I think this is definitely a US vs UK thing. I can get to London from in just over two hours by train but I wouldn't consider making it a day trip. It sounds exhausting for a start. Plus if I'm going to make that much effort to go somewhere I want to enjoy it for more than a few hours. A day trip for me is anywhere that's 1.5 hours drive or less away. I admit, everything is so close together here that we're probably spoiled. Most places you can live there's so many interesting things to see and do within an hour's drive that you just don't need to go further.
It’s interesting to me to read GO fics where Tadfield and the South Downs are day trips vs where staying overnight is necessary. I wonder if the difference is UK vs American authors, and then are there differences depending on the region of America?
It seems like people in the UK view 2+ hours as too long for a day trip, whereas that is a regular occurrence on the Mid Atlantic east coast. Here in DE, I can get to PA, NJ, MD, DC and VA within 1-2.5 hours and NYC is 2.5 hrs by train. Hell, I can see NJ from my house (not a Sarah Palin joke, that is Salem Nuclear Plant from my back door).

But then when we lived in Austin, TX it took 2 (San Antonio) to 8.5 hours (El Paso) to drive to the next major city in the same state and other than maybe SA those were not day trips.
Dunno, maybe I’m wrong, just seems interesting. Might be that this shitstorm of an election has me thinking about connecting to people outside your little bubble.

I know that it's probably a perfectly common word over there, but watching films and tv shows with Americans talking about “being tardy” or “getting a tardy slip” at school is so fucking surreal to me.
Like howdy I'm an American. I missed the big bus made of cheese that was supposed to take me to school because I was too busy mining for CDs in the hamburger mines, so now as punishment my teacher gets to call me a slur. Also I'm not allowed to play four square at recess or eat a Dairy Queen.
Yee-haw, dagnabbit! ☹️

It’s been hours and I’m still thinking about the fact that breadsticks in the US are not at all like the ones we have here in the UK.
For literally decades I’ve been seeing jokes about people stuffing their bags with breadsticks and picturing these
Tumblr media
When in fact people are talking about these
Tumblr media
Or maybe these? Unclear. But definitely not thin crunchy things that snap if you dunk them too vigorously into some dip

I feel like everything I’ve known up until now is a lie

How to differentiate a U.K. Fishing program from one in the U.S.?
Well, one, you have a guy fishing with a neck tie.
And two, you have this guy close out your show like he’s telling you about Bilbo Baggins.

The number of times I've been in London and USAmericans on a train/underground, not knowing the basic rules, so just keep talking at their normal (loud) level, is astounding. Like, we get it, you're excited to go to the tourist trap destinations. We don't care; we've all seen it before. Keep to yourself and your family, and don't get strangers involved!
whenever someone calls USAmerican English the 'movie accent' I remember how somewhere last year I was on a train when suddenly the silence was broken by an american voice behind me somewhere and I immediately thought "Oh no, someones playing their tiktoks out loud again" and automatically turned around to put a face to my annoyance like you do when someones driving bad, and turns out a few rows down were just some actual in the flesh USAmericans having a nice conversation amongst themselves. I am sorry Americans I'm glad they let you out of the phone
