Snippet Sunday IV

Pushing ahead with prophet story, please enjoy a ~flashback~

He shrugged. Passed the crowbar from hand to hand. A disproportionate amount of attention settled on the passing doors, and the posters pasted to the walls. Then, as if trying to spit something scuttling and frantic from his mouth, Cain said, “I’ve been hearing voices.”

Something in Theo’s chest bucked. “What?”

“I figured maybe it was like what you had. I don’t know.” He raised his shoulders again, ducked his head. “Probably not, though.”

“No, wait, you… wait.” Hurrying to catch up with Cain, Theo tried to get his thoughts in order. “What kinds of things have you been hearing?”

Briefly, Cains eyebrows twitched, a brave attempt at a frown. He did not look round at Theo, continuing down the long corridor. “I don’t know,” he said. “Warnings. Voices. Words. Coughing. Just… things.”

It was hard to describe the swirling, divine language that plagued his every sleeping moment, and Theo has definitely used all of those words in an attempt to explain it before. Something frantic and hopeful started to pound in his chest. In an awed whisper, he said, “Maybe you’re like me.”

"life doesnt get better, you just get stronger" does NOT include ages 11-17. life does in fact just get better from there. those years are dogshit. like, you do get stronger but its mostly just a factor of not being 11-17 anymore. positive thinking helps but it doesnt fix whatevers going on at 15, you have to brute force through that one raw
