“The woman dies.
She dies to provide a plot twist. She dies to develop the narrative. She dies for cathartic effect. She dies because no one could think of what else to do with her. Dies because there weren’t any better story ideas around. Dies because her death was the very best idea that anyone could come up with.
‘I’ve got it! Let’s kill her off!’
‘Yes! Her death will solve everything!’
‘Okay! Let’s hit the pub!’
And so, the woman dies. The woman dies so the man can be sad about it. The woman dies so the man can suffer. She dies to give him a destiny. Dies so he can fall to the dark side. Dies so he can lament her death. As he stands there, brimming with grief, brimming with life, the woman lies there in silence. The woman dies for him. We watch it happen. We read about it happening. We come to know it well.”
- The Woman Dies by Aoko Matsuda (translated by Polly Barton)

Biden goes positive. Can voters handle it?
Jennifer Rubin discusses Biden's new positive ad. If the question is, "Can voters handle" Biden's positive ad, the answer is, it's about time the Democrats told the story of Biden's successes to counteract the relentless disinformation about Biden coming from the right.
But even more important than that, Rubin brings home the fact that neofascists and demagogues NEED people to believe that their nation is falling apart and ONLY the Dear Leader can fix it. That's why it is particularly important to counteract Trump's and the GOP's dystopian disinformation about America under Biden.
Here are some excerpts from Rubin's column.
Biden’s ad, “Fought Back,” reminds us how bad things were under his predecessor, touts Biden’s economic accomplishments and accuses Republicans (while displaying Trump’s picture) of running America down. A list of bipartisan accomplishments, such as the bipartisan infrastructure law and the Chips bill, refutes the notion that the United States is paralyzed or incapable of solving its problems. [...] This message embodies Biden’s endemic optimism: “We just have to remember who we are. We’re the United States of America. And there’s nothing — nothing beyond our capacity — if we do it together.” Moreover, it rebukes Trump’s negativity, in effect saying: Refusing to credit the improvements in the economy is tantamount to slamming Americans and discrediting their hard work. (The ad shows Biden delivering one of his favorite lines: “It’s never, ever been a good bet to bet against America.”) [...] Biden stands ready to explain how his agenda — “Bidenomics” — brought us from fears of a pandemic recession to recovery. With unemployment and inflation in decline and wages rising, the public finally might be more amenable to hearing an uplifting message. Biden would be foolish not to take credit for gains achieved as a result of smart policy and bipartisan legislative wins. However, Biden’s ad does something more than present an economic argument. He’s asking a larger question: Do we really want to go back to the trauma of the Trump years? He is betting that voters, even if they are uncertain about the future, don’t want to wallow in anger, fear and pessimism. He offers not only a choice between two policies but also two different visions, which are miles apart in tone. [...] Historians tell us that fascism arises in a mood of “cultural pessimism” that fosters a demand to entirely remake government and casts the authoritarian strongman as a messianic-like figure who can arrest decline. Without cultural, economic and political ruin and ensuing panic, there is no crisis to quell. By contrast, if a democracy is producing real gains and people see improvement, voters will be less inclined to throw the entire system overboard to follow the cult leader. No wonder hyperbole, fearmongering and hysteria are part and parcel of the MAGA message. [...] For Trump, the present is always bleak; hence, we have to go back to the past to make America great again — and rely on him to fix things. Biden, therefore, has the task of not simply correcting the economic record but also of diffusing — perhaps mocking — Trump’s excessive negativity. Things are bad for Trump, but they need not be bad for the rest of us. We’ll be just fine if we keep our heads about us, look at the facts and trust in ourselves. That’s not a bad pitch for Biden or, for that matter, any democracy trying to ward off a hysterical demagogue. [color/emphasis added]

