The Lan Xichen POV to finding his brother gone in chapter two was also *chef's kiss* Excerpt: It was a normal day for Lan Xichen. Of course, as normal as a day can be when one’s brother gets whipped within an inch of his life and remains completely immobile. If normal could be defined as being consumed by your worries, then Lan Xichen’s day was absolutely normal. It was not as if Lan Xichen’s childhood was not defined by being a mediator between his brother and his uncle, between his brother and the elders. Surely, this push and pull would remain for the rest of their lives. Lan Xichen sighed. He sat himself on the side of his bed and nimbly pulled his hair out of his sleeping braid. The same braid he tied for his brother every morning. As Lan Xichen got dressed for the day, putting on all six pristine layers of his robes, he stopped at his desk. These days, he found himself almost crushed with the amount of work he had to do. Shufu, at the very least, decided to take on the work that Wangji could no longer do. Lan Xichen knew Shufu cared for and loved Wangji, but sometimes, even he himself found it hard to believe.

what i love so much about wei ying is how much he actually loves children. like he canonically is a good mentor/father figure and he wants to have kids of his own someday. it tears me apart inside thinking about how much he suppresses with jin ling because…that’s his shijie’s son, and in another world, he would’ve been the best uncle jin ling ever had. and with a-yuan being his “little one”, he was so heartbroken every time he thought a-yuan probably didn’t make it out of the burial mounds. in yi city, he was the ideal teacher: giving the disciples chances to figure out the solution for themselves and getting some hands on experience by guiding them on what to look for when night hunting…

lan zhan and wei ying’s dynamic with children is so special because anyone with half a brain can tell they care so much about all the kids they come across. truly after the war, with all the orphans and complicated family dynamics, to watch two people who mutually love and support each other through hell and back also simultaneously adopting every broken child is so healing, even when it doesn’t work out in the end.

Summary: In which Lan Qiren hears the rumors about Wei Wuxian supposedly being Jiang Fengmian’s bastard and comes to a wholly incorrect conclusion.

Lan Qiren did not want to think about Wei Wuxian more than necessary, but the accusations flung around stuck with him.

He had briefly run into Cangse Sanren and her husband during her pregnancy. The meet-up had been an accident, Lan Qiren out supervising a night hunt when he should have been watching over Lan Xichen. Cangse Sanren hadn’t been showing much yet, her robes still tied tight for combat as opposed to her husband’s loose ones, and she certainly hadn’t behaved like a pregnant woman, running circles around their little camp, eating messily when her husband handed her a bowl, just as much a menace as always. If anything, only Wei Changze acted appropriately, happy at the prospect of his impending fatherhood and offering a few insights into naming preferences between careful bites.

So bland! Cangse Sanren had complained about that night’s meal. All because of your nausea!

No, Wei Wuxian was undoubtedly the son of Wei Changze. They looked too alike for him to be anything else. Although Lan Qiren supposed Wei Wuxian wasn’t quite as soft in his features.

The thought gave Lan Qiren pause. Any accusations of Cangse Sanren cheating on her husband, and that with a Sect Leader, were frankly speaking ridiculous. As chaotic as her behavior had been, Cangse Sanren’s morals had been upstanding and she’d loathed sect politics enough to avoid getting involved in them. Her boy looked nearly exactly like his father and her faithfulness should be judged by that.

But, sitting side by side with Jiang Wanyin, Lan Qiren thought he could almost make out some similarities. While Wei Wuxian was nearly lying on his desk instead of sitting as upright as his brother, refusing to fix his posture even after a dozen reminders, they both had similarly thoughtful expressions. The shape of their eyes too wasn’t dissimilar, something about the eyebrows maybe. They completed each other’s mannerisms in a way that, if entirely twisted, reminded him of his own nephews.

But that couldn’t be because Wei Wuxian couldn’t more obviously be his father’s child—

Once more, Lan Qiren had to halt his thoughts. There was a Nie disciple sharing a room with Nie Huaisang, who had handed a missive from their Sect Leader to their doctors. It wasn’t Lan Qiren’s business how the Nie Sect conducted itself, and he hadn’t found any flaw with the disciple. Unlike Nie Huaisang, who, admittedly, managed to enrage Lan Qiren in a way wholly different from Wei Wuxian and taken much more personally. If the boy would just apply himself to his studies as much as his little schemes—

Regardless, that missive had also passed through Lan Qiren’s hands and he’d been assured nothing untoward would happen between Nie Huaisang and said disciple. They were an excellent student, with the same kind of soft features and posture reminiscent of Wei Changze.

