need to shell out for a new laptop before the end of the year - for a lot of reasons but mainly bc support ending for win8.1 makes fixing the current beast rather pointless :/ (and. admittedly. there is a lot to fix. she's old and she has suffered.)
but my current beastie is from the last gen of laptops with a disc drive and the thought of using an external/usb disc drive is enough to make me cry tears of blood
#really though it is time to upgrade#and i hate to say it because she /runs/ fine it's all hardware issues w parts that can absolutely be replaced#but if i can't use it to run the programs i need then shelling out the money for those parts would ultimately be a waste#but also the fact that this machine that runs fine is no longer worth fixing bc some google-based bullshit just won't support win8.1 anymor#is ALSO a fucking waste & a pile of planned obsolescence bullshit! and i hate it!#but uh. even though she runs fine and she totally does. she does need. uh.#new keyboard (only 1/3 of keys work; currently use usb keyboard)#new trackpad ribbon cable (trackpad does not currently work; using external usb mouse)#new power button and connecting ribbon cable (turning it on involves opening it up and causing an intentional short-circuit every time.)#(a problem largely solved by simply never turning her completely off- except she also needs)#a new battery (current battery does not charge at all; machine needs to be constantly plugged in or it shuts down immediately)#...ok i might be the 'this is fine' dog about this#but i am still upset! that i will no longer have a disc drive inside my damn laptop.#that's the disc drive's natural habitat; that's where it should be; it's weird and offputting to have it connected via usb!#ack. why do tech companies fuck everything up.#and that's without getting into the way new devices offer less harddrive space so people will use the fucking cloud or whatever???#yeah sorry no i'm not using your goddamn data mining corporate off-site storage i want to keep my shit on my own goddamn machine#go to actual hell if you're trying to sell me a pc with less than at least 500GB of storage i swear to fuck#...in essence you could say the whole process is leaving me rather grumpy

everything was going fine. it was an easy mission really- go in, sweep the building, grab the intel and then get the fuck out of there. simple... is what you tried telling yourself.
it was just you and ghost - a good duo on the surface, but god if they knew what was going on inside. god if they knew how the tall man in a skull mask made your heart race- but not from fear, from something else.
safe to say- you hoped your silly little crush hadn't got out and made its way back to him. you so desperately prayed you hadn't told soap one night while you two had one too many - everyone knows the scottish man could not keep his mouth shut- even if it was stapled together.
simple. simple. simple. you kept repeating it in your head, hoping that maybe it might manifest itself into existence. this mission was going anything but simple. your location was compromised, and while ghost was shouting at you to move your arse along - the usb you'd stuck in the computer just wouldn't budge.
a firm hand planted on your shoulder startled you, but your reflexes kicked in and your elbow went flying towards the unknown source behind you. unfortunately, they were quicker and grabbed your forearm before you could hit. their arms wrapped around your biceps and pulled you backwards. now you were being dragged backwards down an unknown hallway, with no weapon and no ghost - fuck.
the whole building was dark, you didn't even know what direction you were facing. so much for a simple mission. you began to panic. your limbs slashed around, hoping for a chance to escape their hold and make a run for it. your legs suddenly stopped moving, and you then realised the person holding you had stopped in their tracks. you were pressed flush against their chest, the rise and fall was oddly grounding , enough for you to realise where you were.
it was a tiny little storage closet- great. not only were you practically kidnapped, but you were trapped and you had absolutely no idea where ghost was. now, the person behind you had released their grasp on your arm. taking this as a chance to escape, you cautiously turned around.
then you were at eye level with the person's chest - god they were tall. from the dark, you could make out a vest - a tactical vest, just like the one ghost wears. wait a minute, ghost? your eyes quickly peeked up to where this man's face would be.
lo and behold, staring right back at you, was a skull mask. you let out a breath of relief. "oh my god, ghost" you whisper-shouted. "what the fuck was th-" a gloved hand across your mouth cut you off.
again, your reflexes forced your hand up to his arm, clawing his jacket ever so slightly. you stared into his eyes - empty like always, they bored into yours. it made your heart race, if you were being honest. you feel like a little school girl - you felt giddy. god did that only increase when he leaned forward towards your ear.
"shut the fuck up" he snarled.
your eyes widened - in disbelief? in question? you really didn't know- but the waves of his voice travelled right between your legs, forcing you to squeeze your thighs together. he was so close, the limited space in the closet forced you even closer together. his back was against the opposite wall, and yours was pressed up against one behind you - but you still managed to bump against his chest.
his arms crossed against his front. he looked so- laid back? how was he so relaxed in this situation? you couldn't lie- he did look hot. you would have pounced on his bones if it weren't for the predicament you two were in. all you wanted to do was-
the snap of fingers broke you out of your trance. there was no longer a hand covering your mouth, so you took advantage of this and leaned up on your tip toes to talk to him.
