baggage that would come with that.
on a lighter note, if it's one of those 'Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan are the Same Person' stories, then maybe Shen Qingqiu would slowly remember his life as Shen Jiu, and fall in love with his husband again ❤️
in the worst case scenario, I don't think Shang Qinghua would be vindictive enough (or physically capable of because of the system) to rat Shen Yuan out to Yue Qingyuan and the rest of the sect for being a body snatcher... But he could be found out anyway :)

OCTOBER: The assassins clearly don't know exactly what I look like. That means if Cassie, Stacey, and May dress like me, we can have them chasing FOUR Octobers! TYBALT: Four Octobers, you say? Are we talking at the same time or... MAY: Still gay, Tybalt. STACEY: Still married. CASSIE: Still allergic to Target-brand bluejeans.

In the Dragon AU I kinda want a fight between Jason-Red Hood and Dick-Nightwing.
Outmatched in size and ferocity, but NW is both faster and more agile, with a steadier bond with his Rider?
Maybe Dick trying to protect Tim and his baby dragon?
Hoping he will have a chance to talk Jason down, or maybe, depending on how guilty he is or feels over Jason's death, hoping Jason will be content to take revenge on him and spare the baby bird?
Along with Jay and RH's traumatized dragon and rider in a feedback loop, Tim and Red Robin's inexperienced and not yet battle ready bond Dick and Nightwing could act as the third side of the dragon-human bonds.
Both young, but experienced and trained, with a healthy relationship?
Honestly I think if Dick were to attack Jason with Nightwing, Red would go in for the kill. She’d feel Jason’s sense of betrayal over the attack and absolutely lose it. Haven’t they taken enough from her sweet rider?
The bond between Tim and Jason would be there by virtue of Jason caring for the egg in its early stages, so there’s no psychic link between Jason and Dick. Only the tattered remains of a regular relationship from before Jay’s “death”.
If Jason manages to push his feelings of betrayal aside fast enough to dissuade Red from mauling the smaller Nightwing, he would probably still consider the attack a worse form of treachery than even Tim’s “theft” of his dragon and place in the family.
Dragons fighting dragons is a declaration of war, and the intent to kill. 👁️
Though I wouldn’t put it past Dick to deliberately draw Jason (and Red’s) ire away from Tim, with Nightwing and him both realizing that they’re signing their death certificates with that decision, but content with it as long as Tim and the little dragon get to live.

Grief is a weight that you can’t put down, only transmute into other things, and once it lands on your shoulders, you have to wait for time’s erosion to lift it off. We’re all Atlas, in a way. We carry all the sins of our past, and all the things we think we’ve lost, and we might as well do it forever for as long as it can seem to last.

I saw it in your tag game post that you're also fond of the Apollo-Heracles conflict 👀 for a myth that appears in only a couple of sources, it sure has a lot of presence in the vase paintings (no seriously, everytime I think I've seen the last of it, I find ten more)
SO do you have any favorites among the paintings that represent this story??
OMG OMG THIS ASK IS A GIFT. IT IS A GIFT THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR LETTING ME TALK ABOUT THIS
I also think it's extremely interesting that it's a story so popularly portrayed by vase paintings and in such a variety of ways!! It's certainly one of the stories that gets left out of written compilation of Heracles' legend a bit (which is a shame, I think it's a fantastic story) but Apollo had a very peculiar relationship with Heracles in general that I just kind of find amazing (and very, very funny).
Apollo is not a god with any legitimate grudge against Heracles, but he does argue with the mortal a bit like he argues with his favourite brothers 😂Part of why I love the story of Apollo and Heracles fighting over the tripod so much is that it is such a little brother thing for Heracles to be upset with the proclamation his elder brother has given him and so, he throws a great fit, taking up the chair and declaring that he'll just give himself a better prophecy! And Apollo, instead of being a marginally professional big brother, decides to fight him for it until their father has to break up their cat-fight. Like was that not just the plot of the Homeric Hymn to Hermes? Is this not exactly how Apollo treated Hermes when he was a child and now those two are inseparable? 💀
Because of this, my favourite vase paintings tend to be the ones that highlight the personal squabbling between Apollo and Heracles the most. There are some very elaborate ones that have the full host of them - Athena, Heracles, Apollo, Artemis, usually a dog and a doe, I've even seen a couple that had birds and plants etched on them, but the simplest ones that show Heracles about to bonk Apollo with his club out of frustration or depict Heracles nyooming away from Apollo while Apollo (presumably) yells curses about how he's going to fling Heracles head first into Tartarus for daring to take his things? Yeah, those are the premium big brother/little brother things I'm looking for.

#ginger answers asks#Thank you SO much for letting me talk about this even a little it always makes me smile#Despite their disputes - if you ask me Apollo was quite fond of Heracles#And I think a big part of why I ultimately come to that conclusion is that Apollo never hinders Heracles or withholds blessings from him#He simply calls him a bitch every time he sees him and then makes his life marginally more inconvenient#like any good older brother let's be so fr#It's extremely charming to see him so playful with a mortal he's not in love with/that is not his son#Other moments of Apollo teasing Heracles includes him trying to convince Artemis not to let Heracles catch her doe when he comes#to fulfill that particular labour (again he doesn't actually try to stop it he just puts up a bit of a fuss about it)#and perhaps another of my all time favourites#Personally luring Heracles into Admetus' house so Heracles can wrestle Thanatos while Apollo rescues Alcestis#I DO NOT KNOW WHY MORE PEOPLE DON'T TALK ABOUT THE LUNACY OF APOLLO'S ADMETUS/ALCESTIS PRESERVATION PLAN#He really said “No yeah I know a guy don't worry about Death Incarnate” and then Heracles shows up at Admetus' door like this is a sitcom#The laugh track that plays in my mind every time Admetus opens that door sees Heracles and then looks back at the disguised Apollo like#'HIM?? HERACLES?? Heracles who can break me in seven pieces with a thought Heracles???'#And Apollo just gives him a thumbs up and says “feed him well pookie <33”#Genuinely some of the funniest shit I have the pleasure of reading in greek myth#Another reason I don't think Apollo has any ill will against Heracles though is how Apollo reacts when Heracles#loses Hylas in the Argonautica#Or well some versions of the Argonautica - this is also a story that changes wildly depending on the source/compilation#But Apollo is incredibly sympathetic to Heracles' sorrow and kind of decides there and then that Heracles losing one love#should be the return of another and asks that Zeus let Heracles free Prometheus when he makes his descent into the underworld#Similarly it is Apollo who anoints Alcaeus/Alcides the name Heracles (also dependent on the myth source)#They just had a very fun relationship and it's a serious shame that it's not acknowledged more#apollo#heracles#greek mythology#(Also people do not talk about the fact that Apollo grappled with Heracles to a standstill enough actually)
