Yonas had all but given up hope of reaching European shores when he was approached by a Sudanese man, who gave his name as Ali, at a street market in Cairo. Yonas told him his story. Ali said that he knew a way that Yonas could pay back all his debts and secure a place on a more reliable fishing vessel crossing from Egypt to Italy. He told Yonas he could sell his kidney, make a lot of money and save a life in the process.
Yonas had his doubts. But he had amassed significant debts trying to cross the Mediterranean and he was coming under pressure to pay back friends, family and moneylenders. “This is the last thing you want to do,” he explained. “But for me there was no other way.” Ali, the broker, was personable and seemed genuine. Yonas agreed to the deal. He was promised $10,000 for his kidney. The money, he hoped, would be enough to cover his debts and pay for his onward journey across the Mediterranean.
The surgery took place at a medical facility near Alexandria in November 2018. “I remember waking up and feeling confused,” said Yonas. The first thing Yonas he was aware of was a buzzing noise coming from a loose lightbulb, like the sound of a trapped insect. Next came pain, then fear, panic, anger. “I was shouting as loud as I could. I just wanted to get out of there.” Yonas rolled over and vomited on to the floor.
Hours passed. Finally the door opened and a man holding a clipboard came in. The man told that Ali would be coming soon, at which point he could leave. He handed Yonas two painkillers and a glass of water, and slid out the door before Yonas could ask any questions.
When Ali finally appeared, he told Yonas to get dressed. His voice was hard, all his old charm now gone. A nurse removed the drip attached to Yonas’s hand and two heavy-set men escorted him back to the car. Yonas spent the next two weeks in an apartment in Cairo convalescing. He was closely monitored, in case he should decide to leave the apartment. They did not want him to attract attention. If someone were to see him, they might report his presence to the police. Best to keep him hidden while he healed.
Yonas had been promised $10,000, but he was given just $6,000 in notes. This would just about pay off his existing debts, but it was not enough to cover the cost of smugglers’ fees ($3,500) for the next stage of his journey, across the Mediterranean. Yonas went to the police and reported Ali for trafficking. He was trying to explain that he had been deceived into selling a kidney when another officer entered the room. The second officer informed Yonas that it was a criminal offence to sell a kidney. He took out a notebook and asked Yonas for his identification papers. Yonas fumbled in his pockets, searching for documents he knew he didn’t have.
The officers joked that Yonas didn’t look like an Egyptian, remarking on his dark skin and curly hair. If he was a refugee, they suggested, he should go and complain to the UNHCR. But maybe he wasn’t a refugee. Maybe he was an illegal migrant. The second officer reminded Yonas he could be arrested or deported for failing to produce his identification papers.
Yonas was regretting going to the police. He looked around, nervously waiting for someone to speak. The second officer smiled scornfully and told him to leave.

What's not being said in Britain's debate on the "small boat" crossings
Tumblr media
The European Union states; "human trafficking is a highly lucrative business with a lower risk of detection for perpetrators than many other forms of crime. Globally, traffickers make estimated profits of €29.4 billion in a single year."
"The victims have no trust in the support services around them, in the police or in themselves. They think they are not taken seriously and that they are culprits rather than victims", said Merel Van Groningen, a human trafficking survivor.
LET'S EXPLORE THE ISSUES INVOLVED
"Why spend $10,000 USD on getting married, when you can spend it on getting out?" This was the question posed in a Reuters article in 2021.
Reoccurring conflict and the natural desire for a better life, left one Kurdish town in a situation, where people were paying up to $12,000 to get smuggled into Europe.
One Iraqi Kurdish smuggler in Shiladze said he had arranged the trip for about 200 people but a local journalist said it could be as high as 400 people.
TIME FOR A MORE HONEST DEBATE?
In March, a human trafficker spoke direct to Sky News on how people make it to Britain on small boats, claiming "smugglers are just doing business".
"If there are too many migrants, the prices go up"…"from €500 to €2,500" and "if there aren't enough people then the prices drop". "Different nationalities also affect the prices."
According to the interview, "three-quarters of the smugglers are in Britain" and "the money they make, they invest in business there."