"what's going on?" you whispered right by where you presumed his ear was under the mask.
he didn't respond, just looked at you out the corner of his eye. you felt the rise and fall of his heavy chest stop suddenly and every bone in your body went ridged. strong, booted footsteps marched past the door. your head turned slightly, hoping to catch ghost's eye to get light on what do to next in this situation. instead, he pushed half his body weight on top of you - sending you flying into the wall behind you, a quiet squeal leaving your lips.
a deep growl slipped out of his mouth as he once again brought his gloved hand up to your chin, tilting your head ever so slightly. fabric was felt on your ear - his mask. he was so close to you that you could feel warm air against your flushed cheeks. you could feel the hard plastic of his vest digging into your collarbones.
it was then you realised how much bigger he was than you. how he could squeeze you into nothing so easily. you wondered what he would feel like on top of you - in bed. he was practically on top of you now- all your scenes were invaded by him, you could smell him, you could feel him, you could almost taste him.
your little daydream didn't last long when the low tone of his voice bought you back down to the predicament you'd got yourself into.
"stay quiet" he warned - accentuating his words. you gulped, swallowing down the lump in your throat. it was just the waiting game now. but he was just so close. he was right there. you could easily reach out and grab him.
but he beat you to it.
the same rough fabric of his glove placed itself on your waist. he began rubbing slow circles into your skin. it was so little touch but to you - but you'd been craving it forever. his left hand continued roaming, but his right hand retracted from your chin. fabric rustled in your ear- you didn't know what, too busy focusing on the hand roaming your abdomen, until a warm breeze landed right below your ear - making your thighs clench together again, secretly hoping he didn't notice
oh. you realised. he's pulled his mask up. his hot lips landed back on your neck, a shiver ran down your spine at the action- making you arch your back onto him. his breath hitched at that- you heard it, with his mouth being so close to your ear. his lips began to wander down your neck, his teeth ever so slightly nipped at the skin - making your knees weak and your hands wander over his shoulders for support.
outside the door, a loud crash forced your eyes to open and your body froze. shit, you'd got so distracted by what ghost was doing you'd forgotten the situation at hand. speaking of - what the fuck was ghost doing.
"ghost" you whined, dragging out your words. but your whining came to an end when he grabbed your hips abruptly and spun you around - so now your back was flush against his chest and your front on the wall. a quiet whimper fell through your lips as you felt his mouth against your ear again.
"stay. quiet" he said again - through gritted teeth. so - you did. but he had you held so close to his front, you could feel the muscles in his thighs pressed against you. it was so distracting, it was making your head spin. if one of those men on the other side of the door were to get you now- lord knows you'd die happy.
but your little fantasy was soon coming to an end when the heat of the man behind you disappeared. you turned, furrowing your eyebrows in confusion. when you were finally facing him - you'd realised he'd pulled his mask down. he brought a finger to his lips, mimicking a shushing motion. instead of elaborating, he just flicked his head and walked out of the tiny room.
you stood there as he left - helpless, with your jaw dropped open. in shock? disbelief? this was so stupid. stupid. stupid. stupid. you repeated it in your head - bringing your palm up to smack your forehead. shit - what had you gotten into.
it was late now. the mission had finished hours ago, after you managed to grab the intel. you had sat across him on the way back to base, but he never said a word - hell he never even looked in your direction. the sun had set over the clouds and everyone on the base had gone back to their respective rooms. but you found yourself stood outside his room. you needed to talk to him.
you shifted your weight onto your other foot - swaying a bit. you just couldn't bring yourself to knock on the door. you couldn't bring your hand up to tap on the wood. luckily, you didn't have to - your shadow moving must of alerted him because the next thing you know- his booming voice travelled through the door.
"the doors unlocked" you froze on the spot - not knowing what to do. your arms felt like jelly as you found the courage to twist the handle - pushing open the door. you didn't dare look up - didn't dare look into the room. instead, you stared at the ground, finding more interest in your feet.
both of you were quiet for a moment. how long - you couldn't tell. it was almost like a stand off. like he was a lion and you were, well - food. like a predator hunting his prey.
that's exactly what it felt like when you saw his shadow appear in front of you, his boots in your eye-line. he cleared his throat, the noise sounding quiet over your loud heartbeat rushing through your ears. alas - you looked up, ever so slowly.
you met his eyes. he was standing right in front of you, with his arms crossed and his legs slightly apart. you'd only been looking at him for a second but your neck was already starting to cramp. you swallowed down the lump in your throat, preparing to speak.
"s-sir" it came out weak, and you stammered. fuck - now I've made a fool out of myself.
his chest was steady, he wasn't affected at all by this. stupid cocky bastard - how does he get to stand there so smug, while my legs practically turn to jelly at his door. your eyebrows downed- unknowingly- but his baritone voice broke your trance.
