plz write a cute celebrini x fem reader 🙏🙏 ur writing is beyond amazing
oooh i've never written specifically for mack before so hopefully this isn't bad 😅
after mack’s face injury, his gf is quick to look after him once the game is done
masterlist
she waited impatiently near the doors of the locker room awaiting her boyfriend's arrival. y/n's mind couldn't stop replaying the horror on her features and everyone else's when they saw the blood trickle down macklin's face after a nasty high stick hit. she knew he was okay because he was right back on the ice once the bleeding stopped, but the image wouldn't shake the girl's brain.
lingering after the game felt so long this time around and y/n wondered if it was just because she was anxious about seeing her boyfriend and properly checking up on him. she swiped through twitter and instagram continuously while video replays of the rookie's hit filled her feeds. she just shut her phone off all together for now, not being able to watch the play anymore.
finally, the players began trickling out. y/n's head popped up, searching for the eyes of macklin in the crowd. she spotted him with will near the middle of the pack and he immediately found her gaze. will sensed that they probably wanted to talk, so he split off from the boy once they got closer, giving a small nod to y/n as he passed.
"hey," macklin began, but was caught off guard when y/n jumped into his arms.
"let me see it," she grabbed ahold of his chin, turning his face to the side to examine the new scar.
"it's really not that bad now. they cleared it up really good," the brunette tried reassuring his girlfriend knowing she probably had a hundred thoughts running through her.
"you scared the shit out of me when i saw all that blood. it looked a lot worse," y/n stepped back, arms crossing over her chest.
macklin frowned at the sudden distance between them, "i'm sorry, baby. i promise i'm fine. see?" he gave his best grin hoping to further prove how he was doing.
"well, if i see wilson, i'm gonna punch him myself," y/n huffed, looking around like she would catch the older player lingering somewhere.
macklin laughed, tugging y/n into his side and kissing the side of her head, "you're so cute when you're upset. i promise i'm fine though. i mean you saw me play afterwards."
"yeah you fucking power played. i guess that was your redemption," the two exchanged a laugh and macklin enjoyed finally pulling a smile from her.
"can i come back to your place tonight?" the boy wondered as they moved themselves closer to the exit.
"i thought that was a given already," y/n chuckled.
macklin went to tell will they were leaving before rushing out of the SAP center so he wouldn't have to do any press. most days he didn't mind, but tonight the boy was itching to get out of there and spend some much needed time with his girl. they hadn't seen each other since last weekend—school and hockey keeping them way too busy.
"just so you know, i am gonna baby you the whole night," y/n informed once they were securely in her car.
"mm, i can't wait. a face mask is just calling my name," the hockey player leaned back in the passenger seat, hand falling to the girl's lap as she pulled out of the parking lot.
luckily, there was no early morning practice tomorrow, so macklin was gonna use that to his full advantage and spend the night in y/n's dorm. the couple rode in comfortable silence into santa clara university, a convenient 7 minutes away from the arena so y/n never missed a home game.
she parked her car again and the couple hurried into her building. the few students wandering around the lobby caught sight of macklin's suit he put back on, a few of them recognizing him from as a sharks player and as y/n's boyfriend because he was over so much.
they lucked out with y/n's roommate hanging out with her own boyfriend tonight, so they had the whole dorm to themselves. macklin immediately thew his backpack onto the ground and shoved his suit jacket from his shoulders.
"gonna shower. i didn't really before we left. you're welcome to join me if you want," the brunette winked at the girl who flushed.
"wow, so classy of you. i did already shower this morning, so i'll have to pass this time," y/n laughed.
"damn, i thought you'd say yes. you sure you don't wanna shower again?" he winked again. y/n groaned, pushing her boyfriend to the bathroom.
"i'll be out here with your face mask."
the rookie accepted his lonely shower fate and disappeared into the bathroom. y/n took the opportunity to tidy up the room and get all the things she needed for their face masks.
20 minutes later, macklin came back out of the bathroom freshly showered and in more comfortable clothes. y/n hung up his suit jacket on the door of her closet, instructing him to do the same with the rest of the outfit so it wouldn't wrinkle.
the boy climbed into her bed a second later, positioning himself against her pillows, "i'm readyy," he sang.
