Coral-friendly sunscreen shown to provide better UV protection than existing options
Researchers have developed a prototype for coral-reef-friendly sunscreens by using polymerization to create large molecules that still block UV radiation but are too big to penetrate our skin, coral, and algae. The polymeric UV filter, presented in the journal Cell Reports Physical Sciences, was more effective at preventing sunburn in mice than existing sunscreens.
"This is an initial exploration of a new strategy to design bio-friendly and coral-friendly polymeric UV filters," says senior author Lei Tao, a chemist at Tsinghua University. "We hope this leads to the next generation of sunscreens."
Tao was inspired to explore environmentally friendly sunscreens after visiting the Great Barrier Reef in 2010. "I was blown away by the beautiful coral, and ever since I learnt that sunscreen is one of the causes of coral bleaching, I kept thinking about ways to develop a coral-friendly sunscreen."

Utik
The utik (yoo-tik) are a sophont species the rakii came in contact with when they first landed on Ra'hah, their second largest moon orbiting Rek. The utik were actually the first to even set foot onto it, as they had no other choice. After suffering massive damage to their ship, the utik were forced to land on the lunar surface and hope to survive or await help. Years later, the rakii show up, which started an a long, chaotic process of attempt of communication and debating ownership.
The bodies of the utik are actually not their true bodies. The actual sophont lies within the pearly cased cockpit. Utik like the Olac bio-mechs, mastered the technical art of bio-technology, having started on a very hot and humid planet. While unlike the Olac who switched to bio-technology as a means to evade a debilitating disease, the utik mastered it for years, working off various symbiotic organisms. Their mech suits, or cyborg bodies you could say are symbiotic, as after their nervous and circulatory systems are linked, the pilot has full control of the suit, having it feed off waste material from the pilot. The suit then takes the waste, replenishes it, mixes it's own formula into it and feeds it back to the pilot. Like a plant, it gets a lot of energy off light and other forms of UV Retaining it for hours. These suits are suitable (ha) for open space, and lunar terran for a limited time. However proper measures are made to keep the suits tidy from "space dust" so no one goes out "naked" and risk exterior damage.

However, this isn't their true form. At least they didn't start off like this.
Way before, after they reached the ultimate feat in their development, their star was noticeably suffering, as it was predicted to eventually turn into black hole. While they had years 'till then, there wasn't enough time to perfect their original forms for the long-term space travel. So. as best they could, they learned to carefully strip and reduce themselves to nothing more than squishy muscle and brain matter, beforehand creating living space suits and sleeper pods to maintain what's left. Several ships shot into space just in time before their star went dark and each ship jumped in different directions hoping to find and terraform a new world. This group of utik weren't so lucky, as said before.
Now for the first half of the year, rakii and utik were on some tense terms. A lot of internal debates on who gets the moon. While utik were capable of defense, they weren't in a great position to, and the rakii weren't sure how to proceed with their first extraterrestrial contact. (Non-religious turned contact I'd guess???) UNTIL, one day it was brought ahead that, the utik secrete an anti-radiation slime. Something they came with naturally, just cranked to 10.
At first, the rakii thought to use this fluid as an applicable substance similar to sun-block, required to apply pre-spaceflight. However, it was revealed that they are extremely allergic to it. So skin-contact was a big no.
(Unfortunate rakii subject applying utik-based lotion. Results: swelling in skin, which can further cause blisters and splits)
After several trials, they came to a conclusion of using it as a gel layering in space suits, capable of absorbing radiation and protecting the wearer.
This discovery brought up a plan and a deal. It was agreed, rakii and utik would share the moon, making their first ever alliance, in exchange the utik would allow the rakii to harvest this anti-radiation goop off them, of course while exchanging knowledge, and resources.