"comin' in then?" he stated it like it was obvious. like you were his friend knocking at his door - stopping by for a drink or something. but no- that wasn't happening, and you timidly shuffled past him and into the room.
the room was practically empty. he just had the necessities, still slightly nicer than yours though. his shadow was cast with a dimly lit lamp in the corner. it looked old, and the bulb was going out- but it was bright enough for you to see what was going on. for you to see the way he slowly turned his body around to face you - who was now standing practically helpless in the middle of the room.
"um..sir, i-" the feeling of concrete and a hand around your neck cut you off. for the second time- you'd been pushed into the wall by this man, whose long legs took him across the room in milliseconds- catching you off guard.
he leaned in closer. "yeah?" he was taunting you now, and it was working. you didn't know what to say, or what to do. you didn't know how to feel. scared? calm? aroused?
you didn't know what to feel- but you certainly knew what you felt.
he knew it too. he'd felt the warmth rush in your body. he'd felt your pulse rise- with his hands being placed around your neck. he felt the ways your thighs clenched- that's how close he was. he knew what he was doing to you- and there was no way in hell he was stopping now.
"wha'chu come to tell me, huh" the hand around your throat squeezed slightly harder at his words. your body reacted before your brain could- and you arched up into him. he chuckled at this. the sound came from the very back of his throat, vibrating through your whole body.
you opened your mouth to speak. although, it was hard with his hand around your neck. so he generously moved his hand away - only to rest it on your right cheek. the cool pads of his fingers felt strange on top of your warm skin - you realised he didn't have his gloves on anymore, but he still had that stupid balaclava on. you noticed when he dipped his head into your neck - like he'd done earlier.
the added sensation of the cloth over your pulse point drove you crazy. all you needed was him. it was the only word your brain could think of. him. him. him. he'd barely even touched you and you were already aching for him.
"g-ghost" you stuttered out weakly, grabbing the back of his neck desperately. he caught onto this, catching both your hands in one of his large ones quickly. he stared down at you- brown eyes boring into yours, making you feel like an ant under his gaze.
he pinned your hands against the wall - trusting you to keep them there and moved his fingers down your body. you let your head fall against the wall- the feeling of his fingertips driving you into euphoria. his fingers moved over your lower stomach - grazing above the edge of your shorts. they slowly sunk into the waistband- making you snap your eyes open.
it was then you realised he was now on his knees. his mask was pulled up over his mouth - exposing his lips. god, you wanted to kiss him so badly. but instead of kissing your lips, his mouth found its way to your inner thighs. he hooked your right leg over his shoulder - his gaze boring into you. no words were said, the only sounds in the room were your heavy breathing, and the wet sounds of his mouth kissing and nipping on your inner thigh.
his teeth dug into the skin - forcing a hiss sound out of your mouth, but only for his tongue to soothe over it a second later. "f-fuck ghost" you whimpered, hands falling loosely at your side. "do something" it was more of a whine than a demand, but nonetheless, he hooked his fingers into your shorts and slid them down your legs.
there you were left - slouched against his bedroom wall, in nothing but panties and a shirt, that was three sizes too big, whilst he was crouched down on the floor in front of you.
"is this what you want?" he almost growled, as his thumb hovered over your wet panties. "answer me" his tone was demanding.
"yeah" it came out in a whisper - not trusting yourself to use your words "please". he hummed at this, pushing his thumb slightly forward, finally resting it over your aching clit.
your hips bucked automatically, even from such little pressure. his thumb moved in slow circles over the fabric, teasing you. "more" you demanded. he chucked from underneath you.
"is tha' all you got, huh? c'mon, you can do better than that"
a small whine broke out your lips at his words. he was asking you to beg - but you could hardly form a coherent thought. "please, please please" it spilled out of your mouth like a prayer - the only words you could think of in that moment.
"really?" he teased. "I've barely even touched ya, and you've already gone dumb"
"please, ghost, i need more please-" your rambling cut off as he slipped your soaked underwear to the side and blew gently on your clit. the action made you peel your back off the wall- arching into him. he shifted slightly - hiking your leg up even higher so he could get a perfect view of your aching sex.
"fuck" it came out in a low groan. you almost didn't hear him from the way your heart was rushing in your ears. "god your fuckin' soaked, so pathetic" he scoffs. " how long you've been thinking of this for, hm?"
