Chemical Safety: Osmium Tetroxide

An acutely toxic, corrosive, oxidizer, osmium tetroxide is a pale yellow solid used for a few select applications. Within the field of materials science and engineering, this includes its use as a staining agent for both polymers and transmission electron microscopy (albeit primarily for organic and biological materials). Chronic exposure can damage the kidneys and liver while acute exposure to the vapors can damage the eyes. It is recommended to store the chemical at lower temperatures (~2-8C) in glass containers and only use under proper ventilation, such as in a fume hood. Safety goggles over glasses are often required to protect from the vapors. Corn oil can be used to deactivate osmium tetroxide solutions, however the waste is still considered hazardous and should be handled accordingly.