Viktor was never one to catch feelings easily, but when you came into his life from being a good friend of Jayce, he began to feel something new.
When Jayce introduced you to him, he didn’t know how to react to your bubbly air headed nature, it was new. Sure, Jayce is charismatic, but he didn’t shine as bright as you did, you could light up the whole room with a personality like that.
Maybe you weren’t the smartest, but you were an amazing listener, and things didn’t seem to get to you very often. Usually just in one ear and out the other, but when you were interested, your body language changed, anyone could tell you were paying attention, even if you usually didn’t fully understand.
You’d turn yourself towards him and lean in again or prop your elbows on the table and put your chin in your hands, kicking your feet a bit, and it was when you would ask most of the questions.
“What’s that?”
“What, a Hex Core?”
“Mhm! I dunno what that is, Sorry.”
“No need to apologize, I understand not everyone has the same knowledge. Ehh, a Hex Core is an adaptive rune matrix with Hextech in the middle…the potential for ultimate advancements in technology!”
“ohhh!… what?? I dunno what that stuff is either, i mean, i know what runes are but…what’s…all the other stuff??”
Viktor took a minute, how would he explain this without making you feel like you had less and less knowledge? He would never want to hurt your feelings, you were too pretty to be sad.
“Hextech uses magic to create artifacts, it’s made up of a special crystal. It can do all kinds of things, not just for me and the hexcore is full of hextech, which means it has all kinds of that magic.”
“Sounds like a lot of math, which i’m not good at. I think I’ll stick to less complex things and let you handle all of that genius people stuff”
You were really the only person who could distract him from his work. He had completely forgotten about the papers in front of him, his focus was on you, even if the papers were the thing you asked about. He realized he doesn’t ever really ask any questions that he had for you
“May I ask you an…odd question?”
“hm, of course! just make sure it’s not too complicated of a question? really big words get me all confused…”
“Of course of course. Those nails of yours, are they real? like, your actual nail? they’re quite long.”
“What? god no, these are made with powder polymethylmethacrylate and a monomer liquid!”
You turned over you hand and tapped on the underside of your nails, Viktor was a little shocked from that long word you managed to string out describing the acrylic powder
“So…they are plastic?”
“Nope! You gotta put the liquid with a bit of the monomer and then put it on top of a guide, sometimes plastic? but I like to use my silicone one because it peels better, and thennn you put the whole thing under UV light for it to harden and they’re so much better than fake plastic nails! fake nails that are plastic feel so icky and come off WAYYY too easy. plus nail glue can fuck up your skin soooo bad!”
“ah, i see, so you know a lot about this topic?”
“Of course! if i’m gonna look pretty I have to be healthy and to be healthy i have to know what Im doing to my body! That’s why I like hate cOsMeTiC sUrGuRiEs cause like everyone is beautiful in their own way and the fact that people think they have to pay to be beautiful is really disgusting! everyone was made to grow differently, just because you don’t look like your neighbor or your pretty classmate doesn’t mean you aren’t pretty or attractive or perfect! But like Botox for headaches is fine, it helps with migraines!”
“I see you feel very strongly about these things, Is there a reason why? Perhaps a connection to memories in which it makes you upset about this topic?”
“Well…I just want everyone to be happy, you know? and if you hate yourself because you don’t look like everyone else…that’s not happy. The only thing that’s truly ugly or unattractive is the way we treat some people, and the awful things we say and do. Ugly doesn’t exist *on* people, it exists *in* people.”
You turned to Viktor after finishing a sentence, a small smile, the first real one you’ve seen, but you decided not to say anything, having an internal celebration instead of external. Celebratory of small victories(or should i say Viktories, okay yeah i’ll see myself out sorry), it was rare to see Viktor smile from what Jayce has told you.
“You are very different from me, and yet i enjoy the company you provide, it’s quite odd, with how different our knowledge is you’d think I would be annoyed with all your questions, but you also have knowledge I don’t. I do not look into what I wear or the lotions, soaps and sanitizers I put on my hands-”
You were quick to accidentally cut him off, suddenly remembering why you came to the lab in the first place, even when it slipped out on the way from your home to the lab.
“OHMYGOODNESS!! I tOTALLY forgot about that! Sorry, I didn’t mean to cut you off, but I wanted to say I got you some new soap because i was reading the ingredients and yours contained formaldehyde!! that’s probably why your hands are always so dry, that is so bad for your skin! I also got you some lotion because they’re so dry from that awful soap…”
You quickly dug through your purse, pulling out a large bottle of moisturizing hand soap and some hand lotion with aloe, quickly placing them on the desk
“I literally went to the market at like 8 this morning because I knew that’s when they first set up so like they weren’t all gone when I got there!”
“You did this for me?”
“pshhh, yeah! and i got my pet some more of those cute special treats, they only get sold like twice during the week and they’re all gone in like an hour. it’s so terrible if I can’t get my sleepy butt up in time to get some!”
“Are they truly that important?”
“Well, my pets are like…my family! they’re like my little babies and I would literally assault whoever the hell runs this universe for my babies?”
“I apologize, I was speaking about the soap.”
“Oh, oops! Yeah, I wanted to get you something nice, plus, all the really nice ones sell out so fast! Especially like when this huuuuge group of wives come through and buy like literally everything nice.”
"Group of...wives?"
"Yeah, like, you know, middle aged women who don't need so much damn soap?"
"Ah..."
he seemed to take a pause to think
"Why...for me? Why not for Jayce?" He asked, looking up at you
"What? Your hands are dry, Jayce doesn't have...all that as an issue...you know?"
He seemed surprised as he thought before laughing quietly
"How are you so sure what my hands feel like? I'm sure Jayce is very touchy...but you know, I am not."
You felt your face heat quickly
"Well, I- they sound dry! You know, when you rub your hands together and it sounds...dry, like you can't hear my hands unless I rub them together really hard!"
He chuckled softly at your embarrassment before standing
"I find it cute that you care. Thank you, Солнышко(sólnyshka)"

