I feel like this site is good despite itself/management

As someone who lurked on tumblr for over a decade before being forced to create an account so I could follow more than the most recent posts of the people I follow on here, I joined this site in truth at a weird time. And something I’ve realized with the way stories of management almost tanking the site but being prevented from doing so on to the current situation is that tumblr and it’s staff and management are kind of like my mom. She’s remarkably progressive for a white woman in her 70s, genuinely, but at she can still be shitty. She supports all the rights to autonomy and protection for lgbtqia and women and non white people but refuses to change how she talks about things cause “people should just know I don’t mean anything bad by all the other stuff I say and do.” Like calling anyone with East Asian heritage ‘oriental’ or talking about how “it makes me so mad cause all lives matter,” despite me pointing out that by saying the last one she’s misunderstanding the point of Black Lives Matter ain’t to treat everyone well, it’s to have some decency and treat black lives like they matter as much as white lives to the system. There’s plenty more, like my mom deciding years ago to start taking her frustration at her life in her early 60s and the state of mine out on my disabled partner, has lighting her and refusing to ever acknowledge her repeated wrongdoings despite long periods of estrangement and reconnecting due to good behavior and my partner having a horrible family she had to cut ties with. But we’ve finally gotten to a good place where she treats my partner at least as good as the average mother in law (and sometimes better!)… but that’s more because her dementia is obvious now. But she remains a way better parent and person than any of my uncles and their wives, easily.

so in a weird way I’m seeing my ability to actually love my mom and my cousins who always left me hanging but now need some catharsis in the OG tumblr users talking about redditors and the tumblr staff/management. The company behind this site has many problems over the years, and it’s a cop out to say they are at all good now, but damn it if they ain’t somehow failing their way into running the site better than the people behind twitter and Reddit

Project 2025 has crossed my dash several times, so maybe tumblr is already informed about the hellish 900-page takeover plan if Trump wins office again. But even the articles covering Project 2025 can be a LOT of reading. So I'm trying to get it down to simple bulleted lists…

Eliminating the National Weather Service, which is currently responsible for preparing for extreme weather events like heat waves, floods, and wildfires

Laurie Garrett looked at the roughly 50 pages within Project 2025 that deal with Health and Human Services (HHS) and other health agencies, and summarized them on Twitter/X in a series of replies. I've shortened even more here:

HHS must "respect for the sacred rights of conscience" for Federal workers & healthcare providers and workers broadly who object to abortions, contraception, gender reassignment & other issues - ie. allow them to deny services based on religious beliefs

Closely regulate the NIH w/citizen ethics panels, ensuring that no research involves fetal tissue, leads to development of new forms of Abortions or brings profits to the researchers.

Redirect the Office of Global Affairs to promoting "moral conscience" & full compliance w/the Mexico City policy

The CDC should have no role in medical policies.

"Because liberal states have now become sanctuaries for abortion tourism," HHS should use every available tool, including the cutting of funds, to ensure that every state reports exactly how many abortions take place within its borders, at what gestational age of the child, for what reason, the mother’s state of residence & by what method.

hey! ik you have a big following, and you’ve mentioned visiting israel and palestine on school trips— i really think your voice would be valuable in speaking out on the injustices happening in that region. you always speak so eloquently on race/gender issues on your blog and i’m really interested in hearing your take! plus i think your platform is large enough to really make a good stand!

i appreciate that you sent this ask, and i appreciate that you thought of me. i agree with everything you’re saying, and i wanted to respond to this immediately because of that, even if i don’t have much of an answer to share.

i’ve studied the conflict for years and, like you said, was in israel and palestine (as in the territories named as such) six months ago; i was at the gaza border in may. i actually disqualified myself from birthright because i wanted to be able to go on academic dispensation specifically (i couldn’t go to the west bank otherwise). i study sociology and jewish studies in my degree program. i’m jewish, i’m south asian, i come from a family of refugees, i come from a family of jains, i come from a family of, like, californians, i come from a family with just as many intersections as any other. suffice to say, i have a lot, a lot of emotions tied up in the levant.