"how long have you had dreams about me filling up this sweet little cunt, huh sweetheart?" he was teasing. he knew the effect he had on you. he could tell by your body language - you always left your self open. he saw how you never met his eyes, how you always seemed to shrink down when he was in the room. he knew everything. cocky bastard.
finally, he placed a wet kiss on your swollen clit. your knees nearly gave out with relief as he began to swirl his tongue around and around. "f-fuck" you stuttered, bringing your hand down to grab onto his hair through the fabric of his mask. the action admitted a groan from his mouth, the vibrations making you feel dizzy.
little whimpers and pants left your mouth as he flicked his tongue around the senstive bud, nipping and biting ever so often. lewd, wet noises filled the empty space of the room. your slick started to spill on your thigh as he pulled you closer and closer to your orgasm.
your eyes made contact with his. "come on" he mumbled against you. "come for me, sweet girl, come on". the vibrations of his voice were enough to send you over the edge, the feeling of your release washing over you, making you feel dizzy.
he pulled away and stood tall to his full height again, looking down at you. his chin was covered in your juices, reflecting off the dim light. a small smirk rested on his face as you stood there catching your breath.
you didn't even get a word out before he slammed his lips onto yours. the kiss was messy, his tongue fighting for dominance in your mouth while you could taste yourself on his lips.
eventually, he managed to manoeuvre you onto the bed, you didn't even realise until your back hit the firm mattress. it wasn't the most comfortable thing, but it will do.
"please" you whispered between kisses. "want you, please, so bad".
"yeah? tell me what you want"
you stumbled over your words again "i-i don't know please just, i just want you"
he groaned, moving your arms above your head so he could slip off your t-shirt. another groan leaving his mouth at the sight of your tits. his hot tongue licked a path from the edge of your panties, all the way up to your breasts .
he took one in his mouth. swirling his tongue around the sensitive nub and pulling away with a pop, watching the way your nipples hardened in the cool air. he did the same with the other one, meanwhile, you were getting impatient.
you tried to push him away, but he was too strong. alas, he got the memo and chuckled ever so slightly. "greedy girl".
his large hands ripped your panties off you in a second. but before you could protest his middle finger came down to tease your entrance. "gotta work you open first, love"
he inserted a finger, then a second. they practically slid inside with how wet you were. your hands scrambled for a grip on the sheets as your back arched off the bed. his fingers worked inside of you, stretching you out in preparation. but just as you were about to have your second orgasm, he pulled away his fingers. in response, you whined loudly, but he was quick to shush you with a finger to your lips.
"the next time you'll come is on my cock, okay?" you clenched around nothing at his words.
his thumb pulled down your bottom lip, then his wet digits shoved their way into your mouth. "suck" he commended, and you did just that. swirling your tongue around his fingers just like he did with your clit.
"shit, baby look at you, gone all dumb already"
"fuck" he dragged out his words. "i need you so bad baby, do you want this?" you nodded your head. "no princess, use your words"
"yeah" it was a breathy whisper, but it was enough for him to continue his actions.
he sat back on his knees, pulling his joggers and boxers down just enough so his cock sprang free. your eyes widened at the sight. he was big.
"g-ghost i-, not gonna fit"
"yeah?" he was back at your ear again, hovering over you. he had your legs around his waist and his cock resting over your clit.
"you think so?" he taunted, rubbing his dick up and down your pussy, coating his tip in your wetness.
"your so wet baby i think i could just slip right in"
you went to protest, but the head of his cock slipped just past your entrance, cutting off any thought that came into your head.
"you think i'm not gonna fit huh?" he sunk into you deeper. "well guess what princess" he grabbed your jaw, forcing you to look him in the eyes.
"i'm. gonna. make. it. fit" at every word he slid deeper and deeper inside of you, until he bottomed out. the groan that came out his mouth nearly made you cum on the spot, his tip kissing your cervix.
"you see baby, I'm all the way in" he captured your lips in a kiss again, moving ever so slightly in and out of you, trying to distract you from the slight pain of him stretching you out so much.
eventually, the pain turned to pleasure and he began to move faster, pulling back from your lips to look at where you two were connected. a curse slipped from his mouth when he noticed the blunt head of his cock poking through your stomach.
"shit baby, look" he brought your hand up to the bulge. "you feel that, i'm right in your guts". the moan that slipped from your lips was pornographic, you were sure that the whole base would have heard, but that was the least of your worries right now.
he pressed his hand into your stomach, making you arch off the bed in pleasure, the slats creaking under the pressure. the dull thump of the headboard against the wall definitely woke someone up, but the only thought you had in that moment was how close you were getting.
"ghost, please, I'm so close"
"yeah?" he panted "close already baby? pathetic" he chuckled, your whimpers and moans bouncing off the walls of the room, the sound of skin slapping probably echoed down the hallway.