"i've never known you to be so excited for a face mask," y/n grinned.
"it really makes my skin smooth, so i like it," the boy explained.
y/n handed mack her headband so his hair wouldn't be in his face or in the mask. he didn't hesitate to slip it over his head and expose his forehead. the girl giggled at the sight.
"are you laughing at my big forehead?" the boy raised his eyebrow, hands finding places on y/n's hips as she straddled his waist.
"maybe," she hummed, leaning forward to begin rubbing the cream on his skin.
mack admired her focused expression while just really taking the time to take in every part of her as she applied the mask. this was his favorite part of face masks because he could stare at her without shame and she hardly noticed because she was too focused on the mask.
"have i told you how beautiful you are?" the brunette wondered softly. he watched the way y/n's cheeks heated up into a deep blush.
"you have," she muttered.
"well, i'm gonna say it again. you're really beautiful," mack grinned.
"you're sappy tonight," y/n flushed.
"what? can i not say how beautiful my girlfriend is?"
"no, you can. thank you," she finished spreading the mask, leaning back to admire her work.
"how's it look?"
"great. i'lll let you know when five minutes are up," the girl set a timer on her phone and then mack grabbed the mask cream from her hands before she could set it back on the dresser.
she looked at her boyfriend quizzically.
"can i do yours?" he wondered with a soft expression.
y/n blushed again, "just don't get it in my hair."
"promise, i won't," macklin agreed and y/n let him have at it.
his touch was gentle as his fingers began rubbing around her skin. his lip poked out from his lips as he focused on doing it right. y/n loved how much he wanted to do it correctly for her sake and his expression really was just to die for.
"okay, did it," macklin leaned back to admire his work the same way y/n did. she loved the proud little smile on his lips, pulling her camera up to examine how well he did.
"wow, looks great, mack. your best one yet," y/n agreed.
"what can i say? practice makes perfect," the boy hummed, placing everything back onto her dresser.
"so how's your lip doing now?" y/n wondered as mack's hands wandered across the expanse of her hips and waist.
"i can't even feel it anymore, so good. i told you i'm fine," he eyed her.
"i know, just let me be a worry wart."
the sharks player smiled at her words knowing how much she liked to worry about things, especially the things that didn't need to be worried about. he reached up to quickly peck her lips, tryng to avoid getting face mask on one another.
"i love you," the brunette said.
y/n's smile grew, the whole i love you still new to them but heartwarming to hear, "i love you, too," she kissed him again and now they didn't care about getting face mask on one another.

In amidst the killing of a health insurance CEO in America, I just want to put out my 2 cents (for thankfully something I haven't seen just yet, but have seen and heard Americans talk about before).
Y'all's healthcare system sucks - doesn't really need to be said, but acknowledging this before going on to say, the grass is only slightly greener on this side of the pond.
In the UK, we have universal healthcare (NHS), but slowly privatisation has been creeping up on us. There are long wait times and people die on waiting lists. I'm currently on a waiting list for a potentially serious condition I'd rather not disclose and there's no end in sight for how long I'll be waiting. It could be years. I waited 2 years to be seen at the only gender clinic in my country (Wales) and have been a patient there for almost 3. The NHS is stretched beyond belief due to corporate greed and over a decade of Conservative cuts to NHS funding.
Worse, we elected a new government. Which isn't the Conservatives (yay) but is Labour (who, as of the last few years have been shifting rightwards from the centre). Who have also been toying with cuts for public services and tax breaks for the rich.
Basically, this is me reaching across the pond to say - we stand in solidarity with all of you who've been fucked over by your rotten healthcare system. And we hope you stand in solidarity with us as we struggle to navigate our beloved healthcare system that has been bled dry by Conservative greed. Collectively, we gotta demand change. America needs to demand universal healthcare. The UK needs to demand *functional* universal healthcare. And all of us need to fight back against corporate greed putting profit over people.
This has been a transatlantic psa.