Greetings folks! Did somebody say fungus bots? its time to spore some trouble i guess :) ok it wasnt funny i get it.. Anyways meet with new fungus based biohybrid bot..

before i start to explain how its works lets take a look at its backstory shall we?
The idea was almost age old actually, experimentation of soft body robotics and bio robotics and today its reshape as we see biohybrid robotics with the search for more sustainable, self-healing, and biodegradable materials. Traditional robots are often made from synthetic materials and metals, which can be rigid, non-biodegradable, and challenging to repair. The researchers at Cornell University sought to overcome these limitations by integrating biological elements into robotic systems.
The team turned to mycelium, the root-like structure of fungi, which has the unique ability to grow, self-repair, and biodegrade. Mycelium is also known for its strength and flexibility, making it an ideal candidate for use in soft robotics. By embedding mycelium within a network of sensors and actuators, the researchers created a biohybrid bot capable of sensing its environment and responding to stimuli, all while being environmentally friendly.
This fungus bot represents a significant step towards more sustainable robotics, demonstrating how living organisms can be harnessed to create innovative and eco-friendly technologies. The research also opens up possibilities for robots that can grow, adapt, and repair themselves in ways that conventional robots cannot, potentially revolutionizing fields such as environmental monitoring, agriculture, and even healthcare.

Electricity (it seperates as fungus related electrical pulse and electricity waves from censors)
firstly lets start with fungus mycelium: Mycelia are the underground vegetative part of mushrooms, and they have a number of advantages. They can grow in harsh conditions. They also have the ability to sense chemical and biological signals and respond to multiple inputs. so basically its neural system that transfers certain commands of activities between root and fungus itself
its slug is basically fungus's cell system or actual biohybrid organism it this case
once mycelium gets affected by UV lights it generates small electricity pulses to slug system and when slugs gets electrocuted by these pulses it acts like a muscle basically and it causes the slug to move or contract its muscles to activate.
and once you figure out how you gonna shape its muscle system and house them carefully you will have a "biohybrid robot" as their terms
the reason im taking this now is it reminded me "Fungus Baby Experiments" which is an inside name for series of projects that been continued for a while after corona until now.. Simply, the goal was to create or adapt an organism to thrive in different environments and make sure these environments livable by humans in the future by manipulating with artificial and external factors. Google it :)

A tiny robot that could one day help doctors perform surgery was inspired by the incredible gripping ability of geckos and the efficient locomotion of inchworms.
The new robot, developed by engineers at the University of Waterloo, utilizes ultraviolet (UV) light and magnetic force to move on any surface, even up walls and across ceilings.
It is the first soft robot of its kind that doesn't require connection to an external power supply, enabling remote operation and versatility for potential applications such as assisting surgeons and searching otherwise inaccessible places.
"This work is the first time a holistic soft robot has climbed on inverted surfaces, advancing state-of-the-art soft robotics innovation," said Dr. Boxin Zhao, a professor of chemical engineering. "We are optimistic about its potential, with much more development, in several different fields."

Alright, so bear with me.
Humans have three cone cells in our eyes that are how we perceive color in the world. I often think red, green, and blue, but apparently people studying them use Long, Medium, and Short to be unambiguous (just for one example, if you activate M really strongly and not L or S, the color people report seeing is yellow-green). Each type activates at different strengths to different wavelengths of light. Here's a lovely graphic from Wikipedia showing response levels of each cone type to different wavelengths:
So you can see that if some light activates L some, but not M, we'll perceive deep red, activates them both a bit, we see orange or yellow, depending on the specific amount.
It's interesting that some effect (a specific mix of pigments, or some structural coloration) could be producing some mostly 495nm light, or a blend of some slightly higher and slightly lower wavelengths, and either way we see cyan. (And a good thing, too, otherwise our display technology would be extremely unconvincing.)
Of course, then there's what happens when we get activation of L and S at once, but not M, our eye-brain systems don't infer "yellow-green", because green is specifically what's missing from there: we generate magenta, a non-spectral color. (And when all three activate we get white, of course.)
I found myself thinking about birds, with their four cones.
They're more evenly spaced too, the bastards. (These bastards are specifically finches but I'm under the impression that most birds are similar.)
(Of course, "violet" actually means ultra-violet here. Look at the graphic, their UV cone stops responding where our S cone starts. I would edit this, but spent like half an hour discovering that tumblr doesn't support table under html or code/"preserve formatting" under markdown anymore; so you get a screencap of what I sent on discord.)
Birds could see "vio-green" (accepting name suggestions) as a color region as distinct from blue/indigo as green is from purple/magenta.
Look at that. Two whole ass independent spectral color divisions we don't have, and six non-spectral inferences. Eight whole categories of visual perception more than us. Decadent.
The heart quails to imagine what the 16 color receptors of a mantis shrimp would create. I mean, okay, it doesn't because we've studied their eyes and brains and they don't blend colors the way we do, smooshing them down to a much simpler set of perceptions.
But imagine if we rebuilt our eyes and brains for it! Color indicates chemistry, with that level of subtle blending of characteristics, would vision become like tasting everything we look at?