"well what do you say then baby" his rough fingers travelled down to your clit. "you wanna come? beg for it"
you gasped as his thumb rubbed small circles on your swollen bud. "oh my g-god, please. please let me come ghost, fuck, please please"
he groaned again. "come on then baby, come for me, milk my cock like the good slut you are.. shitt"
you finally reached your peak, your body shaking and your vision going white for a moment. you could hardly feel the hand he slapped over your mouth to keep you from screaming.
your gummy walls clenching his cock were enough to tip him over the edge, his abs tightening and a groan slipping out of his mouth as he came inside of you. his thick white cum painting your insides. he pulled out slowly, causing a hiss from him and a whimper from you.
he took your face in his hands as you came down from your high, your vision clearing up enough to look him in the eyes. you stared into his brown orbs for a while, just thinking.
fuck... what had you gotten yourself into.

Another 2022-present portable computer thing. This is a 1991 Corvallis Microtechnologies PC5-L. It's a ruggedized, waterproof handheld MS-DOS computer meant for industrial applications. It ran on Ni-Cd batteries and they died so now it runs on AA's I got two of them for $50 on eBay during one of those months when i impulse buy obscure electronics as a form of escapism This thing is an absolute brick. You could murder someone by hitting them on the head with this, and it would work fine afterwards. Here's pictures of its organs for anyone curious:
That thick red wire around the screen PCB is a heater. Yep there's a setting to heat up the LCD so it doesn't get sluggish or shatter when you decide to leave it in the freezer. The thing runs on a little system-on-chip thing, which is interesting to see coming from the early 90's. Iirc the datasheet says it's capable of analog video out as well as driving the LCD, but I haven't poked around enough to enable it. Might be cool to hook it up to a TV. I did, however, open those 512k storage modules and I saw some unpopulated footprints on the boards. So I ordered some of the same chips, and at some point I'mma try soldering them on and see if it recognizes the extra space. They came with two voltmeter modules, which I couldn't get to work, so I took one of the casings and made it into a USB and WiFi adapter using an ESP32 running Zimodem, since this thing has RS232 ports on the top. I also made my own charging adapter, since they didn't come with one. I see that internal PCMCIA slot, and I tried putting a CF card adapter in, and tried installing the drivers, but it didn't work. I'm not good at DOS tbh, and I know nothing of what this slot is for. I might come back to it later. I did all of this in 2022-23 and haven't messed with it since. Except to use it to talk to my Kaypro 4 '84:
More on that one later. I love portable computers !!!!!

Research Data Management. Or, How I made multiple backups and still almost lost my honours thesis.
This is a story I used to tell while teaching fieldworkers and other researchers about how to manage their data. It’s a moderately improbable story, but it happened to me and others have benefited from my misadventures. I haven't had reason to tell it much lately, and I thought it might be useful to put into writing. This is a story from before cloud storage was common - back when you could, and often would, run out of online email storage space. Content note: this story includes some unpleasant things that happened to me, including multiple stories of theft (cf. moderately improbable). Also, because it's stressful for most of the story, I want to reassure you that it does have a happy conclusion. It explains a lot of my enthusiasm for good research data management. In Australia, 'honours' is an optional fourth year for a three year degree. It's a chance to do some more advanced coursework and try your hand at research, with a small thesis project. Of course, it doesn't feel small when it's the first time you've done a project that takes a whole year and is five times bigger than anything you’ve ever written. I've written briefly about my honours story (here, and here in a longer post about my late honours supervisor Barb Kelly) . While I did finish my project, it all ended a bit weirdly when my supervisor Barb got ill and left during the analysis/writing crunch. The year after finishing honours I got an office job. I hoped to maybe do something more with my honours work, but I wasn't sure what, and figured I would wait until Barb was better. During that year, my sharehouse flat was broken into and the thief walked out with the laptop I'd used to do my honours project. The computer had all my university files on it, including my data and the Word version of my thesis. I lost interview video files, transcriptions, drafts, notes and everything except the PDF version I had uploaded to the University's online portal. Uploading was optional at the time, if I didn't do that I probably would have just been left with a single printed copy. I also lost all my jewellery and my brother’s base guitar, but I was most sad about the data (sorry bro). Thankfully, I made a backup of my data and files on a USB drive that I kept in my handbag. This was back when a 4GB thumb drive was an investment. That Friday, feeling sorry for myself after losing so many things I couldn't replace, I decided to go dancing to cheer myself up. While out with a group of friends, my bag was stolen. It was the first time I had a nice handbag, and I still miss it. Thankfully, I knew to make more than one back up. I had an older USB that I'd tucked down the back of the books on my shelf (a vintage 256MB drive my dad kindly got for me in undergrad after a very bad week when I lost an essay to a corrupted floppy disk). When I went to retrieve the files, the drive was (also) corrupted. This happens with hard drives sometimes. My three different copies in three different locations were now lost to me.