its prosecutor jiang wanyin!!!! oh fuck!!! / gifs + au rambling below the cut / follow for more mdzs x aa crossover stuff :3
all the gifs i made (poses traced off franziska):
hes so similar to franziska when you think about it. theyre both deeply insecure tsundere adoptive younger sibling of successful main characters. who carry whips. something something edgeworth choosing death and wwx actually dying also
his share code is HWFEFF if you wanna use him in a trial! you can't share backgrounds but heres the scenery from the donghua i used.
the easiest way to put custom stuff into objection.lol is to send it in discord and then use the link from opening it in your browser :)
a whole lot of AU stuff
the art im making is for if mdzs was an ace attorney game, playing from WWX's POV to solve various mysteries/cases over the course of the plot. so this scene would be from turnabout goddess, which would loosely cover the dafan mountain mystery.
cases include:
Turnabout Revenge (Mo Manor, quick introductory first case)
Turnabout Goddess (Dafan mountain, the good times flashback)
Turnabout Saber (the man-eating castle (omg hiii nhs))
The Blind Turnabout (Yi City arc)
Turnabout Deviation (the Koi Tower conference, Empathy on NMJ ala turnabout memories or beginnings. opening cutscene is his qi deviation)
The Blood-Soaked Turnabout (second Burial Mounds siege, flashbacks: Xuanwu, Sunshot, YLLZ, Nightless City massacre)
Turnabout Lotus Seeds (testimony about JGY, tree scene, golden core reveal, bathtub scene. opening cutscene could be JGS' death but that would make it canon rather than ambiguous)
Turnabout Confession (Guanyin temple)
the problem with splitting novel!mdzs into turnabouts is that flashbacks are a huge chunk of the book but they don't have mysteries/ cases to solve so they've gotta be lumped together with present day stuff. imo? many of the flashbacks would likely have to be abridged so they could be retold ala DL-6, SL-9, or the fourth grade incident, where characters talk about it over some pieces of art. this is really difficult when theres a metric ton of unspoken, complex, and signifcant history between every character lmao
there's not as much of a problem with the cql timeline but i have not finished it. so.
the opening cutscenes in ace attorney always show the murder and/or the murderer plotting. the first cutscene of the game would be MXY summoning WWX, muttering about getting revenge on his family (it would also be good for him to mention the yllz being dead because that's how the novel starts.) cut to WWX's POV as he wakes up covered in blood and the investigation segment begins.
for investigations of monsters (goddess, saber, etc) the cutscene would be a scene of some poor throwaway cultivator getting their shit wrecked.
it would be cool to make a breakdown for JGY but again I need to review that scene cause I don't know who I'd base him on. maybe Vasquez or Dahlia.
tell me your thoughts!! i'm working off of a mdzs summary/ skimming the novel because i don't remember it too well so if i get anything wrong please yell at me
Jin Ling's sprites & Nie Huaisang's sprites / masterpost
#PLEAAAASE send it to me if you do actually use my animations in a case🥺#here im adapting mdzs to aa gameplay rather than making a mdzs AU where they are lawyers#so jiang cheng is not a prosecutor in this hes just angry. and on the right side of the screen#that man has not graduated law school but then again no one in ace attorney has either#the names are based off of how ace attorney cases are either named after a distinctive item/location (bigtop bridge samurai etc)#or the main emotional/character type thing that happens (goodbyes reminiscence farewell)#the mdzs/aa au where the stories get blended (ie my tags on the nhs post) is very interesting but i would have to think about it very hard#and i dont want to . i would rather think about what the court record would look like (its full of severed limbs)#MDZS' EXPLORATIONS OF MORALITY MAKE ME CHEW ON ROCKS#urrgh i got carried away writing this post & wrote a couple hundred words comparing aa and mdzs' attitudes towards morality & public opinio#i could write an essay on this topic tbh.#can i call this an au? its the same story in the same universe just in a different format. hmm#mdzs#aa#art#mo dao zu shi#ace attorney#grandmaster of demonic cultivation#cql#the untamed#jiang cheng#jin ling#objection.lol#flashing image tw#pixel art#animation#my art#franziska von karma#i guess??#mdzs aa au

Race Traits and Tendencies of the American Negro
-Frederick L Hoffman 1865-1946
This book is divided into a preface and these chapters:
Chapter 1: Population.
