After Great Expectations: Our Next Novel
Tumblr media
Poll Time
We’re nearing the end of Great Expectations, with only just over a month to go, so it’s high time we decide what our next project will be. Make your voice heard at the poll here: https://forms.gle/tWD2F6y5AHnmRyZV8
The voting will close on July 4th 2023.
The options are as below, as these are the only novels which will keep the wait between novels to six months or under.
Dombey and Son (October 1856/2023 to April 1848/2025)
Little Dorrit (December 1855/2023 to June 1857/2025)
Martin Chuzzlewit (January 1843/2024 to July 1844/2025)
Barnaby Rudge (February 1841/2024 to November 1841/2024)
Read synopses for all of these in the poll. It may help your decision to take note of how long we will be waiting between novels, as well as how long the serialisation will last.
During the Hiatus
Depending on which novel wins the poll, there may be a long wait between books. Plans are currently being hatched, but to keep you sated during this time we will try to send out some of Dickens’ short stories.
If the wait covers the Christmas period, we may also send out one of his Christmas novellas, though perhaps not A Christmas Carol, as others may be organising this.
Go forth and vote!
Or, if you haven’t done so yet, sign up here!

hi pia👋
i was looking into your patreon and noticed that the monetary listings were by “chapter.” would this, for instance, in the $5 tier mean that in order to access one unreleased UtB chapter, you would pay $5, $10 for two, $20 for four, etc.? i’ve only ever patronized (?) creators who have a monthly subscription system, so i’d love some clarification if you have the time🤌 (a cursory google search was not helpful unfortunately :/)
thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!1!1!1!!!!1!!!xoxoxo
PS, i read on the latest UtB chapter that your week has been awful, so i hope it gets better🫡
Hi anon!
So you don't need Google, the info was there on my Patreon: if you go to the Patreon and go to the About section, this is explained in the very first paragraph (so it's easy for you to find in the future) but I'll also copy and paste it here:
Instead of charging for every chapter I release, I only ever charge twice per month!
There we go. Twice a month! :D You don't even need to be charged twice if you don't want to, as you can limit how much you get charged to the base Tier price (scroll down to read more about that) which I also explain on the About page! :D
If you scroll down that gets explained in more detail, so I'll copy/paste this here, but this information is always on the Patreon for anyone to check. I highly recommend checking the About sections going forwards! It can be easy to miss vital stuff without it.
How often am I charged? - Twice a month, max. You are charged per chapter, to a maximum of two chapters a month, even though I release more. This means if you pledge $1.00, with no cap, and I post four chapters, then you’ll pay $2.00. If you pledge $5.00, with a limit cap of $5.00, you’ll only ever be charged $5.00 for that month no matter what. If you want all the rewards but have a limited budget, cap your pledge and join a higher tier! You can also change your pledge amount – higher or lower – as your life dictates. This is meant to work for you, so do whatever feels comfortable. I'm happy to have you here for as long as you're happy to be here, I hope I can make your stay far warmer and cozier than what I put most of my characters through!
I don't release any early access Underline the Black there. I recommend either looking at my release schedule at the beginning of the month (or on Patreon and Ream because the schedule is public) which shows exactly what chapters are early release because it will have the tier next to it.
Right now the stories that have early access chapters on Patreon and Ream are The Nascent Diplomat, Underline the Blue, Underline the Red, Underline the Gold (all in the Augus + Gwyn tier) and Constellations (this one requires the Gary + Efnisien tier - which gives you access to everything in the Augus + Gwyn tier as well). It works out to about 2-4 early access chapters per month.
If you don't want to be charged twice a month or find it too confusing, I also have a Ream account which has all the same content, and that's only ever charged once a month for peace of mind. You can subscribe here for free and still see all the free updates in your email inbox, and upgrade in the future if you ever want to see early access chapters and/or support the free writing that's already out there. :)
I am very upfront with my charging information and also what is and isn't early access, but folks have to check out those About sections as well, not just for me, but for any Patreon. Vital information is often there, and it can be a good habit to get into before subscribing to someone. :D

This Month on the EHLS Patreon
EHLS is a queer fantasy writing collective consisting of myself & Fell A. Marsh. We recently restructured our tiers to provide more open access to the feed while saving exclusive perks & content (ebook downloads, serial access, physical books, etc.) for the higher tiers, so I thought I should start posting about what we have to offer :)
Bonus content, behind the scenes, previews ($1 & up)
May 5: Fell on HotU's visual development
May 12: B on colonialism in HotU
May 15: an update on HotU's map design!
May 19: Fell on Taker of the Third Path
May 26: B with... something? TBD!
May 29: a preview of our Pride Month plans!
Early access & serialized writing: ($2 & up)
May 3: What From the Water Rises #3, early access
May 17: What From the Water Rises #4, early access
May 31: What From the Water Rises #5, early access
For our non-subscribing followers, WFTWR is free one week after the early access posts! And for $4 & up tiers, we just reuploaded the download links for Hierarchy of the Unseen (in its current form) to replace the serialized format. Thanks for reading & I'm sure we'll have a very stacked + very queer calendar for June :)

