I love how the faux-politeness of MDZS' climax takes its themes to its logical conclusion. All throughout, we've seem how sects and cultivators prioritise their reputations, seeking glory and status even when real lives are at danger, keeping up their appearances. We see that in the unwritten rule that major sects won't intervene in problems unless the prey is dangerous; we see it in how Lan Wangji is unique in the way he prioritises helping others over seeking glory; we see that in how the Wen situation plays out, with Wei Wuxian confronting the Jins about a concentration camp while they're focused on having a banquet.

So of course in the Guanyin Temple, even when Jin Guangyao is directly threatening people's lives, the interactions are polite! We're seeing what has always been present – the absolute disconnect between the actions and world of the Jianghu, and the real harm that real people are suffering through (both intentionally and not) as a result.

While rereading mdzs I am once again shocked by how talked about the "you were the only mistake he ever made" line from Lan Xichen to Wei Wuxian is and how heated it gets some people because honestly... I don't think he actually even believes that.

Stay with me. Look at the actual line. (I Included 2 translations for comparison's sake)

Firstly, yes he is mad at Wei Wuxian in this scene. But his biggest moment of anger was actually before this. By this point he's realized that Wei Wuxian forgot what happened after nightless city (and therefore ISN'T stringing along his baby brother on purpose) so he has in fact calmed down a bit.

Secondly, notice that he starts by talking about how his uncle felt. This is not Lan Xichen making a value statement about what he thinks. When he says Lan Wangji was proper and righteous he is talking about him being a model lan, he's talking about their family and clan's perspective of Wangji. Indeed, in their eyes, Wei Wuxian is the only time Lan Wangji was ever not the textbook perfect Lan.

Thirdly, what is Lan Xichen trying to say here? What is he mad at Wei Wuxian for? It's that he doesn't know Lan Wangji is in love with him. His anger is eased by realizing Wei Wuxian doesn't remember the very blatant confessions lwj made in the cave after nightless city, or Lan Wangji fighting his own clan elders for Wei Wuxian, and so had no way of knowing the whipmarks on Lan Wangji's back were related to him. But he is still mad, he still thinks Wei Wuxian should have been able to figure it out. So what does he highlight?

The fact that the only thing Lan Wangji, perfect model-Lan righteous Lan Wangji, ever defies his clan for is Wei Wuxian.

And Wei Wuxian has seen him do this! Even if he doesn't remember this one instance. Because Lan Wangji has been doing that the whole story through. Wei Wuxian has watched Lan Wangji blatantly stand against the entire cultivation world for him, and here Lan Xichen is highlighting just how unusual that is, how much Wei Wuxian must mean to Lan Wangji that he's willing to do that. The important part of the sentence here is not "mistake" it's "only."

Lan Xichen here isn't trying to say that he disapproves of Wei Wuxian, or telling him to stay away from his brother. Remember, the thing that made him mad in the first place was Wei Wuxian saying that he and Lan Wangji slept in seperate rooms. He thought they were together! He's mad because they're not!

At no point does Lan Xichen say he individually considers Lan Wangji's feelings for Wei Wuxian a mistake. If he ever did, it's clear he accepted them regardless long ago. Mistake or not, what he wants is for his little brother to be happy.

Jingyi has 温苑 (Wēn Yuàn) written on him ans hes a little horrified bc at this point hes had like a hundred historical retellings of how awful and terrible the Wen's were and he's bound to one now and also theyre probably dead

He tells himself that he can never show anyone his mark or else thatll be the end of his very short life, then he immediately goes to cry to Sizhui bc ofc he does

Sizhui, who got his mark a year or so prior and was patiently waiting for Jingyis to come so they can idk frolic into the sunset or whatever kids think

so hes just going through the motions comforting Jingyi but on the inside hes totally blanking out bc hello?? this was not how this was supposed to go. Lan Sizhui has Jingyis name but sees that Jingyi doesnt have his and is just really angsty about it in a way only pining teenagers can be

Most the other ppl his age are showing off their marks and Jingyi is just there thinking his soulmate must be some awful horrible person and also probably dead or smth and hes probably gonna die alone bc hes dramatic like that

and Sizhui is right next to him thinking kinda freaking out bc 'wtf fate???' Hes losing out on having his soulmate bc he doesn't want to steal someone else's soulmate even if they are a Wen

so thats their standstill for like four or so years

Lan Wangji at some point probably saw Jingyis mark and was like "😶" (also known as 😯😳) and then felt really guilty bc he wouldnt be able to tell them the truth bc thatd be putting BOTH of them at risk

but also if he doesnt, they could miss out on having their soulmate by their side like he did. So he just in this one sided battle with himself. Until.