Chapter 2: Vital statistics.
Chapter 3: Anthropometry.
Chapter 4: Race amalgamation.
Chapter 5: Social conditions and tendencies.
Chapter 6: Economic condition and tendencies.
Chapter 7: Conclusion.
At the conclusion, the proto-fascist German American author #FrederickLHoffman writes this:
“Racial inferiority was the keynote of the pro-slavery argument. On the other hand, racial differences were explained away by those who saw in freedom the sure prospect of speedy amelioration of the lot of the southern slave ; yet thirty years of freedom in this country and nearly sixty in the West Indies have failed to accomplish the original purpose of the abolition of slavery, that is, the elevation of the colored race to the moral, mental and economic level of the white race.
Nothing is more clearly shown from this investigation than that the southern black man at the time of emancipation was healthy in body and cheerful in mind. He neither suffered inordinately from disease nor from impaired bodily vigor. His industrial capacities as a laborer were not of a low order, nor was the condition of servitude such as to produce in him morbid conditions favorable to mental disease, suicide, or intemperance. What are the conditions thirty years after ? The pages of this work give but one answer, an answer which is a most severe condemnation of modern attempts of superior races to lift inferior races to their own elevated position, an answer so full of meaning that it would seem criminal indifference on the part of a civilized people to ignore it. In the plain language of the facts brought together the colored race is shown to be on the downward grade, tending toward a condition in which matters will be worse than they are novr, when diseases will be more destructive, vital resistance still lower, when the number of births will fall below the deaths, and gradual extinction of the race take place."

I think that saying Naruto doesn’t understand love (like The Last appeared to suggest) is a bestial assumption that desecrates the entire plot of the original manga.
Another bullshit (but this could be simply me psychoanalysing the main character way too much) is Sakura being so shocked about Naruto comparison between Love and Ramen.
His definition is not “nosense” at all: for Naruto ramen is care, comfort, his favourite food ‘cause remembers him about Teuchi, who was one of the few people caring about his well-being during childhood. Ramen takes good memories and it’s his mother’s favourite food as well.
In Naruto’s mind, ramen is Home.
So I think is really cruel to underestimate this concept as stupid (but is not strange at all that is Sakura, the most insensitive character of the show, who tries to change his mind).
So, the fact that he has to “re-think” a new idea of love to understand his feelings for Hinata is hilarious. Despite the genjustu thing, this feeling seems totally artificial.
But ramen, obviously, is not the only reason. AT ALL.
I’ve disliked the film. And maybe the concepts that they had tried so hard to resemantize are the only things making sense in canon.
Naruto belongs with Sasuke, and this is not casualties and doesn’t need any resemantization. Never.
PS: English is not my native language AND I’m typing using a smaalll phone, so please don’t be a nazi-grammar. ✨
PPS: yes, resemantization is an actual word usually used in historical-semantic or anthropological field and semantic studies.

Does anybody else feel like mental health awareness has done very little to help them in material reality
#i was gonna say done nothing to help but that seemed too harsh#like there definitely is more knowledge about it now. maybe more people feel comfortable speaking about it which is good#but personally i don't feel that. like idk. workplaces will post about mental health awareness and then do nothing to help employees#the same w universities. my uni cut back the already meager mental health support#and then the government is doing absolutely fuck all as well#like idk im just back in a place i thought id gotten out of long ago and i still don't feel comfortable talking about it with people#maybe that's a me problem or maybe it's cultural or something idk. but in the 10 years ive been depressed (🫠) i don't think it's gotten a#whole lot better. teenagers are still dealing with the same shit i did and they're still not being taken seriously#women's mental health is not even spoken about.....anxiety depression sh eds etc are still ignored or seen as hysterical behaviour in women#or just normal esp with disordered eating. society hasn't changed people still want women to be stick thin and weak#like i know 10 years is a short time and there has been massive improvements in mh awareness if we look back over the past 50+ years#but idk i just think that it hasn't gotten better for a lot of people#i think specifically of belfast and like god. the amount of trauma there is the amount of homelessness the amount of substance abuse#drug abuse in particular that has gotten visibly worse over the past decade or so*#and i connect the