Thankfully, my computer had a CD/DVD burner. This was a very cool feature in the mid-tens, and I used to make a lot of mixed CDs for my friends. During my honours project I had burned backed up files on some discs and left them at my parents house. It was this third backup, kept off site, which became the only copy of my project. I very quickly made more copies. When Barb was back at work, and I rejoined her as a PhD student, it meant we could return to the data and all my notes. The thesis went through a complete rewrite and many years later was published as a journal article (Gawne & Kelly 2014). It would have probably never happened if I didn’t have those project files. I continued with the same cautious approach to my research data ever since, including sending home SD cards while on field trips, making use of online storage, and archiving data with institutional repositories while a project is ongoing.
I’m glad that I made enough copies that I learnt a good lesson from a terrible series of events. Hopefully this will prompt you, too, to think about how many copies you have, where they’re located, and what would happen if you lost access to your online storage.

Mediamancy: unknown armies updated class
Mediamancy is a mix of videomancy, and infomancy and a bit of bibliomancy (at least in my mind). It is the magic of using media as a conduit for casting spells. I have read the wiki page regarding mediamancy and have come to the conclusion that it is kinda warped in the sense that it can’t fully be adopted as a practice irl. So, with that in mind, I came up with a way to use it anyway (mainly cause I hate to be told no to things).
How to practice mediamancy:
Media as charms: I have taken to carrying around thumb drives with folders full of videos and photos and books that I simply insert into my phone or computer and plug in. A few minutes of tapping in allows me to feel revitalized and ready to zap. Without these, I feel kinda naked in a way.
Images and archetypes as glamours: imagine copying and pasting psychic imagery over your aura to allow for you to enhance certain talents you have or provide you with base skills. That is what this is. Granted it’s an illusion but it is still very useful.
Music as potions: I’ve beaten this one to death, see any of my other posts on cybermancy or pop culture magic.
News articles as bibliomancy: pretty self explanatory.
The key to mediamancy is to always be plugged in somehow.
Tools of a mediamancer
- thumb drives and ssd hard drives: it may just be me, but I’m obsessed with storage devices and storage space. This way I can carry all my stuff with me and not have to worry.
- smartphone: this is like my wand, my scrying mirror and my grimoire all rolled into one.
- portable charger: a good charger is the best way to make sure your phone doesn’t run out of battery. If you’re like me, then you would want to carry at least two chargers and a wall plug to charge the chargers.
- phone attachments and accessories: camera add ons, usb dongles, stylus, Bluetooth earbuds and other add ons are all useful for various functionalities of mediamancy since you’re not just consuming media but creating it too.
- a good bag to carry it all
Software tools of a mediamancer
- streaming services: kinda essential, but at least one good streaming service is required or a free service that gives you the feel of tv watching.
- blogging platform: for those who embrace the written media, this is a good way to work with social media sorcery and literary magic
- news app: I recommend google news since it’s free
- writing software: I recommend scrivener because it’s a writer’s dream space.
Voice notes app: in lieu of a voice recorder, a voice notes app is good for making vocal spells and recording conversations for making media based spells using audio as ingredients.
Music streaming service: at the very least it’s good to boost energy if nothing else. I recommend YouTube music due to the wide range of ambient music available.
- e-reader app: this is essential for literary mediamancy since books are always being written. I recommend kindle since almost everyone has a smartphone and an Amazon account and there are tons of free books you can get from it. If you have an Amazon account then you have a kindle account.
Video game emulator: mostly for nostalgic purposes, this can be turned into a way to practice Ludomancy (video game magic).

Ask response:
"If you answer this ask (you don't have to), can you block my name? I'd rather be anonymous, but I wanted to ask if you know of any good places to host media like Discord? Or just place where you can leave and label the stuff? Because I have discord servers that contain my own story ideas and pictures to go alongside it, and while I can store it all on a USB, I'd rather have it all in one place where I can access. Sorry, I know I'm not really phrasing this well, but do you know of anywhere you can store ideas, text, pictures, links, etc, that are simple and easy to use? Like I can load it up, log in, or whatever place a picture I have for a certain story full HD, and it stays there forever until I delete it never looses its quality or the text I place can be edited and added to"
My apologies for the inconvenience of not having anon asks on, I got hazed by some people back in the Homestuck days and once was enough. Some people are cruel cowards and I won't subject myself to such harassment again.
There's several. I recommend using multiple sources:
Google Drive. Basic space is free, but it's Google. Storage is at least cheap, if you need more. I won't link this.
Dropbox. The OG online storage backup. Cheap.
OwnCloud. It's simple to get up and running. There's a cool markdown text app called qownnotes that can hook into this, too!
Github and its competitors. You can make a repository with all your stuff and folders, mark it private.
Use a wiki service. There's a few FOSS wiki solutions! DON'T USE FANDOM!!
Neocities. If you pay 5$ a month, you're doing a good deed and you can make your own funky website, too.
