Topological defects can trigger a transformation from insulating to conductive behavior in Mott materials
Researchers at Università Cattolica, Brescia campus, have discovered that the transition from insulating to conductive behavior in certain materials is driven by topological defects in the structure. Specifically, a study published in Nature Communications shows that so-called "Mott materials"—a type of insulator fundamentally different from conventional insulators, capable of switching from an insulating to a conductive state (a process known as "resistive switching")—can change state precisely due to topological defects in their crystal structure. This study, conducted specifically on a particular vanadium oxide (V₂O₃), reveals that these defects trigger this transition. The study was coordinated by Professor Claudio Giannetti, director of the Interdisciplinary Laboratories of Advanced Material Physics in the Department of Mathematics and Physics at the university. The study was carried out in collaboration with IMDEA Nanociencia, KU Leuven, SISSA, and Diamond Light Source.

Why Salt Water may be the Future of Batteries. There’s no shortage of solutions to the world’s need for renewable energy storage, but there is a shortage of accessible and cheap resources to use for those solutions. Lithium and vanadium aren't limitless, so what about regular, run-of-the-mill salt? Redox flow batteries, or RFBs, can exploit the abundance of elements like sodium and iron. One U.S. company already has salt water batteries ready to go, with at least two others developing iron flow variations built to effectively run on rust. They promise to last longer and be far cheaper than the competition. So, what happens if we go with the flow?

Promising strategy leverages atomic displacements to control quantum properties of a vanadate perovskite
Perovskites, materials with a crystal structure that mirrors that of the mineral calcium titanate CaTiO₃, exhibit properties that are advantageous for developing various technologies. For instance, they have proved promising for designing photovoltaic (PV) systems and electronic devices. Perovskites are also ideal materials to explore a variety of quantum states, including orbital order, magnetism and superconductivity. Moreover, physicists can carefully engineer these materials to unlock various tunable properties, which typically result from subtle deviations from the cubic perovskite structure. Realizing these deviations and controlling them to attain specific properties can be highly challenging. In a recent paper published in Nature Physics, researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research introduced a promising strategy to realize subtle atomic displacements in the vanadate perovskite YVO3.