dots n see the 2008 recession + a tory gov defunding the nhs + dehumanisation of homeless people & addicts + the troubles#+ ptsd + generational trauma + a negative peace + classism + paramilitary drug dealers + parties linked to those paramilitaries#and its like hmmmm i think we live in a society. and a mental health approach based on individual actions like journaling and meditation#isn't the way to go. or at least is not the be all and end all which is what a lot of mental health awareness raising seems to promote#*visibly worse on the streets. it was always a problem ofc but even a decade ago my parents never imagined it would be as bad as it is now#and it's become so normalised. i do think there's less individualism here than there seems to be elsewhere which can be good and can be bad#but i think we are becoming more and more individualistic. slowly. there's still a sense of community here but i do think it's changing#and callousness towards homeless people is one of the most obvious examples of this.#love when i put a wee asterisk in the tags of a post. like i have A Lot To Say lol

This is Leela Ravani. Rose's cousin who moved to the UK from New Delhi, India. She is a Graduate of the University of London and is currently working with Ellie at the Hospital in Cardiff and Newtown. She spent a few years working at a clinic in India when she was of Legal age to begin a career in India. Following that, she went on a flight with British Airways to London and that was where she said it was time. At her Graduation, her cousin was the guest speaker at the Ceremony for the University of London and she presented Leela with a special surprise. Because India does not Recognize Dual Citizenship, Leela went to a Courthouse to make this official before Rose presented the Certificate of British Citizenship to her cousin. Leela is a Doctor in Paediatrics and works part time in A&E, Critical Care, and Urgent Care. Sometimes, she helps Ellie at the Pontypandy Fire Station.
On the left is Leela before she left India, and on the Right is when Leela graduated College and got a job with the NHS.

Why the UK is so concerned about schools and public buildings
British politics has returned from the summer obsessed with one apparently unlikely subject – concrete. Fears over the safety of reinforced autoclave aerated concrete, or Raac, have closed schools in England and more buildings could follow.
So what is reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete, or Raac, and why is it suddenly so prominent? To get to grips with this issue, check out the Guardian's Crumbling concrete: why the UK is so concerned about schools and public buildings and the UK’s school buildings failure goes back decades by the Financial Times.
The Royal College of Nursing has also warned that emergency plans should be shared with staff and employers should immediately assess any risk of buildings collapsing. It comes after it was revealed that dozens of NHS buildings and hospitals in England contain the “weaker” reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC).
“Nursing staff and patients deserve to feel safe and will be alarmed at this letter warning trusts to get ready to evacuate hospitals if they are at risk of collapse. Staff must be properly briefed by their employer and provided with relevant information concerning their place of work. Employers have a legal duty to make sure staff, and others who could be affected, such as patients and visitors, are safe."
While we're on the subject of buildings in Britain, The Morning Star are reporting that nearly 5,000 people in Britain died last year due to damp and cold homes. The End Fuel Poverty Coalition have calculated that of the 21,890 excess winter deaths in 2022-23, 21.5 per cent were caused by people living in cold homes.

WIP Wednesday Things-I'm-Working-On Thursday
(once again it's after midnight so I'm actually technically posting this on 'fuck-it's-already-Friday' but you know what? I don't care lol)
Back on Jin Guangyao's birthday I thought about writing something in the Modern Sunshot AU universe (I really just can't stop thinking about pre-fic Nieyao in that AU, they're so important to me T-T) so I started to write what I thought was going to be another shameless excuse to write emotional smut for them, but then I lost interest about 1000 words in and decided meh. So I abandoned this idea but here's what exists of it anyway, might as well put it out into the world (completely unedited tho so be warned haha)
--//--
Meng Yao’s general opinion of birthdays is…neutral, at best. He’s never really had the time for them, nor really the inclination to celebrate them after Meng Shi had died. She used to push him to do something for them, either bake him a little cake or some cookies or something for them to share after dinner. She’d make him something nice, something that took more time than she probably should have spent for something trivial, but it had at least made the day kind of special even if he didn’t have any friends to celebrate with like the rest of the kids he saw.