Wherever she was, that Cangse Sanren must be laughing at Lan Qiren’s troubles, entirely too pleased with herself and the chaos she caused.

Faking a pregnancy, Lan Qiren was tempted to ban the verbatim in their code of conduct. How outrageous a person must be to even consider such!

And Wei Wuxian didn’t even manage to override his mother’s influences with Jiang Fengmian’s more pleasant attitude.

It was a shame.

I never even knew this idea of Jin Zixuan stepping up to be Wei Wuxian's new father figure was something that existed before it blew up on Twitter, but now I can't stop thinking about it. This story delivers on that idea and it's just so funny. The way Jin Zixuan is reckoning with the realization that Jiang Yanli sees Wei Wuxian as a son and what that means for him. Just awesome. Excerpt: After marrying Jiang Yanli, Jin Zixuan had to agree. Jiang Yanli was nothing but affectionate and supportive towards him, but the way she looked at him as his wife was very different from how she looked at Wei Wuxian. It was also, however, different from how she looked at her actual blood-sibling Jiang Wanyin.    fingers slide gentle through his hair as he attempts to pull huaisang back to his level. he had been there and held wei ying, shaking, through the acceptance of it. he holds him now despite the fact it is another mans child he bares. “ stop that, ” he chides, voice cracking despite his best attempts. “ what have i done to earn such affections ? ” with force he pulls his face into a smile despite his suspicions he will see though it.

DETONATE: Meng Yao, a former teen popstar now trying to find his place in the music industry as an adult after a string of toxic relationships, has a Britney-style meltdown and hits true rock bottom. what he doesn't expect is how many hands there are reaching down to help him up - and the fic is all about his process of him healing, going through therapy, realising just how many people love and care about him despite his best attempts to alienate them, and discovering who he really is when he's not in the spotlight, and who he wants to be. this fic has a lot of very serious and sometimes dark and difficult themes, but at its core is a story about growth and love, and Meng Yao triumphantly finding success through taking his life and agency back.

NO DRUG LIKE ME: head nurse Meng Yao has enough on his plate with trying to stop the interns fucking in the break room, trying to stop his pigheaded cousin from causing more trouble, and trying to, you know, do his fucking job so his father doesn't get him fired, he just doesn't have time to pine over the distractingly hot and frustratingly lovely Doctor Lan! and so he's not going to do it! (he's totally going to do it) there are a few tense and mildly angsty moments, but overall this fic is fun and cute and hilariously horny hospital AU.

thoughts on wei wuxian's dadhood or lack thereof re: a-yuan?

Oh man.

My thoughts are two-fold:

1) Symbolically, going forward from the end of canon, it's super important that he and Lan Zhan have a kid. He's got his whole domestic fantasy, riding around on the donkey like his parents being a nuclear family with a little one, which gets brought up before the readers know the full tragedy of the Wen remnant massacre. (One of those classic MXTX moves!) But, lo and behold, in fact the little one he thinks of and mourns at the time is actually okay, he's grown up into the delightful and perfect Lan Sizhui, the son anyone would want. It's important to the narrative and it's important to Wei Wuxian.

2) Back at the Burial Mounds Wei Wuxian was a fun big brother type who did a lot of babysitting of a kid who was being raised by a whole Wen family community on account of his parents being brutally killed. Then A-Yuan was taken in by the Lans and became a Lan; by the end of canon he knows he is also a Wen and is going to go honor his birth family. It's Hella Complicated, and everyone in the story knows and understands that it's complicated, and I'm not crazy about canon-setting interpretations that squish it down into "Wei Wuxian is his dad" because I don't think that's how the situation would read to any of the characters involved or the people around them. Wei Wuxian is extremely important in his life and going forward will have a father-like role, and that's awesome; and Lan Sizhui will continue to be a Lan and also a Wen, and that's awesome too.

Anyway, I feel like it's a cultural setting where in general it’s a lot more normal for someone to be taken in by a family in some capacity--servant? foster kid?--and for everyone to have a nuanced understanding that they have ties to this family and also to their blood ancestors.* In modern AUs you have a whole different set of circumstances going on and that's totally fine and cool.

(Speaking of totally fine and cool--going back to point one, I do also think that fatherhood is a big part of the story, and I love to bits all kinds of content with dads Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji.)

....Basically I bet someone more knowledgeable than me could write a whole thing about tensions between the collective family concept and the nuclear family concept in MDZS.