Okay, I'm having trouble matching sources for all of OP's claims.
I'm certainly not calling OP a liar or claiming that American Education Is Good, Actually, because I'm pretty familiar with the commonly cited statistic that American adults can't read above a 5th grade level (here's a snopes article sourcing some Gallup data and the linked PIAAC data that's a little more readable especially if you're on mobile), but it's worth emphasizing here that:
The PIAAC skills results (i.e., proficiency levels) do not specifically correspond to measures such as grade levels at school. The PIAAC proficiency levels have a use-oriented conception of competency and focus on describing what types of tasks adults at each level can typically do and their ability to apply information from the task to accomplish goals they may encounter in everyday life; for example, identifying a job search result that meets certain criteria.
The PIAAC does test comprehension and proficiency for interpreting data (not just vocab, as many of the replies and reblogs first expected), and while the US is decently behind the top two countries measured this way (Japan and Finland), it's ahead of the international average for this metric.
The second source link also suggests some heavy deficits in how US education teaches children to read (and makes what seem to me compelling arguments for improvements, though I don't specialize in early childhood education and am not familiar enough to judge their relevance), but does not contextualize this or compare it to any kind of international average.
I understand the initial distress of OP's claim that Americans can't read above an elementary school level, but journalists and publications are fully aware of this, and many have guidelines and standards for writing that take that into account (e.g. in my journalism classes, I was told to aim for a 6th grade reading level or lower and shown specific guidelines for how to make information accessible and minimize jargon. The US government and CDC aim specifically for 3rd–5th grade reading levels. The NYT aims higher, and your local publications may vary, but news is meant to be accessible, so the range could be closer to a 5th—9th grade reading level on average). Therefore, it's not at all accurate that people below a 6th grade reading level only have access to TV and video.
More accurately to the PIAAC data, 18% or so might have trouble with being able to read simple articles or web pages, but once again the US meets the PIAAC international average here (23% at literacy level 1 or below).
I've done my best to review the PIAAC data, but I'm simply not finding any backing for the claim that 55% of US adults cannot read long texts at all.
This appears to be a pretty clear misinterpretation of the data.
Quick question, genuine question:
Why on earth does "more than half of US adults under 30 cannot read above an elementary school level" not strike horror into the heart of everyone who hears it?
Are the implications of it unclear????
I'm serious, people keep reacting with a sort of vague dismissal when I point this out, and I want to know why!
If adults in the US cannot read, then the only information they have access to is TV and video, the spaces with the most egregious and horrific misinformation!
If they cannot read, they cannot escape that misinformation.
This obscene lack of literacy should strike fear into every heart! US TV is notoriously horrific propaganda!
Is that???? Not??? Obvious???????
I know this sounds sarcastic, I know it does, but I'm completely serious here. I do not understand where the disconnect is.
#this was a fun research rabbit hole. I think it's not always constructive to take US education as a whole monolith either.#Literacy and education rates can vary pretty severely by region so ymmv pretty severely#and the PIAAC data does go as specific as US county averages#it's also relevant to note that the PIAAC data for the US does go back years—but they changed methods a few times#so most of what's on their website is the 2012/2014 and 2017 surveys and is not reflective of the entire history of their data#because the older data might not compare as smoothly given the change in methodology. so I only looked at the recent data.#also the PIAAC website isn't really geared for readability esp on mobile. it's a lot of research jargon so like.#might not be the most accessible reference for trying to share info on tumblr?#also PIAAC being kind of the Big Source for this it's relevant once again that OP clearly wasn't using them as the primary source for#'adults under 30' as their data is divided into 16–24 and 25–34 age brackets.#once again while the PIAAC's info was used to find the elementary school level reading statistic that's not ACTUALLY what they measure#all this to say that the constant barrage of misinfo and poor media literacy is definitely a problem#but it's uh I think a little more complex than 'US early childhood education about reading sucks'#I couldn't find an international statistic or average comparable to the 'below a 6th grade reading level' stat so lmk if anyone has one#6th graders are 11–12 years old on average so that's probably how OP came up with the 'can't read chapter books' line#it's pretty common for US school libraries to sort books by reading level by grade and from my experience#there were definitely chapter books below a 6th grade reading level. e.g. by my school's AR metric PJO was like 4.7#so like. a fourth grade reading level (for ages 8–9) based on difficulty of plot/syntax tho they're obvs marketed to 6th grade or so#american education#not trying to like start a fight with OP or anything but these are very bold claims and they're getting a lot of notes so.