His first birthday after her death had been the day he’d gone to confront his father and ask for his support, and it had been the day he’d learned his father’s house has a long, luxurious, marble staircase that’s quite painful to be thrown down.
He doesn’t celebrate his birthdays anymore, and would honestly like to forget he even has one in the first place.
The good thing about being wildly unpopular at work is that no one seems to think twice about the fact that he’s been working for Nie Mingjue for years and never once has the non-occasion registered with any of his coworkers. Meng Yao is polite and efficient, but that doesn’t translate to popularity, or anyone deciding they’re curious about his life, and Meng Yao would really like to keep things that way.
Still — as much as he wishes the day could be just like any other, his head for details simply will not let him ever forget, which inevitably means he’s also incapable of forgetting why he has every reason to detest late February, even more so than the fact that everyone hates February.
Meng Yao just keeps his head down and works like usual through the day — a Monday this year, which somehow feels like it’s adding insult to injury. He’s swamped all day long with phone calls, emails, the usual, plus unexpected interruptions in the form of everyone within a three-floor radius, it seems, dropping in to lay a new task or tidbit of information at his feet. Meng Yao takes it all in stride, arranging appointments and meetings and setting reminder after reminder to ensure there’s not a single deadline missed.
By the end of the day he feels wrung out, emotionally and physically drained, but he does his best to hide it as the office empties out in a steady trickle outside his half-open door.
“Yao-ge!” Nie Huaisang calls from his office down the hall. Meng Yao isn’t really sure why Nie Huaisang has decided to adopt him as some sort of elder brother figure when Meng Yao is fairly certain they’re of a similar age, but his stupid traitorously soft heart lifts a little every time Nie Huaisang calls for him so familiarly, and he can’t quite bring himself to tell the other man to stop.
“What is it, Huaisang?” he calls back, still a bit too uncertain of his standing with the Nie brothers to attempt using a nickname in response.
“Da-ge said if I leave I have to bring him some dinner since he’s working late, do you want some, too?”
Meng Yao begins meticulously closing every tab he has open before he can think twice about it (or the headache beginning to bloom behind his eyebrows).
“Yes please, thank you,” he calls back on autopilot. His hands are steady as he snaps his planner shut to tuck neatly down into his bag at his feet.
Nie Huaisang says something about Thai food that Meng Yao doesn’t listen to all that closely. He continues tidying and straightening his already-immaculate desk until he hears Nie Huaisang’s lazy shuffling footsteps heading for the elevator, and only then does Meng Yao slide his chair back and get to his feet with a crisp tug on the hem of his sweater to straighten it.
The only verb that really captures the energy with which he approaches Nie Mingjue’s office is ‘march’. Meng Yao marches to Nie Mingjue’s office with a distinct purpose, and it only takes one glance from Nie Mingjue for Meng Yao to see he understands what’s about to happen.
Meng Yao is exhausted and slightly miserable, and when Nie Mingjue shoves his chair back just enough Meng Yao once again marches across the distance between them to settle himself in Nie Mingjue’s lap as if he belongs there. The edge of the desk digs into his ass and Nie Mingjue has to hold him up by the waist as he readjusts his legs so his knees aren’t digging into the arms of Nie Mingjue’s very nice (if creaky) leather chair, and Meng Yao feels the stupid pointless ridiculous ache in his chest that this awful day always gives him finally start to recede.
“A-Yao —?”
Meng Yao shakes his head quickly and leans in to capture Nie Mingjue’s lips with his own, startled by the way his eyes start to sting at the thought of Nie Mingjue asking him if he’s alright. He doesn’t want to think, he doesn’t want to do or be anything except a little selfish. People do that on their birthdays, don’t they? Claim special privileges, ask for things that they want but don’t really need, demand to be taken care of? Meng Yao can’t really do any of that, but he already knows Nie Mingjue likes this much at least, so it’s not so bad to want it, is it?
He’s pretty sure birthday sex is a thing, and if it’s not then he’ll be that little bit selfish and want it anyway. Nie Mingjue’s hands wrap nearly all the way around his waist when he finally gets with the program, so Meng Yao rewards him with a sharp nip that instantly coaxes him into docility in a way that would likely surprise anyone else who knows him. Only Meng Yao gets to see that tough, unyielding, bullheaded Nie Mingjue is so easy to push down into somewhere soft and pliable.