The Search for Civ
The meeting was quickly over. The Adastran wolves sure did like their discussions, especially the heated ones that end in nothing getting done (not like that was any different from home).
My 'sponsor' had spouted me up as an 'intelligent' pet servant, too which I still was unsure to take as an insult or compliment. While I know plenty about water infrastructure, I don't know what he was hoping to accomplish by having me remark about it.
I will admit, it's quite awesome. Treatment technology has developed so much that instead of large municipal plants, every small area has its own treatment unit no larger than a small car. But it was hard to look 'intelligent' when I seemed to only know the 'basics', even though I knew some pretty detailed facts.
Regardless, I seemed to at least impress a few of them, at least in the "huh, that thing isn't a simpleton" kinda way.
As everyone left in a heated disagreement about installing a new form of what I would call "UV" treatment, I continued to stare at the holo table. It baffled me: old roman stone style table with a simple curtain on it, but hovering in the air projecting from a roof light were holograms full of information. It was such a strange juxtaposition that never failed to impress me.
I quickly slid the screen to a star map, having easily located my home world for the hundredth time since arriving on Adastra. To the Adastrans, its classified as a low-concern world, not even given a name, just a designation: 78-54-36-ACAD, one that it seems no one wishes to study or uplift due to how far away it is, even though historical records show strange energy signals emanating from it. Even for my sponsor, his whole goal was get something (I always flinch at his use of 'something' instead of 'someone') from so far away that no one would ever realize. I also realized that the Adastrans don't have any 'magic' the way home does, which is probably what that signal is.
As I stared at the hologram of my home, I couldn't help but feel homesick. My sponsor had said I'd be home after a week, but its been several, and he seems no closer to returning me. Apparently, there's been an embargo on intergalactic travel, meaning who knows if I'll ever go home at this rate.
While he's been polite, it still doesn't fix the issue of my abduction. I've been able to distract myself frequently, from admiring their technology to swimming in their beautiful, almost untouched lakes. Heck, the attention from the citizens has been at least somewhat fun, their questions about where I'm from seem to keep me thinking positively of home, even though it just reminds me how far it is.
Regardless, I'm still stuck here. Everyday I get a bit more homesick, these oversize-feeling halls for the larger Adastrans making my already short stature feel even smaller. But it's not like I have any magic to even try and escape, nevermind if it even works here. I just wish there was a way to tell Lye and my work that I'm okay.
Now that I think of it, I wonder how hard Lye looked for me. I know she's a good mage, but to track me to the other side of the galaxy? Even that makes me wonder if she even had a chance to figure out what happened.
I'm gonna go take a swim to that lake island now. It's the only thing that'll hopefully cheer me up now that I've thought myself into a unpleasant mood.

How do the Rats sense increase/decrease as they get older? Does Chases bionic hearing hurt less or does modern technology fuck with the chips? Does Adam accidentally shoot out lasers more with the blue light/UV light thing?
so before douglas: yes their chips absolutely got fucked up by being in the world because donald couldn't safeguard them. he didn't know how bc he didn't build them. this also led to adam's eyes being permanently damaged due to his heat vision which is why he wears glasses as an adult
douglas upgraded and rewired their chips in s3 to help with that, but sometimes (mostly for chase's database) they do get fucked up with the different tech in the world
their chips were built in the late 90's I should add; so they didn't compensate well in the 2010s w/o dougie's help
that strain on their chips and bodies during missions without the total knowledge of what to do not only damaged adam's eyes, but started chase's chronic migraines and increased bree's uncontrollable twitches. bree had those before but they got worse. now that they're older those glitches are more controllable, but they're permanent unfortunately, because donald didn't have the means to properly protect the chips from stimulation like that
