August 13, 2024 - Liz Truss, the Conservative ex-prime minister of the UK (who famously did not outlast a head of iceberg lettuce) abruptly left an event in Suffolk where she was discussing the US elections and promoting her book, after activists lowered a beautiful lettuce banner behind her while she was expressing her support for Donald Trump.
Truss later said the prank was “not funny”, and that Led By Donkeys, the group behind the prank, were “far-left activists” who used the stunt as a means to “intimidate people and suppress free speech”. [video]/[article]

honestly yall? if youre not from america and you have shit to say besides support for the minorities and women here who are about to spend the next four years fighting for our goddamn lives, shut the fuck up. i mean it. no one want to fucking hear it “oh americans are so stupid trust the americans to fuck it all up you guys had one job” WE KNOW. I GUARANTEE MOST PEOPLE ON THIS APP WHO COULD VOTE VOTED BLUE. and it didn’t matter. so you guys can go sit comfortably miles and oceans away and laugh at us, laugh at the palestinians who trump openly wants fully destroyed, laugh at the immigrants and trans people here that are going to be rounded up in a genocide of our own, and know deep in your soul when all of his promises come true, your reaction was to point and laugh. fuck off.

With both Donald Trump and UK politics trending here on the same day- it begs the question. Is the rebel child country AND its parentage having a “let them eat cake” moment? Should I sharpen the guillotine? Do you hear the people sing???

"“Always ask yourself: Why is this lying bastard lying to me?” Perhaps these blunt words of advice for journalists interviewing politicians, attributed to the late foreign correspondent Louis Heren, have endured because they are seen as self-evidently true. That politicians lie is viewed as established fact.
Public confidence in lawmakers plunged to a record low last year in the wake of Partygate and other scandals: only 9% of British adults polled by Ipsos said that they trust politicians to tell the truth. Without trust, says Jennifer Nadel of the thinktank Compassion in Politics, faith in democracy is undermined. “If we can’t trust what politicians are saying, how can we decide who to vote for? We need to be able to rely on our politicians to tell the truth,” she explains.
Compassion in Politics has long been campaigning to introduce criminal penalties for political lying, with a petition launched in 2019 attracting more than 200,000 signatures. In a surprise move two days before the UK’s general election, the Welsh government committed to passing legislation that would make lying illegal for Senedd members and candidates, having previously opposed the measure. Under the plans, those found guilty of deliberate deception by an independent judicial process would be disqualified from office.
“We’re excited and optimistic,” Nadel says. “It’s unprecedented that the government has agreed to take this measure forward.” Although some countries have limited penalties for politicians who lie during election campaigning or when giving evidence to committees, Wales is the first in the world to propose legislation that would apply more broadly to lawmakers and candidates.
Compassion in Politics’ next challenge is to persuade Westminster to follow suit by banning MPs and parliamentary candidates from lying.
The campaign sprung from concern at the rapid normalisation of lies in politics. “We are slipping at an alarming speed into a post-truth era,” says Nadel. “We only have to look at what is happening in the United States.”
Fact-checkers at the Washington Post found that Donald Trump made 30,573 false or misleading claims during his presidency, averaging about 21 a day. “America is a warning of what can happen if this problem is allowed to go unchecked,” Nadel believes. “[Our proposals] are designed to stop [the UK] from getting to that stage.”
Polling shows wide public approval for the measure, with 72% backing criminal penalties for politicians found guilty of deliberate lying in an Opinium survey conducted for Compassion in Politics in May. Though it is not yet clear whether Wales would make lying a criminal offence, Nadel says: “If the same goal of disqualifying politicians who deliberately misrepresent the facts can be achieved through using the civil law, then we’re happy.”
A private member’s bill to ban lying in Westminster, introduced by Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts in 2022, had cross-party support. “We will be looking to build [on that] and win the support of the Labour government to introduce the measure,” Nadel says...
“I think it’s important to signal a different set of norms, and try to arrest a slide towards the acceptability of attempts to deceive in public life.”
For Compassion in Politics, another challenge is persuading doubters that banning lying in politics is even possible. “There’s this belief that it’s too complex to stop,” says Nadel, who qualified as a barrister. “But the law prevents fraudulent misrepresentation in other walks of life. This is something that courts adjudicate on all the time. Why shouldn’t it apply to politicians?”"

Ok I know there is a very slim chance that anyone will see this and a slimmer chance it will change anyone’s minds but here’s my thoughts on the whole election thing and why it is imperative you go and vote if you are eligible.
You may be thinking Rose you are very open about being British you don’t even have a stake in this election. This is part of my point. How many UK parliamentary candidates can you name? Who were the candidates up for prime minister in the most recent election from the main two parties? When was the most recent UK election?
If you aren’t living in the UK or having a vested interest in UK politics you probably don’t know the answer. Thats ok why should you? Thats why it should concern you how many people outside the US who should have no stake in your elections whatsoever know so much about this one and are scared for the outcome.
I remember being 13 and sitting in the library before registration in November 2016. We didn’t have a full grasp of quite what Trump’s presidency would bring but we knew enough to be worried. I remember being 17 in November 2020 and sitting in my classroom constantly refreshing the BBC live coverage feed to see if they had called the election yet and updating my classmates and teachers on which states had been called for which candidates, all of us nervous for what another four years of Trump would bring. I am 21 now. Five months ago I cast my vote in my first UK general election, one of the most important in years, and sat up watching the coverage with my parents until dawn cheering when my area which had historically been a conservative stronghold was called for Labour. I am terrified for what another four years of Trump will mean. I am old enough to vote now. I wish I could vote in your election so for me and every other non-US citizen who wishes the same for goodness sake go out and vote. Not voting is not an option.
By not voting you may as well hand Trump the presidency now because his supporters will sure as hell go out and vote. You know why my area which has been a Tory stronghold finally lost? Because Reform UK (aka MAGA UK or the raging facist party) split the vote.
Tumblr media
The people who voted for Reform UK were largely disgruntled Tory voters who wanted to ‘demonstrate their disappointment in the conservatives’. It’s a rhetoric I’ve seen on here among undecided/ non voters and it won’t work. If not for Reform UK, conservatives would have won in my area. You don’t have the benefit of a multi-party system and if there is vote splitting because of third party candidates you know it won’t fall in Harris’ favour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first image shows the votes for the main two/three UK political parties. The second shows the votes for Reform. Reform got more votes (although not parliamentary seats) than the third biggest UK party. More people voted for the raging facist party than the liberals and if that doesn’t scare you I don’t know what will.
So as my mother says go and exercise your right to vote. Eligible voters, you are fortunate enough to have an opportunity to vote in this election for goodness sake do. And encourage friends and family to as well. Organise on the group chat to go to the polls with your friends. Drag your reluctant siblings out of bed to go and vote with you.
This is the most important election of your lives, act like it.

Good grief... this stupid woman Truss is a danger to Britain and the whole world.
A failed Tory prime minister who only lasted a few disastrous weeks in office, but who managed to crash the British economy in that time, now suggests Trump should win?!
She shouldn't be allowed out into the community, never mind being given political power.