The UK-Rwanda Refugee Arrangement - The Principle of the Thing
Author’s note: This is a paper I wrote in May 2021 for my refugee law class on the – you guessed it – UK-Rwanda refugee arrangement. As a result, its rather more academic than most of the material on here, but I find it interesting anyway, and I had a bunch of fun writing it. It was supposed to be published, but I was too busy arguing at the ICC Moot Court at the time, and it is now outdated.…

47th Regular Meeting of the United Nations Task Force on the Social and Solidarity Economy.
Tumblr media
Led by the Co-Chairs of the UNTFSSE, Simel Esim from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Chantal Line Carpentier from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the virtual gathering brought together representatives from Members (UN Entities and the OECD) and Observer organizations to share international and regional updates to spur further collaboration on the SSE.
The call began with a welcome to the representatives of new Members, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) as an Observer.
Heidi Christ, lead of Made51 at UNHCR, expressed recommitment towards the task force, noting that, “Livelihoods for refugees is of primary concern to UNHCR, especially as the the refugee crisis deepens and longer-term solutions are needed. We are looking at the solidarity economy as way to offer solutions to refugees in a more protective environment”.
Leida Rijnhout, Chief Executive, WFTO, was appreciative of the positive response received from Members and Observers regarding their joining the task force. She highlighted the link between the SSE and the Fair Trade movement, sharing that “At the WFTO, we certify enterprises based on the fair trade principles. We are also a movement of entrepreneurial activists that promote people and planet over profit.”
Following introductions and general updates, the Co-Chairs presented the new UNTFSSE Action Plan, which details priorities and responsibilities for advancing the SSE agenda and implementing the UNGA Resolution A/RES/77/281. This plan, designed to foster policy coherence, drive capacity building, improve statistics, and increase access to finance, underscores the task force's strategic approach to mobilizing collective expertise and resources.
Further discussions focused on institutionalizing UNTFSSE governance through a newly drafted Terms of Reference and preparation of the Secretary General’s report for the UNGA 79th session. The Secretariat is currently collecting inputs from UN Entities, Member States, and Financial Institutions.
Technical Working Groups are currently being established on SSE Statistics and Financing. These groups will be composed of technical experts who will establish work plans and present updates to the task force at regular meetings. Highlights of recent and upcoming initiatives were shared by task force Members and Observers, including:
ILO’s Regional Conference on the Social and Solidarity Economy for Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals in Asia on May 14-15, 2024.
OECD’s Global Action on Mapping of Social Economy Ecosystems.
UNRISD’s four podcast episodes, interviewing authors from the SSE Encyclopedia.
Social Economy Europe’s EU Large Scale partnership for Skills of SE and Proximity Ecosystem.
DIESIS event on the Social Economy in the Western Balkans under the MESMER+ project.
CIRIEC Call for papers for a Special Issue of APCE on “Gender approaches of Social Economy and State-Owned Enterprises”.
EUCLID’s Women in Social Enterprise initiative.
Ms. Esim proposed to hold an online event to mark the occasion of the first year anniversary of the UN General Assembly resolution “Promoting the Social and Solidarity Economy for Sustainable Development” on April 18, 2024. She suggested this would be an occasion to highlight progress that has been made in the one year since the adoption of the resolution at the international and regional levels. Her proposal was well received by Members and Observers of the Task Force. It was agreed that the webinar would take place on April 18, 2024 from 1:30 – 2:45 pm CEST with presentations followed by a brief discussion. The ILO offered to make simultaneous translation available for the event in English, French and Spanish. The UNTFSSE Members and observers agreed to share the announcement and the Zoom link for the event widely.