Until that little fucker (affectionate) gets resurrected and Sizhui learns he is actually a Wen BUT THATS NOT THE END BC OFC ITS NOT

He was told that, yes, he is Wen Yuan, but Sizhui thinks his given name is Wēn 愿 (yuàn – honest, hope/desire) not Wēn 苑 (yuàn – park) so hes still like 'oh.. still not them..' (let LSZ be a drama king, he deserves it) So he goes on his escapade for answers with Wen Ning.

But then, at some point when Sizhui and Wen Ning are doing their exploration of their heritage, Sizhui wakes up from a dead sleep like "wait a fucking second"

A wangxian au came to me in visions and dreams last night

It was basically mountain dweller hgj coming to war hero wwx with a baby but there’s setup ofc

Madam lan runs away with her sons, she raised them as rogue cultivators who start to wear weimao once they start to look like their father ofc

They live in Wen territory, have a house in a mountain and only night hunt in the neighboring villages

This may mean wangxian haven’t met but unfortunately the lotus pier fall and things that happen after still occur…

When wen chao catches wwx he doesn’t drop him in the burial mounds tho, wzl gets curious about how he doesn’t have a core so they take him into one of their outposts prison

Meanwhile the Lu family are expanding just a bit their hunting grounds bc they heard of the mess happening (I’ll give the Lu surname for Madam Lan) they’re relocating a really small village near an outpost who was already ransacked for war provisions, but the wen took almost everything and those people won’t survive the trip without food so the Lu go there to steal it back ofc

They kill the people on the outpost to buy enough time for a relocation, (the farmers are not allowed to move, they were supposed to keep growing food for the war) and find wwx also there, ofc wwx was already in the middle of making a way to escape by himself but the help was surely appreciated

Mama Lu and her eldest son take the food to the villagers while her youngest son Lu zhan takes the very hurt wwx to hide back home for recovery

(yes I choose Lu just to be able to use lz bite me)

There goes very romantic 3 months, fun of homoeretic wound wrappings and revolutionary cultivational theories

While in the burial mounds he would turn to the plentiful resentful energy, in the Lu mountain it’s only a fleeting thought, instead he gets inspired by the music activated wards the mountain has

It’s already common knowledge that anchored wards just need maintenance in case of strain, but the fact that madam Lu was enough of a wiz at them to build up and make them take different effects depending on music who doesn’t strain a single player when it covers the entire mountain….

A cultivator cultivates their yang energy, and meditation in rich spiritual places will help but wwx just saw lz control an outside force!!!!!

So yeah, Wei Ying and his v pretty assistant create an entire new way of cultivating with seals that is powerful in proportion with a cultivator’s skills and preparation, not their golden core

Wwx goes to war, lz goes with his family and get his title of hgj by helping the people who suffer as collateral (which also gets mama lu and his brother tittles but I’d have to do research for those so eh) but after an year or so Lz finds a two albino twin babies at the foot of his mountain so he and his family end up with a schedule of who will stay with the babies, who needs a lot of care,

The war ended and lz wants to find wy and he will have too anyway since the babies are dangerously weak, they were clearly neglected before the Lu took them and the doctors they were able to contact and take home were only able to say they don’t have long

The Jiang Sect has married in the renowned doctor Wen Qing tho, so the family has hope

So there appears hgj in yummengJiang, with two spirit-like toddlers asking for war hero wwx’s help in saving their babies (meant his family’s, but not interpreted that way)

Now everyone is convinced wwx somehow got a man pregnant lmao

The kids will be ok with wen qings help ofc, there’s no medical marvel she can’t do in the Jiang with another genius to bounce ideas off there and the freedom to research