As a treat before the new season starts, I present to you: a compilation video of all the Washington Capitals postgame locker room player of the game celebrations from last season. Yes, this is EVERY rope and grip strength video from every win last year, I managed to find them all, and here they are packaged together neatly and in order for your entertainment. We can reminisce before we see what the new celebration is this year. I'm not a professional editor, I did my best to make it nice. Enjoy!
(Also a volume warning that some sections are very loud and screamy and some are very quiet, I didn't bother to edit volume because trying to make it consistent was a fruitless endeavor. So just keep that in mind when you're watching)

Fascinating article about a house with a large, established bat population and the new homeowners trying to do things correctly:
https://wapo.st/3C20KAz
Going by what I can access (the single paragraph below the video), I'll just have to take your word for it on what's going on, because without captions, it's a difficult for me to understand what's being said.
Are they keeping the bats or humanely removing them?

Appearing on MSNBC's "The Katie Phang Show," Guardian reporter Hugo Lowell claimed Donald Trump might have avoided being hit with violations of the Espionage Act if it had not been reported that he shared highly sensitive government documents with friends at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
According to Lowell, who has been reporting that the documents may have been hidden from Trump lawyer Evan Corcoran, a new report that Trump left documents laying about and might have shown them to others makes it more likely he'll face more severe charges if that is true.
"The Washington Post reported this week about how prosecutors seem to have evidence that Trump was showing highly sensitive documents to other people," Lowell began. "That's really interesting because that's the kind of aggravating move that a prosecutor looks for when they're trying to prosecute Section 93e of Title 18 which is the Espionage Act."
"There's two parts," he continued. "The first part is willful retention. Willful retention alone is very rarely charged, and I think in the case with the former president, with prosecutors, that was the only thing they might consider not charging."
"But if they have evidence that Trump was showing people and they have the second part of that clause, which is willful transmission and dissemination, that changes the game entirely," he added. "That is the sort of thing that they would charge. That is really concrete evidence that Trump has a lot of problems."

Trevor Noah bids ‘The Daily Show’ goodbye: ‘It’s taught me to be grateful’
And just like that, “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” is a thing of the past.
Noah hosted Comedy Central’s satirical news program for the final time on Thursday, an hour-long episode that was introduced to viewers as “a celebration of the fact that we fixed America.”
“When I started the show,” he said at the beginning of the episode, “I had three clear goals: ‘I’m going to make sure Hilary gets elected, I’m going to make sure I prevent a global pandemic from starting and I’m going to become best friends with Kanye West.’ I think it’s time to move on.”
Most of Noah’s farewell adopted the same tone — nostalgic, but cheeky. Aside from a brief interview with comedian Neal Brennan, the episode was entirely devoted to looking back on Noah’s seven years at the helm and poking fun at his vague plans for the future. At one point, Noah, who often references his South African upbringing, joked that there were “just a few hours before I fly back to Africa.”
“Rafiki’s holding up the new kid,” he continued, referencing the famous scene from the movie “The Lion King.” “We’ve all gotta be there. It’s a whole thing.”
With Trevor Noah’s departure from The Daily Show, I am feeling many of the same feelings I had when Jon Stewart departed 7 years ago--sad and distressed that a steady, rational presence, who often made me laugh out loud, will no longer be there to help me and others manage the near daily onslaught of propaganda from the right-wing media, Trump and the extremist branch of the GQP.
I only hope that Trevor’s replacement will be just as good as Trevor and his predecessor Jon Stewart.
Farewell Trevor Noah and thank you for being there for us these past 7 years, and giving us the gift of your wisdom, perspective, and humor.

inspired by the video the caps posted last week where they asked the players who would best play them in a movie and they all (save a few exceptions) made terrible choices, i am making a list of which actors would actually best play all of the caps. [a post with the casting will be made at a later date.] i've got a good chunk of them down, still stuck on a few. anyone got any good ideas/suggestions for which actors would be good choices for nicky, carly, marty, darcy, or kuzy? doesn't have to be how that particular actor looks now, it can be how they looked when they were younger