the thing is, because i’ve studied it for so long, and because i study sociology specifically, i also know that saying something before i’ve processed it well enough is irresponsible. this conflict is wrapped up in linguistics; the wording you use is everything. i’m really aware of that, i’m also really aware that i’m not in a place where i feel comfortable enough to articulate myself properly. for my own safety, for responsibility’s sake, and because i’m aware of how nuanced and linguistically fucked discussing this conflict is, i don’t want to make a large statement on it while i’m not in a place to do so.

what i will say for now is that if you’re viewing this conflict as a soccer game between two teams, you are not viewing this conflict in a humanist way. normal civillians, palestinian, druze, samaritan, jewish, israeli arab, armenian, any normal person who lives in the land, should be the only “team” you’re on the side of. listen to people who are from the land, read sources in arabic, read sources in hebrew, read multiple perspectives in multiple languages for every event you want to understand better. understanding how important history, generational trauma, and narrative are in this conflict is essential to understanding why any of this is happening, and if anyone says there’s a simpler way to do it, there’s not. no one tribe in the land can leave, and no one tribe in the land deserves anything less than peace and self determination. personally, my first thought about war is how much i care about people, not which state i feel like backing.

i may post more on tumblr, i may post more on other platforms, i may choose keep my activism in-person rather than purely online. navigating all of this while also being pretty devastated and horrified is complex, and i ask for understanding.

AITA for lying to fellow students about my age?

New to Tumblr, trying it out because I've seen people talk about it being where refugees from X and Reddit go.

This is a few years since I graduated from college, but I was 38 when I started. Almost every person in my class for my major were kids straight out of high-school, so they could tell that I was definitely older than them. To try and make it less weird for everyone, I lied and said that I was 25 at the time and my time in the marines just physically aged me. I'm not sure if it clicked for any of them that at 25 I would not have been able to serve and retire, but no one confronted me about it. During the four years of the program I did become good friends with a number of students, never telling any of them that my birthday parties were all years off of what age I actually was. I even started dating someone who I thought knew I was older than I said, but apparently not. That was on me, I thought she knew my actual age considering we had eloped after she got pregnant. We divorced not long after our kid was born because she found out my age and was “disgusted I would hide that from her”. Again, 100% thought she knew I was 15 years older than her. She apparently told the college friends I still keep in touch with and now none of them are talking to me. I know I should have said something after graduation, but was I the asshole for lying in the first place?

If you get an ask from a blog that's got barely any posts begging for donations, stating that they are Palestine refugees in need of necessities that can only be obtained through financial means... it's 99.9% likely to be a scam.

A real person in need wouldn't be turning to tumblr for financial aid--they would be looking to other programs and social media websites, or especially the reddit dedicated to donation drives, and not tumblr which has no way to promote a successful donation drive other than "word of mouth" (reblogs)

Also, they would probably be looking for food, water, and shelter--not necessarily financial resources at this time.

I know it sucks that these people are weaponizing the war and using your empathy to steal from you, especially when you can't ever be 100% sure the asker is a scammer or a real person who maybe doesn't know there are better websites to ask... but it's better to donate to places you KNOW are legitimate rather than give some greedy bastard your money to run off with.

One of my favorite things (<- lying) about the liberal zionists claiming that Palestinians on tumblr are scammers is that they’ll say that donating to “verified” charities is more reliable and (audaciously) more helpful than individuals’ gofundmes. This demonstrates such egregious ignorance regarding how nonprofits and NGOs operate.

Donating directly to peoples’ funds to escape Gaza and survive while living (yet again) as a refugee is more direct and effective than donating to organizations that can’t manage to get aid in. That name came out of a time when I lived alone in a shack in the wilderness and was convinced that I was going to die out there. I watched so many other dead animals get devoured and I had extremely severe covid so I expected the same for myself.

Obviously I’m still alive and I highly recommend it. I’m now getting my MFA in visual arts at a low residency program. Which is amazing because I’m chronically ill with Long Covid and spend more than average amounts of time in bed.

I’m a faultline hugging Californian (the picture above is the San Andreas fault) and I was a Hindu monk in an ashram for a few years. I’m very serious about religion and spirituality but not in a weird way. Becoming religious also required me to become deeply anti-colonial and anti-racist.

I post a lot of personal, art, nature, disability justice, veganism, and queer stuff. I don’t get into international politics because I’ve lived outside the USA enough to know to keep my mouth shut. I don’t really get into USA politics much honestly. Use whatever pronouns you want for me. I have no real preference. We’re post-binary here.