Archive Of Our Own, aka Ao3 for your text. You can set it to only you can see it! If you have hosting space, you can actually fork the software for it! It's an archive! It's what it's for! It has an original work section!
BACK UP YOUR STUFF LOCALLY! Big local storage has gotten way, way more affordable. You can get a 2 tera solid state external drive for under 120 dollars, a spinny disk external drive for under 70$. If you don't want to use Amazon, check out Best Buy or a local computer shop for options.
You're most likely gonna use money. I know money's really, really tight for a lot of people and the situation just plain sucks. I can't do much but offer options for people to ponder.
My recommendation is to back up your stuff to a physical location, and to rent online storage space with multiple vendors. If you don't mind using google for now, use both GDrive and Dropbox for simplicity. If you don't mind doing more and learning some things, use Dropbox with OwnCloud, and post your text to Ao3.
I do NOT recommend Imgur for photo backup.
I do NOT recommend Apple services unless you already have an iPhone/Mac device.

HOW TO BACK UP YOUR SHIT ON A FUBAR PC
So, I have a lil linux know how. Someone I know's Windows Boot SSD died on em. I helped unfuck it, but it still got me thinkin. "Do people know how to back up stuff after their PC commits seppuku?"
So What you'll need is:
-A friend's PC to create the usb tool -A USB drive (preferably USB 3.0) with 16 GB or more of storage -An external hard drive to store the backup image -An internet connection.
FIRST
Borrow your friend's pc or laptop.
Download balena-etcher or Rufus
Download a copy of ubuntu linux. Get a coffee, eat a sandwich. This'll take a while.
Once it's done, use Etcher or Rufus to install Ubuntu on the flash drive. Eject the usb, thank your friend, and go back to your malfunctioning compy and plug the usb in.
NOTE: THIS PRESUMES THAT THERE IS A SOFTWARE ERROR PREVENTING YOUR MACHINE FROM BOOTING. IF THE HARDWARE ITSELF IS BROKEN, THIS WONT WORK.
Ok, you're going to boot your PC into BIOS. How? Depends on who made the computer. Google "How to open bios on a [Blank] pc", and you should be able to find the answer pretty quick. Its usually by either spamming the delete key or f10 while your computer turns on.
Once you're in the BIOS, there should be a menu with boot options. Select the usb. It will boot your computer into ubuntu linux, running off that lil usb stick. Neat, huh? You'll get the option to try or install ubuntu as an operating system. You want to click "try".
Plug in the external drive you're putting the backup image of your drive on.
Hit the windows key and it should pull up a search bar. type "Disks" or "Gparted". it's the same program either way so, open it.
You should see something like this.
Depending on the size of your Boot SSD in windows, you may need to shrink the partition a bit. like If you have a 500gb drive handy, but the drive you need to back up is 1TB. So click on the bit that says "basic data partition"
click the gear icon
Click "Resize..."
Resize. if the external drive you're backing up to is BIGGER than the boot drive you're trying to back up, you can skip this.
Now there's two things you can do. The first is to simply create an image of the basic data partition where all your files are. The second is to back up the whole disk.
To back up the partition,
Select the basic data partition, click the gear icon, and select "create partition image"
Name it whatever you want, save it on the external drive. Go get another coffee and a sandwich, this may take awhile as well.
To make a backup of the whole disk, click on the three vertical dots in the upper right corner, and select "create disk image"
Same as before. name it what you want, save it to the external drive.
There you go.
To access the data, you need to restore that image to a new SSD or hard drive. You can do this using the same program. I recommend doing this AFTER you've done whatever was needed to fix windows.
if you're just restoring a partition image, not the whole disk, here's what you do.
If you have FREE SPACE on a drive, or new drive, you can click on the "+" button, create a new empty partition
and click "restore partition image" to make it readable. Then you can mount it as a new drive in windows and copy your stuff over. WARNING: THE PARTITION YOU'RE RESTORING TO MUST BE AS BIG OR BIGGER THAN THE PARTITION IMAGE
For a disk image, similar steps.
Three vertical dots on the upper right, select "restore disk image".
Select the full disk image from wherever you saved it and restore.
WARNING: Restoring a disk image will nuke anything already on the drive you're restoring it TO. So don't restore the disk image to your fixed boot drive, or to the drive you saved the disk image on.
Anywhomst. I hope this helps someone save their stuff or avoid being charged out the nose by a computer repair shop.

Cameron and the World Machine
A short story of a brief exchange between a simulation and its operator.
One of the multiple USB ports on Cameron's tall server stack began to glow, lined with a distinct yellow telling of the cat's return from a dataverse.
The light then projected an outline of a scarved Zeraora in a free space near the machine. Following a few seconds of silence, the feline began to materialize in the given location.