Hey everyone, given the recent news and all, I imagine some people might be considering leaving the country if the hostility aimed towards and the loss of rights of women and the LGBT+ community keeps on increasing during this second Trump presidency. Immigration is an extremely bureaucratic process in most countries, though, so if I could suggest a potential alternative, easier way out of the US if it ever comes to a point where such a thing would be needed, Brazil, my home country, is particularly friendly and considered a “model country” when it comes to our laws regarding requests of asylum. For example, people who apply for a refugee status in Brazil:
 • Have a very good chance of being granted it. Just last year, over 77 000 people were granted asylum in Brazil [1]
 • Are almost never under the risk of being deported, even if they came to Brazil under unregulated means and/or under fake documents [2]
 • Have the benefit of a very straightforward, 100% free of charge process to apply for asylum that doesn’t require a lawyer and can be done almost fully online through filling a form on a website, with the exception of getting a physical copy of your application process at the nearest federal police station [3] and
 • While getting an official refugee status can take a long time (sometimes up to two years in certain cases), just by being officially registered as being in the process of obtaining said status, asylum-seekers have the right to obtain “temporary” valid Brazilian IDs, a legal work permit and also are granted rights identical to those of Brazilian citizens, such as the right to free education, free healthcare, and social assistance. Apart from having to renew those documents once a year, these privileges are never revoked [4]
Most importantly though, the Brazilian Refugee law of 1997 defines a person eligible to obtain refugee status as being, between other criteria, someone who
“has well-founded fears of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, social group or political opinions, finds themselves outside their country of nationality and is unable or unwilling to seek the protection of that country” [5] which includes members of the LGBT+ community, as it’s explicitly stated in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees website that
“Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people may be eligible for refugee status [in Brazil] on the grounds of persecution due to membership in a particular social group. UNHCR recommends that people who are subject to harm, inhuman treatment or serious discrimination because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or intersex status and whose governments are unable or unwilling to protect them should be granted refugee status.” [6]
To sum it up… if things escalate to the point where you feel like you’d be safer leaving the US than staying in it, Brazil is one country that would welcome you practically immediately. Tumblr tends to bury posts with links so I’ll add sources on a reblog, along with more information.

Just as a reminder as I've just noticed myself - arab.org has more pages to support on
In case you're unfamiliar with how this site works, it confirms ad revenue via your clicks, which allows them to donate money to various funds
These go to:
Children -> UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund)
Fight Poverty -> UNDP (United Nations Development Programme)
Environment -> Greenpeace MENA (Middle East and North Africa)
Palestine -> UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency [for Palestine Refugees in the Near East])
Refugees -> UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees)
Women -> UN Women
Do more with your daily clicks! You can help each one once per individual (perhaps per IP address?) per day, letting you help out with six things at once?
US-specific advice for helping Palestine below cut.
Side note I'm keeping beneath the cut since it's relevant to US folks only: if you're really determined to help Palestine, vote for Dr. Cornel West, Ph.D. for President of the United States.
He's the most openly vocal about a free Palestine and is the only candidate who has demonstrably shown he is the most committed and prepared to immediately cease US support to Israel.
Joe Biden isn't going to cave if he gets re-elected. We all know that. Voting third party is a lot less risky than you've been taught - the two party system can replace one or both parties with new parties if they lose public favour.
We have both the people and the ability to unseat the Democratic party and install Socialism, and between Socialism and Republicans, Socialism is going to lock in place immediately and become the dominant political force in America.
Cornel West's Platform
Cornel West's Volunteer Events
Cornel West's Ballot Access Tracker and Ballot Access Plans
Tumblr thread I have of Primary/Caucus polling dates in the US (includes US territories)
Not on your Primary/Caucus ballot? Write-in, "Cornel West," on your ballot, or urge your Caucus representatives to do the same.
In a state where it's difficult for Independent candidates to get ballot access? Dr. Cornel West, Ph.D. thought ahead and has created a new party for those states called the Justice for All Party.
(Addendum: Claudia de la Cruz is not a viable alternative. The Party for Socialism and Liberation has a Conservative 5th Column and has frequent issues with discrimination.)
Free Palestine. Vote for Cornel West.

How many people in the world are stateless?
Millions of people around the world are denied the basic rights and protections of citizenship. According to UNHCR, by the end of 2023, there were 4,4 million stateless and of undetermined nationality. However, this figure is likely much lower than the actual number due to difficulties in data collection and the fact that stateless persons often go unnoticed in national statistical surveys. Stateless persons who are not recognized as nationals of any country are deprived of rights and access to basic services, making them politically and economically marginalized and vulnerable to discrimination and exploitation, according to UNHCR.

Lebanon’s transport minister, Ali Hamieh, said Israeli bombing put a second border crossing between the country and Syria out of service -
leaving one official passage between the two nations operational. The UN refugee agency (Unhcr) warned that Israel’s overnight airstrike on the Jousieh crossing in Lebanon’s northern Bekaa area jeopardised the main escape route for people fleeing the conflict in Lebanon in search of refuge in Syria. More than half a million people, mostly Syrians, had crossed into Syrian territory since Israel began heavily striking Lebanon late last month, according to figures by the Lebanese authorities on Friday.