#the untamed fanfic#WIP Wednesday#Nieyao#modern au#Meng Yao#Nie Mingjue#Nie Huaisang#and then they had rough office sex and NHS definitely knew not to come back with dinner#like he just straight up went home he knew as soon as he told MY that NMJ was staying late they'd do the do#blatantly using that as an excuse to just go on home and not bother with dinner 😂#he's an opportunist#I should also say that I set this veeeery loosely in my modern sunshot au (pre-fic of course)#but I didn't think at all about like. timelines or anything#and obviously the details are so sparse it barely even matters#think of it like the la croix of settings lol#it's vaguely flavored like the All Dreams universe

A maternity hospital received a low grade on a diversity assessment because staff only use the term “mother” when discussing maternity leave, The Telegraph can disclose.
The Cambridge University Hospital Trust, which manages a maternity hospital called the Rosie, lost points because staff use the term “mother” when referring to the policies it had in place regarding paid leave, instead of broadening it to include gender-neutral alternatives.
The report was carried out by the NHS’ “Rainbow Badge” scheme, which assesses hospitals based on how they treat LGBT patients.
The trust also lost points for not providing staff with guidance on what trans and non-binary employees should wear, pointing out how the trust’s “trans inclusion policy” did not provide “guidance on the dress code for trans employees, including non-binary employees.”
The report also flagged a “cause for concern” about a deluge of comments from staff criticising the trust’s inclusivity efforts for “virtue signaling” instead of providing care, including one comment which said: “We cannot waste taxpayers’ money on tokenism.”
The report said: “0 points were awarded for the Maternity Leave Policy. The policy does not have an inclusion statement to make clear that it applies to all irrespective of gender/gender of partner etc. The policy also refers to “mother” without expanding to include gender-neutral/inclusive terms and only uses he/she pronouns throughout.”
‘I just want to live my life’
One member of staff who said he was gay is cited calling the Rainbow Badge “insulting.”
They wrote: “I feel it is excessive - I just want to live my life; I don’t want to be asked; I don’t want my identity reduced to a label. I am tired of it - I just want to live my life like everyone else.”
Another said: “Rainbow badges are just performative; I would prefer all staff be properly trained and supportive to all needs, not singling out one or two.”
Another wrote: “I am gravely concerned about the influence on the NHS of organisations like Mermaids and Stonewall. I am concerned about the protection of single-sex spaces like hospital wards.
“I am concerned that men are being allowed to self-ID into women’s protected single-sex spaces, and the serious safeguarding risk this poses. I am concerned that this is all being ignored in favor of mindless virtue signaling like this latest ‘NHS Rainbow’ scheme.”
The report recommended that hospital staff “signal” to patients that they are LGBT inclusive by introducing themselves to patients with their pronouns and putting sanitary products in all toilets.
The report, however, did praise aspects of the trust’s approach to inclusion that were already in place.
It endorsed the fact that the group tasked with hiring senior staff has to include a “Diversity Inclusion Panellist” with “lived experience of a protected characteristic” whose role is to ensure that the staff carry out hiring processes “fairly.”
It also commended how the hospitals set “inclusion-based objectives” to senior managers as part of their annual appraisal.
The “Rainbow Badge” initiative began as a physical badge launched by Evelina London’s Children’s Hospital in February 2019 that staff could wear to show they are aware of the issues LGBT people face in the NHS.
Matt Hancock supported the scheme as health secretary.

In 2021, the “Rainbow Badge” went from a physical symbol to a nationwide scheme that assesses hospitals based on how they treated LGBT staff by placing them on a scale between gold, silver, and bronze.
The report on the Cambridge University Hospital trust received the lowest possible grade, referred to as “initial stage,” meaning it failed to even qualify for the “bronze” award.
The scheme is commissioned by NHS England but run by trans rights groups, including Stonewall and the LGBT Foundation, who carry out the grading.
In August, it was revealed that 77 trusts have signed up for the scheme.
The Cambridge University Hospital Trust declined to comment.