The process was not dissimilar to a printer laying ink onto a piece of paper or a multicellular organism being teleported right to its destination.
...Really, it was entirely like the latter, just with digital storage rather than a collection of biocells.
Blinking away the disorienting haze he'd, by that point, gotten used to, Cameron proceeds to his laptop, which automatically opens to his OneShot application.
Well, it was less of an application and more of a budget visualization of the world he'd just left. Yes, Cameron had taken the time to reserve a section of his server for the World Machine.
Others were, understandably, confused by such a decision, though both the machine and the user agreed that it was nothing but a win-win-win; The World Machine could perpetually run without fear of harming Cameron's device, Cameron could utilize his power to enter and help out whenever necessary, and they could maintain a close work relationship around the house.
The system wasn't... perfect, a particularly traumatizing September 4th would have something to say about it, but it worked well enough 99% of the time. For someone like Cameron, it might as well be perfect.
"[Data corruption is at an all-time low, thanks to your patches.]"
Even with the Machine realizing its tamed nature so long ago, maintenance was an inevitable must when keeping a system running. Bugs had to be squashed, sidewalks restored; Not much, but it's honest work.
"That's great, I'm glad to have helped!"
"[I'm very appreciative. Oh, by the way, you got a text from..."]
The World Machine then proceeded to read out the full IPv4 address belonging to Jake and Reikka's own network of devices. Annoying, and he had to be careful who was around, though neither of them could really do anything about it.
"Got it, thanks."
Cameron pulled out his modified tablet-like phone and read their message.
📲'Wanna hop on later?'
Ah, a virtual date! It wasn't often that they were able to meet physically, so most of the time they opted to make do with traversing interesting worlds in the Multiverse Machine. Significantly more interesting than dinner dates, and they could stretch their limits without risking any genuine harm, just having to ask an overseer to reset that server.
📱'Of course!'
📲'Pog'
📱':3'
With his evening plans made, he closes the World's window on his laptop and gets back to work.

Hi there! I noticed you guys were attempting to reset your computer in hopes of it running faster but unfortunately there was not much improvement and there was a loss of files. I really love your guys art and wanted to help out a bit. Though, please research and take some advice with a grain of salt.
1. When reseting a computer without wanting to lose data - BACK IT UP - whether this be through a USB drive, the cloud, or an external hard drive, this will ensure no important data is lost
2. Assuming this computer is a desktop and not a laptop, if it’s really old, reseting it will do a moderate job at improving the speed. Upgrading the components inside the desktop is ideal here, mainly:
- Changing the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) to an SSD (Solid State Drive) or upgrading the HDDs storage capacity
- Upgrading the RAM
- Upgrading other components inside such as the processor would help too but it’s pricey
3. Lastly, clean out the desktop to remove dust an debris using computer air dusters
^^^ Turn off and Unplug any connections before upgrade or cleanup ^^^
Optional: Switch your OS
- Linux is known for being much faster than other OS’s and uses less hard drive space and Windows
- Windows tiny 11 is lightweight as it’s a stripped down version of Windows 11
Hopefully, this information is actually helpful to you all!
we did a few of these!! sadly our old girl is a laptop and shes barely kicking but she's kicking none the less! thank u sm for this!! there are a few we're gonna try and hopefully they work!!!! ahhh!!!

stopped syncing to onedrive cuz i knew it would run out of capacity soon anyway, plus i also find it confusing and never use it anyway, maybe i would if they didn't charge me like companies do for every fucking service on the internet
with said confusion i almost accidentally deleted all of my image files, even as they're there OCD brain still keeps double checking to make sure they still are all there with all my most recent shit, even doing it in other places
basically until i settle on somewhere that's free and has a lot of space for backup i'm gonna rely on my USBs for backup lol
if anyone has any ideas for good online storage tho i'm all ears, considered MEGA but IDK how it is now and how private it is

So I took a break from using google products for a while. Last year I gave in and started using Jamboard. Fortunately since then I've picked up enough html to think I can clap together a tackboard for myself with plenty of space to make it pretty later. If I want to access it from just one computer, I can leave it in the file systems and run those internal files on a browsing program (life firefox) like any other .html website. If I want to be able to access it anywhere I'm logged into my home wifi, I can host it from a turned on device (a computer or a phone), or even maybe on a hard drive plugged into the router (some mid grade to fancy ones have usb ports for simple storage) It will be kind of clunky, but a fun project to improve the look and input options over time, and as long as I back up the files periodically, I don't have to worry about people out of town adding software migrations to my life. I think it's a reasonable goal to have more direct control over more of the computing tools I use, insofar as I can. I think a lot of accessibility has been taken off the internet and out of our cultural communication about how the 'net works... and with a little curiosity and flexibility, users can add that back for themselves perhaps.
